President’s Communiqué

EAST KAWARTHA CHAMBE R. BUILDING BUSINESS. BUILDING COMMUNITY.

Hello Chamber Members:

After a busy and productive summer, the East Kawartha Chamber of Commerce Board and Executive is back at the table to continue its important work on behalf of its members. From issues such as Member Benefits to the Trent Severn Waterway, the Board is continuing its push to provide the best solutions for businesses in the area.

The staff and volunteers are also busy planning our Annual Gala and Awards of Excellence evening, an annual highlight for all. Congratulations to those who have been nominated! This year it will once again be held at Viamede on November 19th, 2011. See the details on page 1 and be sure to attend to support the many businesses represented and the Chamber itself - this event being our major fundraiser for the year. It always sells out, so be sure to reserve your tickets soon.

It needs to be noted that our newest staff member, Tammy Underwood, has been a valuable asset already in the busy office setting of the Chamber. She has made great strides in assisting the Board with the many financial duties of her position.

We are, however, very sad to say that Jillian Harrington, our Marketing

and Member Services Coordinator, has decided to move on from the Chamber to pursue her career in teaching. We value greatly the contribution that Jillian has made to the Chamber in her short time here and we wish her much success in her future endeavours.

With this change comes new opportunities and we are now actively searching for a new coordinator to continue the great work Jillian has begun. Posting details can be viewed on our website. The closing date is October 5th. The Board believes that this is a very valuable position within the Chamber as it focuses on the Members and provides greater contact with them to address their needs.

Collectively, we are able to address the many issues that face each of us on a day to day basis. At a recent convention, it was stressed that it is difficult for one business to effect change, but together, as a single voice, we can change much. As the business of doing business continues to evolve and become more burdened with so many difficult issues, it is important to support those organizations that can carry your voice forward.

I must once again thank the very dedicated volunteers and staff of the Chamber. Daily they contribute to the success of the Chamber and its membership while enhancing the profile of the area in which we live and conduct our business.

The staff at our ServiceOntario office also continue to work diligently to provide the highest standards of service for licensing and health cards. Remember that this office is now open Thursday evenings until 8:00 pm - currently a great time to stop in if you wish to avoid a lineup. Also, additional health card services, such as converting red & white cards to photo cards will be introduced later this fall.

I am looking forward to the upcoming months and hope that each of you will be able to join us for one of the many activities we have planned.

Regards, Scott B. Davidson

President Scott Davidson presents Jillian with a token of

For the most part my regular articles are about group benefit plans and other related insurance products and services. I'm straying a little bit here with this article in order to make you aware of something that will affect everyone in Canada. Being both a buyer and seller of life insurance products I see this particular issue as being quite important for many people and therefore worthy of note.

Individual permanent life insurance premiums are expected to increase by as much as 30% in the coming months. One major Canadian insurance company has announced that they are increasing their rates on October 15th and of course others will soon follow.

There are two factors that make these premium rate increases necessary and might actually threaten the long term sustainability of these products. The first is that bond yields have decreased substantially in the last ten years. Life insurance companies in Canada invest the premium money they receive from permanent policyholders in safe assets like bonds. While bond yields in the year 2000 were 6.3% they are now almost 50% less at 3.3% and they're expected to stay low into the foreseeable future.

Benefit Facts by Brian D. Bulger - Group Insurance Plan Representative

Permanent Life Ins. Premiums: Significant Increases The second factor is that the Canadian insurance industry is going to be obliged to adopt to new international accounting standards that require them to put more capital into their business. The primary reason for this is because strong price and benefit guarantees are included in most permanent products that Canadian consumers currently enjoy.

Broadly defined life insurance products can be broken into two categories; term and permanent. Initially term insurance is a very inexpensive product. It's easy to understand and provides a benefit for a set period of time; the most popular being ten or twenty years. One of the main drawbacks of term insurance is that for most people the coverage expires before you die. Therefore, even though you will pay premiums for a long period of time your estate or beneficiaries won't receive any benefit. Further, as you get older, the price of term insurance increases dramatically and often makes it unfeasible for you to continue to keep the coverage.

Permanent insurance on the other hand, will provide you with a guaranteed amount of coverage for your entire life. It provides you with an opportunity for a

guaranteed cost with a payment period of your choosing. It's an excellent financial protection product and estate planning tool. Whole Life and Universal Life are permanent life insurance products.

I recommend that you contact a Life Insurance Broker as soon as possible to discuss your particular circumstances to see if permanent life insurance is right for you now or in the near future. And due to pricing differences be sure to speak to more than one or two Advisors to ensure that you get the best product and premium available. Premiums will never be lower than right now, so don't delay.

A fabulous time was had by all at our recent Business After Hours event hosted by the

chocolate rabbit.

The shop has expanded to include the previously vacant adjoining storefront. This has allowed Lois MacEachern to introduce new product lines and the “Mad Hatter Tea Lounge.” A few café tables and some quirky accessories create the ambience for this new taste experience in Lakefield.

The lounge features Kusmi teas from France and the rabbit‟s specially blended teas from China, Japan, India, Sri Lanka and more - artfully created by a master tea blender in

Victoria. When you have found a favourite or two, there are various sized bags available for purchase to enjoy at home.

A selection of sweet treats are available to enjoy with your expertly brewed tea - biscotti, gelato or one of the rabbit‟s handmade truffles. On Sunday the selection expands to include cupcakes, chocolate fondue and chocolate crepes.

BAH attendees eagerly gathered at the fondue table and gave kudos to the crepes - well worth a Sunday visit for these exclusive menu items!

Lois is studying to become a tea sommelier and is offering tea workshops. The one hour guided tour

through the Glorious World of Tea will include learning how to make the most of your tea, avoiding the

three common mistakes and learning to use your five senses to artfully brew tea.

The tea lounge is also available for small morning and evening events, girls‟ night out, showers, meetings, etc.

On the „rabbit‟ side, they are working on having their third chocolate machine installed. Their truffles and molded chocolate treats are made on site daily with no chemicals, preservatives or artificial ingredients. Only the best quality Swiss chocolate is used. The dark chocolate has a minimum of 70% cocoa solids and sugar free chocolate is also available.
