Two months ago, fifty percent of our preschool staff attended a seminar presented by the Appelbaum

Training Institute, “In Our Hands, Tomorrow’s Future.” What is unique about the Applebaum seminars, aside from Maryln Appelbaum being the lead speaker, is that a variety of topics are covered throughout the day. She has a doctorate in Psychology and Master’s degrees in both Psychology and Education. She has written more than thirty “how-to” books geared exclusively to teachers and parents. Our teachers and I receive daily emails, “Message from Maryln,” along with over 50,000 educators throughout North America, as well as South America, Australia and Asia. Her main theme is “You are a dif-ference maker.” I’d like to share some information from some of her recent short and simple, but so meaningful emails.

Fruitful Fall Food Drive Although Ascen-sion has been going through a season of change, it was won-derful to see how you opened your hearts and grocery bags to help people in our area who are really struggling. Both Har-bor Interfaith Shelter and Lutheran Social Services were over-whelmed with the generosity of all who contributed to the food drive this year. We started out with a monetary goal of $1,500 and ended up receiving over $4,100! That doesn’t begin to count all of the food donations. In Julie Botzong’s November Link article, she said “We want to see God’s promise fulfilled so that even a season of change could be transformed into a season of great significance for Ascension.” Didn’t you just feel the Holy Spirit working in the church and the feeling of joy knowing how many families in our area were going to be helped? Both shelters were struggling to find a

1) Children Need Someone with a GPS – Children need di-

rection, guidance and a routine for them to follow so they

will know what to expect. It is rules. It is clear directions.

Guidance leads them on the path to success.

2) Follow Through – “When you say something to a child,

follow through. If you sometimes follow through, and

other times do not, children are never sure of which times

you will follow through, and they will test limits more and

more.

3) Have Smile-Alongs – One of the greatest acts of kindness

is helping someone smile. A smile-along is similar to a

sing-along. Have a child tell a funny story or do an act of

kindness that make others smile. It helps children learn to

pass along their smiles as encouragement and joy to others

helping spread “The Kindness Movement.”

4) Take Care of Yourself – Remember to take time for your-

self. You give to your students all week long. A car cannot

run when the gas tank is empty. You also cannot run when

you are empty. You are important.

And for all of us, regardless of our purpose, remem-ber, “You Are A Difference Maker”. ■

December 10th. We can all understand how challenging a job change and major move can be with a four-year-old and a newborn. Pastor Scott will be posting brief audio messages with updates on his move and transition plans. Web links to his messages are posted at the Ascension website, alcrpv.org. Check them out! The Church Council is working with Pastor Scott as plans are put together for his first Sunday preaching at Ascension. Communications will be forthcoming as we will want to give the entire Hawkins family a very warm welcome to the Ascension family!! Please pray for the Hawkins family as they undertake a major move and for the Ascension family as we begin our exciting new season together. ■

O Approved the Review Committee members who will conduct the financial review of the Church and Preschool.

Merry Christmas, Bisti Navajo Children! Yes, look what we did! Cash dona-tions: $1,803. Part of this amount came from the Women’s Tea and we thank them. Then we had 319 hand-knitted hats made by the ladies of LCGS, plus two of our ALC ladies. Thank you, Carol Epp and Jill Grabert! Together, those two ladies made over 50 hats! Jacquie Starodub’s junior-high math classes donated: 233 pairs of new socks, 38 pairs of new gloves, 6 new hats, plus 63 pairs of good used socks, 2 hats, 2 scarves, 1 robe, 1 coat and 3 pairs of mittens. Linda Landhuis donated 151 like-new Beanie Babies. 14-year-old Joseph Tree got his own special box with a new Bible, a hand-made bookmark, a Bible marking pen, a Bible cover case, a red hoodie, a tie, a shirt and two stocking caps. Yes, we all did great and the Caring Through Prayer Team thanks you. You have made Christmas much better for these Navajo children.

Director of Worship and Music

William Dix was the manager for an insurance company in Britain

in 1865 when he was suddenly struck with a severe and unexpected illness. As he lay on his sickbed, near death, he experienced a religious conversion. He did recover from his illness, and then wrote several hymns, including As With Gladness, Men of Old, and What Child is This? The latter hymn was set to the tune of a familiar English folksong melody, “Greensleeves.” The first verse goes like this:

The writer poses questions from our common human experience. Parents gaze at their newborn baby and wonder: “Who are you? What does life hold in store for you?” Joseph and Mary surely wondered about the strange events leading up to Jesus’ birth. And then, com-plete strangers (the shepherds) showed up at the manger to share in their intimate family moment! Our world still wrestles with the fundamental question concerning this

baby in the manger. “Who are you?” And so, another Christmas season is upon us, amid all of the tinsel and commercial trappings of our popular culture. We’ll probably do our part to assure that our favorite merchants do in-deed turn a profit this year. Maybe we’re busy obsessing about the design of the Starbucks’ coffee cups in December, or railing against people who say “Happy Holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas.”

But what’s the real point here? Running through the whole season—and beyond —are these central ques-tions as we consider the newborn Jesus: “Who are you?

Why are you? What does it matter?” The Christian life is a journey during which we are continually asking—and answering—these very questions. May your Christmas experience be deep, real

and meaningful this year, as you look forward to a new season in the family of God. Blessed Christmas to you and yours! ■

What child is this, who, laid to rest on Mary’s lap is sleeping?Whom angels greet with anthems sweet while shepherds watch are keeping? This, this is Christ the king, whom shepherds guard and angels wing;Haste, haste to bring him laud, the babe, the son of Mary!

Through Love INC, Ascension is collecting gift cards for South Bay children who are in foster care. They are request-ing gift cards, specifically from Target and Walmart, in $20 or $25 amounts. If you don’t have time to purchase the gift cards yourself, money donations made out to “As-cension Lutheran Church” will be accepted. Just designate “Love INC” in the memo of your check(s). Money donations must be received by Sunday, December 6th so the church has time to pur-chase the gift cards on your behalf. Gift card donations will be accepted up until noon on Monday, December 14th. With your support, we can shine the Light of Christ and help provide these children with a more blessed Christ-mas. Let’s give those children big Christmas smiles!

way to meet the needs of those coming through for Thanksgiving. Your contributions went a long way to help them reach their goals. Ascension has always been a warm, caring and supportive church and your help this year has made my spirit burst with gratitude! In addition to everyone who contributed to the Food Drive, I would like to thank Dave Snow for his amazing creative assistance, Joe Payne for his coordination efforts, Mary Whitman for willingly responding to all of my various requests for help, Thrivent Financial for donating $1,000 to our food drive, and all of the people who sorted, packed and delivered the food at the end.

—Betsy AndersonAdmin note: The Ascension congregation gives a shout-out to Betsy and Jim Anderson! They organized, displayed and shopped for the food. In doing so, they inspired us to give generously. Thank you, Andersons!

It was a comfort and joy to know that so many friends were praying for me. After three months of rehab, I am home again and continuing to recuperate. I hope to see you all soon!" —Arlene King

God entered in to our world both fully human and fully God to take part in the greatest

rescue mission the world has ever known. A coup the sorts of which Jason Bourne, Ethan Hunt or even James Bond would be envious of. But what about now? Where are we, 2000 years removed from the birth of Jesus? What does God have to say to us today in the season we are in and the culture and community we are a part of? Invite a neighbor or a friend to join us throughout the month of December as we navigate through a unique Star Wars-themed series packed with authentic applicable gospel messages speaking directly to us in the here and now.

A long time ago…in a manger far, far away…

This series is the perfect outreach opportunity to courageously invite those without a church home or a relationship with God. We will have Star Wars movie clips, Bible verses read by James Earl Jones (the voice of Darth Vader himself), as well as movie ticket giveaways, outstanding worship, and authentic, relevant Gospel teachings. Please share the news with those who need to hear it!

Kids Rock! News

by Melissa Sobey

New Kids Rock! Ministry Director

I’m so excited to be working with Kids Rock!

I moved to Orange County two years ago, and I love living in Southern Califor-nia. I had lived in El Paso, Texas my whole life, attending the same church for nearly 28 years. During my time there, I spent about ten years teaching a kids' choir called the Promise Choir, and about five years teaching vocals in the youth group and adult choir. I have really missed hear-ing the beautiful voices of the kiddos. I look forward to helping the Kids Rock! kids build a musical foundation. I hope to incorporate some basic theory lessons and fun vocal exercises (some that are sure to drive you parents a little batty!), while introducing them to Psalms and songs that magnify our great God. I look forward to what is to come for Kids Rock! Email me at [email protected]. God Bless! ■

They’re back! Our favorite storyteller and commentator Saul Jacobs returns to Ascension with master pianist side-kick Bob Lipson for another segment of their Golden Age of American Popular Music series. They’ll entertain

us with music, photos and videos of Broadway and film musical legends, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammer-stein. We’re in for a treat so be sure to save the date. Please sign up by Sun-day, January 10 on the sheet posted in

the Social Hall, or call the church office. Make your check out to Ascension Lutheran Church and note “OWLs – January” in the memo section. OWLs events are open to all, so please join us!

Ascension Book ClubIn January, we’ll meet on Friday the 22nd at 1:30 in the Fireside Room. The book is Dead
