Monthly Summary
December Class HighlightsThis month, students worked in groups to create PowerPoint presentations that sharedinformation about an issue plaguing a country or region. The presenters introduced basic facts about the country, a major problem in the area, suggestions for improvement, important organizations or people involved, and a one-slide summary of their opinions. Audience members listened critically and asked thoughtful questions. Another very popular activity this month was the Career Field Trips. Students chose an industry that was of interest to them and visited 2 businesses for a tour and Q/A session at each. The focus of the field trip was to compare local businesses with a chain or national business in the same industry. The choices included hotels, restaurants, international trade, tourism, and coffee. In connection with the Global Economy unit in Global Issues class, AUAP students had a 1-hour simulation class in mixed sections. In random groups, students role-played a representative from 5 possible subsets of the banana industry; a group debate and
negotiation ensued about what percentage of profit each industry subset should receive, and a debriefing followed. This simulation was a meaningful and fun experience for all.
