We know this from our own lives; not only in the past but again and again the gospel challenges us to abandon sinful ways and embrace the way of life. We live in a society that does not val- ue life, yet we are called to prize life supremely and to take stands against death, whether abortion, capi- tal punishment, euthanasia, or economic oppression. We may be hated or ridiculed for espousing such causes. We need to find the appropriate ways so that our message of life can be heard. It is not enough to shout out our cause obnoxiously. It is not permitted to use the tactics of violence and threat in the cause of life. But let us be on fire, like Jesus, to endure the cross for the joy set before us. A veces sabe a hiel. 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Lectura, as de Hoy Jeremias 38:4-6, 8-10

Salmo 39:2, 3, 4, 18 Hebreos 12:1-4 Lucas 12:49-53

The first two readings today show us another side of

evangelization: the role of the martyr. A martyr is a

witness to God’s word. That witness is often met by

the world’s hostility and rejection. Jeremiah is fol-

lowing his commission from God to speak truth to

Israel. But it is a word Israel does not want to hear;

and Jeremiah is cast into the cistern. Jesus also suf-

fers such rejection. Although we have the good

news, the gospel to announce; such good news is not

always easy or nice to hear. We know this from our

own lives; not only in the past but again and again

the gospel challenges us to abandon sinful ways and

embrace the way of life. Proclaiming the good news

often reveals the tragedy of our situation, and we do

not like having our misery so exposed.

We too are called to be witnesses. And we must

sometimes witness to unpopular causes. The gospel

does not always go down like honey. Sometimes it

tastes of gall. We live in a society that does not val-

ue life, yet we are called to prize life supremely and

to take stands against death, whether abortion, capi-

tal punishment, euthanasia, or economic oppression.

We may be hated or ridiculed for espousing such

causes. We need to find the appropriate ways so

that our message of life can be heard. It is not

enough to shout out our cause obnoxiously. It is not

permitted to use the tactics of violence and threat in

the cause of life. But let us be on fire, like Jesus, to

endure the cross for the joy set before us.

Pero es una palabra que Israel no quiere escuchar;

y Jeremías es arrojado a la cisterna. Jesús también sufre tal

rechazo. Aunque tenemos las buenas noticias que anunciar;

tan expuesta.

Nosotros también estamos llamados a ser testigos. Y a veces

debemos ser testigos de causas impopulares. El evangelio no

siempre baja como la miel. A veces sabe a hiel.

gritar nuestra causa desagradablemente.

The theme for the 15th Eucharistic Congress of the Diocese of Charlotte has been announced by Bishop Peter Jugis:

“Stay With Us, Lord.

”The Holy Eucharist completes Christian initiation … The Eucharist is the efficacious sign and sublime cause of that

communion in the divine life and that unity of the People of God by which the Church is kept in being.

The origins of the Eucharist are found in the Last Supper that Jesus shared with his Apostles. “In order to leave them a pledge of this love, in order never to depart from his own and to make them sharers in his Passover, he instituted the

Eucharist as the memorial of his death and Resurrection and commanded his apostles to celebrate it until his return; ‘thereby he constituted them priests of the New Testa-

ment’” (ccc.no 1337)

The 2019 theme is taken from the Gospel book of Luke (24:29), telling of two dejected disciples leaving Jerusalem

after Christ was crucified and died.

At www.goeucharist.com: Get information about the up-coming Eucharistic Congress, in English and Spanish

Thank you to those who represented us. This year we hope more people will be there to join the Bishop and the Church in the Diocese of Charlotte to celebrate and pray adoring Jesus Christ physically present in the Eucharist.
