JAPANESE MARKET
• Demand for sashimi tuna remains highly seasonal strengthening during the spring festivals in April/May/ year end
• The market imported less fresh tuna; increasing in frozen import of sashimi grade loins
• Loins from South Korea, China, Pacific (Fiji, Vanuatu etc), Vietnam, Taiwan(deep frozen)
• Mainly due to longer shelf life • Comprised both high end bluefin
and cheaper red meat tuna

Canned tuna imports in other markets
• During the high-price period, imports were stagnant in East Asia but improved in Sri Lanka and Iran due to high raw material prices and financial embargo (on Iran)
• Iran- has a huge local industry • When raw material prices came
down, they started processing for local market and neighboring Central Asian countries

Perspective..• The markets in Asia remained flat for canned tuna • Japanese style restaurants (sushi and sashimi) have expanded
significantly in most of Asia • The number of Japanese style restaurants eg in Thailand increased 2.2
times over 5 years; 1 753 restaurants as of June 2017 in greater Bangkok; rest of Thailand 960.
• According to the Organization to Promote Japanese Restaurants Abroad (JRO) – Japanese style restaurants take a 8.3% share of all restaurants in Thailand
• Although the share of tuna consumed through these restaurants have not been quantified, this offers an opportunity for growth
• Biggest advantage of the Pacific: Own your fishery • However direct exports are much below compared to opportunities
present • Target needs to be more on direct trade between PNA and the markets
be it processed or raw fish exports
THANK YOU
