Warranty

This unit is guaranteed against defective material and workmanship fora period of two (2) years from the date of receipt by the customer.Warranty is void if inspection shows evidence of abuse, misuse orunauthorised repair. Warranty covers only replacement of defectivematerials.

If, for any reason, this unit must be returned to BUEHLER for warrantYservice, please apply for prior authorisation with shipping instructions,and include the following information: Returns Authorisation Number,Model Number, Serial Number and Reason for Return.

Environment

The MOTOPOL <8> 2000 Semi-automatic Specimen Preparation Unit is

designed to operate with electrical, pneumatic and water supplies asspecified in the installation section of this manual.

Installation

The base unit should be placed on a bench near the following services:-

1. Electrical supply 11 Q-12Ov 60Hz or 22O-24Ov 50Hz

2. Mains cold water supply.

3. Compressed air supply, filtered, lubricated and regulated to 60 psi.(4.2 bar) for the 10" and 12" MOTOPOL. 2000, or 30 psi (2.1 bar) forthe 8" MOTOPOL. 2000.

Plug in the base cable to the underside of the head

2. Connect the twin air tubes between the head and the base (1-1, 2-2).

3. Connect and adjust the drain hose from the base unit to the drain.(The elbow can be rotated to point left or right.)

4. Connect mains water inlet hose from the base to the mains watersupply.

5. Connect air supply by pushing 6mm tubing (supplied) into the air inlethole at the back of the machine.

Note:- Ensure voltage selector switch (Fig.1) Is set correctly for themains electrical supply, and the main switch is In the OFF position. A timelapse of at least 5 seconds should be allowed after switching off beforeswitching back on.

6. Plug in the mains cable to the rear of the base unit and into theelectrical supply.

7. The equipment is now ready for use.

Controls

Controls not on the front panel.

The main switch is located at the rear left corner of the unit (Fig.1).

This switch Disconnects mains voltage supply to the MOTOPOL t8 2000 when in the

down position.

Warning:- Do Not operate mains switch with wet hands.

Material removal

Selects material removal mode or time mode. Right LED.indicates which has been selected. Left LED. indicatesthe material removal cycle has completed.

If the material removal accessory is not fitted, the displaywill flash and automatically revert to the time.

Head direction

Changes the head rotational direction between contra andcomplimentary relative to the polishing wheel. The LED.indicates selections

Head down

Lowers the sample holder under pressure onto the platen forzero setting when material removal is chosen.

Raises the sample holder after the amount of material to beremoved has been entered.

Increase

Dual function dependant on selection.

If time is selected, increases the display in 10 secondincrements up to 99mins - 50 seconds. If the pad is releasedat 99mins - 50 seconds then pressed again, the display willchange to 00.00 and continue to increment up again to99 mins - 50 seconds.

If material removal is selected, increases the display in0.01 mm increments up to 3.00mm.

Decrease

Dual function dependant on selection.

If timeis selected, decreases the display in 10 secondincrements down to zero. If the touch-pad is released at zerothen pressed again the display will change to 99 mins 50seconds and continue to increment down again to 00.00.

Zero set

Dual function dependant on selection.

If time is selected, resets the display to 00.00.can then be pressed for the desired time.

The '+' or I.'

If material removal is selected, sets the Izera' position beforeinputting the amount of material to be removed.

Fluid Dispensing .

These controls are used for selecting automatic dispensing ofwater and / or abrasive during a grinding or polishing cycle.

Fluid Dispensing (Continued)

Sends si,inal to a remote abrasive dispenser, such as theMETlAP 2000, for automatic abrasive dispensing during apreparation cycle.0Switches ON or OFF. The LED. will flash if the remotedispenser is selected while the MOTOPOL ~ 2000 is in an

idle state and illuminate continually during a grinding orpolishing cycle.

Water

Turns the water on automatically during a grinding/polishingcycle supplying water to the platen and bowl wash.0~ 0The LED. will indicate it is selected, by flashing while theMOTOPOL II) 2000 is in an idle state and illuminate

continuously during a grinding/polishing cycle.

Base Controls

These controls pertain to the basefunctions only, speed variation is via aspeed control knob and water flowcontrolled by a tap, both located on thebase unit.

Selects the platen to rotate and the LED. illuminates to show ithas been selected.

Switches ON or OFF. If select~ all the LED.'s and displays inthe semi-automatic operation and the fluid dispensing areasare extinguished, while the platen is selected.

When not selected the LED's and displays are automaticallyilluminated again.

Stops all functions on the MOTOPOL. 2000 and leaves it ina safe, idle condition, without changing any previously setparameters. This is easily identified by the red squarebackground.

Base Front Panel Controls

The base front, panel is divided intothe following areas:-

Load Adjustment

This will adjust the load on the specimen holder as indicatedon the gauge.

Load Indication

Indicates the actual load applied to the specimen holder inNewtons (N) and Pounds Force (Ibsf).

1 Ibf = 4.5 N and 1 N = 0.23 Ibf.

Speed adjustment and indication c;" ~ c':~ ~ ,.'~~r~~.~~ ",!t,,:

This adjusts the platen speed between 30 and 300 rpm.

Start Buttons

The two green buttons located on either side of the power head areused to initiate all cycles that move the sample holder down. For safetythey require to be pressed within 0.20 seconds of each other and heldfor a further 5 seconds approximately.

Setting Up For Running An Automatic Cycle

Timed

For running an automatic cycle of preparation within a time range of 10 seconds to99minutes 50 seconds.

1. Select the time control, if not already selected.

2. Select the desired head speed.

3. Select the desired head direction.

4. Select the required time using the 1+1, I_I and '0' controls.

5. Set the required sample loading.

6. Set the required base speed, between 30 - 300 rpm.

7. Select the water and/or abrasive for automatic dispensing.

If the relationship of the specimen holder to platen needs to be corrected thenselecting the head down control and pushing the two green start buttons, thespecimen holder will lower onto the platen with no rotation of the head or base.

The relative positions are as follows:-

8" & 10" Single UnitsPosition specimens to overlap the platen periphery to the RIGHT HANDSIDE of the centre. n12n Single UnitPosition Specimens to overlap the platen periphery to the LEFT HANDSIDE of the centre.

8" & 10. Twin UnitsUse the LEFT HAND platen for GRINDING with the specimenspositioned to the RIGHT HAND SIDE of the centre. Use the RIGHTHAND platen for POUSHING with the specimens positioned to theLEFT HAND SIDE of the centre.

NOTE: Above applies when viewed from the front of the unit.

The head up control will return the specimen holder to the up position.

Automatic cycle can now be started by pressing the two green cycle start buttons.A cycle may be terminated at any time by pressing the stop control.

The display will count down from the time set to zero. Fifteen seconds from the endof the cycle an audible intermittent beep will sound. At the end of the cycle thebeep will sound continuously for a further 5 seconds.

Whilst the unit is running the following adjustments can be made:-

1. Time - Increase I Decrease

2. Remote Abrasive - ON / OFF

3. Water - ON I OFF

4. Platen Speed - Increase I Decrease

5. Specimen Loading - Increase / Decrease

If the cycle is allowed to complete, the finish LED. will illuminate and the display willread its previously set. time including any adjustments made during the cycle.Pressing any control will extinguish the finish LED.

Material Removal

For running an automatic cycle to remove material within the range of 0.01 mm to3.00 mm.

1. Select material removal, if not already selected. This will change thedisplay to read 00.00.

2. Select the head speed, direction and loading as previously describedunderTime.

3. Select the base speed.

4. Select the head down control.

NOTE - A specimen holder with samples set correctly with the sample setting plateand using the required abrasive surface must be used in setting up. The requiredgeometry between specimen holder and platen should be set before continuing.

5. Press the two green buttons to bring the head down, both the setzero LED. and the display will flash.

6. Press the set zero and the display will read a steady 00.00.

7. Enter the amount of material to be removed using the '+1 &controls

8. Press the head up control to raise the specimen holder.

9. Press the two green start buttons to start the material removal cycle.

The cycle will complete when the sample holder has moved down the set amountand the finish LED. will illuminate.

Timed

If a cycle is attempted without following the above sequence then the appropriateLED. IS will flash.

Whilst the unit is running the following adjustments can be made:-

Water - ON/OFF

2. Remote abrasive - ON/OFF

3. Platen speed - Increase/decrease

NOTE - It is inadvisable to adjust sample loading during a cycle as this will nullifythe zero setting.

The cycle may be cancelled at any time using the stop control. If the cycle isallowed to complete the finish LED. will illuminate, the display will read 00.00, andan audible beep will sound for 5 seconds.

Pressing any control will extinguish the finish LED.

IMAINTENANCE

Clean the bowl and guard area regularly to prevent a build up of debris. Do notallow large pieces to fall into the drain outlet.

Make sure the drain hose has a slight fall from the machine to prevent a build-up ofgrinding debris blocking the drain hose. .The drive belt is of a heavy duty type and should not need adjusting. If adjustmentbecomes necessary:- ~

1 . Disconnect mains power .2. Remove the four rubber feet and pulley cover

~3. Loosen the four motor plate mounting nuts

Slide the motor plate in the appropriate direction to tighten orslacken the belt.

4.

5. Tighten up the motor plate mounting nut.

6. Replace the pulley cover and feet.

If the belt requires replacing, proceed through steps 1 - 4, remove the belt bypulling up the belt over the larger pulley and rotating the pulley until the belt comesoff. Reversing this procedure will assist in putting the new belt on, then proceedthrough steps 4, 5 & 6. ~

MAINTENANCE

The journal bearings in the base and head are lubricated 'for lite' and require noroutine maintenance. -

Self Test Routine (STR) . .':- -

If within 5 seconds of switch on, the Time then Material removal controls arepressed together then the 5TR is initiated. All LED's. illuminate and areextinguished by pressing the app'ropriate control. If controls have not been pressedfor 5 seconds the MOTOPOL 2000 resets to the default setting. After thesuccessful completion of the 5TR the MOTOPOL. 2000 resets to the defaultsettings.

Error Codes

The following is a list of error codes that may be displayed on the LEDls if there is afailure within the software or MRA.

Error Code 1

Please call your local Buehler serviceThis will only appear at initial switch on.representative.

The MOTOPOL ~ 2000 will still be functional in the time cycle even though an error

has been detected in material removal.

Note - For the following error codes please refer to the Material Removal Accessory

installation guide section.

Safety Note. Before commencing work, ensure that the machine is isolated from the electricalsupply I air supply and water supply. .

1. Remove the large connector and air lines from the power head.

2. Remove the six (6) screws from the cover.

3. Position the head to face directly to the front

CarefuUy remove the cover by lifting up and tipping over to the right hand side and sittingon the platen area.

Rotate the thrust bearing housing (12) ~ the flat faces to the left hand side. (FIG 4)5.

6. Attad1 the scale actuator bracket to the thrust bearing housing using the screwssupplied (M4 x 12).

7. Using the M5 x 10 screws supplied attach the scale assembly onto the cylindermounting plate (13), ensuring the '0' ring drive dog is located In the scale capturebracket and the scale is readable from the rear of the head.

Install the battery In the read head. NOTE: DO NOT HOLD THE BATTERY BY THEFLAT FACES, it will discharge through your fingers. Hold by the edge only.

9. loosen the four (4) Phillips head screws and slide the scale down so the bottom is levelwith the casting.

10. Turn the scale on and switch to MM units.

11 Ensuring the muck is in the fully up position, move the slide up 3.00mm - +/- O.5mmand tighten the four (4) Phillips head screws.

12. Pull the chuck down and ensure the reading Increases and stays positive.

IDO NOT SWITCH OFF OR CHANGE UNITS

13. Remove the cable access cover on the digital head and plug In the MRA cable.

14. Ensure the chuck is in the up position and trail the cable across the casting left to right.Place the cable tie pad centrally in front of the gear cover and tie-wrap the cable inplace.

15. Plug the cable into the vacant plug on the PCB (X1) (Plug on lower board).

16. Ensure the scale display is switched on, reads between 2.5 - 3.5mm (mm unitsselected.)

17. Carefully replace the cover ensuring no cables are trapped.

18. Replace six (6) flat head screws.

19. Plug the large connector into the head and reconnect the twin air tubes.

20. Re-connect electrical supply, air supply and water supply.

The unit is now ready to be run in materiaJ removaJ mode.

Troubleshooting MR~ error codes

Error code 2

Incorrect setting of Material Removal Accessory units.

The internal digital scale has been set in inches. Remove the cover as per theinstallation guide, follow steps 9 - 12. and replace cover.

Error code 3

Incorrect set-up of Material Removal Accessory.

The internal digital scale has been set-up with a negative reading. Remove thecover as per the installation guide, follow steps 9 - 12 and replace cover.

Error code 5

Incorrect setting of Material Removal Accessory.

Remove the cover as per theThe unit has detected a fault during running.installation guide.

Check the reading on the digital scale if 'B' appears in the display screen or thedisplay is blank the battery requires replacing. See step 8 - 12. If the display isnormal, check the connections at either end to ensure the cable is fully plugged in.

Error code 9

Material Removal Accessory fails to respond.

The unit has detected a fault and will not allow you to use MRA The possible faultsare the same as for error code 5. Please see error code 5 above for correctiveaction.
