Illinois Adventure: A Special Bicentennial EditionsAs Illinois celebrates its 200th year we’ll look back at some of the historic places we visited during our travels in order to create a picture of this state’s rich past. Keep in mind some of the segments included in this series were shot many years ago. Since then exhibits have changed and even some locations have closed, but we have included them feeling their stories are relevant in the telling of Illinois’ history. Thursdays (Aug – Nov) at 8 PM

Episode 1 – Pre-Historic Thursday, August 2nd at 8 PM Our first stop is a site that started as a curiosity and has become one of the major on-site archaeological museums in the country. Today it introduces visitors to the pre-historic cultures that once lived along the fertile Illinois River Valley.

Episode 2- French, Thursday, August 9th at 8 PMThe first Europeans to lay claim to the land that eventually became Illinois started exploring the region during the 1600’s. On maps they referred to this area as “Upper Louisiana” and eventually establish an administrative center on the banks of the Mississippi River.

Episode 3-Americans Arrive – Thursday, August 16th at 8 PMIn our last episode we visited two military outposts, but the French built more than just forts. In Cahokia three buildings remain that had their foundations in the French colonial era and played a role in a young country’s history.

Episode 4 – State Capitols – Thursday, August 30th at 8 PMIn 1818 Illinois joined the Union and the state’s legislature met on the second floor of a rented build-ing in the town of Kaskaskia. Since then, that building along with the town has been erased from the landscape by Mother Nature.

Tune in Thursdays at 8 PM August through November to see these Illinois Adventure: Bicentennial Editions.

Come meet Bob the Builder at the Peoria Chiefs! Saturday, August 4th at 6:30 PM

Construction Night with Bob the Builder

Travels With DarleyTravels with Darley follows five-time Emmy-nominated TV host Darley Newman as experiences the history, culture, food, music, art and adventure in beautiful and awe-inspiring locations. Each episode introduces diverse cultures and traditions and what makes each location truly unique.

Local residents and guides open up to Darley about their favorite spots to reveal the authentic sights, sounds, tastes, aromas, and adventures that can only be experienced when you travel like a local, not a tourist.

The first season dives deep to explore each location, giving viewers the chance to ex-perience the charms of Belgium, the Guadeloupe Islands, Arkansas, Kentucky, South Carolina, Maryland and Michigan. Darley’s adventures are as diverse as the destina-tions she experiences — from learning to make chocolate in Brussels to snorkeling in the Jacques Cousteau Reserve in the Guadeloupe Islands to sampling country cuisine in South Carolina and Kentucky.

Travels with Darley marathon airs August 25 & 26.

America ReFramed: Children of the Arctic—Tuesday, August 7 at 7 PMChildren of the Arctic is a year-in-the-life portrait of Native Alaskan teenagers coming of age in Barrow, Alaska - the northern-most community of the United States. For these teenagers growing up has become a little more complicated than it was for their ancestors who originally named this place “Ukpiagvik” (“where we hunt snowy owls”). They are the twenty-first century descendants of a culture that has endured for millennia on this isolated, but rapidly changing tundra.

Reel South: See the Keepers Wednesday, August 8 at 7 PMWith unprecedented behind-the-scenes access at the Memphis Zoo, See the Keepers gets up close and personal with big cats, penguins, snakes, Komodo dragons, and their human caretakers. When Kofi the giraffe faces an uncertain future, the film bears witness to the com-plexity of caring for animals in captivity, and the love and fortitude of the keepers that care for them.

America ReFramed: Kivalina Tuesday, August 14 at 7 PMAt the edge of the world, the Inupiaq people are fighting for survival. Kivalina documents life on this namesake island that teeters on the edge of the North Pacific. Once a nomadic people, the Inupiaq were relocated to Kivalina, Alaska, by the US government more than a century ago. Today, the community struggles to maintain itself in the face of forces largely beyond its control. Climate change threatens to drown the village under rising ocean levels. The neglect of a govern-ment thousands of miles away delays repairs to the crumbling sea wall that routinely fails to protect the island from the flooding caused by ever more frequent storms.

America ReFramed: City of Trees Tuesday, August 21 During the recession, CITY OF TREES follows three trainees and the directors of a stimulus-funded green job-training program designed to put unemployed people back to work by caring for parks in DC. As they navigate community tensions and a fast-approaching deadline before the grant money runs out, CITY OF TREES thrusts viewers into the inspiring but messy world of job training and the paradoxes changemakers face in urban communities everyday.

America ReFramed: Bidder 70 Tuesday, August 28Bidder 70 traces Tim DeChristopher’s growth from concerned citizen and student of economics to climate justice activist and leader. Fueled by a desire to safeguard Utah’s national parks, Tim registers as bidder #70 in a controversial oil and gas lease auction in order to resist the sale of thousands of acres of pristine land. Tim’s act of civil disobedience leads to a legal battle.
