8Lesson 1:What are Atoms and
Elements?
9TheAtomicTheory Democritus(400BC)proposedthatmatterwasnotmadeofparticles.Thistheorywasacceptedfor2000years. Bytheearly1800s,johnDaltonproposedanatomictheoryofmatterthatwasbasedonexperimentalevidence.Histheoryisthatallmatterismadeupoftinyparticlescalledatoms.

Compounds?

ThePeriodicTable Elementscanbegroupedtogetherbecausetheyhavesimilarproperties. In1869DmitriMendeleevorganizedelementsbytheiratomicmasses,showingpredictablepatterns. Itwasfoundlaterthatanorderbasedonthenumberofprotonsinoneatomofanelementisbetterthanonebasedonatomicmass. Inthemodernperiodictable,elementsarearrangedinorderofatomicnumber.
