How wonderful it is to hear this! ‘When someone is called in front of a judge, the first thing he does is look for a lawyer to defend him. Precisely because, with the gaze of faith, they understand that, even if gone from view, Jesus remains always with them - and, in the Father's glory, he sustains them, guides them, and intercedes for them. ‘The Ascension doesn't indicate Jesus' absence, but rather it tells us that he is living among us in a new way. He is no longer in a particular place in the world as he was before the Ascension. Now he is in the Lordship of God, present in every space and time, close to each of us. In our lives we are never alone: we have this Advocate who awaits us and defends us.’ Pope Francis, Rome, April 17, 2013

THOUGHTS ON THE GOSPEL

‘We are never alone’ ‘Jesus is the only and eternal Priest who, by his passion, has traversed death and the grave and is risen and ascended into Heaven. He is with God the Father, where he always intercedes in our favour. How wonderful it is to hear this! ‘When someone is called in front of a judge, the first thing he does is look for a lawyer to defend him. Let us not be afraid to go to him and ask forgiveness, to ask for blessing, to ask for mercy. ‘St Luke mentions that the Apostles return to Jerusalem “with great joy”. Why? Precisely because, with the gaze of faith, they understand that, even if gone from view, Jesus remains always with them - and, in the Father's glory, he sustains them, guides them, and intercedes for them. ‘The Ascension doesn't indicate Jesus' absence, but rather it tells us that he is living among us in a new way. He is no longer in a particular place in the world as he was before the Ascension. Now he is in the Lordship of God, present in every space and time, close to each of us. SPECIAL INFORMATION AND WIDER COMMUNITY EVENTS

HAPPY MOTHERS DAY to all the Mothers in the Parish. God bless you all for the love and service you give so willingly.

DATACOLLECTION: There will be sheets with pencils for you to fill in at Mass next week—Pentecost Sunday. We are needing to renew /update our existing database as it is very old and quite out of date with incorrect information. Your cooperation in filling out the sheet will be really appreciated as it will help us to work for you more efficiently. We ask next week’s collection helpers to be ready to do an extra collect ion of the sheets after Holy Communion.

TIME AND TALENT: Next weekend also—please let the Holy Spirit guide you as to what your gifts are and how you can utilise them as part of your spiritual experience. Can you sing? Play an instrument? Help clean the Church? Do some gardening? Help organize the children's Mass? Read? Help set up for daily Masses? Welcome people to Mass on Sunday? Join Youth Group Leadership Team? etc. Please offer your services and hand page in with the data sheet .

COMMUNION TO THE SICK WORKSHOP: This will be held here at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish on Tuesday 21st May at 7.30pm. All are welcome. However, all Acolytes and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, and anyone who would like to take Holy Communion to the Sick or anyone who is already doing it, are strongly invited to attend this Workshop.

FUND RAISING FOR THE KENYA PROJECT: Beginning this Sunday, every 3rd Sunday of the month after 9.30 am Mass there will be a cake stall to raise funds for the Kenya Project. BIBLE STUDIES: Next month’s session will be Wednesday 15th May (not 3rd Tuesday) in Kalamunda Parish hall at 7pm. If you only have even a mild interest in the Old Testament it is really worth your while to come along and learn more. It is always very informative and interesting. We will be looking at the book of Numbers in the next session. Your Bible Questions Answered: “How did the Gospels come to be written?” For the answer or to submit your own Bible question visit www.thebiblicalfoundation.org.au

PARISH PLANNED GIVING: The Parish Planned Giving Weekend is scheduled on 8th and 9th June this Year. However, Planned Giving Speeches/talks will start 3 to 4 weekends prior, and will continue for another 3 to 4 weekends after, to give opportunity for more people to participate in this method of supporting the Parish. Direct Debit is the most direct and simple way to do it. Ask a member of the Parish Finance Committee or ring the Parish Office to find out how.

WHY TWO COLLECTIONS AT MASS: The First Collection is for the maintenance of the Parish Priests - food, clothing, cleaning (Presbytery) and travel expenses. It is normally put in the white bags at the end of the Mass and banked separately. The Second Collection is for the Maintenance and day to day running of the Parish. The main source of the Second Collection is Planned Giving (Envelopes), and is placed in the red bags at the end of the Mass and also banked separately. You can see why we need more people to come on Planned Giving Program. Please consider the option!

READINGS FOR THIS SUNDAY First Reading Acts 1:1-11 Why are you standing here looking into the sky? Jesus has been taken into heaven. In my earlier work, Theophilus, I dealt with everything Jesus had done and taught from the beginning until the day he gave his instructions to the apostles he had chosen through the Holy Spirit, and was taken up to heaven. He had shown himself alive to them after his Passion by many demonstrations: for forty days he had continued to appear to them and tell them about the kingdom of God. When he had been at table with them, he had told them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for what the Father had promised. ‘It is,’ he had said, ‘what you have heard me speak about: John baptised with water but you, not many days from now, will be baptised with the Holy Spirit.’ Now having met together, they asked him, ‘Lord, has the time come? Are you going to restore the kingdom to Israel?’ He replied, ‘It is not for you to know times or dates that the Father has decided by his own authority, but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and then you will be my witnesses not only in Jerusalem but throughout Judaea and Samaria, and indeed to the ends of the earth.’ As he said this he was lifted up while they looked on, and a cloud took him from their sight. They were still staring into the sky when suddenly two men in white were standing near them and they said, ‘Why are you men from Galilee standing here looking into the sky? Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven, this same Jesus will come back in the same way as you have seen him go there.’ Responsorial Psalm Ps 46:2-3. 6-7. 8-9. R. v.6 (R.) God mounts his throne to shouts of joy: a blare of trumpets for the Lord. 1. All peoples, clap your hands, cry to God with shouts of joy! For the Lord, the Most High, we must fear, great king over all the earth. 2. God goes up with shouts of joy; the Lord goes up with trumpet blast. Sing praise for God, sing praise, sing praise to our king, sing praise. 3. God is king of all the earth. Sing praise with all your skill. God is king over the nations; God reigns on his holy throne. Second Reading Eph 1:17-23 He made Jesus to sit at his right hand in heaven. May the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, give you a spirit of wisdom and perception of what is revealed, to bring you to full knowledge of him. May he enlighten the eyes of your mind so that you can see what hope his call holds for you, what rich glories he has promised the saints will inherit and how infinitely great is the power that he has exercised for us believers. This you can tell from the strength of his power at work in Christ, when he used it to raise him from the dead and to make him sit at his right hand, in heaven, far above every Sovereignty, Authority, Power, or Domination, or any other name that can be named, not only in this age, but also in the age to come. He has put all things under his feet, and made him, as the ruler of everything, the head of the Church; which is his body, the fullness of him who fills the whole creation.

Gospel Acclamation Mt 28:19. 20 Alleluia, alleluia! Go and teach all people my gospel. I am with you always, until the end of the world. Alleluia! Gospel Lk 24:46-53 While blessing them, he was taken to heaven.

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘You see how it is written that the Christ would suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that, in his name, repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be preached to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses to this. ‘And now I am sending down to you what the Father has promised. Stay in the city then, until you are clothed with the power from on high.’ Then he took them out as far as the outskirts of Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them. Now as he blessed them, he withdrew from them and was carried up to heaven. They worshipped him and then went back to Jerusalem full of joy; and they were continually in the Temple praising God.

Next Week’s Readings: Pentecost Sunday

First Reading Genesis 11:1-9

Second Reading Romanns 8:22-27

Gospel John 7:37-39
