President’s ColumnDavid Stone

So far, the summer has been good to our region. I’m pleased to report that, thanks to your generosity, our two pancake breakfasts and our 45th Anniversary celebration

brought in gross receipts of more than $12,000 for our two charities. Attendance has been strong at our events, including our July 4th Camarillo Airport breakfast meeting with more than 100 members and guests in attendance.

In early July, we received word from the Parade that our region took first place in the PCA newsletter competition in Class IV, for regions with less than 800 members. Congratulations go to former Der Auspuff Editor Janice Herndon and her staff of volunteers for a job well done.

Also at the Parade, it was announced that our region placed second in the PCA national Public Service Award competition for 2008. We can all be very proud of the good work done last year to support a variety of worthy causes. The honor comes with a $1000 cash award for the region from PCA.

Our long-awaited on-line Goodie Store is now up and operational. You’ll find a link on our website that opens up a store full of quality clothing items you can order with or without the region logo. A portion of the proceeds from each sale returns to the region, so let’s go shopping!

There are many opportunities for Porsche fun this summer. Hope to see you soon.

At the 54th Annual Porsche Parade last month PCA announced the results of

the National Newsletter Contest. I am very happy to announce that Der Auspuff was awarded first place in Class IV, best-ing nine other entries from around the country. This is no small achievement as Class IV is the second largest category within the competition.

My predecessor as Editor, Janice Herndon, is to be congratu-lated for her vision and hard work in creating the issues that were submitted for judging. Compiling our monthly magazine takes time, a commodity Janice had precious little of during her tenure as editor. Giving “multi-tasking” a whole new spin, Janice managed to publish monthly masterpieces for our region while often working 60+ hour weeks in her “paying job.”

Congratulations Janice! All of us in the Santa Barbara Region are proud of you for making us “number one.”

As promised, the all newOnline Goodie Store is open for business, 24/7.Just point your browser to pcasb.webstore.us.com/to shop a large selectionof logo merchandise.Support the club...shop the new Online Goodie Store!

Members were reminded about the Unity Shoppe Tour following the Santa Barbara Breakfast on July 11. All are invited to tour the Unity Shoppe facilities in Santa Barbara to gain a greater understanding of what this fine organization accomplishes every day. Executive Director Tom Reed will personally guide us and refreshments will be served.

Our region is once again affiliated with the popular Ventura Show coming to the Ventura County Fairgrounds October 3 & 4. Volunteers are needed to help out with parking and main gate registration. Shifts last only three hours and will net you free admission to the show and a commemorative t-shirt. If you’d like to help, contact Bill Sluiter.

After several years administering our website, Anuroop and Rashi Gupta are returning to their native India. We are most appreciative of their dedicated service to our region, but must now find their replacement. Any interested party with web design/hosting experience may contact any board member to volunteer.

And finally, Rusnak Porsche’s Internet Manager, Adam Chirchick has joined the region. As a new PCA/SBR member, Adam was proud to park his black 1993 911 Cabriolet on the Way-Point’s lawn. Welcome aboard, Adam. =

The Fourth of July holiday started early for 105 folks arriving at the Way-Point in 58 Porsches. A special guest awaited – Porsche 917 chassis #004, courtesy of Kundensport

Porsche Restoration of Camarillo. Owner Ed Palmer, along with Hans Lapin and Mike Schatz were nice enough to display this heritage racing machine – and they promised to return next month with the body in place before heading to the Monterey

Historics.SBR member Dennis

Carpenter and his wife, Shirley, were introduced. Dennis, who is a Chief Deputy with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, recently kicked off his campaign to be elected Sheriff. We wish him the best.

Ted Lighthizer and Doreen Pankow filled in for vacationing Membership Chair Janice Herndon, signing

in the arriving members and guests. They also spoke about the upcoming Gimmick Rally which they are organizing for September 26.

President Dave Stone announced that gross proceeds from the 45th Anniversary Party and our two June Pancake Breakfasts totaled more than $12,000. We gave ourselves a well-deserved round of applause.

Activities Co-Chair Oscar Briones outlined several upcoming events including the Progressive Dinner, the pre-concours Detail Clinic, and the Concours, itself, set for October 12 at Santa Barbara City College.

Sixty-eight members and guests arrived on Stearns Wharf in 47 Porsches to kick off a beautiful summer weekend. President Dave Stone welcomed the crowd and

congratulated our region on its excellent showing at the recent Porsche Parade in Colorado. Der Auspuff won first place in Class IV in the national newsletter competition and our region finished second overall in our charity presentation for 2008. Two terrific accolades for all of us to enjoy.

Nadine Tracy, filling in for vacationing Janice Herndon, welcomed the new members, and the guests of current members. Oscar Briones outlined the upcoming activities, including the Santa Barbara Autocross on August 2, the Progressive Dinner on August 22, the Detail Clinic September 12, and the rescheduled Camarillo Autocross, now set for September 13.

The Goodie Store was offering copies of Burt Misevic’s “45th Anniversary Book” along with a fresh supply of the popular SBR Grille Badges. Additionally, interior-mount window stickers with the SBR logo are a new item also now available.

Joe Carastro gave a brief update on the SBR members who attended the Porsche Parade in Keystone, CO. Sounded like everyone had a great time. Joe highly recommended the parade for an event not to be missed. Next year’s gathering will be just outside Chicago in early July.

The meeting was adjourned and quite a sizeable group lined up to caravan up State Street for a guided tour of The Unity Shoppe. =

Tom Reed

Tom Reed, Executive Director of Santa Barbara’s Unity Shoppe, invited the Santa Barbara Region to tour his facilities several weeks ago. Tom wanted our members to

get a better feel for what Unity Shoppe’s mission and business model were all about. Following our breakfast meeting, 31 Porsches lined up for the quick trip up State Street to Unity Shoppe’s headquarters. Cox Communications filmed the impromptu Porsche Parade for use in Unity Shoppe’s annual telethon later this year. We got a lot of “thumbs up” from the appreciative tourists in downtown Santa Barbara.

Unity Shoppe provides families in

need with a “shopping experience,” rather than a handout. As Tom explained during our tour, families schedule appointments to visit the facility. When they arrive they actually “shop” from area-to-area, picking out the things they need.

The parents become the heroes in their childrens’ eyes as they enter the “Pirate’s Cove.” They register at the “Black Pearl” pirate ship, and begin their shopping in the “Stone Fire House” (the soup department).

Next stop is the “Bank of Unityville” (canned veggies), followed by the “Old West General Store” (bean department), “Lil Ol’School House” (canned meat), and “Old World Market” (vegetables and frozen meat).

The entire facility is decorated almost like a theme park. Colorful artwork and displays of toys are everywhere. It’s a warm and inviting atmosphere in which families are made to feel welcome and appreciated.

Unity Shoppe’s unique business model allows clients to choose through a “shopping experience” the things they actually need and want, rather than though the arbitrary delivery of unwanted food or merchandise. This basic difference in charitible giving retains dignity and makes for far more efficient use of valuable resources. It’s a model being copied by other organizations around the country.

Tom Reed and Barbara Tellefson, who assisted Tom on our behind-the-scenes tour, have an obvious passion for what they’re doing, and it’s a big part of what makes Unity Shoppe work.

The more than 40 SBR members who made the trip now have a much better understanding of the excellent work Unity Shoppe does for the Santa Barbara community. And we’re happy to be able to provide some support for their efforts in designating them as one of our official charities for 2009. =

We arrived at Keystone on Sunday after a delightful drive from Camarillo and spent the day

getting established and rested in our fabulous two-bedroom condo. It was a pleasure for Marge and me to travel with Lynn and Evonne Kuchera. Great road stories! Well, carrying the baggage up three flights with the altitude being near 9,800 feet was a feat. I don’t think any one of us managed to get acclimated to the altitude the whole week.

Monday, June 29 was Parade registration day. We established our volunteer assignments, made banquet arrangements and got briefed for our planned events. The Welcome Party Monday evening brought us together the first night. It was great to see SBR members for a beer and travel chit-chat. Included were Carolyn Ewbank, Anita Banke, Joe and Nancy Carastro, Lynn and Evonne Kuchera, Joe and Kathy Schneider and Marge and I.

Tuesday the Concours was held at the resort golf course amidst snow-capped mountains, blue skies and billowing white clouds. Wow! After lunch we broke away from the concours to receive a little training to work a rally

checkpoint. We next attended the Parade Art Show Reception and Awards. Yours truly managed to win first place in the amateur painting category.

Tuesday evening was open dining, so some of our Santa Barbara Region

members gathered in the nearby town of Dillon for a casual dinner.

We were up early on Wednesday to work Checkpoint 2 for the TSD Rally located about 40 miles out near Leadville (altitude 12,000 feet!). The CP team was

great, but the clocks were not reliable. We managed to survive, and it was a good day.

We returned from the rally early for a lakeside lunch and joined in the Parade Ice Cream Social. While enjoying the treats, we viewed

one of the Parade events for kids, the Radio Control Car Competition. There must have been nearly 30 entries having a great time. All future Porsche drivers!

Wednesday night was the Porsche AG/PCNA Concours Banquet. The presentation stage was backed up by two huge projection screens facing the audience of approximately 1500 members and guests. A special recognition was presented to Betty Jo Turner on the occasion of her 40th year as the editor of Porsche Panorama. The tribute included a video of Betty Jo’s life and her many contributions to PCA. The National Newsletter Awards were presented and Santa Barbara Region’s Der Auspuff won first in Class IV, again!

The Concours Banquet was Porsche AG’s and PCNA’s night to greet PCA and

to convey their thoughts regarding Porsche and the Parade. Then came the big surprise. During their presentation the side door opened, and they drove in the new 4-door Porsche Panamera. The example shown (above) is one of two cars in the U.S. for long-lead press tours. PCA was the first of the public to see the car. It was a great PR coup by Porsche.

We spent half of Thursday sightseeing and walking galleries in nearby Frisco. That evening, we joined other regional members at the Zone 8 Party at the resort, which included great hors d’oeuvres and an unforgettable speech by the best Zone Rep in PCA, Michael Dolphin. Parade activity in the evening was a dessert affair with the presentation of the rally awards. Joe Schneider and Joe Carastro teamed up and won fourth place in the tough expert class with a very low score.

Friday was a day for the Tech Seminars, 5K Run/Walk, Golf Tournament and such. The Parade gathering for the evening was a Mexican fiesta and the presentation of the Autocross awards.

Saturday was the last day of this Porsche Parade and the day the Tech Quiz was held. Joe Carastro and Joe Schneider placed first and second respectively in their class. The luncheon for all the volunteer workers was held with door prizes aplenty, including a number of sets of tires. The Parade ended at the Victory Banquet with nearly 700 in attendance. The awards for successful region 2008 charity programs were presented, and SBR won 2nd Place and a check for $1,000.

Getting home, we breezed through particularly scenic drives west of Keystone and mostly in southern Utah. Think driving 70 miles with no services on a two-lane road a few feet from the Colorado River in the canyon, and then breakfasting outdoors very close to grazing deer (material for another article). The scenery, both the mountains and the clouds, was wonderful. The Porsche Parade was fun and seemingly everyone had a good time. Consider taking in the next Porsche Parade...with good friends, and in a turbo, if possible. =

Dave also announced that our region came in second place in the PCA Public Service Award competition for 2008. Carolyn Ewbank accepted the award presented at the Parade on behalf of the region.

Old Business: The 45th Anniversary Celebration was a huge success with members enjoying a lovely brunch, silent auction and raffle, and an afternoon of camaraderie. The on-line Goodie Store is up and running so check it out. Thank you James Oldham for stepping up and becoming our new Archives Custodian. A bar code reader is being purchased and will be in use at the next autocross.

New Business: Our website is in need of a new webmaster. Anyone wishing to help, please contact Dave Stone. A discussion was held about our bylaws and the possible need for minor corrections and updates. Decisions were deferred until the next meeting. Again congratulations to our region, members, and volunteers for first place award for best 2008 newsletter in our division and second place in the PCA Public Service Award competition for 2008.

The August board meeting will be held at Santa Barbara Auto Group and the September meeting will be at Rusnak/Westlake.

Meeting adjourned at 8:50pm.

Wanting to be the first ones on the scene and greet participants, event sponsors Randy and Sue Kinsling left sunny Somis to drive

into the marine layered Ventura Golden China parking lot. Oscar and Toni Briones were already there, with waivers in hand and smiling faces. After we collected the activity fees and participant autographs, 19 Porsches and 32 club members were on their way with Nicolas Liakas in the lead.

We followed Highway 101 to Highway 33 through Ojai, where the sun broke through for the 92 miles to the town of Taft. It was a beautiful and challenging drive. The week before there had been time delay caused by rock slides, which had been fortunately cleared in time for the drive. With turns and tunnels we climbed to the 5160’ summit of Pine Mountain. (Dan is it legal to drive with your knees while taking pictures?) After the lower “S” curves we stopped to regroup at the CA Forestry Fire Station. Nick reported he was having trouble with his new rear tires slipping.

We arrived at the museum just before noon and were greeted by our docent Agnes Hardt. She said in the mid 1920s over 7000 wooden derricks covered the landscape from Sunset (Southeast of Maricopa), through the Midway Valley, the Elk Hills to McKittrick and Reward, a distance of approximately 21 miles in Southwest Kern County. It was indeed a veritable forest of derricks. By the late sixties all the derricks except two were gone. In 1974, Jameson #17 was scheduled to be torn down, too. The local American Association of University Women, and some dedicated people, organized and with the Jameson Company donating the

derrick and three acres of land, the West Kern Oil Museum, Inc. was born. Today that original wooden

derrick standing over its original well, with all its cable tools intact, is a part of the Museum which has grown to eight acres. Agnes had prepared lemonade, ice tea, punch and a large, nicely air-conditioned meeting room

where we had our picnic lunches. The temperature outside was approaching 110 degrees, but it was a “dry heat.” However, hot is still hot.

When we finished lunch in the banquet room, Randy welcomed everyone, and Nick acknowledged

guests of Bill Wilson and Sharan Fatemi. Gary Harbor brought his son, Tarik. Brian Rubino’s son, Chris Rubino, was on leave from Naval

service on the SS21 Seawolf, a nuclear attack submarine.

We were then introduced to Bob Foreman, the museum oil field expert. Bob had spent his 38-year career working for Chevron in the Taft area. He was a gusher of knowledge on all aspects of the oil industry, and he regaled the audience with stories and jokes about his experiences. Bob showed the group the various pieces of oil field equipment and how they worked. The museum is on a former drill site with a restored

wooden oil derrick, the Jameson #17, bunk houses and dining facilities. Several group pictures were taken in front of the historical oil derrick. Nick wanted to take a few pictures of some of the Porsches in front of the derrick as well, but thought better of it when Bob said during the restoration, the old derrick fell over and scattered nails all over the grounds.

The area has three Giant Fields, a giant being defined as a field with one billion barrels or more. Oil has been pumped

since 1900 and Taft was a boom town in

1918. At one time there were as many as 7,000 working wells. All the wood for the derricks and buildings had to come from the Pacific Northwest by train, and Taft became a very busy rail head. Since oilfield workers had no reliable transportation, many villages sprang up around the sites of the various oil company drill sites. During the boom as many as 35,000 oil workers were employed in the area. Some of the companies that drilled the oil leases were Union 76, Standard Oil, Mobil, Texaco and several other less familiar names. For many years the area known as Elk Hills was a Naval oil reserve but has since been sold to Occidental who now operates the lease. Occidental has purchased many older proven producing fields as part of the company’s current business model.

In the early years, oil was found near the surface, as shallow as 60 feet. There is also an area with seepage along the same lines as the La Brea Tar pit in Los Angeles with many of the same animal fossils present. Some of the fossils found in the Taft area are on display at the La Brea Museum. Even the local people

are not very aware of the seepage area and the fossil remains. Agnes told us it is estimated that about half of the field has been pumped out in the past 100 years. The oil remaining is very heavy and hard to recover. Alternate methods of extraction are water flooding and steam injection. The steam method has been the most successful, and now wells are drilled and steam is continuously forced down in the area of the oil. The steam loosens the heavy oil so it can be pumped to the surface.

The main museum building had many interesting historical exhibits – “a work in progress” says Agnes, portraying life during the boom period. The cool atmosphere inside was a welcome respite from the soaring outside temperature. An enjoyable day was had by all, and we learned there is much more to oil than what comes out of a can. =

Gimmick Rally and Catered BBQ Lunch Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009

This rally is a test of smarts and deductive abilities, not speed or driving techniques. You and your navigator will be given a list of clues or questions to answer as you drive the route and observe the many sights and signs along the drive. This year’s route begins in Agoura Hills and heads south up and over the hills of Malibu, then along the coastline via Hwy 1 to our final destination, Arroyo Verde Park in Ventura. The Arroyo Verde Park is very large and well shaded and it’s where we will be treated to a delicious lunch of barbecued tri-tip and chicken with all the fixings! We’ll be using the same catering folks who cooked for the Lake Casitas Poker Run & BBQ in 2008.

For even more enjoyment, there will be a podium celebration with prizes for the top three players. Prizes are being provided graciously by Performance Products/Automotion.com, a long time supporter and advertiser in “Der Auspuff.” Performance Products/Automotion.com is an excellent source for OEM and aftermarket performance parts and accessories for Porsche vehicles. A blast from the past, as the saying goes. The R.U.F.-ians visited and toured the Autry Museum of the

American West on June 18, 2009 and relived some of their fondest childhood memories. Twenty-one adults and two grandchildren formed the group that started its journey in Westlake Village and traveled to Los Angeles’ Griffith Park.

The Museum of the American West, formerly known as the Museum of Western Heritage, was co-founded by Gene and Jackie Autry and Monte and Joanne Hale. With the opening of the Museum in 1988, Gene Autry realized his dream “to build a museum which would exhibit and interpret the heritage of the West and show how it influenced America and the world.”

Mr. Autry was a legendary recording and movie star whose illustrious career spanned some 60 years in the entertainment industry. He was also a broadcast executive and major-league baseball owner.

The Autry National Center celebrates the American West through three important institutions: the Museum of the American West, the Southwest Museum of the American Indian, and the Institute for the Study of the American West. The Autry was established in 2003 following the merger of the Southwest Museum, the Women of the West Museum, and the Museum of the American West (formerly the Autry Museum of Western Heritage). Through innovative exhibitions, a broad range of programs, and an extensive collection of art and artifacts, the Autry National Center explores the distinct

stories and interactions of cultures and peoples, and their impact on the complex, evolving history of the American West.

The exhibits brought back many memories. Items on display included costumes worn by Western movie stars, saddles, guns, household items and gambling hall paraphernalia. Each evoked images of good guys chasing bad guys, guitars being played around campfires, singing cowboys and stampeding cattle. (How many of us spent our Saturday afternoons at the movies watching our heroes fight for honor, justice and truth?) There were numerous photographs of famous scenes from classic Westerns, a few showcasing future big-name stars such as Robert Mitchum, who became famous in films-noir years later.

Other halls contained magnificent artwork depicting life on the range and the travail of Native Americans. Sculptures, including a Remington, further

punctuated the difficulties of life in the west. In one room, we were allowed to wear clothing that would have been typical of Chinese immigrant laborers. The hall that showcased the collection of Colt manufactured firearms caught everyone’s attention. There were rifles spanning 200 years, pistols

with carved ivory handles (it is now illegal to use ivory in this manner), and Gatling guns. American bison and longhorn cattle were preserved so as to present them in their life-size stature.

There was even a reconstructed jail. The two grandchildren that accompanied us could not resist standing behind the bars as if they were prisoners. The two “offenders” were Gabrielle Shipley, granddaughter of Donn and Kathy Shipley, and Caitlyn Chermela, granddaughter

of Nick and Olga Liakas. (Gabrielle was the cover girl in a 2003 Der Auspuff that reported on that year’s Ventura Show.) The Shipley clan also included Mark, Glen and Kristin.

We had another special guest join the group this day. Kent Bodin made the trip, his first adventure with R.U.F. He enjoyed the outing so much that he is considering early retirement from the Ventura County District Attorney’s office so he may

become a full-fledged member of R.U.F.The docent-led tour ended at 12:45,

just in time for lunch at the museum’s café. A long table was reserved for us, and sandwiches, soup, salad and cookies awaited. As usual, the conversation was lively among good friends. By 2:00 p.m., most of our group returned to the museum for viewing of exhibits that were not included in the morning tour. Of special interest was the new, but temporary, collection of art and artifacts showcasing Yosemite National Park.

After all was said and done, the R.U.F.-ians had enjoyed another wonderful excursion. =

First, the legal disclaimers: I am not dumb. I am not reckless. I am not cheap (well, maybe just a little).

Now, the background. Olga and I took part in the region’s Memorial Weekend tour of California’s Gold Country. We extended our trip to vacation at Squaw Valley and Lake Tahoe. Upon our return, new rear tires were needed for our 2001 996 twin turbo. The worn set was acquired in June 2007 and 15,000 miles later there was no tread left on the Continental Sport Contact 2. The front Contis still had about 3,000 miles left on them.

I called Dean Pelegrino at California Tire Company in Newbury Park. Dean has advertised in Der Auspuff for many years and has been a supporter of our club. He informed me that the price of the 295/30/ZR18s had increased by 25% since my last purchase. Outrageous, I thought, so I inquired about other brands (not such a good idea according to Dean). This was the beginning of a big mistake, all of my own making.

I decided to purchase a brand other than Continental at a saving of almost 50%. Great looking tread pattern, good reviews, etc., but the tread design and composition were very different from the Contis still mounted on the front two wheels. I concluded that as long as the axle had the same tire on both sides, it would not affect the performance of the turbo. This was a continuation of my big mistake.

As I drove home after the installation, I felt a little rear-end sway, sort of like body surfing a small wave. I quickly fooled myself into thinking that this would fix itself once the brand new tires had a little wear on them. This was a further continuation of the big mistake.

The next true driving experience came on June 27 when I joined other region members for the tour to the West Kern Oil Museum in Taft. Driving along the S-curves and elevation changes on the Maricopa Highway (Hwy 33) between Ojai and Lockwood Valley, I steered through a (hopefully) once-in-a-lifetime event.

At the very first tight turn, the rear of the car swung out and the well-regarded Porsche Stability Management System (PSM) took over. The effect was that the electronics engaged the brakes and steering and the engine revs. This was at first startling and challenging as it altered my perceptions and intuition as to what needed to be done to stay on the road.

The computerized driving was actuated numerous times on the ascent over and then the descent from Mt. Pinos. At each occasion, at each turn, I would temporarily and involuntarily cede control of the car to the computer, and extra caution had to be exercised in maintaining slower speeds than those previously attained while traveling on this road. Trust me, this is not a sensation one should casually explore. Momentarily losing control to a computer has many implications, not the least of which is concern for your sanity and safety.

PSM provides a tantalizing thrill. All of your senses are engaged in rapid response to what is occurring. You hear a strange sound emanating from the rear wheels. The brake pedal vibrates and exhibits a pulsating sound. The steering wheel maneuvers the vehicle without your input. The dashboard lights up with warning lights and messages, and the taste that arrives in your mouth from your stomach leaves you very uneasy. All this and more assault as your efforts to steer out of danger are overruled

by the electronics. However, when the initial panic subsides, you realize that the intrusion has indeed provided an extra margin of safety, as advertised, and has prevented a potentially bigger and more dangerous skid. PSM keeps you safe!

By the time we reached the California Forestry Fire Station at the junction for Lockwood Valley (the designated regrouping area), my stomach ached and my heart pounded. Several fellow travelers suggested the disengagement of the PSM system, to which I adhered, but the roads ahead were mostly flat and straight and there was no further repetition of the PSM syndrome. For the return trip home, we traveled south on I-5 and I was escorted by a handful of friends just in case a need arose for assistance.

I contacted Dean first thing Monday morning, and he was very responsive and responsible. He immediately offered a full refund and replacement. This time, I accepted his advice and counsel and went for the Contis, a decision late in coming on my part. Problem solved. All is now well.

The potential saving of 50% of the price for tires proved unwise, and unsafe at any speed. Foolish, but wiser now; seemingly little things can make a big difference in one’s driving pleasure. =

Challenging The PSM System...Or, A Lesson In How Not To Buy Tires

By Nicolas Liakas

From the Owner’s Manual - Porsche Stability ManagementPSM is switched on automatically every time you start the engine.

Sensors at the wheels, brakes, steering system and engine continuously mea-sure: speed, steering angle, lateral ac-celeration, rate of turn about the vertical axis, and brake pressure.

PSM uses these values to determine the direction of travel desired by the driver.

PSM intervenes and corrects the course if the actual direction of motion deviates from the desired course (steering wheel position): It brakes individual wheels as needed. In addition, the engine power may be manipulated in order to stabilize the vehicle.
