ATTACHMENT B to History of Kilkelly Family – 1500 to 1900 –  Five “slughts” of Kilkelly in 1500

Chancery Bill McGillikelly v McGillikelly 23 April 1616 records:‐

That the land anciently known by the name of Kinel Gowry, Co. Galway contained 18 quarters* of land descended to

the clan McGillikelly from their common ancestor Dahy Mac Feagh (i.e. Da Thi Mac Fiachra, Lord of Hy Fiachra), That

the clan being so seized , the following five brothers or cousins, viz; Shane McGillikelly, Cosnagh McGillikelly, Teig

Duff McGillikelly, Hugh McGillikelly and Gildernew McGillikelly formed themselves into five Slughts, and made

partition of the territory into five Farren Slughts, That the portion set out to Hugh McGillikelly descended to his great

grandson William Duffe McGillikelly, who in 1590 was then the sole man of all his slught then living and who for 18

years previous to that year owing to the continuance of war in Co. Galway, had not been able to occupy his land. In

1590, in order  to be re‐instated William Duffe came to Shane McOwny McGillikelly, the Chieftain of the Clan who

thereupon called together the principal men of the Slughts viz: Morogho McGillykelly, Moriartagh Duffe McGillykelly

(father of Hugh Mergagh and Donagh McRickard McGillykelly) and in public assembly they re‐instated William Duffe

to his lands. Soon after regaining possession  William Duffe sold a large portion to Brian reogh McGillykelly. The clan

jealous of the rising strenght of Brian reogh, endeavoured to dispossess him. To secure his title to the purchased

land, Brian reagh in 1616,  filed the Bill against the principal men of the slughts (his own excepted)viz: Ownie

McShane McGillykelly, Hugh Mergagh McGillykelly and Cosnagh McRickard reagh McGillikelly.

 * Quarter = 4 cartrons and each cartron is approximately 30 acres. => 18 quarters = 2160 acres
