Theresa Beyerle recently joined the staff of The University of Akron as the Associate Director of the Institute for Teaching and Learning, where she will be overseeing and coordinating the university’s Service Learning and Undergraduate Research initiatives.

Crystal Alberts is a new Women’s Network board member, sharing membership responsibilities with Kathi Bond as Membership Co-Chair.

The Greater Akron Chamber announced their 30 for the Future Award Recipients. Our own Angela Fremon and Kirsten Lino have been named.

Toby Edward was born on Sunday, August 30, to Women’s Network member-at-large Melanie Friedman and her husband. Toby weighed 7 lbs 14 oz and was 20-1/2” long, and he already needs a haircut!

Mari-Lynn Evans produced Coal Country, a documentary that will have an Ohio premier screening in Akron on September 12.

Share your expertise and shine a spotlight on yourself or your business. How? Women’s Network is seeking members who will write informative articles on a broad range of topics including, but not limited to, career development, women’s health issues, financial matters, networking tips, caring for aging family members, surviving a down economy, etc. Please note: this is not an opportunity to write an advertisement. It is an opportunity to impart valuable, general information about your particular area of expertise.

There’s a difference between a career champion and a bench warmer. A conference focused on how to be a “career champion” to strategically manage your career and job search will be held September 30 at the Cuyahoga Falls Natatorium, 7:45 AM- 4 PM. Targeted for job seekers and people in all stages of their career, Career Fitness Day will feature Wall Street Journal and CNN.com columnist and human resources consultant, Peter Weddle, as keynote speaker.

Diana Miller, president of Career Navigation Group, Munroe Falls, Ohio, and sponsor of the event, said Career Fitness involves “strategically training” for your career just as an athlete would plan and execute his or her training for a sport or workout regimen.

Tickets to the Career Fitness Conference will also include several presentations and networking opportunities, Wellness, fitness, and health experts will speak on how to “tuneup” your body, mind and psyche for future career success; a free resume critique ($75.00 value); the opportunity to meet with a local career coach ($100.00 value); a FREE ticket to use the Natatorium facilities -come prepared to work out or swim ($11.00 value); and a continental breakfast and lunch.

Tickets will go on sale August 15 at www.careerfitnesspro.com. Job seeker group members can purchase tickets for $69 each, individual tickets for $89 each. Seating is limited and no tickets will be sold at the door. The event starts at 7:45 AM with registration and a continental breakfast. Presentations begin at 8:30 AM.

The Women’s Endowment Fund of Akron Community Foundation and the Medina County Women’s Endowment Fund have joined together to host the “Outrageous Acts for Social Justice Party” on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2009, from 6 to 8 p.m. The event will be held at Happy Days Lodge, located in the scenic Cuyahoga Valley National Park off state Route 303 in Peninsula.

The Outrageous Acts event is being held in honor of Gloria Steinem’s 75th birthday and will celebrate women from both Summit and Medina counties who have positively impacted the lives of others by dedicating themselves to equality and social justice causes. Two “Outrageous Acts for Social Justice” awards will be presented during the event; each fund will honor one individual.

Attendees are encouraged to wear an outrageous hat for a chance to win a People’s Choice Award, which will be presented to the individual with the most original hat design.

The event is being sponsored by CommonGood Consulting Inc., Pam Kiltau, Rhonda Davis Esq., Zuckerman Consulting Group, The Brennan Family Foundation, Superior Beverage, Minx Design and Sweet Mary’s Bakery.

The event cost of $25 per person covers food by Moe’s Restaurant, drink and entertainment; $5 per ticket is tax-deductible and will benefit the Medina County Women’s Endowment Fund, the Women’s Endowment Fund of Akron Community Foundation and the Ms. Foundation for Women. The documentary Coal Country will have its Ohio premier at the Akron Civic Theatre on Saturday, September 12. The film, about the impact of mountaintop-removal mining, comes from Akron producer Mari-Lynn Evans.

Women’s Network presented Fran Wells, director of Leadership Stark County, as the special guest in the Lunch with a Notable Woman Series (Jackson-Belden) on August 26th at Glenmoor County Club. Fran served as an instructor substitute for the Stark County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities for twelve years, followed by seven years as a learning resource specialist at Canton Country Day School.

Fran, a graduate of Leadership Stark County’s 14th class, has served as director since the summer of 2002. Under her direction, the Leadership Board of Trustees conducted and implemented a strategic plan, the office staff has gained stability and grown, and a sponsorship program has been established. The Leadership Stark County Signature program, established in 1987, collaborates with thirteen Northeast Ohio Leadership programs in a Regional Economics Program Day.
