Arthur’s Purpose
Native AmericanLong ago, Native American children had just as
much fun playing as children do today. They didn’t buy toys at stores. Instead, they made toys from things found in nature.
Children who lived near forests formed dolls out of materials from trees. Some used pine needles to make dolls with pine “skirts.” They made their dolls dance on a thin piece of wood.
Hopi children who lived in what is now Arizona played a board game on a flat stone. They tried to capture each other’s animals by jumping over the pieces. It sounds a lot like checkers!
