Principal’s Note Dear Ashley Families, When I was asked about writing something for the PTA newsletter, I thought about what the goal should be for my messages to you. I don’t get many opportunities to speak to the parents at Ashley and wanted to make this brief interaction (250 words) worth everyone’s time. As a parent myself, I tried to think about what I would want to read from my own children’s principal. I came up with several things, but the overall theme was, “I want to know how my husband and I can be a better parents and raise responsible, contributing, independent, caring individuals (who will eventually move out of our house and support themselves ).” I am not sure I will pick things that will interest everyone, but exposing us to topics that will widen our perspective on parenting and education should be a good place to start. Since I have used almost all of the words allowed for this newsletter, I wanted to leave you with a link to a daily blog I get from Tim Elmore. Principal’s Note Dear Ashley Families,

Maturity, for one of my doctoral classes. Most of his work centers on growing leaders. Hence the name of the blog: http://growingleaders.com/blog/. Like most blogs, some entries interest me more than others, but overall his topics are timely and targeted. I also do not always agree with everything he writes, but his words challenge my thinking and practices as a parent and educator. For me that’s never a bad thing.

PTA News Dear Ashley Families,
It's hard to believe that school is back in session and in full swing! It seems like just a few weeks ago I was wishing you all a fabulous summer and now here we are talking about Ashley Dash, 5th Grade Fundraisers and Class Parties!
The PTA Board has been hard at work since August planning a great year for the Ashley family and we have already had some awesome events. The WatchDOG program got off to a great start with our Pizza with Dads on September 29th and the Book Fair was also a MONSTER success with our Reading Under the Stars event!!
There is LOTS more to come including our main fundraiser, The Ashley Dash, on October 23rd. We had such a successful Dash last year and hope we can do the same this year with your help! As a board we love

the Dash because not only does it not require the buying or selling of products, but it's an actual fun event that the kids look forward to. This year the money raised will not only provide multiple programs for the kids but also math enrichment resources as well as playground enhancements (all weather turf ).
There is TONS of information in the following and lots of fun is to be had this year!

Teacher Appreciation Jaclyn Whisenant is the Teacher Appreciation Week Chair for the Ashley PTA this year. (You will also see it referred to as TAW.) I am new to board and very excited about this position. As a past educator Teacher Appreciation Week is a special week for teachers as well as the students when they get to spoil their teachers with gratitude! This fun week for the staff is not until May, however we treated the staff to a little surprise in their boxes every day the first week of school. They received items like notepads, pens, post-its, caffeine & chocolate (who doesn’t need that), a personalized cup and even a hefty pencil sharpener for the grade level classrooms! Check out some of the neat surprises they received. I look forward to May when we get to spoil them more!

Game On! Melissa Walch is the contact person for the Trophy cases & PTA Bulletin board. Our theme this year is Game On! Each grade level & staff member got to choose a game board theme to be represented in each trophy case. The PTA board currently has a Pac-Man theme. Reflections Contest The Reflections Theme this year is "Let Your Imagination Fly". All submissions are due to the office by October 30th and one adult from the child's household must be a member of the PTA according to a new state rule for entries. Healthy Lifestyles Hello Ashley Families! My name is Jennifer TenBrink and I am the Ashley PTA Healthy Lifestyles Chair.
