Detergent compartment

Here are some tips that may help you beforewashing.

Sorting your laundrySort items according to:• how soiled they are• color• material

Clothing1. Close zippers and Velcro straps so they won’t

damage fabrics.2. New colored items may contain excess dye

and should therefore be washed separatelythe first few times.

3. Turn delicate items inside out. This reducesthe risk of burling and fading.

4. Empty pockets and wash them inside out ifpossible.

Laundry labelsLook at the item’s laundry label. The table belowshows suitable wash programs for differentmaterials andwash loads. Usingmodernwashingmachines and detergents, such as compactdetergents, you can usually wash at lowertemperatures. It is a good idea to use trial anderror to find out what produces the best results.

Advice and tips before washing

Colored cottonColored cotton items labeled 140°F (60°C) shouldbe washed at 140°F (60°C) the first time in orderto remove any excess dye. If you do not do so,there is a risk that the color will run. Use detergentwithout bleach in order to preserve the color ofthe fabric.

Unbleached linenUnbleached linen fabrics should be washed at140°F (60°C), using detergent containing nobleach or optical whiteners. Heavily-soiled linencan occasionally be washed at highertemperatures, but not too often as the heat candestroy the linen’s sheen and strength.

WoolThese fabrics are labeled either machine washor hand wash. The Wool/Hand Wash program isat least as gentle as washing by hand.Wool is especially sensitive to processes such aswashing. If you do not wish to spin dry, you can squeezeout the water using terrycloth towels. In this caseselect No spin.To find out how to choose this setting, see the"Operating instructions" chapter. However, mostgarments can withstand a short spin. Choose ashort spin by selecting a spin speed of 800 rpmor less.

Rayon fibers and synthetic fibersMaterials made of rayon fibers, such as viscose, and some synthetic fibers are very delicate andrequire much space to avoid wrinkling. Only halffill the drum when washing and choose a spinspeed of 800 rpm or lower.

Note!Viscose and acetates are fragile when wet.

Reducing allergic reactionsThe washing machine has a Super Rinse option.Use this for people with sensitive skin, such asthose with allergies and small children.

Save time and energyUse the Color program to save time and energy. This programhas a shortermainwash thanWhite, but is often sufficient for lightly soiled laundry.

Economy and efficiencyYou can save a lot of energy by not using highertemperature programs than necessary.• Select Quick if you just need to freshen up

shirts or exercise clothes, for example. Thiswill save both water and energy.

• If you select a fast spin speed, this reducesenergy consumption when drying in a tumbledryer or drying cabinet.

• Always wash with a full load when using theSani, Color, and White programs.

• Avoid pre-washing. Modern machines anddetergents clean effectively withoutpre-washing. Pre-washing is only necessaryfor heavily soiled laundry.

DetergentsEco-labeled detergents are less harmful to theenvironment.Detergent overdosing does not give betterwashing results; it merely causes a greater impacton the environment.Try to use less detergent, and increase only if youare not satisfied with the results.

Dyeing fabricsIf you want to dye fabrics in the machine, selectthe Color program with the Super Rinse option.Select the temperature according to the dyemanufacturer’s recommendations.Choose a low spin speed if the fabric to be dyedis a blended material, such aspolyester/cotton.

Note!Add the dye directly to the washing drum – notto the detergent compartment. After dyeing, youshould run the machine empty using the sameprogram. Use the normal amount of detergent.

Advice and tips before washing

Note!Due to environmental concerns, we discouragethe use of strong chemicals. When using agents for bleaching or stainremoval, there is a risk of rust (corrosion) anddiscoloration of the machine.

Liquid detergentsWe don’t recommend liquid detergents becausethey tend to produce more suds than powderdetergents when used in water temperatures of150° F or higher. If you should try a liquiddetergent, start with a very small amount, suchas 1 to 2 tablespoons. Also, liquid detergent canbe used for all programswithout prewash, so addit into the main wash compartment.

DetergentsLaundry detergents are available in low-, normal-and high-sudsing formulas. A detergent´s abilityto clean is not relative to the amount of suds itproduces. Excess suds in a front-loading washeractually interfere with the cleaning because theycushion the tumbling action. Also, high-sudsingdetergents are more difficult to completely rinseout. The use of anything other than a low-sudsingdetergent can cause severe oversudsing, whichcould cause suds to backup through the detergentcompartment and rundown the front of thewasheronto the floor. If oversudsing occurs, run thewashthrough one ormore rinse programs until all itemsare thoroughly rinsed. Remove the laundry thenrun the washer through a Normal wash programto get rid of any remaining detergent. We recommend that you don’t use bleach in yourASKO washer. The tumbling wash action, temperature control options, extendedwash timesand proper amount of detergent are sufficient toremove most stains.

Recommended powder detergentsASKO washers use 50% to 75% less detergentthanmost other washers. This is because of theirlow water consumption and the fact that all thewash water is repeatedly circulated through thelaundry, ensuring that all the detergent is fullyutilized. We recommend that you use powderdetergents made specifically for front-loadingwashers. These are sometimes called HE(High-Efficiency) detergents. Please visit ourhomepage www.askousa.com to see the powderdetergents we recommend for ASKO washers. We recommend that you do not use any powderdetergent that doesn’t wash completely out of thedetergent drawer.

Detergent AmountsBasedonWaterHardnessThe amount of detergent needed can vary due todifferences in water hardness. To determine thewater hardness in your area, contact your localwater utility or areawater softening company. Theharder the water, the more detergent you mayneed. Refer to the chart below for therecommendeddetergent amounts basedonwaterhardness. Remember, you should adjust theamount of detergent you use by small amountsuntil you find the correct amount.Note that 12 grains and higher is extremely hardwater and detergent alone may not be enough.Youmay need to use awater softener tomaximizethe performance of your washer. Also, in areaswith extremely hard water (9+) you may need towash at lower temperatures to prevent hardwaterdeposits from forming in the tank and washsystem.

Advice and tips before washing

Amount of detergent to useThe amount of detergent needed varies amongthe different brands, but for most detergents, youneed only one or two tablespoons. Using toomuch detergent can result in detergent residuebeing left in your clothes, which can cause themto appear gray or dingy. You should start with asmall amount of detergent and increase it only ifthe cleaning results are unsatisfactory.Additionally, you should never put detergent inthe prewash compartment unless you are usinga wash program that has a prewash cycle. Thiscould causeexcess foaming, which could damagethe machine. The amount of detergent needed canalso dependon the hardness of the water in your area. Care and maintenance instructions

Cleaning the inside of the machineto avoid unpleasant smellsModern detergents often allow laundry to bewashed at low temperatures. This means thatsmall deposits can build up in themachine. These,in turn, may lead to unpleasant odors developing. To avoid this, we recommend running a 203°F(95°C) wash program once a month. When youdo this, use a small quantity of detergent. It is notnecessary to put any laundry in the machine.
