awareness. Each session will help you learn

how to build better relationships and discover a

deeper spiritual life.

Identity

Franciscan Spirituality Center is a sacred place that welcomes everyone. We are rooted in the Gospels and sponsored by the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration.

Mission

The Franciscan Spirituality Center is dedicated to supporting anyone in their search for God, meaning and wholeness.

We live this mission because we believe:

• In each of us lives the Sacred.

• We need each other to recognize and honor that part of ourselves.

• Responding to spiritual hunger is necessary for growth, healing and peace.

• As we grow in wholeness, we contribute to the healing of all creation.

Core Values

In keeping with the tradition of our Franciscan founders, we hold these core values:

Sacredness: Believe that in every person and all creation lives the Sacred.

Respect: Acknowledge the dignity, diversity and worth of each person as a unique image of God.

Community: Through prayer, empathy and sharing, create a safe, peaceful place.

Hospitality: Welcome all with compassion, acceptance and celebration.

Professionalism: Commit to competence, quality, trust and personal spiritual development.

What We Do

The Franciscan Spirituality Center guides and directs processes for prayer and offers personal presence to anyone on their sacred journey as co-creators of a just and peaceful world. The Center offers individual and group spiritual direction, guided and preached retreats, day-long programs and events. Staff is available for off-site workshops, presentations and programs.

One of the first lessons I learned in the graduate community health education program at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse is that the definition of wellness was not what I thought.

To be healthy or well includes other factors besides the state of our physical health. The quality of our relationships, our sense of purpose and meaning, and our spirit are equally important and need attention if we are to be well. The movement to a more holistic healthcare model in recent years recognizes this important fact.

The Franciscan Spirituality Center isn’t in the business of giving flu shots or performing surgery, yet we do actively work to promote wellness in body, mind and spirit. For example, a 12-step group for those living with depression has met weekly for years at the FSC. Yoga and other gentle exercise classes promote good breathing, flexibility and stress reduction.

Our trained spiritual directors compassionately support you without judgment and with careful listening while you come to an understanding of your life experiences. In a noisy and hectic world, during the change of the seasons, the Franciscan Day of Solitude provides a peaceful time for you to experience silence, rest, prayer and reflection.

Our Enneagram workshops promote healthy relationships at home and work through deeper self-awareness and understanding of personality types. We work to support personal relationships with monthly gatherings for parents and an annual celebration of marriage around Valentine’s Day.

Perhaps you’ve thought of the Center as being like a neighborhood church. It is true that our motivation comes from the Gospel. Like our Franciscan founders, we want to help bring about that abundant life promised by Christ here on earth to every human being. There is no religious requirement or expectation for coming to this wellness center, though. All are welcome with recognition of the sacred in all of us.

If you haven’t been to the Center for a while, we hope you will make us part of your New Year’s plan. And, write a prescription for the spiritual health of a friend by bringing them with you to a program or retreat!

In September the director of the FSC, Jeff Dols, resigned. Jeff incorporated both a deep Franciscan spirituality and impressive business skills in his leadership of the FSC. We are grateful to him for his dedication and accomplishments, among them a strategic plan to guide the Board and staff. Jeff recruited me to join the staff of the FSC almost two years ago, and I am honored to follow him as the new director.

Peace and all good,

What is a retreat?Retreat is a gift to yourself — a way to step aside from everyday concerns to relax and care for your soul. We provide time for rest, reflection, prayer and discussion. Your retreat can be as structured or as unstructured as you like. It is your time to rest and pray in silence, or reconnect and deepen your relationship with God, or be inspired by a dynamic speaker.

What is unique about a retreat at the Franciscan Spirituality Center?Core to our Franciscan values, we offer a peaceful and serene retreat experience that is welcoming and warm. We offer a rich history of prayer and offer the opportunity to pray before the Blessed Sacrament in the Adoration Chapel at St. Mary of Angels Chapel.

Who goes on a retreat or who can benefit from a retreat? Many people of all ages and walks of life consider FSC their spiritual home. Some are searching for God; others are simply trying to find a greater sense of peace in their lives. Some come from traditional religious backgrounds; others consider themselves ‘spiritual but not religious.’ You don’t have to have a strong religious background to feel at home at FSC. What you do need is a thirst for a more peaceful life of compassion and love or a desire to renew your ability to hear God. You will return to your normal routine a bit more rested and centered. Taking time positively affects those around you.

Preached Retreats: A retreat director gives a retreat centered on a topic and weaves prayer into the presentation. Usually the participant listens and reflects on materials during free time.

Guided Retreats: A retreat director presents information on a specific topic, interweaves prayer and participant discussion with others in the retreat.

• $50/night• $48/night (6 nights or more)

Please call 608-791-5295 or email [email protected] for availability or additional information regarding bedroom, meals, hermitage or meeting room space.

Directed Retreat at a Hermitage:(spiritual director comes to you to meet)

• $95/night (5 nights or less)• $90/night (6 nights or more)

Private and Group Directed Retreats: An individual or group contacts the FSC and requests accommodations at a Hermitage or the FSC for an experience that fits into their life and the Spiritual Director’s schedule.

This year the FSC is offering the following guided and preached retreat themes for you to consider: Holy Days and Holidays; Contemplative and Silent; Music and the Beauty of Art; Body and Movement; Earth and Nature; Everyday Franciscan Spirituality.

What do you do on retreat? Each retreat experience at the Franciscan Spirituality Center is uniquely different, depending upon the type or theme of the retreat. Typically, each retreat experience follows the flow of the retreat director and includes time for prayer, reflection and solitude.

Why make a retreat?Rediscover what it means to just be. Our lives are so full of responsibilities, worries, and noise that we often ignore the call from within. Our concerns with families, jobs, health, finances, and personal relationships may override our commitment to spiritual growth, even when we need it most. A retreat helps one regain balance and develop the necessary spiritual tools to access the presence of God in the midst of daily life. What about the accommodations?Centrally located, the Franciscan Spirituality Center is rich in beauty and simplicity, and warm in spirit and hospitality. Our dedicated housekeeping and hospitality staff help our guests feel at home and at peace. We offer private bedrooms with a desk, comfortable chair and optional private baths (if available). Our meeting rooms and rest rooms are mostly handicapped accessible. Our staff will provide assistance to anyone with special needs.

Come and stay with us

Retreat Options

What do you think of when you hear that someone is “going on a retreat?” Do you have flashbacks from when you were a child growing up and a retreat meant sleeping in tents and eating food

cooked over an open fire? Take a minute to explore here what a retreat can now mean for you. And how important a retreat experience is to revive the peaceful flow in the river of life.

Intuition and Intention in Decision-Making

Learn how to balance intellect and emotion, reclaim your senses and use them for effective decision-making. In this workshop we will examine the “gut instinct” and

develop a personal process for trusting intuitive knowledge. Kristy Walz is a business coach and speaker, and assists businesses with marketing and strategic planning as CEO of Confluence Consulting. She appreciates elements of many spiritual traditions and incorporates a holistic approach to her work. Kristy’s background includes a degree in metaphysics and she describes her relationship with God as one of awe and wonder and mystery. She is currently enrolled in the FSC’s Spiritual Direction Preparation Program.

The Sound of Bowls: An evening of calm and clarity with Tibetan singing bowls

Traditional historic singing bowls produce sounds that invoke deep states of relaxation, naturally assisting one in entering expanded states of consciousness and meditation. The

sound of the bowls creates a deep level of communication with our inner world that opens us to the Divine. Enjoy an evening of captivating renewal in the presence of ageless bell sounds. You are invited to wear comfortable clothes and bring your own pillow to sit on the floor.

Tom Roberts has over 35 years of experience in psychotherapy and his own personal Zen Buddhist practice. He is the author of The Mindfulness Workbook: A Beginners Guide to Overcoming Fear and Embracing Compassion. His practice specializes in mind-body healing.

Richard Rohr Webinar: How Jesus Interpreted Scripture

Join seekers from around the world as Fr. Richard Rohr re-teaches themes from the Christian tradition. Find sacred companionship in this community of ancient and fresh faith. He will

offer fresh ways of understanding the teachings of Jesus, St. Paul, and St. Francis.

Our first topic will be How Jesus Interpreted Scripture. What is the core message of Scripture and what does it tell us about God’s character? According to Fr. Rohr, Jesus shows us a biblical text tending toward inclusivity, mercy and justice. He reveals a benevolent God. The morning includes time for conversation.

Fostering Creativity

Our creative impulses are blessings and we have a sacred obligation to engage them. More than just a springboard for artistic endeavors, the creative impulse inspires divergent

thinking, resulting in new ways to approach our work, our relationships and so much more.

In this session, we will explore ways to foster our innate creativity. This can also benefit the people with whom we live. In the past two decades, creativity scores have dropped significantly for children in grades K-6. Children benefit when the adults in their lives value their own creativity—in “seeing” what is, and imagining what could be.

Jerilyn Dinsmoor is a spiritual director and artist who researched the intersection of creativity and spirituality as part of her master’s degree. She infuses humor, hands-on activities and personal stories as she shares her research findings.

Franciscan Day of Solitude

Francis of Assisi frequently spent time in solitude and prayer in order to sustain his active spiritual life. He encouraged his followers to do the same and gifted others with days of

solitude by ministering to them. On your day of solitude, enjoy Franciscan hospitality in the peaceful environment of the FSC to rest and pray as you wish.

Brush Wisdom: Messages from the Contemplative Heart

Japanese Zen brush painting is a creative representation of the spiritual experience. Explore the inter-play of mind, body and

spirit through the expressive use of the brush stroke in an atmosphere of contemplative calm and peace. Experience a deep sense of inner harmony as we express the message of our hearts into black and white space. To enhance the power of the brush stroke, this program will utilize Qi Gong, breathing and Haiku. No artistic experience is necessary.

Annual Celebration of Married Life: Love is Still Calling

For the FSC’s 8th annual marriage celebration, Mike and Sue Blair will entertain us with stories, songs and reflections about the blessings and challenges of marriage, love and

abiding friendship. Their music and stories will invite you to reflect on the laughter, tears, hopes and joys that renew our relationships and the gifts of grace that deepen our capacity for faithful love. Register early, as this popular event fills early and is limited to the first 18 couples—it makes a great gift! Please bring your wedding photo to share.

Sue holds a degree in music theater and has taught first grade for 16 years. A graduate of Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago, Mike has served as a campus pastor at Luther College since 1991. Married in 1980, they are the parents of Kate and Ben.

Forming Family: Blending Our Differences

The term “blended families” usually brings to mind families formed through remarriage after divorce or the death of a spouse. Yet in every situation where two adults come

together to create a family, differences must be negotiated in order to function well. We differ because of our family of origin, our priorities and values, our religious preferences and more.

Join Tom Roberts in a lively discussion on the differences we bring to our adult relationships, and how to respect and blend those differences for a peaceful home.

The Courage to Be Enough

We live in a world that bombards us with messages that we are not enough and that we do not have enough. These messages and our own inner critic limit us and keep us

from finding joy.

Join Kristy Walz and Steve Spilde for an interactive exploration in how to move past soul-stifling obstacles of shame, self-doubt and the fear of vulnerability. Discover how to embrace imperfection, welcome worthiness and invite joy into your life.

Relationships can be graced experiences or frustrating challenges. Whether personal or work-related, the characteristics of our relationships affect the quality of our lives. We can be confused by another’s behavior and can surprise another by our choices. While a person can relate well with another operating on the same level, we may not understand why there is discord or misunderstanding with a spouse, friend or co-worker. Discover the biases and fears of each type and the skills needed to understand and find common ground.

In exploring our personality characteristics we gain a greater awareness of our motivations, behaviors and understanding of others. While this brings peace and harmony to our daily lives, we just have part of the journey. As we set aside our ego distortions, we allow space for a deepening awareness of our true nature and the experience of the Divine essence. This workshop focuses on the spiritual gifts of each type, using exercises, meditations and practices to open you to the transformative spirit of God..

Presenters: Rosalie Hooper Thomas, FSPA Affiliate is a spiritual director, workshop presenter and facilitator. With the insights from the Enneagram, she helps people discover their own truths and develop skills to participate in a creative community. Rosalie received her certification through Dr. Jerome Wagner at Loyola University and continues to study multiple teachers for a broad perspective on the gifts of the Enneagram.

From the Hebrew Scriptures through the earliest days of Christianity, women stepped forward to lead because of their faith. Life is a succession of open and shut doors. In order to move forward, we often face the choice of whether to open a closed door and step over the threshold into

unknown territory.

“My usual response is not to run toward this newness, but instead, to be afraid,” says Paula D’Arcy. Our fear may keep us from encountering the hidden God.

A former psychotherapist, Paula survived the loss of her husband and young daughter in an accident in 1975. She was three months pregnant at the time. Today she is a writer, retreat leader and international speaker, and the president of the Red Bird Foundation. The Foundation supports the growth and spiritual development of those in need throughout the world, including men and women in prison.

Annual Conference

May 2-3, 201429th

with keynote speakerPaula D’Arcy

1. LIVE life at high speed. No exceptions. Run hard.

2. STAY scattered and distracted. The more clutter and activity, the better.

3. TAKE everything personally. Never evaluate. Agree.

4. USE blame liberally. It’s so invigorating. I wasn’t responsible, you were. Everything’s your fault.

5. DON’T laugh, especially at yourself.

6. STAY tied to your past. Elevate it to greatness. Live remembering and longing. Or missing. Why do it halfway? Go for it.

7. USE the word ‘because.’ ‘I can’t change, because.’ Because is so little appreciated as a solvent for responsibility. Try using because. This will work.

8. NEVER question or think for yourself. Just keep moving and accepting. (Refer to #1 and #3.)

9. CONTINUE to think of God as invisible and distant. Surely not present in this room. At this moment. Not while I’m reading a book.

10. REINFORCE the belief that your life is going to happen soon. This is not it, not yet. But one day. Maybe when I finish reading. from: Sacred Threshold: Crossing the Inner Barrier to a Deeper Love

Sometimes you just need someone to listen as you work through the complexities of life. The process of sharing your story and opening up to the conversations in your heart with a trusted confidante, or a spiritual director, offers a deeper self-awareness and understanding of your relationship with others, including God.

Schedule your first one-hour appointment with a spiritual director by calling the FSC at 608-791-5295. Scholarships are available for your first visit.

Our Spiritual Directors

What is Spiritual Direction?Spiritual direction is the powerful gift of compassionate listening. We have four trained and experienced spiritual directors on staff to meet with you whenever you are ready. When you feel the need or desire to share your sacred stories with someone who will listen intently and patiently to your words and feelings, without judgment and with love, we are here. Spiritual directors won’t give you solutions, advice or answers, but rather invite you to go deeper into your life story. This compassionate listening can provide immeasurable healing and spiritual growth. We are here for you.

W hen thinking about becoming a spiritual director, it is normal to have

a lot of questions about how you should respond. Becoming a spiritual

director is a huge decision. Being present to others while they share their soul is a

sacred offering that is filled with great responsibility.

For many, enrolling in a spiritual direction program is a path to deepen your

spirituality and prayer life. For others, it is because of a desire to be present

to those searching for meaning in their life or a way to develop skills in

compassionate listening. Spiritual directors don’t give people solutions or the

answers to their most sacred questions, but they will invite them to go deeper to

reflect how God is present in their life. What a gift!

to pray for her good health as she moves forward on her journey.

After 12 years of dedicated service to the FSC, Jenny Walter resigned this month from her role as office manager to embark on new adventures with her husband, Tom. Jenny’s outward spirit and positive energy will be deeply missed, but we

Last year there were over 100 children in the La Crosse School District with no permanent address. The few lucky ones are given a small space in a crowded homeless shelter, which often provides a small sleeping area and a warm meal. Rarely are those who are homeless given the basic hygiene supplies necessary to maintain their health and confidence. Access to basic personal supplies can give a greater sense of self and a brighter outlook on life.

The Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration, and their Affiliates, are asking for your help in responding to the needs of local individuals and families who are homeless and in need of basic personal care items. With the right supplies, we can help them avoid physical and dental health problems. Perhaps even more importantly, together we can help them retain their dignity during a trying time in their lives.

Items in need are:Baby wipes, talcum powder, diaper rash ointment, diapers (all sizes), baby shampoo, comb/brushes, deodorant, razors, shaving cream, bar soap or body wash, Kleenex, shampoo/conditioner, feminine products, manicure sets, raincoats/ponchos, socks, towels and washcloths, and diaper bags.
