Presidents Message Members of the Guild, Many of you have a family history of quilting — a grandmother, an aunt, a mom someone who got you started by placing a needle in your hand and encouraging you. My mom is not a quilter, although she was (before arthritis took its toll on her hands) a rather brilliant knitter and crocheter. I remember watching her with wonder — balls of yarn somehow magically transformed by her talented hands into row after row of lovely and perfect- ly even stitches. Entwined cables and other intricate designs would some- how become afghans and sweaters. Yarns almost as fine as threads would form stitches so tiny as to seem impossible and form the most deli- cate baby caps and booties. No child born in her orbit failed to receive these beautiful gifts. Both my mom and my grandmother made many valiant efforts to teach me those skills and, no doubt, felt nothing but despair at my fumble-fingered attempts and my lack of patience. Im sure my grandmother went to her grave convinced that I lacked every womanly skill and hadnt a creative bone in my body. Fortunately, I took up quilting soon enough for my mom to see me do it. I have cut and kitted a couple of quilt tops to take to my moms when I go to visit her next week. I bought a sewing machine and a handful of basic tools which live in a closet at her place. When I construct quilt tops at my moms, I set up at her dining room table and she likes to sit across from me and watch the blocks, and eventually the quilt top, come together. She watches me with the same wonder that I remember feeling when I watched her make astonishing and beautiful things. I love that! It is good to be reminded that, to non-quilters, what we do seems almost like a mag- ic trick! I hope all of you are having a lovely summer and are making good use of these long daylight hours to make beautiful and magical quilts! Darlene Silverman You cant use up creativity. A Quilting Friend!

President’s Message

Members of the Guild, Many of you have a family history of quilting — a grandmother, an aunt, a mom — someone who got you started by placing a needle in your hand and encouraging you. My mom is not a quilter, although she was (before arthritis took its toll on her hands) a rather brilliant knitter and crocheter. I remember watching her with wonder — balls of yarn somehow magically transformed by her talented hands into row after row of lovely and perfect-ly even stitches. Entwined cables and other intricate designs would some-how become afghans and sweaters. Yarns almost as fine as threads would form stitches so tiny as to seem impossible and form the most deli-cate baby caps and booties. No child born in her orbit failed to receive these beautiful gifts. Both my mom and my grandmother made many valiant efforts to teach me those skills and, no doubt, felt nothing but despair at my fumble-fingered attempts and my lack of patience. I’m sure my grandmother went to her grave convinced that I lacked every womanly skill and hadn’t a creative bone in my body. Fortunately, I took up quilting soon enough for my mom to see me do it. I have cut and kitted a couple of quilt tops to take to my mom’s when I go to visit her next week. I bought a sewing machine and a handful of basic tools which live in a closet at her place. When I construct quilt tops at my mom’s, I set up at her dining room table and she likes to sit across from me and watch the blocks, and eventually the quilt top, come together. She watches me with the same wonder that I remember feeling when I watched her make astonishing and beautiful things. I love that! It is good to be reminded that, to non-quilters, what we do seems almost like a mag-ic trick! I hope all of you are having a lovely summer and are making good use of these long daylight hours to make beautiful and magical quilts! Darlene Silverman You can’t use up creativity. Our August-October Swap will be a Journal Cover. You will be purchasing a bound journal/notebook (size re-quested by partner) and creating a quilted/quilty cover for the journal. The form to sign up for this swap is included in the newsletter and can be emailed to [email protected] , printed and mailed to Cathy Kirk, 404 Mickey Lane, Cary, NC 27513, or turned in at the AUGUST meeting. Sign-ups will close at the end of the August meeting. You will have 2 months to complete the journal cover. You will check in with a progress photo in September, and we will exchange journals at the October meeting. Please print clearly on your forms. I scan the forms and email them to participants, so I need the information to be legible. The allergy and pet information is important, so please fill it out accurately. We will have a drawing for a prize among the participants in the last 3 swaps at the August meeting. Thanks for participating! Cathy Kirk 919-469-5378 [email protected]
