PORSCHE 918 SPYDER BEATS OWN BENCHMARK VALUES- Final tuning measures for Porsche plug-in hybrid super sports car confirms definitive performance

- Acceleration from 0 - 62 mph achieved in 2.6 secs; 0 - 186 mph in under 20 secs

- Ground-breaking 918 Spyder features a V8 petrol engine and two electric motors to deliver 887 hp combined

- Outstanding breadth of performance includes capability to accelerate from 0 - 62 mph under electric power alone in 6.2 seconds, and return up to 94 mpg and 70 g/km CO2

Shortly before delivery of the first customer vehicles, the Porsche 918 Spyder is beating its own benchmark values. Marking the success of the final tuning measures, the super sports car from Stuttgart is now clearly the fastest ever road-going Porsche. With the weight-optimised ‘Weissach’ package fitted, the 918 Spyder accelerates from zero to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 2.6 seconds (-0.2 seconds quicker than previously), from zero to 124 mph (200 km/h) in 7.2 seconds (-0.5 seconds), and passes the 186 mph (300 km/h) mark after 19.9 seconds (-2.1 seconds).

Dr. Frank-Steffen Walliser, Senior Vice President 918 Spyder programme, highlights the significance of these results: “We have now used all options available to electrify the 918 Spyder, working right up to the last minute to do so.”

The enhancements also bring benefits in terms of the electrical performance delivered by the hybrid super sports car. The two electric motors on the front and rear axle allow the 918 Spyder to accelerate from zero to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 6.2 seconds, without producing any emissions. Such a performance marks a reduction of seven tenths of a second versus the previous time. With the Weissach package fitted, this electric sprinting time is reduced to 6.1 seconds.

The 918 Spyder complete with Weissach package currently holds the lap record for road vehicles on the Nürburgring Nordschleife, with a time of 6:57 minutes. At the same time, as a vehicle delivering particularly low consumption and emission figures, the model is certified to efficiency class A+.

With the Weissach package fitted, the total NEDC fuel consumption of the 918 Spyder amounts to 94 mpg (3.0 l/100 km) – 91 mpg (3.1 l/100 km) without the Weissach package. That equates to CO2 emissions of 70 g/km (72 g/km without the Weissach package). The level of energy consumption was determined to be 12.7 kWh/100 km during the approval cycle.

Fellow Cascade Porche-Pushers,

I apologize for tardiness for this month’s newsletter, but work and life

got in the way. Here it is already December, and boy did the year fly

by, it seems like the older I get, the years seem to go by faster. Any

way, we had a good year with lots of good drives and dinners but

more importantly we’ve gotten to know each other a lot better.

The Board and I wishes everybody a joyous and safe holiday season

and look forward to your wonderful company next year. Check the

calendar for this month’s activities, and as always, see you in my

mirrors.

Sincerely,

Ross Rampy [email protected]

Porsche Museum

Welcomes its Two-

Millionth Visitor

atlanta. During the anniversary year of the porsche 911, the museum of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. porsche ag in Stuttgart, germany, has welcomed its two millionth visitor through its doors. “We are delighted to have reached this new visitor record before Christmas”, reports achim Stejskal, Director porsche Museum. During the second half of this year, the “50 years of the 911” special exhibition in particular attracted more than 200,000 visitors from all over the world to Zuffenhausen. The upward trend

in visitor numbers over the past four years is an indication of the museum’s success: In its opening year in 2009 alone, over 500,000 people visited the porsche Museum. By June 2011, the Museum at porscheplatz had welcomed one million guests through its doors. “More than 35% of our visitors come from outside germany”, explains achim Stejskal.

Using the latest museum didactics at its 5600-cubic-metre exhibition space, one of the main functions of the porsche Museum is to convey the wealth of historical and contemporary information available about porsche as a company. However, the sportscar manufacturer also celebrates anniversaries and showcases exhibits several times a year to young and old alike in the form of special exhibitions – a current example is the “60 years of the super

sportscar” exhibition. What’s more, the porsche Museum is sending out more and more classic models from its stock to historical events around the world, to act as rolling brand ambassadors. This year alone, over 250 events in 11 separate countries, such as China, Russia, Japan, australia and the USa, have involved exhibition vehicles from the museum.

prior to the porsche Museum celebrating its fifth anniversary on January 31, 2014, extended opening hours will be kept during the Christmas period. Visitors can enjoy the exhibition space from 9.00 to 18.00 on December 26. entry to the museum costs €8 for adults and €4 for concessions. Children aged 14 and younger can visit the museum free of charge if accompanied by an adult. For more information, please visit www.porsche.com/museum.

The Sacrifice by Joel Weyhe

The house I live in was booked by 5 middle-

aged women for 10 days. They weren’t

coming to see me. So it was easy to decide

make a sacrifice and leave them the house for

the duration. It ’s a small house. The idea was

to take the “Grey Car”, my 9-year old 997, on

another voyage of discovery. The long-term

weather forecast looked good for California. I

would do this for the girls.

The idea, as always, was to avoid freeways at all costs, which is often difficult to do. I had a

very loose plan to visit a few art museums and a of couple automotive museums. Another per-

sistent thing with me is the San Andreas Fault. Following that feature through the landscape is

a great way to see the country. I keep thinking that maybe if I stand next to it long enough it

will move a little.

The voyage started well. Chapter members are no doubt familiar with route 96, but I wasn’t.

It follows the Klamath River toward the coast and it has a bazillion curves. So, it ’s a gorgeous

late October day, the leaves are red, yellow and orange and the sky is deep blue. There is an

occasional breath of breeze to send flocks of fluttering leaves to animate the scene. Incredibly,

in the first 150-plus miles there was not another car in sight. Not one. How is that possible?

Even driving that stretch in good Porsche fashion, it took, I’ll just suggest, at least two focused

hours at the wheel. If I hadn’t been so busy it would have been a lonesome stretch of road.

But lonesome I was not. At one point about an hour into it, I thought to pinch myself to see if

this was another of these weird dreams, but it wouldn’t have been a good idea to take a hand

off the wheel. I don’t know if it was the time of year, the day of the week ( Tuesday) or the time

of day, but that was one nice drive.

The Blackhawk is worth every penny of the $10 admission.

Page 13: December 2013 Der Auspuff

While the Monterey Museum of Art was fun to visit, I really enjoyed the Crocker Art Museum

in Sacramento. It was a challenge to my limited artistic sense. It didn’t hurt that the Grey Car

was parked in such a spot that as I toured the exhibits I would occasionally pass a window and

admire the nice lines of a Carrera too.

So here is study in contrasts: I spent a good deal of time in two automotive museums,

the Blackhawk in Danville and the California Automobile Museum (formerly the Towe) in

Sacramento. Visiting the Blackhawk is pretty much like visiting a high-end art museum. All the

cars are beautifully presented with perfect lighting and black marble floors. It is impossible to

take a bad picture in there. I should know. The California on the other hand, is more like going

into a chilly, dusty warehouse. That venue appeals to me a bit more than the absolute perfec-

tion of the Blackhawk. The cars at the California present themselves as very real. And there

was a Porsche in there; Linda Ronstadt’s black 3.2 Carrera Targa. It looks like a nice used car.

Time to check out the San Andreas Fault on the way home. After a fair bit of research I identi-

fied where the fault crosses the coast road just before diving beneath the waves as it heads

out to the Pacific for the last time. So I placed the Grey Car on it as squarely as I could figure it,

and snapped a photo. The cows were as amused as I was. It was good voyage. The girls never

missed me.
