  • ATELIER VAN LIESHOUTTHE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY

  • ATELIER VAN LIESHOUT | EMBRACE Embrace is an organically shaped sculpture, that doubles as a lamp. The work shows three figures embracing, enveloping, merging and becoming one form. A tribal totem for worship that is also an element of van Lieshout’s New Tribal Labyrinth series.

  • ATELIER VAN LIESHOUT | VENUS LAMP SMALL “Fertility. The first sculptures ever were of fertility sculptures. This one has three legs so I guess that it has a penis. From a biological point, if you bring back what is the goal of the human as a species is to keep on living, eating, and reproduce. Theoretically you can die after you reproduce.” Joep Van Lieshout

  • ATELIER VAN LIESHOUT | DEER LAMP Deer Lamp refers to the origin of human beings, humankind’s earliest art works found in cave paintings which celebrated hunting, surviving, eating, and atavistic worship of nature. Inspired by pictures of animals that survived the millenia, this belongs to The New Tribal Labyrinth, a body of work about returning back to the future and finding new rituals and solutions for the future while honouring our humble beginnings.

  • ATELIER VAN LIESHOUT | WALKING STICK 5 HOURGLASS As part of this series, Van Lieshout has created two related staff-shaped “walking sticks”, sculptures that seem like scepters of wisdom. These refer to visionaries, forerunners who redeem the masses and lead the way into the future. One staff shows an image of devotion, rationality and loss, whilst the other refers to primitivism and fertility. The works question the position of visionaries and prophets, and the steps one needs to take before reaching the way into the future.

“Isn’t it the staff which leads the way, even before the visionary himself reaches the path to enlightenment? We should follow it in order to reach Utopia, a new world, despite the uncertainty or risk involved.” Joep Van Lieshout

The Technocrat consists of four parts that come with instructions. By following these instructions, anyone can learn to operate The Technocrat.

Objects placed inside it relate to the cycle of life: birth, coming of age, and death. Among these objects are swimming sperm. They are the life force of all living beings, and play a starring role in most of AVL’s work, representing the end of everything and the beginning of everything.

  • ATELIER VAN LIESHOUT | TREE TABLE LAMP “Perhaps the artist would be interested to know that the shapes illicit images of the lynching history in the United States. For those of us of African descent, such images evoke a plethora of emotional responses. Although I am unable to physically live with the piece, it has already moved me as only artistic expression can. For this, I truly thank the artist!” Dr. Noreen Winningham, early childhood educator
