HoCkEy Club The 2019 Winter Season of Field Hockey has come to an end, but what a fantastic season it was. This year the Penrith RSL Hockey Club had a total of five teams, an under 8s, under 11s, two adult female teams in 1st and 2nd division, and one adult male 1st division team.
2019 was all about change for these teams, we saw our old outdated uniforms change to a stunning modern design, thanks to Chris from A for Art. The new shirts shows the commitment, and faith that Penrith RSL has in our local sport clubs. Every player within the teams were ecstatic about the new shirts, even our competitors loved them. And with the bright vibrant colours, everyone in the Nepean Hockey association knows when the teams at Penrith RSL are playing.
The under 8s, they played amazing all season round, and under the guidance of Coach Gav, we saw them improve every game with their core skills, these skills being running with the ball, stopping the ball, and passing the ball. With each of these core ball skills, the kids need to use their stick as the main, and only point of contact. And finally, the most important core skill of all, teamwork. Each game we saw the kids work as a unit to score a number of goals, while the under 8s is a non-competitive age group, it was still fantastic for the kids to achieve this, and by the end of the season they were a strong team.
Our under 11s is also a non-competitive comp which starts to incorporate actual field positions, rules, and a fully kitted goalie. This year we saw 14 year old Reece, step up to coach the under 11s, and being a Rep player himself, and with the support of Coach Bill he was able to develop a very strong under 11s side. The fantastic benefits of this age group, is that the kids can try each position, giving them a taste of what they like before entering the competitive rounds in the under 13s competition. During their training Coach Reece, and Coach Bill honed the kid’s balls skills, turning them into a very strong team for 2019, and definitely the squad to watch out for.
The adult teams, played hard and fair this season, making us known as the club that never gives up, and strikes hard. This year our 1st division female team, made it all the way to the finals, before getting knocked out of the competition just before the grand finals, but we are still super proud of our ladies. Our 1st Division Male, and 2nd Division Female teams, didn’t make the finals this year, but they gave it a red hot crack, we look forward to see what they can do next season.
We are excited for the 2020 winter season, and we plan to field more teams. But for now, we are gearing up for our summer, and indoor competitions for 2019.
DaRTS ClubThe Dart Club has had an extremely successful 2019.
The club has increased its membership and has managed to enter three teams in both the Summer and Winter Thursday night competitions of the Lower Blue Mountains Dart Association.
In the Summer competition, all three teams managed to make the finals with the Division 1 team of Anthony, Alex, Dan, Don, Huss and Peter taking out the minor premiership for the first time by one point. unfortunately, our Division 2 team of Troy, Gavin, Thomas, Eric and Bailey and our Division 3 team of Marty, Graham, Ann, Steve, Ron and David both missed out on making their Grand Finals despite playing some excellent darts in the semis. Congratulations to both teams on their efforts throughout the competition.
The Division 1 team, however, went on to score decisive 5-2 and 5-1 victories over Bligh Park Tavern in their major semi and Grand Final to take out the Championship and be the number 1 ranked team in the Lower Blue Mountains competition. Their performance was outstanding as they didn’t give their opponents a chance in either game. Well done, guys!
In the current Winter competition, the Division 1 team has continued its strong form and is in first place with a 14-point lead heading into the finals. The Dart Club has two teams entered in the Division 3 competition with our No 1 team of club stalwarts holding down 4th place and our new comers doing their best to challenge for a finals place. As well, we welcome Henry into our Division 1 team and Jason into our Division 3 team in the Dart Club.
Highlights of the last two competitions also include Anthony’s ten 180’s during the Division 1 competition which was more than double the next best from any team and Ann and David teaming to win the LBMDA Division 3 Championship Doubles in the mid-year period. Congratulations!
Finally, the Dart Club members would like to thank the RSL management for its ongoing support of our Dart Club and in particular, for providing an additional competition board in the new dart-room which has eased the pressure of competing when two of our three teams are playing at home. Your support is much appreciated.
We look forward to a strong finish in the current competition and an even bigger and better year in 2020.

NEPEaN vallEy RSl Day ClubDay Club celebrated another birthday, our sixth, on the 30th August. Our birthday cake was donated by one of members, and was cut by founding member 100 year old, Jean Poole, Lil Baldwin who was celebrating her 99 year birthday and founding volunteer Diane Larsen. We were entertained by magician Lindsay Gardiner who had us all mystified by his tricks.
We have different themes each week. We have visited Scotland, Tasmania, China and Sydney, in the Convict Days. We started the year with an Aussie Safari, caught up with all types of Animals of the World and held a World of Dogs Day. We celebrated Chinese New Year, Pancake Day, Mother’s Day, Easter, and Father’s Day. Golden Rule Days, Reminiscing Childhood Memories, which members loved taking about, Letters, Maths, Words, Book Week and of course Movie Days. We went up the Garden Path and also had a Comedy Day, these are just a few.
Speakers who visited were from Penrith Historical Society, Anglicare, Nepean Therapy Dogs, all the dogs were a hit, it was great to see Members and Volunteers enjoy a pat and cuddle the dogs. The Blue Mountains ukulele Group also came long to entertain us.
Outings are popular with members and volunteers, in February we had an outing to the Hydro – Majestic at Medlow Bath for morning tea, then drove to Govett’s Leap to see our beautiful Blue Mountains and finished off the trip with lunch at the Ivanhoe Pub in in Blackheath. September we visited a house in Windsor Downs to see a collection of musical organs. After a lovely morning tea and listening to beautiful music we moved on to the Clarendon Hotel for a great lunch.
Over the next few months we will have many more themes including, Music, Sports, Grandparents Day, Comics, Cartoons and Super Hero’s, Country Day with a speaker from the CWA as well as a Campfire Sing a Long. We will be finishing the year with our Christmas Party and an outing to Penrith RSL for Morning Melodies.
If you are a veteran, a war widow or an older member of the community and like meeting new people and having fun, come along Day Club and see what we are about. If you like what you see and meet our membership criteria, this is the place to be. We meet every Friday at the Penrith Senior Centre in Station Street from 10am to 2.00pm. A small contribution is required, this covers morning tea, lunch and activity costs. Our program covers things like gentle exercises, mind alive activities (keeps the brain active) as well as leisure activities (games) and much more.
We are looking for a volunteer bus driver to help pick up and drop off members when our regular driver is away. If you or if you know of anyone please contact me.

DaNCE ClubHello Dancers at the Penrith RSL Club. I would like to inform everybody that due to lots of sickness, operations and holidays of some of our members we had to close our dancing activities for a short time, but with new gusto and spirit we have restarted our dance on Sunday the 13th October at 7pm up in the Hornseywood Hall.
Our dancing consists of New Vogue and English Sequence dancing. It is very good exercise and also good for the brain. We dance every Sunday, mainly starting at 7pm until 9.30pm. Sometimes we start earlier to have revisions of dances that are on our programme.
We also hold 4 Dinner Dances each year, which is always a good social event.
We are always looking for new dance enthusiasts that are interested in our type of dancing so if this activity is for you come and look us up in the Hornseywood Hall or give us a call on the numbers below.
Knowledge of basic dance steps for the modern waltz and quickstep is an advantage. Looking forward to hearing from you.

SWiMMiNG Club Penrith RSL Swimming Club commenced our summer season on Wednesday 9th October at Ripples Penrith. Our Club is family friendly and caters for swimmers of all ability.
We have swimmers as young as 3yrs through to mums and dads competing every week. Swimmers who are not confident in the water can have an assistant in the water with them. Come along and join in the fun, we want to see every child confident and safe in the water.
In March this year eleven of our Club swimmers were selected to compete at the RSL State Championships which were held in Muswellbrook. These eleven swimmers joined swimmers from Rooty Hill, Riverstone, Seven Hills/Toongabbie and Castle Hill, who form our Zone 4. Our Zone competed against swimmers from Dubbo, Newcastle, Central Coast and Sydney Metropolitan area which includes swimmers from Botany, Penshurst, Fairfield, Liverpool, Hornsby and surrounding areas.
Every swimmer from Penrith RSL Swimming Club came home with at least one medal, they also swam personal best times throughout the Championships. These swimmers represented Penrith RSL Swimming Club, Penrith RSL Club Ltd. and their families to the highest standard, cheering and encouraging fellow team members throughout the day.
The swimmers accrue points every time they place either 1st, 2nd or 3rd and by the lunch break we were leading the point score. The team managers knew we needed to continue our success in the afternoon session when the relays were being swum. unfortunately, we didn’t have entries in every age group for all relays but we didn’t need to worry, our swimmers excelled again in the relays, collecting more medals and valuable points.
At the conclusion of the Championships we were named Champions taking out the Championships by a massive 41 points. As a result of the swimmers performances our Zone won every Perpetual Trophy that was on offer. This has never been achieved in the 58 years of the Championships.
To say we are proud of these swimmers would be an understatement, this is the second year in a row we have won the Championships, we are looking forward to defending our crown again in March 2020 where the Championships will be held in our own pool at Penrith.

PHoToGRaPHy Club 2019 has proven to be another great year for the Photographic Club and we will be celebrating our 25th anniversary in 2020. Membership to July was fifty six and growing. We are also a very active, supportive and friendly club, meeting at the RSL in the evening twice a month, with show & tell, guest speakers, tutorials and print competitions suitable for both beginners and advanced photographers. We have had guest speakers presenting workshops on New Technologies and the Future of Photography, Travel Photography, using Textures in Photographs, Wedding Photography and How to Edit Award Winning Photos.
Other activities involve twelve outings/field trips per year, two of which involve an overnight stay. So far this year we have had a trip to Sydney for Nightlife Photography, travelled to Mt Wilson and Mt Irvine to photograph the colours of autumn, and been Glamping on Cockatoo Island for both Sunrise and Sunset Photography and a trip into the Megalong Valley for Landscape Photography. The club has also been to the Chinese Friendship Gardens at Darling Harbour for Nature and Street Photography and we travelled to Portland for a tour of the old cement works and to photograph the old buildings and machinery.
The club also organises an annual exhibition of member’s work in the Penrith City Library. Members are also encouraged to enter external competitions and perform very well in both the Penrith and Luddenham Shows.
In addition to the supportive role for members, the club also provides photographic assistance to RSL Sub Branch for ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day activities. This year the Photographic Club has offered support to the fellow intra clubs, and provided photographers for the finals of Penrith RSL Soccer Club events.
Two initiatives under consideration for 2020 is having a digital show & tell evening and the inclusion of mobile phone photography.

TRavEl Club 2019 has again been a successful year for the Travel Club. Our membership has grown to over 100 and our trips have been well patronised. Members attended 12 monthly outings and a 6-day tour to the Snowy. Our day cruises, Mystery Tour and Christmas in July were the most popular. All our trips included morning tea and lunch. Our members are well looked after and dietary needs are catered for. Christmas in July was at Burning Log, Richmond, with 2 coaches needed.
A delicious Christmas lunch and entertainment kept our members happy. Our Seven Island Cruise from Brooklyn and Gosford Cruise were booked out. Our tours take us to venues around Sydney and as far out as Newcastle, Maitland, Lithgow, Wollongong & Nowra. We visited the Sisters of Mercy, Maitland, where this order originated in Australia. Cockatoo Island and Fort Scratchley were of historical interest and we had train and bus enthusiasts on our trip to Sydney Bus Museum and NSW Train Museum at Thirlmere. We try to provide trips of varying interests. Some members have been to these places before but still keep coming.
The Travel Club provides an opportunity for members to socialise, to travel in comfort to interesting places and enjoy lunch at different clubs and restaurants. In 2020 The Travel Club will be celebrating 40 years of travelling. We still have members from the early days coming on trips. Times have changed. From travelling by public transport, then by car to different venues, our members now travel in comfort on coaches provided by Compass Tours. 2020 will again be a great year. Interesting places to visit, great food and best of all, great company!

FiSHiNG ClubThe club meets are on the first Wednesday of each month at Penrith RSL. New members are most welcome to join. Membership fee is only $10.
We have two scheduled charter monthly trips out of Wollongong Harbour, on the Krista, skippered by Grats. The first trip: on the second Saturday of each month. The second trip: on the fourth Sunday of each month.
It’s a great day out to be on the charter boat, in a relaxing atmosphere, catching a few fish and enjoying each other’s company.
We have a weekly meat raffle at Penrith RSL to raise funds. So that we can have club functions, organise annual BBQ, presentation nights, and point scoring competitions and most importantly go fishing.
If you love catching fish such as: Snapper, Flathead, Pigfish, Morwong, and Leather Jacket. Don’t hesitate, come join our Fishing club, and have some fun, catch fish & enjoy eating your catch.

PENRiTH RSl auxiliaRy The members of Penrith RSL Auxiliary are so thankful to be back and doing what they do best “FuNDRAISING”. We would like to thank everyone who has supported us over this difficult period.
Our members have already held a successful Father’s Day Raffle.
September was the 75th anniversary of our Auxiliary where members and guests had a fabulous time celebrating at a luncheon, singing and dancing well into the afternoon with the entertainment. It was wonderful to see so many people enjoying themselves.
Keep a lookout for us at the club as Remembrance Day is upon us with our poppies and then the Christmas Raffle. Next year we will be back in force, so always keep watch for any Raffles, Anzac Badges, Poppies, functions or outings we hold.

WoMEN vETERaNS NETWoRk auSTRaliaThe Women Veterans Network Australia (WVNA) is a relatively new entity in the Ex Service Organisation (ESO) space, but it has seen rapid growth since first establishing a social media presence in July 2016. Women Veterans Network Australia is a network helping current and ex-service women to connect with each other to share information and access services. With over 20 Regional Groups located across the Nation, WVNA is the only organisation in Australia that is solely focused on the well-being, and unique transitional and health needs of female veterans.
WVNA is slightly different from a number of other ESOs in that it does not provide any direct services such as welfare or advocacy. It is however, a network that shares information and can assist women veterans to locate a support service in their area. As a network it has a number of smaller groups such as well-being groups that members can utilise as required. Western Sydney is one of those - meeting regularly at the Penrith RSL Club.
The majority of WVNA members enjoy the social comradery and support in a peer support environment. There has been great support for WVNA from many RSL Clubs and sub-Branches, with many of its members also being active members in the RSL. Del Gaudry, who is still a reservist with the RAAF is the Regional Coordinator for the Western Sydney WVNA group. The group mostly meets on the last Sunday of the month at 2pm.
“I would like to thank the Board, Neel and his team for the ongoing support of WVNA.” Del Gaudry

Some of you might not be aware that there is a difference between the City of Penrith RSL sub-Branch (a branch of RSL NSW) and Penrith RSL Club Ltd, even though we are situated in the same building. Some years ago the sub-Branch sold the premises to the Club Ltd and a Deed of Accommodation Services was established, which basically means that the sub-Branch runs its own agenda from the Club premises and the Club Ltd runs its business as normal. The sub-Branch’s charter is basically to respect, support and remember our current and ex-service personnel and their families. Whereas the Club Ltd is here to provide leisure and entertainment for the whole family.
If you think you fall within the sub-Branch category and wish to join us, or even make a simple inquiry, then you are welcome to contact us.
The sub-Branch is on Facebook and we have recently opened our new website. Our new website is fresh, modern and easy to navigate. You can obtain information about us, membership eligibility, news and events, welfare and a gallery of our commemorative services. There is also a contact us page so members and the community can contact us. We also provide Justice of the Peace services from Monday to Thursday 9.30-2.30pm.
Sub-Branch meetings are generally held on the 3rd Wednesday of each month commencing at 6:00pm and then afterwards for a meal and drinks which gives the members the opportunity to enjoy each other’s comradery.
REMEMbRaNCE DayMonday, the 11th November 2019, is Remembrance Day and we will be conducting a commemorative service in Memory Park Woodriff Street, Penrith, commencing at 10:40am. Remembrance Day was first observed in 1919 throughout the British Commonwealth. It was originally called “Armistice Day” to commemorate armistice agreement that ended the First World War on Monday, November 11, 1918, at 11 a.m.—on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. So please join us to commemorate this memorable service.
kokoDa youTH lEaDERSHiP CHallENGEThe sub-Branch is in partnership with Penrith RSL Club and interviewed a number of applicants who applied for the 2019 Kokoda Youth Leadership Challenge. Successful applicants, Rebekah Keehan and Mitchell Waugh departed Sydney for Port Moresby on 28th September 2019 and returned to Sydney on 9th October 2019.
“The leadership program aims to create a greater awareness of the sacrifices of the diggers on the Kokoda campaign among our young people to ensure the traditions live on. At the same time it instils in participants a commitment to community service, enhance their personal development by providing an opportunity for them to experience the same conditions under which our diggers fought and hopefully transform them for future leadership roles back in the community.” Congratulations to our two recipients.
