Idle bowling thoughts.

...Keep reminding everyone by

every means of communications

that Kelly Kulick deserves serious

consideration as the female athlete

of the Year. What she has done in

2010 never has been matched by

any female in any sport in any

time.

...Don't look now, but that next

year you're always talking about is

here. The official USBC season

started on August first. And you

know what? Think about getting a

new bowling ball. That always

brings on a new altitude.

…The official paintings of the

women voted to the USBC Hall of

Fame are among the most beautiful

tributes ever created for any Hall.

The bronze busts of the men are

fine too. That's why a way must be

found to display them, whether it is

in a ceiling, wall niche, a hallway

or even a sidewalk or a floor.

People, from day one, are what

Halls of Fame are all about.

..."We need to renew our enthusi-

asm for introducing youngsters to

bowling and project the attitude

that it is the greatest game in the

world." Those were the long ago

words of former American Junior

Bowling Congress manager, the

late Chuck Hall. His sentiments

ring just as true and sure now as

then.

...Haven't heard too much talk

about bowling in the Olympics

even though international bowling

is gaining more than its share of

attention. Bowling has dedicated

much time, money and the efforts

of some of our greatest minds for

many years and limited progress

has been made. Bowling has so

much to offer that someday its full

worth will be realized by some of

the right officials in the right

places.

...Mike Scroggins has been a star

in recent years and a more than

capable full time pro for more than

two decades, and labored almost

unnoticed for most of them. But,

with his total titles nearing double

figures and his TV appearances

making him an almost household

name I figure the soft spoken

Amarillo, Texas product is not only

a serious consideration but I con-

sider him a good bet to make the

PBA Hall of Fame.

Scroggins is not spectacular in

form, style and actions but is more

like a master mechanic who has the

tools to do a job and does it without

much flair or fanfare, making him

a hero of many of the solid league

bowlers who perform the same

way.

...The main advice top senior

pros give to their amateur league

counterparts is not to fear change,

and particularly, not to hesitate to

go to an easier approach and a

lighter ball. A lighter ball affords

more control with little or no loss

in pin carrying power. Don't be a

macho bowler, be sensible bowler.

...Almost every bowling center

seems to be a hub for selling raffle

tickets, cookies, cosmetics, insur-

ance, politicians and a host of other

things. What we need to be sold

more in bowling centers is bowing.

…Treat your bowling ball with

respect by protecting it from

extreme cold or heat. Treat your

bowling hand and arm the same

way.

...Start off every game you bowl

with a smile and no preconceived

notions. Human nature will dictate

your later actions.

2 SPORTS REPORTER August 18 - 24, 2010

Ray Zellner, Phillipsburg, and Mike Vash, Easton PA, are bowling

team-mates who like to compete against each other as well as against

opposing teams. But they had no idea how far that would go four weeks

ago in the Tuesday Doubles League at Blue Valley Lanes, Wind Gap, PA.

Both are strong bowlers averaging in the 200s. Ray started the night

with a 246. Mike thinks his first game was in the 190s.

Then the second game started. It was strike, strike, strike for both men.

Ray was leadoff and got to the tenth frame. “On my eleventh ball my foot

fell and I had to kick out so I wouldn’t foul.” But the shot carried, as did

his twelfth and final ball for his eighth sanctioned 300 game. Then Mike

had to finish his game. He wasn’t nervous for himself, but didn’t want to

let his team mate down. “I was happy for him (getting a 300). Then we

said, “Let’s do it.” Vash carried all his hits and posted his fifth sanctioned

300 game. The men posted a perfect doubles game of 600.

Ray Zellner, 40, has been bowling for 22 years. For his latest feat he

used an Ebonite Black Widow. He said, “I was more nervous for Mike.

I told him I don’t know how I would have felt if I had let him down, and

he said he thought the same thing about his game. I was told it was only

the 36th time ever that a doubles team did it ever.” Bowl.com indicates

it has been done (sanctioned) 41 times, and now 42. He has chosen to

add to his collection of 300 rings. He has a son, Brandon, 16.

Mike Vash, 36, opted to get a plaque from the USBC. He is a cook at

Warren Hospital.

Perhaps it is fortunate that the system of lane inspections has changed.

“Back in the day” after an honor score was rolled, a lane inspector not

only checked the lane conditions, but also the pins and the bowling balls

that had been used.

Morris County’s Jimmy Mack and Paul Petescola rolled a 600 game at

Madison Plaza Lanes in the late 1960s. It was Mack’s tenth and he said

he was more nervous for that game than his other nine because he didn’t

want to let Petescola down. But the score was rejected. Mack said, “How

often does this (600) happen?” How unfortunate.

The official results of the MCUSBAWBA tournament are: Top finish-

ers are: Team Gross: Oakwood Lanes, Jacqueline Lance, Mary Pearson,

Susan Messerle, Joan Mack (2887). Doubles gross: Rubon Berardi,

Dawn Palmer (1511). Doubles Net: Nichole Spratford and Valarie

Johannessen (1328). Singles Gross: Joan Mack, 793. Singles Net:

Nichole Spratford, 730. All Events: Class A, Jacqui Reese, 2107. Class

B: Joan Mack, 1772. Class C: Karen Shaw, 1521.

Oh yeah the Team Net winners, No Respect, captained by Valarie

Johannessen, who led Nichole Spratford, Shana Hebert, Lies’l Apgar

and herself to her team’s eighth county victory. They also won the team

scratch division in Bergen County. Val bowled with Spratford and Cara

Lukosius and Jennifer Russo to take the women’s state team net title

with 2596 this year. That team’s name is “Can’t Get Better.”

Congratulations!

The Bowling World Cup has been held twice before in France. The

first occasion was in the early days, in 1967, at the Bowling de Paris, and

the event returned in 1992, to Le mans, when the winners were the leg-

endary Paeng Nepomuceno of the Philippines and Germany's Martina

Beckel. France has won the title just once when Philippe Dubois won in

1979 in Bangkok, Thailand. The winners last year, when the tournament

was held in Melaka, Malaysia, were Choi Yong-Kyu of Korea and

Caroline LaGrange of Canada.
