Editors letter... July has been an busy month with School fayres

raising funds for the next school year and

residential trips galore! The Arrow wishes all

young people leaving school and taking on the

next journey of life the very best! We hope it‘s

exciting and fulfilling.

For a lot of us, August is a time for holidays and

family time, I hope you have something fun

planned whether you are at home or away. We

have a few ideas in this month‘s issue if you are at

home, and with this recent weather, home is a

lovely place to be! I have recently joined English

Heritage and have already discovered lots of

beautiful places close by, Brodsworth house is my

favourite so far and has a fantastic new park for

children as well as amazing cream teas!

Clumber park (national trust) has also invested in a

new adventure park, challenging enough for most 3

to 14 year olds! Two fabulous days out with lots of

open space and gorgeous scenery.

What ever you do this summer, we hope you

have a great time.

‗ACTION FOR CHILDREN‘

HOUSE-TO-HOUSE

COLLECTION

Just a reminder that the annual House-to-

House collection for what used to be

known as the National Children‘s Home

will once again be taking place during

October. We are grateful to everyone

who takes on the role of collector and

hope they will continue in future.

However, there are always a few areas

which do not get covered, so anyone who

would be willing to join us in this very

worthwhile task will be welcome; at least

five more are needed, but the more we

have, the smaller the area each person has

to cover.

Anyone willing should contact Liz Reeve:

‗Not sure? Don‘t open the door‘

South Yorkshire Police are warning homeowners not to accept offers of work on their property from

people cold calling at the door.

Rogue traders are unscrupulous cold callers, who demand high payment for shoddy services or goods or

charge for unnecessary work.

Whilst there may be some genuine traders who use the technique of calling at your door, there are

criminals who look to exploit people, usually the elderly or otherwise vulnerable, by charging extortionate

amounts of money for relatively minor, or even unnecessary jobs.

The term ‗rogue trader‘ can be somewhat confusing as the perpetrators don‘t just contravene Trading

Standards legislation, they are in fact criminals and those who they target are indeed victims of crime.

Always treat anyone calling unexpectedly at your door with suspicion. Never accept an offer of work from

an unknown caller. If they are genuine then they will be willing to leave contact details, allowing you to get

other quotes and choose the best one. Even so, you still don‘t have to listen to their offer if you don‘t

want to. The message is: ‗Not sure? Don‘t open the door!‘

These criminals are adept at what they do and profit from their crimes because many of their victims feel

too ashamed to admit that they‘ve been ‗taken in‘ and subsequently end up feeling even more vulnerable. If

you tell us about it, we can catch these people and stop them exploiting anyone else.

If you think you, or someone you know, have been a victim of a rogue trader, you can report the crime to

the police. Call us on 0114 2202020, where someone will take your call seriously.

Phone 999 if a life is at risk or a crime is in progress.

Call CrimeStoppers to give information about a crime anonymously. CrimeStoppers is an independent

charity helping to find criminals and solve crimes. The freephone number, 0800 555 111 is open 24-hours

a day, seven days a week.

Visit the ‗safety and security‘ section of the South Yorkshire Police website www.southyorks.police.uk for

further advice on ‗Callers at Your Door‘.

Staying safe from rogue traders

If someone calls at your door offering to

undertake work on your home…

You do not have to let them in

If you want to open your door then

remember to use your door chain

If you don‘t want to open your door,

inform the caller that you are not

interested and ask them to leave.

If you are interested in the caller‘s offer

then take their contact details, arrange a

later appointment when convenient to you

and inform them that you will have

someone with you when they return.

Speak to a trusted friend or relative and

ask them if they would be with you at the

arranged time.

Never accept an offer of work from an

unknown caller. If they are genuine, they

will be willing to leave contact details and

allow you to get other quotes.

If you need some work doing to your

property, do not go with the first company

or trader you meet. Obtain a number of

quotes to make sure the prices match up

and where possible, ask family or friends

for a recommendation.

A trick used by burglars is to purport to

be official from a reputable organisation,

claiming they need access to your house to

check the electrics or the water pipes etc.

They then look to steal your belongings

whilst you are distracted by their story.

Don‘t let anyone in without seeking official

ID. A genuine caller will not mind you

phoning their organisation to check that

they are who they say they are, so ask

them to wait outside whilst you make that

call. And remember, the ‗water board‘ has

not existed for a number of years, so

anyone using this explanation is lying.

full explanation of regulations you can contact

―Making the right choice‖ Choosing the right school for your child is one of the most important

decisions you will ever make as a parent. Here at Sycamore Hall we

recognise that school should not only be a place of education, but a happy, secure world where childhood

memories are made, and cherished. From the weekly spelling tests, double maths and language lessons, to

the May Day Celebrations and unique Christmas pantomime, we will ensure that your child not only

learns, but has fun and enjoyment along the way.

Our small class sizes ensure that your child is given a high degree of individual attention and is nurtured to

ensure their full potential is reached. We pride ourselves on developing a positive attitude towards

academic work, promoting concentration, self-discipline and a sense of achievement. The school has a

happy and hardworking atmosphere, and upholds traditional values such as good manners and courtesy for

others. Our school welcomes children with special needs and values all its pupils equally.

Sycamore Hall offers you an affordable independent education with moderate fees that you will find

surprising. Fees may be paid termly, monthly or weekly with generous discounts available for siblings.

The butterflies in my stomach were vigorously fluttering as I put my foot down, on

Austerfield ground, from the car and strapped my bag to my back. I tentatively walked on

the dusty path towards my friends - I was nervous because it was the first time I‘d slept on

a trip with school. Elliot H

First we went into the hundred year wood to look at habitats. Everybody was given a

sticker with an animal on it, I was a rabbit. We had to choose a good place to have a

home for our animal. Unluckily the foxes moved in next door to us, OH NO! George

At about 9.30 p.m. we put on our pyjamas and had cocoa and biscuits. Then we brushed

our teeth and went to our tents to go to sleep…..but that‘s what the teachers wanted us

to do! When we got into our tents Peter got out his pack of cards and played Go Fish.

Then we told each other ghost stories and ate our midnight feast. Finally we fell asleep at

My favourite memory was when I held a snake in the animal house. I shall never forget

Austerfield it was my favourite trip of all. I hope that the next year 4s will have a fantastic

time just like we did. I would like to say thank you to Miss Horrey and Miss Sinha for

taking us. Thank You! Amy

Biodiversity Winners

Year 3 entered a biodiversity competition and Copley Junior School came second. Four

people were especially commended for their excellent photographs. We went to Sheffield

Hallam University to get presented with our certificates. The prize for all of year3 was a

garden package (Professor the Lord Winston presented the package to us). It was very

exciting. My bones were shaking! Georgia and Melissa 3P

Summer Fair Many, many thanks for the support given by so many people to the success of our recent

summer fair. A big thank you also goes to the children in year 6 for the excellent games

that they organised. The inventiveness and quality of these never ceases to amaze. The

total raised at the event was £1007.

And finally… Many thanks to children, staff, governors and parents for their continued hard work and

wider commitment to the school and its aims. I hope that you all have a very enjoyable

and relaxing summer holiday with your children and look forward to welcoming back

existing children and the new year 3 classes on September 1st. Best wishes of course go to

our year 6 children, Mr. Henfield and Miss Hull for the best possible start in their new

schools. Mr. White

It seems ages since I wrote anything for The Arrow, mainly

because there hasn‘t been anything definite to report.

Everything seems to have been ‗in the pot‘ so to speak with very

little to show for it.

Our hardy group of conservation volunteers carry on meeting every fortnight regardless of the

weather and a Geology Walk in May, run in conjunction with DMBC‘s National Geology Week, was

quite well supported. We also enjoyed meeting quite a lot of visitors on the river bank on the

Spring Bank Holiday weekend when we had our gazebo and display up for the first time and since

then it has had an airing at the Sprotbrough Fun Run and Edlington and Warmsworth Galas. Its next

appearance will be at the Doncaster Country Fair at Cusworth Hall on the 16th August. Why don‘t

you come along and see us there.

Apart from this, ‗behind the scenes‘ work is continuing in relation to the Fish Pass and the Visitor

Centre. We are reliably informed that the Fish Pass itself will definitely happen, and some surveying

work has already taken place in readiness for it, but when it will be built is still not known. We are,

however, assured that it will be in keeping with the area. Some of the more peripheral parts of the

project may also have to be delayed as, I‘m sure we all know by now, money is less available for big

projects.

This also applies to the what, where and how of the Visitor/Education Centre. A variety of ‗whats‘

have been suggested, ie a building, a barge or a pontoon, but the ‗wheres‘ and the ‗hows‘ of such

suggestions are much more difficult to achieve.

Page 21: Aug 10, Issue 30, The Sprotbrough Arrow

21

We did a survey over the Spring Bank holiday weekend to see whether visitors thought such a thing

was needed. However, the majority of visitors were local people who had come on foot or by

bicycle and, having revised the questions, we hope to do this on a bigger scale in future. There is no

doubt that something, including toilets, would be welcome, but the question is whether some of the

needs, eg provision of information, could just as easily be fulfilled by placing leaflets at other venues

or by the use of display boards – some lateral thinking may be needed.

One prospect that may be opening up is the Earth Centre. I have been to several meetings

regarding this and, if it comes to pass, this could be an ideal spot for a visitor centre, with the ‗Park

and Float‘ scheme coming into its own and bringing Conisbrough Castle within the reach of visitors

to the Gorge. This scheme is again operating on Sundays and Bank Holidays throughout the

Summer, so we hope visitors from further afield might think of this before setting out in their cars.

A planning issue has also come my way regarding the river bridges. I am informed that the weight

limit for lorries is not going to be increased, but that improved signing is expected to be provided at

the Warmsworth end. Hopefully this will be big enough for lorry drivers to see so that they don‘t

get to the top of the hairpin bend before they realise they aren‘t going to get through!

As ever, we are always eager to have feedback so please get in touch and let us know if you have

any questions you would like to ask or points you would like to make.

Dear Reader, What beautiful weather we have been

experiencing of late! Let‘s hope it lasts for the rest of the Summer.

I cannot believe that we are already half way through the year!!! As September approaches, so does the

famous St. Leger race meeting, scheduled for 7th-11th of September. For many females this means a lite retail therapy: a new dress, hat,

shoes, handbag and jewellertly all co-ordinated to help you look your very best. This month, I offer you a few tips that will guarantee you stand out from the crowd!

August’s Beauty Quote I’ve never seen a smiling face that was

not beautiful.~ Author Unknown.

The ‗buzz word‘ at the moment for

nails is ‘Minx’ - a metallic foil that can be applied to

toe and fingers nails. Beware as there are many ‗rip off‘ products out there which do not match the magnificence and capture the colour and brilliance of the ‗Minx‘

designs. With numerous options and colours to choose from, you can complement your outfit perfectly.

If Minx isn‘t for you, then there are Bio Sculpture Gels to give colour to your nails without the fear of smudging or chipping during your day out. Alternatively, if length is

what you require, there are nail extensions, or you may prefer a manicure and pedicure with an application of coloured varnish or natural looking French polish.

Even though we are hoping

the sunshine will continue, it is always wise to pre-book your tanning treatment so that

you look beautifully bronzed in your designer outfit. Requiring only a fifteen minute appointment for a spray tan,

St. Tropez is a universally known product which gives a streak-free, even finish

that is three shades darker than your natural colour just

perfect for that special Occasion!

Race Week is as busy as Christmas for

Doncaster‘s beauty salons! Make sure that you are glamorous and stress free for your special day at the races by booking your

treatments early. Or, you could risk being the one with streaky orange legs, nail ‗pinging off‘ into a friend‘s glass of Pimms and lashes hanging half off at 12 midday

rather than 12 midnight, just because you left it too late to book your appointment

and had to do it all yourself the night before!!!

You could

complete

that polished look with a set of luxurious

lashes. There is a solution for every occasion and budget. Choose from strip ones, which will just be great for the day; individual ones, which will last up to a week; or 3D semi-permanent lashes,

which, with ‗top up‘ treatments, last for weeks.

Taking your Test Dear Readers continued,

Mr Bean was the first person to pass the driving test in 1935… fact! But it‘s not that Mr Bean, it was

Mr J Beene who paid a grand total of 37p (7d / 6p in old money) to take the test. there were no test

centres in 1935 so you had to arrange to meet the examiner somewhere like a post office, train

station or town hall. the test was suspended for the duration of World War Two and didn‘t resume

until 1 November 1946.

In 1975, candidates no longer had to demonstrate hand signals The theory test was introduced in

1996, replacing questions about the Highway Code, during the practical test candidates could book

their theory test online for the first time in December 2001 the pass rate in 1935 was 63 per cent

compared to 46 per cent in 2009.

1969 saw the first driving test set for an automatic vehicle since 1935 more than 46 million tests

have been taken

In 1935, when Leslie Hore-Belisha, became the new Transport Minister, he introduced the driving

test – first in March as a voluntary test and then it became compulsory in June. During the 1930s

safety glass was made compulsory for windscreens after terrible injuries had been caused by

accidents in cars with ordinary glass. Seat belts did not appear until the 1950s but were not made

compulsory in front seats until 1983.

in September 2003. Arm signals out of the window were withdrawn from the test in 1975 and more

modern additions to the test have included a theory test in 1996, the hazard perception section of

the theory test in 2002 and questions about vehicle safety and maintenance

Changes to the test and other safety initiatives, such as improvements to vehicles, have resulted in a

reduction in road deaths in Great Britain, which now has some of the best road safety records in

the world. In 2008 there were 34 million cars on the road and 2,538 people were killed in road

accidents

When announcing the introduction of the driving test, Leslie Hore-Belisha said, ―Driving is an art in

which those who are engaged should, in the interest of their own and of the public‘s safety; take the

greatest pains to make themselves proficient.‖

Sprotbrough Road Community Church (Methodist)

The Family Table

Once again my table has been loaded with fruit‘s, the bounty that our wonderful God has

provided. We have just had Wimbledon fortnight, the one sport I do watch on TV. We

not only have the enjoyment of the tennis but strawberries as well. YUMMY, and the

cream is just the perfect addition. Our Church has really had a feast this time, with the

1st strawberries at the Family Fun Day, the 2nd strawberries at lunch after the morning

service, and the 3rd portion at our house group with a Quiz as part of a fellowship eve-

ning. No wonder the phrase comes to mind, ‘All I have needed thy hand has provided‘.

God loves to give us pleasure and lift our spirits but let‘s not forget the other fruit He has

provided—the Fruit of His Spirit is Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faith-

fulness, Gentleness and Self Control.

We‘re enjoying a wonderful summer for a change, and we need to thank God for it and all

the other blessings he so freely gives us. When we come to His table more often, and

when we stand at the foot of the cross, we begin to really understand what Jesus did for

each one of US by shedding His blood at Calvary. We can look to Him and enjoy His pre-

cious Fruits, because the fruits of the world are only a passing moment of pleasure. It is

God‘s Spirit, NOT the things of this world that give us everlasting Love and Joy. Our

Lord Jesus is FOREVER.

‗And can it be that I should gain

An interest in the Saviours blood?

Died He for me, who caused His pain?

For me, who Him to death pursued?

Amazing love! How can it be,

That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?

‗Tis mercy all, immense and free;

For, Oh my God, it found out ME.‘

We all need His power to keep us on the

narrow path, and remembering some of the

goodness He shows us, will help our lives to

God Bless you all.

See you next month
