Administrative Information Provenance: Auburn Theological Seminary, retaining ownership of their records, placed them on deposit in the Burke Library following the removal of the Seminary to Auburn Hall at Union and continues to deposit records and memorabilia. The 1847 student notebook of Edward B. Walsworth was purchased from James Dickson Books, Kilsyth in September 2007 by The Burke Library and remains the property of The Burke Library. Access restrictions: The collection is unrestricted. Preferred Citation: Item, folder number, box number, series, Auburn Theological Seminary Records at The Burke Library, Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York. Institutional History Founded by Presbyterians, in Auburn New York State, in 1818, Auburn Theological Seminary first prepared clergy for the American frontier and foreign missions. Faculty participated in the great social movements of the time: the struggles against slavery and for women's suffrage, temperance, and reforms that uplifted the poor. Auburn was one of the first theological schools in the country to educate women and to enroll students from Asia, and it was among the first to establish a summer session and a school of religious education. By the beginning of the 20th century, Auburn had become a prominent seminary and a center of theological inquiry. In the battles over the authority of the Bible, Auburn's name became attached to a famous defense of freedom. The Auburn Affirmation opposed efforts of fundamentalists to impose a single interpretation of scripture on others. In 1939 the Great Depression forced the seminary to move from Auburn, New York, to the campus of Union Theological Seminary on Manhattan's upper west side in 1939. The two seminaries have never merged but enjoy a remarkable friendship. Union offers degree programs; Auburn focuses on lifelong learning for clergy and laity, and on research addressing the needs of religious communities and the academy. With thanks to Auburn Theological Seminary Website: History section http://www.auburnsem.org/about/history.asp?nsectionid=1&pageid=2 Collection Scope and Content Note The Papers of Auburn Seminary consist of records of the institution, including historical documents dating from its founding, institutional publications such as catalogues, and detailed alumni records as well as personal papers, scrapbooks, some photographs and sermons from faculty and alumni. The move from Auburn to New York City is well documented. The materials in this collection currently span the dates of 1821 through 2001, although the bulk of the material is from 1850 - 1978. The majority of the collection consists of manuscript notebooks, correspondence, sermons and personal papers with miscellaneous deeds, photographs and other documents The collection is divided into 3 series and a number of subseries:

Processing In processing the Auburn records and papers to the Burke Library, an attempt was made to maintain the original order imposed initially to the historic records. Former classification system notation is cited in brackets: AE60/Au1: Lib-Ab thru P1821

Folded materials were flattened. Staples, rubber bands, and metal clips were removed and replaced with plastic clips. Acidic papers were interleaved with acid free paper or housed in Mylar folders. All materials were placed in acid-free folders and boxes.

Further preservation work should be carried out on items highlighted so.
