Peter and Daniel both remind us that the words of Jesus we hear in Scripture are none other than the words of the beloved Son of the Ancient One, who is the Most High over all the earth. We would do well to pay close attention to these words. In the first reading, the Prophet Daniel observes the Ancient One on his throne, to whom is presented one like a Son of Man who will receive everlasting dominion. The second reading reminds us that Jesus is the beloved son of the Father. In the Gospel, Jesus takes Peter, James and John up the mountain where he is transfigured. The disciples then see Moses and Elijah conversing with him. Eucharistic Adoration: All are invited to spend time with Jesus in the Eucharist. Eucharistic Adoration is each Friday from 8:45 to 11:45 am. Monthly Mass and Healing Service: The Monthly Mass & Healing service has been cancelled for the months of July and August. Social Apostolate Food Drive: The next food drive is August 5 & 6. Please place your non-perishable food donations in the bin by the Altar of St. Anthony in the front of the church. Life in the Spirit Seminar: Pauline Books and Media, 4403 Vets Blvd., is hosting a Life in the Spirit Seminar on September 16, 10am to 3pm. Call 828-1368 for details. O God, who in the glorious Transfiguration of your Only Begotten Son confirmed the mysteries of faith by the witness of the Fathers and wonderfully prefigured our full adoption to sonship, grant, we pray, to your servants, that, listening to the voice of your beloved Son, we may merit to become co-heirs with him. Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary The Mass schedule for the Assumption is: Monday, August 14: 6:00 p.m. Vigil (English) Tuesday, August 15: 8:15 a.m. (School Mass) and 12:10 p.m. (English) 7:00 p.m. (Español) This is a Holy Day of Obligation. Parish School of Religion Classes will begin on Tuesday, September 5 and will continue each Tuesday from 6:15 pm to 7:45 pm in the school auditorium. Registration will take place during the first class. We are also in need of teachers, both English speaking and bilingual. Teaching experience is not necessary; we will train you! The Transfiguration of the Lord Christ’s Tabor radiance is a kind of mirror in which we glimpse the glo- ry that God wills to give his friends. The resplendence of the Transfiguration reveals the fullness of life destined to be ours. The Transfiguration invites us to configuration. As we peer into the glory that pours from every pore of the transfigured Christ, we cast off everything unworthy for our personal relationship with the Infinite, and we take on the luster of the Son of God. Jesus gazed back at us with a luminous look of love that makes us desire to live his transparent beauty—to be luminaries. Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraph 555
For a moment Jesus discloses his divine glory, confirming Peter's
confession. He also reveals that he will have to go by the way of the
cross at Jerusalem in order to "enter into his glory". Moses and Elijah
had seen God's glory on the Mountain; the Law and the Prophets had
announced the Messiah's sufferings. Christ's Passion is the will of the
Father: the Son acts as God's servant; the cloud indicates the presence
of the Holy Spirit. "The whole Trinity appeared: the Father in the
voice; the Son in the man; the Spirit in the shining cloud."
You were transfigured on the mountain, and your disciples, as much
as they were capable of it, beheld your glory, O Christ our God, so
that when they should see you crucified they would understand that
your Passion was voluntary, and proclaim to the world that you truly
are the splendor of the Father.
After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high
mountain apart by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his
clothes became dazzling white, such as no fuller on earth could bleach them.
Then Elijah appeared to them along with Moses, and they were conversing
with Jesus. Mark 9:2-4
