When push came to shove in 1960 for a young R&B singer named Benjamin Nelson, he thought he could count
on the support of his fellow members of a newly-retooled vocal group known as the Drifters.
The ensemble already had several hit singles under its belt and was getting solid bookings when one of the members acciden-tally saw the contract for one of their live shows. The Drifters — who were originally known as the Five Crowns — were to receive $5,000 for the show, which was big money in the music business more than a half-century ago.
The problem, however, was that the group’s manager was paying each member a salary — $100 a week — and the Drifters were working several gigs a week.
When the group went to confront their manager, they appointed Nelson – who would soon change his name to Ben E. King — as their spokesman, reasoning that it would be difficult for the manager to fire the band’s lead singer.
“I got up, made my little speech, and the manager said, ‘If you’re unhappy, you can leave,’” King recalls. “I said OK, I drifted over to the door, went out and closed it. I was under the assumption the other four would come out in a minute.”
But the only person to follow King was the Drifters’ road manager, who told King that he was confident he could make it as a solo artist, especially since King had writ-ten a song that was a hit-in-waiting for the Drifters — “Stand By Me.”
“I wrote ‘Stand By Me’ specifically for the Drifters, and I brought it to our manager’s office, we rehearsed the song and it sound-ed great,” he says. “Our manager, George Treadwell, told me it wasn’t a bad song, but that we didn’t need it.”
It wasn’t long after that brush-off that King went the solo route, and he had some pretty impressive music industry executives standing by him, like song-writers Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller (who co-wrote “Stand By Me”) and Atlantic Records hotshots Ahmet Ertegun and Jerry Wexler.
With their support and encouragement — and a handshake agreement, not a con-tract — they helped make King a successful solo artist who consistently hit the charts with songs like “Save the Last Dance For Me,” “Spanish Harlem” and “I (Who Have Nothing).”
But it was “Stand By Me” that will forev-er be his musical signature, and it’s one of the few songs in music history that hit the Top 10 twice — 25 years apart. The song hit No. 1 in 1961, then gained an entirely new audience in 1986 when it became the title track for the Rob Reiner film of the same name and was released as a single for

a second time, where it peaked at No. 9.King, who headlines Friday and Saturday
night (April 12 & 13) at the Atlantic Club, says he really can’t explain why the song has held up so well for over 50 years. He says it would have probably been a big hit for the Drifters if their manager hadn’t given it the brush-off.
Sadly, no recording exists of the group singing the song, because they never recorded the rehearsals of that number before they previewed it for Treadwell.
“[There was] a world of difference” between the group’s effort and King’s solo version.
“They did harmony lines, and lot of [lyri-cal] answers,” King remembers. “The basics to the song were still there, but the harmo-nies made it very different.”
The song has been covered by a variety of artists over the years, and King is a fan of most of the covers, especially John Lennon’s and Otis Redding’s.
“The thing about Lennon’s version is that he was a great songwriter, and for him to sidestep his life and do that song, and put his own identity on it, it became a total John Lennon song,” King says, unable to conceal the pride in his voice.
King feels the song resonates with people because the lyric is pretty timeless.
“Everybody takes the song and adapts it to a moment or a time in their life,” he says. “It has a connection with people. People get married to it, people get divorced to it.”
But King never gave a second thought to the fact he was writing a timeless hit when he began working on the song in 1960. However, he knew right from the start that it was a “great” song.
“Like most writers, every song is great when you’re writing it,” he explains. “You hear and you experience the feelings in it, and you just embrace it.” ■

Concert Review: Brian Regan The Borgata, Atlantic City, April 6By Jeff Schwachter
Ocean City celebrates comedy and basset hounds with the 28th
Annual Doo Dah Parade tak-ing place on Saturday, April 13. This comedy parade com-plete with over 500 basset hounds begins at noon on Asbury Ave. from 6th St. to 12th St. and then up to the Boardwalk ending at the Music Pier. Special fea-tures at the parade will be “Perky” Peggy King, one of TV’s first singer celebrities; John McPherson, a syndicated cartoonist, and Betty Lampert, a 79-year-old baton twirler. The basset hounds will also par-ticipate in the hilarious Basset Hound Olympics set for Friday, April 12, at 1pm on the Tabernacle Grounds (6th and Asbury Ave.). Following the Olympics, humorist Dr. Joel Goodman will present a program on the benefits of humor at the Ocean City Library (17th and Simpson Ave.) from 3-4pm. Also on April 12 at 7pm, a Doo Dah Comedy Show has been scheduled for the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace. The show will feature songs by King, a cartoon talk by McPherson and the annual appearance of the impersonators of legendary comedi-ans who also ride in the parade. These include Groucho Marx, Charo, Jack Benny, Abbott and Costello and Lucy performers. Admission for individuals or families will be by donation of canned or dried food for the Ocean City Food Cupboard or a donation of $10 for the cupboard. The evening will also include a Tribute to Soupy Sales, rescheduled from last year because of technical difficulties. Trudy Sales, Soupy’s widow and a former June Taylor dancer, will participate in the event. The parade will be followed by the colorful PieAsco when folks sit in grand-stands and smoosh each other in the face with shaving cream pies. Contact 525-9300 to particpate.
A popular jazz and blues series emerges from winter hibernation and returns to two venues at the Atlantic Club Casino Hotel. Every Friday and Saturday night a
rotating lineup of blues artists, all of whom have toured with and/or recorded with many of the biggest names in the music business, perform at BB’s Beer and Burgers from 9pm-1am. Every Sunday from 6-9pm, top jazz musicians take the stage at Ono Chinese Bistro, which offers spectacular ocean views. There is never a cover charge at either venue, and each features a 5-7pm Happy hour with $5 martinis or wines by the glass, $2 domestic bottles and drafts, $3 imported bottles and $2 featured shooters. BB’s (open noon-1am Friday and Saturday, and noon-10pm Sunday) also has a 10pm-midnight Happy hour with the same specials, and Ono (open Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 5:30-10pm) offers half-priced appetizers, sushi and bottles of wine. Ono’s Happy hour is extended to 9pm during jazz performances. Coming May 5-6 to BB’s will be pianist/songwriter Danny Kean. Blind since birth, Kean took up piano at age two and by age 15 was playing jazz joints in New York City. At age 18 he released his first album, Blind by Design. Ono’s May music slate opens with pianist Elio Villafranca and bassist Tim Lekan on May 5. Villafranca is at the forefront of the latest generation of remarkable Cuban pianists, composers and bandleaders that have made major creative contributions to the international development of modern jazz. In 2010 he was nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of Best Latin Jazz Album of the Year. Lekan began his musical journey touring the United States playing electric bass in R&B bands, then gravitated toward the acoustic bass due to his love of jazz. Originally from Cleveland, Lekan has been an integral part of the South Jersey music scene for over 20 years. For complete performer lineups, go to atlanticclubcasino.com/events.
An hour before his return to Atlantic City’s Borgata on Saturday
night, April 6, Brian Regan and his entourage were still heading up from Baltimore. The comic’s previous day had been spent in part at Camden Yards taking in the Orioles home game. (Regan’s tour manager Andy Levitt is from the Baltimore area and he was stoked as the O’s beat the Twins 9-5.) It was Regan’s first day off after several gigs in a row.
Backstage at the Borgata Event Center before the show, Regan, very tall in person, sat in his dressing room with his girlfriend Sara, Levitt and opening stand-up Jim Colliton. Regan was met with fans (and at least one local entertainment writer) before Colliton took the stage at about 8:10pm to a full house.
Before anybody took to the stage, a string of modern-day Van Morrison songs played over the Event Center sound system. Songs such as “Days Like This,” “Wavelength,” “Tore Down a la Rimbaud,” “Someone Like You” and “Real Real Gone” — likely from the 2007 compilation album Still on Top: The Greatest Hits. (Levitt says Regan has this CD played before every show.) Regan did an hour of mostly new and often riotous material, saving a few of his most popular bits as encores, taking requests from the audience only then.
While Regan’s new material is hilarious as ever, it includes a harsher outlook on life and humanity in particular, while bemoaning the fact that his body is beginning to break down. Although he’s always viewed as a “big kid,” due to his trade-mark mannerisms and facial expressions and jokes about Pop Tarts and Krispy Kreme, Regan, 54, is growing up in a sense. He’s now also including bits about getting older, riffing on world politics, and, like Carlin, Seinfeld and the best of them, pointing out the funny things many of us deal with every day, but just haven’t articulated yet. Two years from now Regan should have another hour or so of new material. Catch him when he returns to Atlantic City. The “clean” comic doesn’t curse and wouldn’t mind seeing the younger set in his audiences, but some of the material may go over the head of anyone under 12 years old. But not all of it — as long as they like doughnuts.

appearances on folk hero David Bromberg’s new Use Me, the guitar and fiddle master’s first album since 2007’s acclaimed comeback release, Try Me One More Time, the 11-track collection would still be one of the most interest-ing 2013 releases thus far. Asking some of his favorite songwriters to pen tunes for the album, and some to play with him on the sessions, Bromberg focusses his virtuoso playing and wobbly low-range voice (which is start-ing to sound like Lou Reed meets Dock Boggs when he talks-sings, as in the soulful John Hiatt song “Ride on Out a Ways”) on a variety of musical styles playing with acts such as Widespread Panic, the late Levon Helm, Dr. John, Los Lobos, Linda Ronstadt, Tim O’Brien, Vince Gill and Keb’ Mo’ — with the title track produced by the famous Philly duo Phil & Joe Nicolo (the Butcher Brothers). The result is entertaining, with one bow in old-time music and the other in more contemporary sounds. Although it may seem like an odd mix, Bromberg and his buds pull it off exception-ally well. (Bromberg and his quartet play the Landis Theater in Vineland on April 12.) — Jeff Schwachter

Warmer weather took a while to reach southern New Jersey this spring, but it was a warm-weather trend
that nearly took out the Cape Bank Jazz @ The Point festival shortly after it began 16 springs ago.
Longtime jazz fan and former Somers Point community education and recreation director Nick Regine put the festival togeth-er as a single-day, single-venue indoor fund-raiser, but a sunny 75-degree April day did a number on attendance when everyone preferred being outside. Undeterred, Regine and his cohorts brought the festival back as a multi-day, multi-venue nighttime event that has thrived, raising thousands of dol-lars for the Somers Point School District’s arts and music programs over the years.
A huge part of its success is the levels of talent Regine and the Somers Point Jazz Society (SPJS) has brought to the table each spring, accentuated this year by one of the greatest jazz guitarists of all time, South Philadelphia product (and no stranger to the South Jersey shore) Pat Martino. Playing two sets in the head-liner slot Saturday night (8pm and 10pm) at Sandi Pointe Coastal Bistro’s ballroom, Martino — who is managed by Brigantine resident and Grammy-winning record pro-ducer Joe Donofrio — will perform with his trio including Pat Bianchi on Hammond B3 organ and Carmen Intorre Jr. on drums.
Two other artists making their Jazz @ The Point premiers include John Colianni — the pianist in the Les Paul Trio since 2003, carrying on the guitar legend’s longtime Monday night gig at the Iridium in New York City since Paul passed away in 2009 — and jazz vocalist Rhenda Fearrington, who performs two sets with her sextet at Sandi Pointe’s ballroom Sunday at 4pm and 6pm. Colianni is playing the Somers Point fest for the first time but has been a regular
at Ono lounge ever since the Atlantic Club Casino started a weekend jazz series there last year. Colianni will appear at Ono for a fifth time on May 19.
Fearrington’s only prior appearance at the Somers Point festival was as a spectator.
“I can’t even express my excitement about the 14th!” says Fearrington after a recent rehearsal for her Jazz @ The Point debut. “I’ve attended as a spectator over the years and my most memorable experience was meeting Minister Rina Terry [the pastor of the Cape May United Methodist Church, who opens the festival Thursday evening at the Mission Point Church with a poetry, prose and spoken-word recitation, backed by pianist Jon Pruitt and bassist Steve Varner]

and hearing [Philly jazz legend] John Swana on trumpet [in 2007]. Afterward, myself and an entourage of musicians went to a diner for a bite and simply shared some of the best jazz moments I can remember. The stage transition was seamless, the sound was won-derful, and I met the son [Mike Randolph] of Popsie [William “Popsie” Randolph, a leg-endary jazz photographer with ties to Ocean City who passed away in 1978]. I remember purchasing two of his photographs of Art Blakey and John Coltrane for [her fiancée] Victor’s birthday.”

Unfortunately for Jackie Lee, “The Duck” was a one-hit wonder. In the record indus-try, if you didn’t have two or three hits they usually wouldn’t produce an album, so I don’t think it appeared on one, unless it’s on a compilation.
I saw an article about Shirley MacLaine that mentioned her agent, Jack Gilardi. I remember Annette Funicello was married to a man by this name — is it her husband? Also, how is Annette? — Barbara Nathan, Ventnor City
Unfortunately, as we were putting this column to bed, we got word of Annette’s passing. As you may know, Annette had severe nervous system damage due to mul-tiple sclerosis, which she suffered from for over 20 years. She remained in touch with close friends Shelley Fabares and Frankie Avalon until the end. Jack Gilardi was Annette’s first husband — they divorced in 1981. Their son, Jack Jr., is also in the busi-ness as a successful Hollywood producer. ‘Jurassic Park’ back on big screen for 20th anniversary By Lori Hoffman • [email protected]
Before the improvements in 3D that have made them a regular part of the moviegoing experience, great classic
movies needed an excuse to be released, usually a major anniversary. These days, popular movies are showing up back in the-aters heralded as the “new 3D version.” The Lion King was the most successful so far, hitting the top of the US box office. Titanic and Finding Nemo were also hits in 3D.
Jurassic Park offered the best of old and new excuses for its re-release last week: it was the film’s 20th anniversary now with an updated 3D version. While it is would seem a perfect choice for 3D conversion, when a film hasn’t been designed and shot with 3D in mind, the conversion doesn’t add much to visual impact of the movie. But, since the movie is one of Spielberg’s biggest and best popcorn movies, who cares?
It was a blast seeing this wonderful fam-ily film back on the big screen even if the T-Rex didn’t look any better in 3D chasing the jeep in one of the movies’ most memo-rable scenes. It was perfect just the way it was and so is the movie.
It was also fun seeing child star Joseph Mazzello as the brave little dinosaur fan Tim. Mazzello, who began acting at age five and whose films include The River Wild and Radio Flyer in his younger days, turns 30 later this year and can currently be seen as the sharpshooter Mouse in G.I. Joe: Retaliation. Some child actors look nearly the same when they grow up (Jodie Foster is a prime example), but Mazzello is nearly
unrecognizable compared to his child acting years.
The 3D conversion frenzy is not going away and I’m looking forward to a few of them. I was excited about Independence Daybeing re-released in 3D for this coming July 4 weekend, but those plans have been put on hold and it might not happen at all, which is a bummer.
Star Wars: Episode II — Attack of the Clones arrives on Sept. 20 in 3D, and Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sitharrives Oct. 4. While I’m not as big a fan of the second trilogy as I am of the masterful original three films, they still should be good candidates for 3D conversion.
One problem not just with conversions, but also with so many new films being shot in 3D, is that of 3D fatique. With so many movies in 3D, the excitement isn’t there anymore. We expect our blockbusters to be delivered in 3D. That’s why Life of Pi was heralded as a breakthrough film — newly minted Oscar-winning director Ang Lee really did something spectacular with the 3D. In his hands it was no longer a gimmick but an instrument to expand his artistic vision.
That said, as much as I admire filmmaker Baz Luhrmann (Strictly Ballroom, Romeo + Juliet, Australia, Moulin Rouge), I’m won-dering why he is releasing The Great Gatsbyin 3D. I’m not sure what 3D will bring to the table in this remake of the F. Scott Fitzgerald adaptation. n

While the financial news about Atlantic City’s casino gaming revenues has been on a downward trend for some
time, the dining side of the casino business continues to flourish.
The annual and very popular Atlantic City Beer & Music Festival took place last weekend and the Atlantic City Food and Wine Festival arrives as an ongoing smash hit every summer. A trend toward special dinner events seems to be the hot new activ-ity this spring with a Scotch and Cigar din-ner at Borgata’s Old Homestead Steakhouse April 12 and a Chef Jose Garces Dining Event April 18 at Revel (not to mention the return of Taste of Revel set for early May).
Tropicana Casino & Resort is joining the party April 14-20 with its first ever Seafood Week. The casino is rolling out this celebra-tion of the fruits of the sea with property-wide seafood specials, drink specials and discounted retail shopping. Enjoy fresh sea-food at FIN, shop nautical fashions and accessories in The Quarter, or unwind with a sea salt scrub at bluemercury spa. And of course the Trop is serving up seafood every which way.
The official Seafood Week Kickoff will take place Monday, April 15, at 12:30pm in Palm Walk where guests can sample FIN’s famous lobster bisque, share the wonder of the Atlantic City Aquarium’s touch tank, and catch a special “Under the Sea” themed Zumba demo by Tilton Fitness.

Buddakan Boasts Six-Day, Six Hour Happy Hour
The Pier Shops at Caesars is going headlong into spring and summer with some exciting changes, not the least of which are recession-busting Happy hour specials at all of its upper-level dining establishments. Foremost on the list would be a six-hour, six-day-per-week Happy hour at Buddakan boasting a spread of $5 specials in its bar area every Sunday through Friday from noon to 6pm. For a mere five bucks guests have their choice of Szechuan pork or chicken-and-ginger dumplings, Cantonese or tuna spring rolls, spicy rock shrimp bao buns, tempura vegetables, steamed edamame pods or “Zen”-ful donuts served in a sweet cream, banana and chocolate sauce. Refined It’Sugar, New Auntie Anne’s & Cinnabon, Among the Many New Changes to The Pier Shops at Caesars By Ray Schweibert
A gateway attraction, and one of the most popular tenants (par-ticularly among the young’uns)
in The Pier Shops at Caesars since the luxury shopping mall opened in 2006, has been the “candy store and more” called It’Sugar, located just off the The Pier Shops’ Boardwalk entrance.
Recently Pier Shops’ management gave It’Sugar a fresh new facelife, including the lack of a familiar face and the retooling of nearly every nook and cranny in the place. It now sports a bright, colorful retro look to accompa-ny the plethora of candy, confections, unusual memoriabilia and comical knick-knacks (some of which are of a playful, R-rated nature for grownups).
“The first thing you may notice is that’s something’s missing,” says It’Sugar general manager Rotasha Jackson, referring to the removal of the giant likeness, made from more than a million jellybeans, of iconic Margate landmark Lucy the Elephant. It was removed as part of an expan-sion project, says Jackson, that makes
It’Sugar easier for customers to navi-gate and presents a more open, airy appearance.
“Everything’s been changed, from the fixtures, the lighting, the graphics — everything but the floor,” says Pier Shops facilities manager Karin White during an April 9 media sneak-peak of The Pier Shops’ improvements.
It’Sugar will also have a couple of sweet new neighbors, too, in beloved brands Auntie Anne’s Pretzels and Cinnabon, both to also be sited near the Boardwalk entrance. Auntie Anne’s
will have fresh-baked pretzels in the famed Philly variety as well as cinna-mon, almond, honey whole grain, sour cream and onion, and garlic flavored. Cinnabon will serve such baked goods as its classic roll, minibon, connabon bites and caramel pecanbon, as well as specialty beverages like the mochalatta chill and variously flavored chillatas.
The Pier Shops will also be relo-cating some existing tenants and adding others, including newcomers Cellairis (mobile phone fashion acces-sories), Bare Feet Boutique (fashion-able, affordable footwear) and Health Kingdom (licensed massage therapists and more). Additionally, The Pier Shops’ upper-level array of outstanding restaurants (The Continental, Phillips Seafood, Buddakan, and Souzai Sushi & Sake) have several outstanding Happy hour specials on the horizon, and recently installed cutting-edge ATM technology will offer Pier Shops visitors coupons and special offers from participating merchants. The eighth annual Atlantic City Beer & Music Festival topped its forerunner again last Friday and Saturday, April 5-6. The ‘Celebration of the Suds’ satisfied over 20,000 beer-and-music fans with not only the latest in libations from over 100 craft
breweries, but fantastic food from area establishments like Harry’s Oyster Bar, the Palm, the Mussel Bar & Grille, Tony Boloney’s, the Tun Tavern and others. Headline music acts included the Bouncing Souls, Rev. Horton Heat and Rusted Root, amusements featured a free see-sawing “mustache ride,” football place kicking contest, dunk tank, silent disco, giant sand sculpture, and seminars and vendors of all sorts. Girl On Fire is an apt title for Alicia Keys’ latest album. Keys, who will perform Saturday, April 13, at Revel,
is red hot these days.Her fifth album debuted at the top of the
Billboard charts in December and has been smoldering ever since. But that’s not sur-prising as each of Keys’ albums have scaled the apex of the charts.
“I’ve just been very fortunate,” Keys tells Atlantic City Weekly while calling from Los Angeles. “What I’ve written and recorded has gone over well with people and I’m so thankful. You never know what’s going to happen when you make something new, particularly when you try and go in a differ-ent direction each time. I’m pleased how this one has been received. You never know how the public will react. All I know is that I felt really good when I finished this one.”
The powerful album, which is filled with exuberant and dramatic tracks, brims with optimism. It helps that the title cut is an anthemic winner.
“Who knew people would love the song ‘Girl on Fire’ like they do and the rest of the album as well?” Keys says.
“I think it has something to do with the positivity that’s there throughout the
album. There’s a lot of negative out there and maybe that’s one reason the album stands out. The other big thing about this album is that it shows that I’m comfortable being in my own skin. I’m all about follow-ing my own path. I’m evolving and I’m doing what I want to do. I’m not following anybody else. That’s something I was never about. I don’t follow trends. If I want to do some-thing, I don’t look at what peers are doing, I just do it.”
What the New York native wanted to do with Girl On Fire was collaborate. There are more than 20-co-composers and nearly a dozen co-producers, who worked on the project.
Nicki Minaj and Maxwell lent their vocal skills to the production as well.
“What I love about working with other people is that I can go to a place that allows different things to happen and it’s been really cool,” Keys says.
“When I work with someone else I can cre-ate sounds that I might not have been able to make. Going to a new place excites me. I don’t like to make the same album over and over again. It’s about morphing each time I work on a project and I definitely feel that I did that with this album. I’m in a different place with Girl On Fire.
While making the album Keys married producer Swizz Beatz and had a son.
“That has made me better in every way,” Keys says. “I think every mother would agree with me on that one. I love the impact motherhood has had on me. Being a mother is incredible. As a songwriter, it has taken me to a deeper, more emotional place that I could have never known before. I have more empathy than I ever had. I experienced the most amazing thing in my life having a baby. Being a mother and a wife has had the most profound effect on me. You can’t top that. Nothing that hits the charts can touch what motherhood brings to you. It’s incredible.”
Keys has been the go-to gal when it comes to special events. She took part in the 12-12-12 concert, the Hurricane Sandy benefit in New York.
“After how bad the hurricane damaged New Jersey, I had to be part of that,” Keys says. “Absolutely devastating. When some-thing happens like that, as a recording art-ist, if you have a chance to come in and help, you should.”
Keys performed at President Obama’s inauguration in January. She changed the lyrics to “This Girl Is On Fire” to “Obama’s On Fire.”
“It was an honor to be part of the inau-guration,” Keys says. “I admire President Obama so much. I’m just glad that he has the opportunity to finish what he started. He has put us on the right path. I had a wonderful time [at the inauguration] but the reality is that this [past] election [was] so important to America and the world. Putting the twist on the song was great, but I was just happy to be part of such an event. It doesn’t get much bigger than that.”
Well, the following month Keys delivered a re-arranged version of “The Star Spangled Banner” at the Super Bowl, which is rou-tinely the highest rated television event of the year.
“I worked really hard at that arrange-ment,” Keys says. “I wanted to honor the song but to give it a style that was mine. It was incredible being in that atmosphere. Man, it’s the Super Bowl! It wasn’t just America. It was the world watching. How often do you have an opportunity to be part of something like that? It’s huge.”
It’s difficult to imagine how Keys can top what she’s done over the last decade.
“Who knows if I can sell like I once did, but I’m not worried about that,” Keys says.
“I want to continue to grow. I don’t want to be boxed in. I want to challenge the audi-ence and myself and hopefully break new ground.
“That’s what’s most important to me.” ■

As we welcome April, homeowners are preparing for the warm weather by not only packing away their win-
ter clothes, but also conducting a thorough spring cleaning of their homes.
According to Jill Middleton, owner of JillMar Rental Cleaning in Ocean City, the most common areas of the house to clean when spring cleaning include windows, door tracks and areas that haven’t been touched in several months. Spring cleaning usually also includes organizing clutter around the home.
“Do this every spring and get rid of items you haven’t used within the past year,” says Middleton. “If items are still good, donate them to a local shelter, food bank or animal rescue.”
Spring cleaning can be a big job, but it doesn’t have to be stressful. The key is to take it one step at a time and do whatever you can to shorten the amount of cleaning time.
“The key to a quick cleaning is to always work at your highest point and work down,” adds Middleton. For example, in the kitchen, she recommends cleaning the microwave first so all the crumbs fall onto the counter or range, then cleaning the range/counter area by pushing everything onto the floor. After that, it’s a matter of sweeping and mopping and then the job is done.
Because it’s possible to track crumbs and dirt through the house while cleaning, always vacuum last.
“The key is to never do anything twice,” says Middleton.
Middleton recommends wiping bathroom counters down with a dry rag first; hair is much easier to remove when dry. The same goes for sand — sweep sand into a pile and vacuum the sand prior to using any wet products.

The cost of cleaning supplies can add up quickly, so try to clean on a budget.
Purchasing cleaning products at the dollar store can be a big money saver. Individuals who use a Swiffer Wet Jet can make their own refill solution from water-diluted floor clean-er and create cleaning pads from a microfiber cloth to save on high-priced refills.
Making homemade cleaning solutions can save homeowners hundreds per year. A bleach spray made from water and bleach is great for sanitizing kitchen and bathroom surfaces, and a baking soda and vinegar solu-tion can be made to clean glasstop stoves. Remember to use cleaning products mod-erately, and not to use too much of a solu-tion unless absolutely necessary. Also, try using one-half of a sponge/cloth rather than a whole product to slash cleaning costs in half.
There is much more to spring cleaning than just housework. Spring cleaning also includes outdoor yard maintenance, which can be a pesky problem. Weeds, bugs, and dead grass are just some of the problems that homeowners encounter.
Jackie Hudson, owner of Bob’s Garden Center, a full-service garden center in Egg Harbor Township, knows these problems all too well.
As Hudson tells her customers, it is very difficult to pick weeds.
“Lawn weeds usually have very deep roots and if you don’t get the whole root it will grow back. It is very labor intensive,” she says.
Hudson’s best tip for maintaining weeds is starting a good lawn maintenance program. She suggests applying weed killer annually, usually a crabgrass preventer, and then a broadleaf (dandelion) killer.
“By sticking to a program you will be able to keep the weeds under control,” she says.

ing the ground prior to pulling. Using a knife to dig into the sides of the root will help pry the weed lose.
To keep weeds at bay without using pesti-cides, pouring boiling water on them, which will shrivel up weeds within a few days, will help. Smothering weeds with newspaper and mulch, which blocks them from getting sun-light, is also said to be a remedy.
When bugs are an issue, first make sure that the bugs are really pesky bugs, as some bugs are beneficial to the lawn.
“The best way to get take care of bugs is to bring one of them in to be identified. That way, we can tell exactly what it is and make sure you get the right product to get rid of the problem.” However, if pesticides are not an option, a home-remedy using vinegar should do the trick. Vinegar contains acetic acid, which spiders and many other creatures are defenseless to. Simply filling a spray bottle with vinegar and targeting areas such as doorframes, windowsills, and backyard living quarters will keep your home pest-free.
While there are some do-it-yourself solu-tions, some lawn-care items are best pur-chased at the store, such as mulch and soil. Be sure to keep an eye out for torn bags, which are typically offered at a reduced rate. However, when it comes to fertilizer, Hudson says the old phrase “you get what you pay
for” rings true. According to Hudson, Scotts is the lead-
ing brand in lawn care. Their fertilizers are designed to give an even distribution of nutrients, guaranteed not to burn, and will help keep your lawn green for four to six weeks. Cheaper fertilizers can burn the lawn and give a “quick green,” but the green will not last. Some homeowners may also want to consider organic products from Espoma, a local company based in Millville. While organic products tend to not kill as many weeds and may take a few years to build up in the lawn, they are great for those who want to avoid chemical killers.
No matter which lawn solution you go with, the most important thing to remember is that one aspect of yard maintenance is often dependant on another. For example, keeping the lawn watered during the sum-mer months is the key to keeping a green lawn, and keeping a green lawn makes it difficult for weeds to take over.
Taking on indoor and outdoor tasks as a group and playing favorite music while work-ing can make the treacherous task of spring cleaning much more enjoyable. Keep in mind that once it’s finished, it’s time to kick back and enjoy the warm weather.
That should be motivation in itself. ■

It’s no surprise that Diana Krall — whose sultry voice, good looks and evocative piano playing made her an
instant star in the jazz world beginning in the 1990s — has always had one foot in the past and one foot in the present.
Her first album, Stepping Out, in 1993 was followed by a Nat King Cole tribute All for You. Next came the album that earned her multiple Grammys and crossover appeal, When I Look in Your Eyes (1999). The inter-national best seller earned her a Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Performance and was the first jazz album to be nominated for Album of the Year in 25 years.
Born in 1964 in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada, Krall attended Boston’s Berklee College of Music in the early 1980s and in 2003 married Elvis Costello, who has collaborated with her recently under the nom de plume Howard Coward.
Krall is currently touring in support of her new release, Glad Rag Doll, and a trip to Atlantic City (she headlines at Borgata Saturday, April 13) is perfectly timed as the album is dedicated to swing music and jazz from the Boardwalk Empire era of the 1920s, extending into the 1930s.
Listening to the album you can close your eyes and imagine Krall in her glad rags per-forming at Nucky Thompson’s favorite speak-easy, Babette’s (before it was burned down, of course). If Boardwalk Empire’s executive producer and showrunner Terrence Winter is on the ball, he should buy the rights to several cuts from the album to use on the next season of the series.
According to Krall, Glad Rag Doll’s specif-
ic inspiration was family get-togethers and sing-alongs at her grandmother’s house. As she explains in an interview for ArtsDesk.com, “They loved music. They were real characters; it was sort of like the movie Radio Days. Not a lot of money at all, but enough money to have a piano in the front room, and a lot of cigarette smoke, a lot of drinks, accordion playing. They didn’t have enough money to go out so they made their own entertainment. It wasn’t like a Judy Garland film you’d imagine, sitting around the piano like a lovely family; it was a bunch of screaming characters.”
Krall gave producer T Bone Burnett a CD of 35 songs from her family’s extensive col-lection to whittle down and shape into what has become Glad Rag Doll.
Explains Krall, “You have to be fearless. And being fearless is terrifying.”
She also notes that, “I feel good about everything I’ve done in the past. I’ve got to be very careful that, in my enthusiasm for this, that it doesn’t mean I’m leaving what I did before behind. I’ve just made a different
movie. Right now this is the creative place that I’m in and I’m really liking it.”
In an on-line interview with Krall and Burnett conducted by her husband, she talks about the visual component of the music. “I was trying to create my own old movie. I wanted to live those Carole Lombard char-acters that I saw on late-night pictures, The Ziegfeld Follies. ... Twenties music had a much more visual character for me.”

In line with a desire to create more of a visual appeal, Krall is presenting a more elaborate show on tour than her usual norm of performing just with a band.
“It’s much more ambitious than anything I’ve ever done,” she says. “I’m using film and props, and I have a player piano in there and my dad’s gramophone on one side.” ■
Producer T Bone Burnett calls the swing music of the 1920s and 1930s “sex music,” and hear-
ing Diana Krall’s already sexy signa-ture tones let loose on this collection of Roaring Twenties and 1930s tunes illustrates his point to perfection. “We Just Couldn’t Say Goodbye” evokes the regret of an affair that should be over but continues to smolder. The fabulous “There Ain’t No Sweet Man That’s Worth the Salt of My Tears” is a delightful mid-tempo ditty that shows us that the roots of rock ’n’ roll truly go back to the 1920s with a blues/ragtime blend. “You Know — I Know E’vrything’s Made For Love” is an uptempo treasure with ukulele work by Elvis Costello that would be perfect as the backdrop for some mischief on an episode of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire. The title track has more of a modern feel with its simplicity and a beautiful acoustic guitar riff by Marc Ribot, a major contributor on most of the songs in this collection. Krall hits a rousing rocka-billy groove with “I’m A Little Mixed Up,” and other especially tasty tracks include “Lonely Avenue,” “Wild River to Cross,” which has a country feel, and “When the Curtain Comes Down,” which is a anoth-er track that would fit in on Boardwalk
Empire — with background vocals by Costello as well as more ukulele. I have an image in my head of some Boardwalk
Empire carnage with this song playing as a counterpoint. Fans of old-time music done with an occasional modern twist should find Glad Rag Doll a superb addi-tion to their collection. — LH
