The Girls Advisory Council (GAC) supports API events, represents API at conferences, advises API on new programs and issues facing girls, and participates in other leadership development opportunities. In their monthly meetings, members follow a curriculum on issues facing women and girls around the world. GAC is a diverse group, with girls coming from Cherry Hill, Burlington Twp., Moorestown, Mount Laurel, Haddonfield, Camden, and from communities further away like Wall, NJ, Wallingford, PA and Wilmington, DE.

GAC has truly impacted my life in such a positive and dramatic way. I am so lucky to be a part of this organization and do things (like being on TV! what the heck!) that I never would have been able to do in another setting, and I've been able to fully be myself around a lot of girls very similar to me.

-Kayleigh Schweiker , GAC member*

All in a GAC year…

New Jersey Senator Cory Booker and Congressman Tom MacArthur visited Paulsdale on August 10, 2016, to talk with the Girls Advisory Council (GAC) about what issues they feel are important to teens in the U.S.

GAC members started their school year with a retreat in September, where they met other members and planned the new GAC year.

On October 11, 2016, 35 members of the Girls Advisory Council (and 12 parent chaperones) attended the International Day of the Girl, a girl-led conference at the United Nations. Also in October, Deisha Brahma and Kayleigh Schweiker represented GAC at the Mid-Atlantic Association of American Museums (MAAM) conference in Baltimore, MD on the panel, “Where the Girls Are: Teen Activism at a Historic Site.”

In December, girls learned about legal careers when they visited with women attorneys at Capehart & Scatchard, LLC. GAC members also collected sanitary products for women in local homeless shelters.

The New Year brought GAC alumnae back to Paulsdale for a reunion! Also in January, GAC member Anna Holemans organized Alice’s March for Equality in Philadelphia, a march for the Equal Rights Amendment.

GAC members honed their public speaking and networking skills at a workshop in February 2017.

Select members introduced honorees (while all the girls practiced their networking skills) at the Alice Paul Equality Awards in March. A week later, six members attended the Young Feminist Leaders conference in Washington, D.C. In the spring, GAC members hosted their own fundraising event, Yoga for Your Rights to raise money for a girls school in Pakistan.

API bade farewell to twelve graduating seniors with our year-end dinner in May. We sent them off with an Alice Goes to College packet they can share with new friends on their college campuses. Congratulations to Gabriella Akes, Isabel Anthony, Megha Bharadwadj, Karrie Farraghan, Anna Helmlinger, Sarah Kotch, Natalie LaRosa, Jaden Paley, McKenna Sampson, Jessica Shine, Alyssa Spate, and Katie Ward!

Girls Advisory Council’s Impact

100% of GAC members consider themselves leaders, feminists, and feel that their experience in GAC will have a life-long, positive effect in their lives. Why do we have these overwhelmingly positive evaluation results? Because by the end of the year, API provided all GAC members with the opportunity to:

Participate in engaging conferences to represent API and girls’ issues

Take workshops on public speaking, networking, and business etiquette

Earn community service hours, acquire internships, and receive recommendations

Pursue scholarship and award opportunities

Travel to the United Nations to participate in the International Day of the Girl celebration

Engage in their community by supporting other causes and earning community service hours

Connect with and receive advice from women mentors

Take fieldtrips, visit workplaces, and go to networking events

Learn about and discuss women and girls’ issues through a comprehensive curriculum

Make a difference with girl-led initiatives on issues important to girls and women

Be part of a network of girls, representing girls, in a safe space just for girls

GAC Leadership in Action 16 year-old Anna Holemans is a prime example of a GAC member making a difference. On January 19, 2017, Anna led Alice’s March for Equality women’s rights march in Philadelphia, PA. Honoring Anna’s shero Alice Paul, the march processed from City Hall to Eakins Oval, where Anna held a rally for Paul’s yet unratified Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), to guarantee women equal rights under the U.S. Constitution. In addition to inspiring other students, faculty and staff at her school, Friends Select, Anna brought together other great organizations including the Alice Paul Institute, Girl Scouts of Central and Southern NJ, the Coalition of Labor Union Women and other Quaker schools.

GAC has some of the best mentors, advisers and role models that one can have. My daughter Megha is extremely fortunate to be a part of this amazing organization. GAC made her a stronger, more confident and a wiser person, and equipped her well enough to pursue her future endeavors and make a positive difference in her community and beyond. -GAC Parent

From June 25-29, 2017, API ran the first of two sessions of APPLI: College & Careers, a four-day summer program for teen girls to explore college and career readiness through campus and workplace visits, professional development workshops and networking/mentorship events. The program served a diverse group of 22 high school girls from across the Delaware Valley. The girls learned about medical careers at Virtua Voorhees Hospital, engineering at Lockheed Martin, journalism at Burlington County Times/Calkins Media, took a Career Coach workshop at Rowan College at Burlington County, and toured the campuses at Rutgers University Camden and at the University of Pennsylvania.

Thank you for having this camp, it was truly inspiring!!! (Also the staff was awesome.) THANK YOU, I met so many amazing people, and the net-working was such a privilege.

-Maria DelPo, APPLI Class of 2017*

This past summer my almost 15 year old daughter Latavia attended your College and Careers program and I want to say thank you... she has blossomed since attending your program. She has mentioned that while she goes away next summer to her aunt's in Mississippi she wants to make sure she finds an internship and volunteer opportunities to do before and after her trip. Thanks again for making a difference in my family's life and my daughter's future, keep up the good work! - Marie Goddard, APPLI Parent, Class of 2017

APPLI: College & Careers

Session 2 of APPLI: College & Careers, from July 10-13, served 22 high school girls from economically diverse New Jersey communities. The girls learned about medical careers at Virtua Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Center in Moorestown, chemical engineering at Novartis/Sandoz in Princeton, legal careers at Capehart & Scatchard, LLC, in Mt. Laurel. They toured the campus of Rutgers University Camden and The College of New Jersey (TCNJ). In addition to their field trips to colleges and workplaces, both Session 1 and 2 girls took workshops on resume writing, college essay writing, personal finance, networking skills, and choosing the right college.

APPLI: College & Career’s Impact

Evaluations following APPLI: College & Careers, show that:

18% more girls feel that they have a good idea of what colleges they will apply to after they graduate high school

30% more believe speaking to a mentor helped them to learn about their future career of interest

11% more girls feel that they know the specific jobs they might pursue in their career interest

92% of participants believe they can be anything they choose to be in the future

Mentors Make a Difference!

On June 29 and July 13, 2017, 50 professional women attended APPLI: College & Careers at Paulsdale so that the girls could practice their newly honed networking skills in a networking and mentoring session. The women shared their stories on college degrees they pursued, skills they acquired in their professions, tasks they might accomplish in a typical day, and how their careers have changed since they graduated from college.

Lead-A-Way (LAW) is a five-part leadership development workshop series for 7th and 8th grade girls. Lead-A-Way teaches participants twelve components of leadership (e.g. positive assertiveness, communication skills, collaborative teamwork) exemplified by historic and contemporary women like equal rights activist Alice Paul, Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm, and labor rights activist Dolores Huerta. In summer 2017, we offered a week-long version of Lead-A-Way to middle and high school boys and girls in summer youth programs at Rowan College at Burlington County (RCBC).

Lead-A-Way (LAW)

8th grade girls from Burlington Twp. Middle School at Springside visited Paulsdale in December for their first session of Lead-A-Way. At Paulsdale, they learned about role model women and, after team-building

exercises, posed with Alice Paul for a group photo.

I am glad I have done this program! I have learned a lot, and I look forward to applying the traits and skills I have learned in the future. -Makayla Boxley, Lead-A-Way, Summer 2017

Lead-A-Way’s Impact

Lead-A-Way participants complete pre- and post-workshop surveys. Comparing this evaluation data with a focus group, when Lead-A-Way concluded, we found that:

10% more participants are likely to speak up in class as a result of Lead-A-Way

14% more participants are interested in taking up a leadership role in school

9% more participants are confident they can make positive changes to issues that affect themselves and their classmates

The program has made me a better person

and realize how much women affect the

world. Thank you!

-Angelina Nicolini, Lead-A-Way,

Burlington Twp. Middle School

Thanks to Alice Paul I am more

confident and proud of who

I am.

Lead-A-Way Greats!

As an African-American female in poverty and a single parent home, I

believe there are a very few opportunities for me to become an

influential leader. The Lead-a-Way program showed me that I can work

hard to fight for what I think is right and join with others who share my

beliefs. For example, me and my group picked the topic of Racism and

completed a project to raise awareness. My idea was to wear two

different colored shoes to spread the message that color doesn’t

matter but they walk the same. I felt confident enough to speak up and

give more of my ideas on what I feel we should have done. This

experience was great! -Mikayla Tucker, Lead-A-Way, Summer 2017

& Judith Glick Buckman Fund for the Future scholarship recipient

A leader is someone who can access everyone's skills and properly

include them in their endeavors.

-Talia Higgins, Lead-A-Way, Summer 2017

In summer 2017, boys joined the girls in two sessions of Lead-A-Way held at Rowan College at Burlington County’s Mount Laurel campus.

Paulsdale is now open to the public for drop-in tours Tuesday-Friday afternoons and on the second Saturdays of March-November. Guided and group tours are available by appointment throughout the year. Alice Paul: New Jersey’s Heroine for Equality: This presentation about Alice Paul's life and work reaches thousands of New Jerseyans.

Alice Paul Archives: The Alice Paul Archives includes documents, photographs, books, and objects from Alice Paul’s life. In 2015, individual donations and a grant from the NJ Council for the Humanities established the Amelia Roberts Fry Collection in the Alice Paul Archives. The Fry Collection captures the seldom seen personal side of Paul, from her school classmates’ memories of her, to letters, transcripts and articles from her early years as an agitator. The archives are an invaluable resource for scholars as well as middle and high school National History Day participants. Special Programs & Events: API offers public lectures, performances and workshops, often collaborating with other organizations and historians to celebrate significant dates in women’s and New Jersey history. Annually, API celebrates Alice Paul’s birthday in January, Women’s History Month in March and Women’s Equality Day in August.

The Alice Paul: In Pursuit of Ordinary Equality exhibit includes photographs, quotes and historical narrative on wall panels

throughout the first floor of Paulsdale.

The Activism Training Day in March 2017 brought women and men to learn how to affect public policy in support of women’s rights and to meet representatives from local women’s organizations.
