Traditions: they come and they go. by Tom McCabe, Exalted Ruler

Photo

: Sue JacksonThe BPOE has a long history, at least for an American insti-

tution. I find it interesting that changes to the traditions of theOrder have happened often enough that change itself might beconsidered a tradition.

For instance, until 1956 the Elks traditional covering for thealter was the American flag. Until 1890 the BPOE had a twodegree ritual and enough “side degrees” were in vogue that theGrand Lodge took action to outlaw all “side degrees”.

Early candidates were required to provide a physician’s exami-nation indicating that they were in top condition before theywere even considered a prospect.

The traditional ritual that we all know to include dimmedlights and beautiful words was not a tradition in the earlyBPOE. Early candidates were led blindfolded into the Lodge

room and much trickery ensued. For in-stance the Ashland Lodge made their candi-date wear lead shoes designed to make thewearer appear to be intoxicated.

The old Ritual Book spells out other gagsincluding having the members agree, insupport of the Exalted Ruler’s declaration, that the candidate be “shaved”. Then a “citybarber” would scrape the faces of the blind-folded candidates with a dull file to “shave” them. The old Rit-ual Book also described other pranks such as makingblindfolded candidates walk on “broken glass” (egg shells) andeven concluded with real guns firing blanks behind the wearyand confused new members.

The lambskin aprons used for ritual were discontinued in1895 and the use of a password was ended in 1899. The Lodgebadge was eliminated in 1902, and the secret grip went by theway in 1904. The “ Test Oath” was removed in 1911, blindfolds

This is our 23rd issue of the Aspen Leafas editors. It is with some sad feelingsand yet a feeling of relief that we wouldlike to announce we are resigning as edi-tors after this issue. It has been a chal-lenge and, for the most part has been fun.Information gathering is the hardest part.

We would like to thank all the peoplethat have helped out in our endeavor toimprove our newsletter (officially knownas a bulletin). From our staff photographers, Arlene Nelson and LauraMcCabe; to our photo editors over theyears, Sheila Babbie and Cliff Mohwinkelbefore her; to Carole Johnston from CDJDesign who does our layout work; to In-dependence Press who prints and handles

our mailing process; and to Beth Hagertywho provides help in many ways, for put-ting up with last minute demands andchanges that I hope have helped makethings more timely and accurate.

Also, some of you have sent photos, provided articles, or provided informa-tion for articles and we appreciate thatinput very much.

On Thursday, October 31, we helped host the kids’ annual

Halloween party at the Aspen Recreation Center. The party was

held outside the ice ring on the lower level. The costumes the

children wore were great and everyone had a good time. We

served about 120 hot dogs, cookies and beverages. Thanks to all

the volunteers who helped make this a success: Captain, Greg,

Arlene, Laura, Jon, Cheryl, and Linda .The festivities and fri-

volities continued that evening at the Lodge. Music was pro-

vided by Smokin’ Joe Kelly.

A Tribute to Helen by Brian O’Neil, President, C.E.A.

‘Sands of Time’

Helen Klanderud was an amazing person. She has passed away from us and our community is saddened with that loss. Her lifewas dedicated to helping others. She truly cared about Aspen and its citizens. I can’t remember when I first met Helen, but it wasshortly after I moved here in 1976. We became friends and I was proud to have her friendship.

I am not going to write about her many accomplishments that she achieved. They have been written up in all of local papers.Helen became an Elk around 2002 and she was a good one. I worked with her at Senior Luncheons and Veterans events. Helenloved people and they loved Helen. Whenever a visiting dignitary came to our Lodge or a Scholarship Banquet was taking place, I would invite Helen to come and speak to the guests. She would always make time to be there.

Helen appointed me to the Wheeler Board of Directors. We worked together and I was amazed at her ability to handle difficultsituations and the range of her knowledge. She was always polite in her manner but she was also tough and firm when she had tobe. Our Lodge and our community have lost a special friend, however she will always be a part of Aspen’s history and we who haveknown her will never forget her.

Veterans Day from pg. 1 —that was compiled as a team effort whilehe was in captivation and was publishedin 1946.
