My first and only trip to Europe was in the summer of 2000. My sister was studying art history at

Scuola Lorenzo de’ Medici in Florence, Italy, and our three-week lap of Europe after her program ended was to be my own version of Art History 101.

I did my best to prepare, including buying a copy of a European art history book whose title I no longer recall. Nonetheless, it was my reading companion for the long flight from Washington, D.C., to Brussels, Belgium. It was like Cliffs Notes for art newbies, and it didn’t take me long to prepare for some of the masterpieces I would see at places like the Louvre, Musee d’Orsay, the Vatican Museums, the Uffizi Gallery and the Van Gogh Museum.

But as one museum visit melded into the next, I learned an important lesson about art. It is this: Art is as individual as the people who view it. For that matter, art is like wine. Fancy labels and expensive bottles mean little if you don’t like the way the wine tastes.

While mobs of tourists surround the “Mona Lisa,” considerably less give the same attention to “The Madonna with the Long Neck” by Parmigianino. Does that make the “Mona Lisa” better, or just more popular?

Fast forward to June of this year. During a weeklong vacation in New York City, I spent an afternoon in MoMA, the renowned Museum of Modern Art. Hanging on the walls of the museum’s

maze-like exhibit rooms are the works of such acclaimed artists as Henri Matisse, Vincent Van Gogh, Salvador Dali, Andy Warhol and Pablo Picasso.

On the sixth floor of the museum, a small crowd gathered around a curious work by an Argentine artist named León Ferrari. To create “Juicio Final,” or “Last Judgment,” Ferrari left a poster of Michelangelo’s “Last Judgment” under a bird cage until it was mostly covered in bird droppings. The piece is supposedly a commentary on the biblical concept of hell, but I found it to be more a bad excuse for “art.” The placard next to Ferrari’s work declared that the artist was perhaps the first to use animal excretion in his work.

How revolutionary, I thought. But it brings me back to the lesson I

learned about art while in Europe. Just because I don’t like it doesn’t mean others won’t, or shouldn’t. I have zero artistic ability but much admiration for those who express themselves through their talent.

In the Q&A of this edition of At Home in Steamboat Springs magazine, local artist Mike Benninghoven discusses the struggles younger artists have with showing their work in public settings. It’s difficult to be judged, Benninghoven acknowledges, but nonetheless important for their creative expressions to be shared. I couldn’t agree more. Even if means another up-close encounter with bird droppings.

Oil painter Anne Holt always has had a taste for the country, taking any chance she can to get outside and get everything she sees down on canvas.

After studying art at Colby College in Waterville, Maine, and showing her paintings at galleries around New England, Holt made her way to Colorado to paint plein air works and enjoy the scenery.

She made it to Steamboat Springs in fall 2008, joined the cooperative roster at Artists’ Gal-lery of Steamboat and worked as a development assistant at The Lowell Whiteman School. At the Steamboat Arts & Crafts Gym, Holt taught beginning oil painting for adults and drawing, painting and ceramics to teens and children ages 6 to 15.

A stickler for color, Holt instructed her students to mix all the hues in their landscapes before they started painting. She prefers to work from a limited palette of red, blue and yellow, mixing colors with a palette knife before she applies them to scenes of sunsets, overlooks and picturesque parts of the day.

With a focus on capturing how a place feels — instead of exactly how it looks — Holt looks to light and color to add expression to her pieces. The artist headed back East for the summer to teach art at New Canaan Country School in New Canaan, Conn., and plans to come back to Steamboat

Sea scallops over caponata is rela-tively straightforward, but the process behind crafting the wine Dave Sypert

recommends pairing with it is anything but.Amarone della Valpolicella is a unique

Italian red wine. Vintners allow grapes to partially dry, or “rasinate,” for a few months before squeezing them.

“It’s a really unique process in wine making,” said Sypert, owner and chef at Giovanni’s Ristorante in downtown Steam-boat Springs. “The juice from that grape is very intense. … It brings a lot of intensity and body to the wine without the tannins.”

Tannins are the astringent, bitter chemi-cal substances that are responsible for the dry and puckered feeling in the mouth associated with some wines. Amarone has a deep ruby red color; a full body; a complex nose that emphasizes dried fruit, almonds and a hint of anise; extremely rich flavors; a long, smooth finish; and a lingering after-taste. These characteristics usually would suggest a high tannin content, but that’s not the case with Amarone. In short, Amarone has the intensity necessary to stand up to a savory dish such as caponata without the downsides that often turn people away from red wine.

“If you have a very stringent wine, you want a steak or something to cleanse the palate,” Sypert said. “That’s what makes this wine pair so well with a lot of differ-ent foods. If you’re not a huge red wine drinker, you may still like this wine.”

The complex process behind Amarone also is an expensive one, and Sypert said a bottle can easily cost about $100. He recommends a 2004 bottle by Luigi Righetti, which he sells in the restaurant for $68.

The way Sypert describes it, you may be tempted to skip the dish and go straight for the wine. The interaction between the two, however, is worth the short wait.

“This is one of those classic Italian dishes that’s very simple and easy,” Sypert said. “It takes two pans to make this.”

Although simple, there also are a few key points to remember.

“The secret is a hot pan and the oil,” he said.

You’ll know the oil is hot enough when the oil starts to pool on top of the pan. When you toss in the scallops, they should stick to the pan right away.

“You want that oil to bubble immedi-ately,” Sypert said. “If it’s not bubbling im-mediately, it’s not hot enough,”

When the scallops let go of the pan, they’re ready to flip. They should sear to golden brown in seconds.

“Another issue is using fresh scallops as opposed to frozen scallops,” Sypert said. “Once you freeze a scallop and the fibers in it take on water, they don’t sear as nicely.”

Be sure not to skimp on the oil in your

second pan. You’ll be sautéing the eggplant first, and — like mushrooms — eggplant has a tendency to absorb a lot of oil. Al-low the cubed eggplant to sear on its own for a few minutes before adding the other ingredients. Sypert uses sun-dried tomatoes, roasted red peppers, fresh diced tomatoes, Kalamata olives and garlic and ties it all to-gether with a bit of marinara, but this dish

allows for a great amount of creativity.“As long as you have eggplant and to-

mato, you can do whatever you want with the dish; it’s yours,” Sypert said. “You can add a litany of other things to it.”

Sypert also noted that the caponata alone is “an awesome vegan dish” and that sea scallops can be replaced with pine nuts or tofu.

Sautéed sea scallops over a bed of eggplant caponata,

drizzled with red wine agrodolce and olive oil (for two)

Scallops6 to 8 large sea scallops, seared in

olive oil and set aside.

CaponataIngredients2 to 3 ounces olive oil

1 eggplant, cubed

1/4 cup of sun-dried tomatoes

1/4 cup of roasted red peppers

1/4 cup Kalamata olives

1/4 cup whole roasted garlic cloves

(can substitute with chopped garlic)

1 tablespoon fresh chopped parsley

Salt to tastePepper to taste

PreparationSauté cubed eggplant in olive oil for

three minutes. Add sun-dried toma-

toes, roasted red peppers, Kalamata

olives and roasted garlic cloves, then

sauté an additional two minutes.

Remove from heat. Add parsley and

salt and pepper to taste.

AgrodolceIngredients8 ounces white wine vinegar

4 ounces red wine

2 tablespoons sugar

PreparationSimmer vinegar and wine until

reduced by one-third. Add sugar, and

reduce to desired thickness.

Plate PreparationPlace caponata on center of plate,

top with seared scallops, drizzle with

agrodolce.


Mike Kirlan, owner of Vino, has a few suggestions for choosing what wine to pair with your meal:

The most important thing to remember is not to get too stressed about the “rules.” If you like red wine and you’re serving fish, drink red wine.

We recommend looking at the weight and textures of the foods you’re serving, and try to match those most closely with the wine. For example, a light, fresh piece of fish will pair best with a similar type of wine — say a Sauvignon Blanc or a Pinot Grigio. If you’re serving something heavy and rich, such as braised short ribs, think big, bold reds such as a Barolo.

The one thing that really helps a wine work with food is for it to have acidity — that sort of tangy freshness you can taste in certain wines. This also helps the wine complement the food, not overpower it. There also are a few wines that are sort of “no-brainers,” which match with a huge variety of foods: Pinot Noir and softer Gr-enache-based wines for reds. Riesling (yes, Riesling!), Gruner Veltliner (from Austria) and some white Burgundies for whites. These are versatile and crowd-pleasing styles that are great choices if in doubt about what to pair.

Tips on pairing food with WINE

Mike Kirlan, owner of Vino, offers his tips for picking the perfect wine to go with almost any meal.

Essential oils and aromatherapy aren’t just about pretty smells, Allyse Eggleston said. They can improve

Life Essentials, and she uses essential oils on herself and her family. The oils also can be incorporated into massages and other spa services.

The effects can be potent.“We’ve had people releasing (such)

huge amounts of emotional stress that they were crying on the massage table,” Eggleston said.

She has used essential oils for about 12 years for headaches and burns and even as perfume. People can inhale, ingest or topically apply essential oils, Eggleston said. Using therapeutic-grade products is crucial, she said.

Eggleston looks for oils that are heated at lower temperatures for long periods. Too much heat destroys the potency, she said.

“I think the majority of people who think they do not work have not worked with therapeutic-grade essential oils,” Egg-leston said.

The oils are made from plants, seeds and bark. The products she carries don’t include any synthetic materials. They’re better with-out those, Eggleston said.

“Essential oils possess potent antibacte-rial, antifungal, antiviral and anti-inflamma-tory qualities,” she said.

Her spa does a full-body essential oil treatment using about 144 oils, Eggleston said. Good therapeutic essential oils are ef-fective two to five hours after application.

“We’ve got tons and tons of testimonies as to how it works for people,” she said.

But people also can use them at home. They can cook with oils such as lemon, wipe them on heating ducts, drop oils in their bathtubs or apply them to a pot of water after it boils.

Life Essentials sells oils and teaches people how to use them, Eggleston said. Eucalyptus, peppermint and lemon are popular, she said. Thieves oil also is a fa-vorite. It’s a blend of oils that grave robbers used during the bubonic plague, Eggleston said. It kills most bacteria.

But for the most part, people who come to Life Essentials are looking to relax. They make a beeline for lavender, she said, which is fine by Eggleston.

“What we say around here, when in doubt, use lavender,” she said.

For the first five years he lived in Steamboat, mixed media artist Mike

Benninghoven shied away from the local gallery scene.

He’d studied art intensely in high school and won a full ride to Rocky Mountain College of the Arts. But a few weeks after he showed up at the college, Benninghoven left, hopping first to Hawaii, then home to the Front Range and then to Steamboat.

Even in the few years since he decided to take a risk and show his contemporary, urban-inspired pieces to former gallery owner Susan Schiesser, Benninghoven’s road to art venue walls has been bumpy: Schiesser Gallery closed. Wired Lounge — a Ski Time Square music venue where Benninghoven organized open exhibitions for young artists — was demolished. A home studio — where Benninghoven brought artists to make collaborative pieces — was lost.

In fall 2008, Benninghoven found a new home as resident artist and exhibit coordinator for Urbane, a clothing boutique owned by two of his friends. His work — characterized these days by an inventive use of vinyl inspired by graffiti stencils and incorporating images that are sometimes political and almost always set in bold tones — has found a place in Urbane since the store opened in November. Every three months, co-owners Mel LeBlanc and Trent Kolste work with Benninghoven to organize an open group show, and the team finds new favorite artists to feature each month.

Benninghoven sat down in Urbane with At Home’s Margaret Hair on a late spring afternoon to talk about finding fresh ways to make art and to get it shown.

AT HOME: What motivated you to take that first step back into showing your work?MIKE BENNINGHOVEN: It was building up, and I had so much of it — I probably had 20 pieces at my house at the time, and they were just laying around on the tables and some on the floor and just rolled up into a big roll. I wanted to see if I could do something with it. … I never did it really for anybody else, and I still don’t do it for anybody else. A lot of it is just kind of my outlet. But I guess it’s good to see if other people are into it.

AH: Tell me about your efforts with Wired and now Urbane to help young or new artists get exposure.MB: I feel like I really lucked out with Susan (Schiesser), and I didn’t really know it at the time. It wasn’t until I went down to Denver and started talking to some galleries down there that I realized just how hard it is to even approach galleries. …I saw an opportunity, and it just came to my mind that you get so many people coming in and out of Steamboat, and a lot of people are fresh out of school. I’m sure there are other artists that come through and are just here for a little while and maybe never show their work, and I thought it would be cool to kind of tap into that. …I’d been talking to Trent (Kolste) and Mel (LeBlanc) about their spot, and they were looking at a model that’s in Salt Lake City that’s really art heavy. … We just developed the idea as we’ve been going of keeping in touch with trying to keep the fresh artists in here and people from all levels of art.

AH: What are the challenges of getting work together to show in Steamboat?MB: I think a big challenge is kind of making sure your stuff is at a level where it can be hung and look nice. And I think there are a lot of people who don’t necessarily want their artwork to be judged or (think) that people may be judging.I’m sure that’s really hard to overcome, but I think if you’re doing the artwork for yourself, it doesn’t really matter what other people think in the end. Although it can be discouraging to hear negative stuff, hopefully you can take it on the chin and take it with a grain of salt and keep moving forward and maybe use it as constructive criticism.I think if you’re a creative person, you can always create new ways around or over or through obstacles. You can figure out a way to conquer different things.

When Carrie Nelson ordered fish tacos in Oregon, the food server brought an entire deep-fried rockfish with tortillas on the side.

People don’t vacation in Newport, Ore., because they want to frolic in the surf. The average water

temperature all summer long is 55 degrees. Instead, they go to Oregon’s beaches to indulge their taste for fresh seafood, particularly shellfish. They go to lose track of the real world while falling asleep to the sound of the pounding surf. They go to take advantage of endless beachcombing opportunities and the chance to spot a whale sounding beyond the breakers.

Oregon’s well-preserved beaches yield up tiny agates already semi-polished by the waves and sand; there are sand dollar shells the size of small pancakes and the orange husks of Dungeness crabs. Most of the public beaches are part of the state park system, and admission is free of charge.

The Oregon coast is an easy destination from Steamboat Springs — and well worthwhile if you have five days to invest. We took advantage of $215 fares from Denver in May for a family reunion.

Expect a 2.5-hour flight plus a 75-minute drive from the airport to Cannon Beach, where you can marvel at the iconic sight of Haystack Rock. Newport is almost three hours from the airport but includes benefits such as the Oregon Coast Aquarium, which provides a great diversion on a rainy day. And shop-a-holics can prowl Newport’s historic Art Deco district. Even better, if you block out a few extra hours on the return trip, you can find your way back to the big city via McMinnville and Dundee. There you can sample Oregon’s vaunted Pinot noirs in the tasting rooms of Argyle, Sokol Blosser and Torii Mor wineries.

a surfboard, but you have to bring your own courage. Those who are brave enough to dunk themselves in a wave will find their nether regions have suddenly gone numb. It’s a sign that it’s time to retreat to the beach house for a big bowl of crab

Anyone who hasn’t experienced the delicate little Yaquina Bay oysters carefully pan-fried in Panko bread crumbs has missed out on one of life’s exotic treats.

As a child, my trips to the Oregon coast often included clam digging when the tides were low enough to permit it. Unfortunately, the indigenous razor clams were overhunted throughout much of the past four decades. Today, when you stop into a seafood shop on the Oregon Coast, you still can purchase fresh Pacific Northwest razor clams courtesy of Washington state’s Quinault Tribe, which has managed its own clamming beaches wisely.

Of course, one always could purchase a clamming license for $16.50 and pick up a shovel with a long narrow blade from the local hardware store. You’ll also need a tidal chart and a good measure of luck to locate the telltale donut in the wet sand that gives the clams away. Even when you locate one, you must dig like the hounds of heck to drag them from their hiding place.

If you are loathe to dig for your dinner, I understand. Instead, make a beeline for Local Ocean Seafoods on Newport’s historic waterfront, where the resident fishing fleet is parked across the street from this combined retail store and restaurant.

Wild caught salmon is a

rarity on the Oregon coast this summer, but the local fleet pulled in 15,000 pounds of black cod and rockfish the weekend we were there.

Local Ocean has a compact restaurant seating area and an excellent chef who turns out crab po’ boys, grilled fish wraps, a cleaned 2-pound Dungeness crab in the shell, grilled ling cod and chips and, of course, Yaquina Bay oysters with fennel slaw.

I guarantee you won’t be disappointed by Local Ocean, but if you want to drive a few miles, you can visit the oyster farm, buy yourself a quart of shucked oysters and a little tub of cocktail sauce, then sit down at a picnic table and pig out.

If you’re too stuffed to romp on the beach after lunch, visit the aquarium just across the bay bridge from downtown — admission is $14.95. There, you can pet a shark, play pantomime with a very frisky sea otter and admire aquariums full of regional fish. Colorful hand-blown glass by local artisans enhances many of the smaller aquariums. The sight of translucent jellyfish pulsing through kelp forests fashioned from hand-blown glass is unforgettable.

If it’s true that a change in latitude produces a change in attitude, a quick trip to the Oregon Coast will remind you that America’s diverse landscape is endlessly fascinating.

The inaugural Steamboat All Arts Festival is constantly evolving, with arts and culture organi-zations from the Yampa Valley coming on board to join national performers such as old-time-in-fluenced rock group The Avett Brothers and solo pianist George Winston.

Spearheaded by the Steamboat Springs Cham-ber Resort Association and affiliated with a long list of local arts organizations, the four-day event includes performances and input from music groups, dance companies, art galleries, theater presenters, writers’ organizations and more.

The festival starts with a free show from The Avett Brothers on Aug. 20 at the base of Steam-boat Ski Area. Winston anchors the performances Aug. 21 with a concert closing out the 2009 Strings Music Festival summer season. Home base Aug. 21, 22 and 23 will be a fine art walk between Fifth and Seventh streets on Yampa

Street. The Steamboat Art Museum will contribute a plein air painting event, and the Steamboat Springs Orchestra and Emerald City Opera com-pany are scheduled to perform.

Throughout the weekend, a tent at the base of the mountain will be the place for workshops in photography, writing, painting and more. A performance stage on Yampa Street hosts dance, music and theater shows Saturday.

It all comes together Aug. 23 with a late afternoon block party and cookout at the Depot Art Center. The Steamboat Springs Arts Council celebrates the 100th anniversary of its train depot home this year and will ring it in with an exhibi-tion of train history, live music and family fun.

Mainstreet Steamboat Springs is inviting women of all ages to town for a Sisters in Steamboat weekend Oct. 16 to 18. The weekend will include cocktails, yoga, nights on the town and a party, Mainstreet Manager Tracy Barnett said.“People really seem intrigued and are

inviting their sisters and their friends to come and have something to do,” she said.The event starts Oct. 16, a Friday, with

cocktails at Harwigs-L’Apogee. The women will have dinner on their own and then head for an evening at the new Ghost Ranch Saloon. The next day will include a continental breakfast, yoga and enrich-ment sessions, Barnett said. She wasn’t yet sure what those sessions would

feature, possibly journaling or financial advice.Barnett got the idea from St. Charles,

Ill. The sisters weekend in that town has grown from 50 to 500 people over four years. Participants must pay a registration fee and will get goodies with that. Barnett said in May that she was still firming up plans.“It’s a good time of year,” she said. “I

At Northwest Ballet Studio, dancers of all levels can take classes in jazz, ballet, belly, Irish, hoop and ballroom styles as part of a constantly evolving schedule that brings in teachers from across the county, and workshop leaders from across the coun-try. Regardless of the style, dance’s fitness benefits hold steady, said Wendy Smith Mikelsons, dance instructor and owner of Northwest Ballet.

“Each accomplishes it in different ways, because obviously when you go to a hip-hop class, it’s different from a ballet class, but it still works and develops all these things in the body,” Smith Mikelsons said.

Most classes at Northwest Ballet start with exercises for the abs and lower back, and stretches for the whole body. Chore-ography moves into combinations across the floor, all of which uses muscles in the lower torso. Dancers need a strong core for balance and technique, and for practical purposes, Smith Mikelsons said.

“Dance just naturally does that. You know if you let it go you’re going to fall off

balance,” she said.In the past few years, Smith Mikelsons

has seen a spike in interest for ballroom dance — a trend she partially attributes to pop culture phenomena such as “Dancing With the Stars” — and an expansion in the styles of dance Steamboat Springs has to of-fer. Along with the diverse roster at North-west Ballet, Colorado Mountain College’s Alpine Campus sponsors African dance classes at the Depot Art Center, and the Steamboat Dance Theatre holds open audi-tions each fall for an annual spring concert that touches on tap, modern, lyrical, swing and maybe a dozen more genres.

“When you think about it, all these styles of dance are different, but when you think about the fitness benefits ... all the styles will give you these things,” Smith Mikelsons said.

Relieve stress, increase athleticism

In the fitness realm, dancing is a fun, athletic way to get exercise, Smith Mikel-sons said.

“You’re getting exercise, but it’s not like getting on a treadmill. It’s enjoyable; it’s fun. It’s working your mind and your body, and then there’s also a stress relief

component,” she said.In addition to releasing endorphins,

dancing gives participants a focus outside of their day-to-day lives.

“It takes your stress away from what-ever your mind is stressing on, because you’re thinking about the steps and the dance,” Smith Mikelsons said. When the choreography starts, the day’s tension melts away, she said. Classes also allow dancers to add a personal touch to each step, indulging a creative element that just doesn’t come with a stationary bike.

“Everyone can learn dance or choreog-raphy, but when you watch dancers, you can see that many will have their own style or interpretation of the movement,” Smith Mikelsons said.

A full session of dance classes provides athletic benefits outside of traditional sports.

“I would think a lot of people don’t necessarily think of it as an athletic endeavor, but great dancers have to be athletic,” Smith Mikelsons said, pointing to the fitness level of any professional dancer.

“In my mind, it’s an athletic endeavor, but it has that artistic component and that creative expression component.”

■ Beginner’s hoop dance, July 1 through Sept. 16: This 12-week class is broken into two six-week sessions covering how to get comfortable dancing with a hoop and making graceful transitions from one move to the next.

Hey, anyone remember bota bags? I thought so.

It’s been a quarter century since it became seriously un-cool to wear one over your neck on the ski slopes. But the Spanish leather wine skins still sell briskly in Steamboat specialty stores. And the reason is pretty clear.

A mellow hike to a wildflower meadow and a picnic represent the safest first date in the mountains. Bring along a bota bag and you’ve got a chance to up the ante with flir-tatious fun. What could be more innocently sexy than squirting a dry rosé into a new friend’s mouth from oh, say 14 inches away?

Better make it a double date. My aim is true.

Picnics may be a good way to begin a tentative relationship, but they don’t have to be a cheap date. There is a good deal of nonverbal communication packed into the gourmet goodies you select for the basket or rucksack. Take the care to search out a really fine Spanish sheep cheese that was seem-ingly made to go with a citrus-y chardonnay and you’re scoring bonus points, baby.

Spend as freely as the budget allows or grab a few pricier items, and pair them with more budget-friendly items. Shop like a chef (great cheese and fruit matter most) and you can make a lasting impression.

Picnic hot spotsChoose your destination wisely. If you

know that your date doesn’t own hiking shoes, your choices are Rotary Park along the Yampa River, the Yampa River Botanic Park or the paved trail to the Fish Creek Falls overlook.

If you find out the object of your heart’s desire alternates spending noon hours between the Spring Creek Trail and push-ing the pace up Blackmer Drive to the Emerald Mountain Quarry, choose a serious day pack instead of a picnic basket — one that’s big enough for plastic wine glasses.

Good picnic destinations would be the top of Sand Mountain (you can stand in one spot and see downtown Steamboat and downtown Craig), or the ridge on the Rabbit Ears Range that looks into Medicine Bow Peak west of Laramie, Wyo.

On the other hand, if you find out the object of your heart’s desire was once an Outward Bound instructor, saddle up for the far side of the Devil’s Causeway or Red Dirt Pass, where the view takes in the sum-mit ridge of Mount Zirkel.

Picnic partners of all hiking abilities would be wowed by a stroll through the aspens along the switchbacks on Buffalo Pass — bring along a blanket from Routt County Woolens.

Should I bring wine?Are you kidding? That’s what the bota

bag is for! Besides, you’re going to have ample opportunity to walk it off before you return to the car. OK, to be polite, bring a small Nalgene with half lemonade and half iced tea. You could put it in a bota, but it wouldn’t be the same.

Randall Grahm. They have played a role in championing the predominant grapes of the Rhone Valley of France in Ameri-can rosés.

Grahm is behind the Vin Gris de Cigare from Bonny Doon Vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains ($15.99). Carlson produc-es the Curtis Heritage Rosé ($13.99) from Los Olivos outside Santa Barbara.

In both cases, expect a dry wine with strawberry, raspberry and cherry flavors.

Over at Vino, Mike Kirlan is touting the Rosé Domaine de Gournier ($13) produced between Avignon and Nimes in the Languedoc region. The Solo Rosa from California’s Russian River Valley ($17) pairs wonderfully with Vino’s Man-chego cheese made from sheep’s milk in northern Spain and the aromatic Oldani salamis, handmade in an Italian meat market in St. Louis, Mo.

Once you begin to look closely, you’ll be amazed at how many shops in Steam-boat stock gourmet picnic items, from fancy crackers to fancy olives, artisan cheeses and wild game sausages.


Don and Gail Eden, of Steamboat Springs, began to earnestly collect art when they retired here from Chicago. But the days are gone when they actively seek out galleries to uncover a new piece of art for their home in The Sanctuary.

“I’ll tell you that retirement can be ex-pensive when you have the time” to collect art, Gail said.

However, it’s neither time nor funds that are curtailing the Edens’ urge to collect art. They’ve just run out of space. At their home on a wooded lot where large mam-mals often wander, the three-dimensional pieces spill outdoors.

“We’re kind of getting to replacement

mode,” Don said.“If we’re going to buy something, it has

to be, ‘Oh, is that gorgeous! That has to go on that wall!’” Gail agreed.

Still, the Edens returned from a recent trip to Spain and Northern Africa with a small geode stuffed with amethyst crystals.

The Edens began collecting art when Gail spotted the colorful handmade glass pieces of noted artist Dale Chihuly in a gallery in Vail.

When they returned to their previous home in Chicago, they encountered a major showing of Chihuly’s larger works in the Garfield Conservatory. Gail and Don became admirers, but the artist’s work was

out of their price range.Sagely, they began collecting pieces by

Chihuly’s students. The first was a deep blue bowl that transmits the light in mysterious ways. Next, they purchased three large free-form glass bowls that now hang vertically over the French doors leading to the deck at their Steamboat home.

Don, who is handy, quickly realized that the couple’s growing collection of art glass needed custom lighting to be shown to its best effect. He built a stack of glass corner shelves in front of a deep red wall where the art appears to glow from within.

The Edens’ collection doesn’t stop at three-dimensional glass pieces. The best way to describe assemblage of art in their home would be “eclectic,” a term they readily embrace.

Consider Dolly, the palomino mare who sits perpetually on a barstool in front of their granite-topped kitchen bar, one shod hoof cradling a champagne flute.

She is human-sized and was made in 2003 of carefully painted fiberglass by sculp-tor Rose Reed Littrell, of Dickson, Tenn. Dolly is an expert at breaking the ice at cocktail parties.

The Edens are most proud of two sculp-tures by the artist “Tobey,” which reside just off the entry foyer of the home. The bronze sculptures, one of an eagle in flight and the second of a Native American figure, are etched with symbolic figures. Unchar-acteristic of most bronzes, they are brightly colored.

Not far from the Tobey works is another bronze by Steamboat artist Sandy Graves.

It is accompanied by a large oil painting by Steamboat artist Brenda Hanin. Her early winter scene of a humble agricultural shed reflects a fine eye for authentic detail.

Other local artists who have earned a

place in the Edens’ collection include wa-tercolorist Greg Effinger and photographer Judy Jones.

Effinger’s paintings, typically devoted to recognizable Yampa Valley scenes, include Fish Creek Falls and another of two figures on horseback with a familiar white barn in the background. Gail loves that it captures springtime on the lower Elk River.

“I went for a bike ride over the week-end and recognized the barbed wire fences under water,” she said. “I realized I was just biking through Greg’s picture.”

One of Jones’ images of a tightly cropped herd of horses also is placed in the foyer.

In the backyard of the Edens’ home, a collection of metal sculptures is dappled by sunlight pouring through aspen leaves. A mossy boulder the size of a Chevy Tahoe dominates the setting and stands as proof that God, acting through a glacier, is an artist himself.

The Edens’ art collection is enabled in part because they are very open to each other’s taste in painting and sculpture.

“We genuinely don’t agonize about a lot of stuff,” Don said.

When Gail spotted the cut steel wall pieces of Eagle Creek, Ore., artist Brent Lawrence, Don didn’t hesitate. She was drawn to a piece that shows the heads of three heavily antlered bull elk standing out in relief from a plate of steel.

“I love it, but where would you put it? Don asked.

“On the wall in the dining room,” she replied.

“Done! I like it!” Don answered.Driving down a country road in Tuscany,

they spied a man painting at an easel set up on the shoulder. Later, while visiting a gallery, they met the son of the painter, who turned out to be Italo Peteri. They mutually

agreed they had to have one of his clas-sic Tuscan landscapes with a field of bright poppies in the foreground and a villa in the background.

It occupies a favored spot right next to the Hummel figurine collection of Don’s late mother, Leah. It’s proudly displayed on a marble-topped hutch that was a gift from Leah Eden.

“That is our pride and joy,” Gail said. “It was a first anniversary present.”

Of course, her own mother’s collection of cut glass also claims a prominent spot on the home’s upper level.

The Edens say they must slow the pace of their collecting. But inevitably, their fa-vorite outdoor sculpture show in Loveland comes around again Aug. 7 to 9. It would be difficult to return to Steamboat empty-handed.

Rodeo season 2009 is upon us, and it’s remarkable to think many fans of the Steamboat Springs Pro Rodeo

Series aren’t acquainted with J.C. Trujillo. He’s only the most famous bronc rider this

cow town has ever known.

The easygoing Trujillo was nowhere to be found at this year’s Cowboys’ Roundup Rodeo at Howelsen Hill during the July 4 holiday. He was preoccupied managing a much bigger rodeo in his hometown of Prescott, Ariz.

Your best chance to catch up with the 1982 World Champion

bareback bronc rider might be to wander over Dunckley Pass in late September in hopes that he’s there at his ranch in Pyramid, on the headwaters of the Williams Fork. It’s the time of year when he should be getting ready to guide elk hunters.

Catch him around a campfire when the constellations are bright in the sky over the Flat Tops, and J.C. might just recite some of his own cowboy poetry for you.

“Yeah, I still do that once in a while if the mood is right and I have the right brew in my hand,” he said with a friendly drawl.

For most of the year, however, J.C. and his wife, Margo, are living the good life managing a ranch owned by the Yavapai Tribe in Skull Valley, just west of Prescott.

“I ride my saddle horse two or three times a week checking on our 50 cows,” J.C. said. “And I team rope a lot.”

J.C. also has a full-time gig as general manager of the world’s oldest paid performance rodeo. Prescott Frontier Days observed its 122nd anniversary June 29 to July 5. The parade and eight performances drew tens of thousands of spectators from all across the world. Prescott Frontier Days is popular among Europeans who are fans of the American West.

A couple of months after celebrating his 61st birthday, J.C. isn’t about to give in to the temptation of jamming a gloved fist into a bareback riggin’ and calling for the fellas to open the chute. Those days are in the

past. But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t feel a strong pull every time he gets around a rodeo.

“I’ll never get over it,” he admitted. “Sometimes when I’m at a rodeo, watching from my saddle horse, and I see a horse that looks like it would be nice to ride — one that you could score a lot of points on — I’ll catch myself rocking back and forth (in a spurring motion) in the saddle.

“When I first retired, I used to think about it all the time. That’s the way it is when you live it, eat it, think it the way you have to,” to become a world champion.

Trujillo grew up in Prescott where his father, Albert, competed in Frontier Days as early as 1936. J.C. got his start in a calf riding event at age 6. It wasn’t too many years later that his championship drive and ability revealed itself. He won the Arizona State High School Bareback Riding Title at age 17 and placed third in the National High School Finals. At Arizona State University in 1968, he won a national collegiate championship.

J.C. hit the pro rodeo circuit full time beginning in 1973 and had a career that outlasted most — he qualified for a dozen National Finals Rodeos — competing in as many as 130 rodeos a year. He finally retired at age 37 from a sport that dishes out at least as much punishment as NFL football.

In 1985, his final year on the circuit, he earned $57,000 in prize money, competed in the NFR and went out a winner.

One of J.C.’s biggest payouts came at the Calgary Stampede when he won a $50,000 bonus prize.

“That was a ton of money back then!” he recalled.

He used the jackpot to buy his 50-acre retreat in Pyramid, just across the Routt County line in Rio Blanco County.

residents, J.C.’s path to the Yampa Valley was spontaneous. He was competing in the Denver Western Stock Show one January — make it 1975 — when famous rodeo cowboy Larry Mahan of Salem, Ore., invited him to a ski party in Steamboat. The party turned out to be the second-ever Cowboy Downhill (yes, it was a wild party) that Mahan and Olympic skier Billy Kidd put together.

“I fell in love with skiing, and I fell in love with Steamboat,” Trujillo said.

The up-and-coming bareback rider made Steamboat Springs his home base and lived with another Olympic skier, Moose Barrows, for several years.

After he and Margo were married, they settled into a condo at Meadowlark. During those years, J.C. and another pro rodeo cowboy often flew in the other cowboy’s Cessna to cover as many performances and buck out as many horses as they could.

Those were days of constant travel and excitement. J.C. vividly recalls the sensation of winning the world championship.

“That was a great, great thrill in my life,” he said. “Rodeo is a unique sport — not only do you have to have the skills, but you also have to have the right draw (of a bucking horse in the championship round). I was one of the fortunate ones who had the determination to realize my lifetime goal.”

Just as Steamboat is fortunate any time that J.C. and Margo find their way back to the Yampa Valley.
