Hey incoming First-Year students!

We are Ryan and Simon, your Frosh Orientation Coordinators! We are the ones that, with the help of our executive committee, planned your Frosh Week 2013 and will get you oriented to University of Toronto on an academic, social and explorative level! Whether you are a commuting Torontonian or from out of town, or from outside Canada, Frosh Week promises to be one of the most memorable weeks of your lives!

On the first day of Frosh, Monday, September 2nd, you will meet the rest of the Frosh team upon arrival at the Innis Residence. Registration will start that day at 10:30am; this is where you will discover which group you will be in. Registration will last until 2:00pm and lunch will be served during, but if you cannot make it before 2:00pm, speak to a Front Desk Staff member of Innis Residence when you arrive and they will help you get caught up with the rest of us.

Community Outreach Explained

Community Outreach lets students learn about Toronto while participating in community-minded initiatives. This committee gives an opportunity for students to make connections with and support the community through volunteering and fundraising as well as provides an outlet for students who are passionate about an issue to take action and help make a difference.

IIdex Canada: Architecture and Design Students Register Now! Registration is now open for the largest Architecture and Design Exposition in

Canada. Students can register for free here. If you are interested in meeting some of the top design and architectural firms in Canada, check it out here, along with the Student Design Awards on Thursday, September 26th at Exhibition Place.

Over the course of the year, you'll have opportunities to receive tips from upper-years as well as resumé workshops, interview tips, advice to help you land your first internship, and many networking opportunities with accomplished alumni working in the real world. When you combine it with free treats, books, and prizes, you DO NOT want to miss the chance to discover all your secrets to Skills For Success. The Spirituality and Diversity Committee focuses on programs that make us ask question about ourselves and who we really are through a multi-focal lens. It is also designed to helps us learn more about the cultures, values, and beliefs of others. Innis, like the University of Toronto, is a very diverse space and the Spirituality and Diversity portfolio is here to help us learn more about other people we will meet as well as ourselves. Programs to look forward to include Discussions on Diversity and International Film Nights.

Enjoy a free Greek Lunch and meet your ICSS Commuter Representatives on September 18th in Innis College’s Commuter Lounge. Your Reps will answer any questions and reveal upcoming events.

A Letter from the Innis Residence Council President HEY INNIS! Welcome to Residence! We hope you're as excited for the start of the year as we are! I'm Lamorna, the President of the Innis Residence Council (IRC) this year and I want to give you some quick info about the Innis Residence Council. The IRC strives to help residents find a balance between their academics, social lives, and community involvement. We consist of 5 executive members and 6 Senior House Representatives. You can meet our current council at: http://www.innisresidence.utoronto.ca/irc/council. There are also 6 Junior House Representative positions that are open to first years.

Within the council, there are also various committees and clubs with which you can get involved. These include: Community Outreach, Yearbook, Environmental, Electronics Committee, TGIF and Fit Club. More information on first year positions or how to get involved with these groups will be provided at the Innis Clubs Day during Frosh Week.

August 28th is the last day you can request Type 2 or Type 3 subject POSts. This is the end of the second request period.

The University is closed on September 2nd for Labour Day.

New International Students Here are some helpful resources that will assist you in your transition to University of Toronto and to Canada

• Centre for International Experience (CIE) where you can find English Language practice, Immigration Advising, Global Lounge intercultural events, mentorship programming and so much more.

• International Transition Advisor who comes to Innis College on Tuesdays between 3:00-7:00 pm

• CIE’s International Student Orientation sessions that you can select to fit into your schedule

• Information about the City of Toronto’s Airport Welcome Booth

Join iConnect and receive mentor support before you arrive! Apply for the iConnect program and get matched with a peer mentor who will communicate with you before you arrive to answer your questions, and make sure you are ready for September. During the year, meet new iConnect friends, attend workshops and social events, and increase your cross-cultural understanding. Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis. Innis International Student Orientation Day

Representatives from the University of Toronto's Center for the International Experience and Innis College's Registrar and the Office of Student Life present an afternoon specifically tailored to the unique challenges faced by International Students making the transition to Innis College, the University of Toronto, and life in Canada. Consisting of informal discussion groups, presentations, and available upper-year student mentors, this event is a must for any incoming international student. Please email [email protected] . Communication Café

Meet with others to develop language skills!

Our activities focus on helping students whose first language is not English to feel confident expressing their ideas orally. Vocabulary expansion and development of critical thinking are emphasized.

Past topics include:

• world painting and photography

• Canadian literature, history and politics

• persuasive presentations, interviews, and debates

• science and business ethics

• vocabulary games and dramatic role-play

Housing Service Work-Study Apply Now! Housing Services (HS) is a student resource for on- and off-campus housing at the University of Toronto. We offer information, resources, and personal assistance needed to meet housing goals. They also assist and manage ads for landlords offering housing specifically for students. They have two employment opportunities for student leaders and role models who will represent and promote housing services to the community on the St. George Campus. The INNIS Café is Hiring for the Fall!

Innis College is looking for two Innis students to work part-time in our amazing Innis Café for the coming year. Resumés (with your available hours for the fall) can be dropped off in person to Ali Shahidi no later than Tuesday, September 3rd. Training will be over a few days in the first week of September with shifts beginning on September 9th.

Athletic and Varsity Blues

The Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education has hundreds of jobs open to all U of T students. Why not enjoy a job that is fun and exciting! Innis Students: Be part of your College government!

Innis College is the only Arts & Science College at the University of Toronto that has parity government. This means there are an equal number of students to faculty/staff positions in our governing Council, and its respective Boards, Committees, and Sub-Committees. Some students are automatically included in many of these committees by virtue of their current elected position. But we are always looking for more students to fulfill the requirements to maintain equal student representation.

Each of the Boards & Committees and Council below are looking for committed individuals who will come to two to three meetings over the course of the academic school year. Your participation in any of these Boards will also satisfy the requirements for the Co-Curricular record, provided you are active in the group and attend all meetings. This is a great opportunity to learn some leadership skills while providing your student voice on how our College is governed.

If you are interested in joining one of the following Boards or Committees, or College Council, please send an email with your name, student number and email address to the Innis Dean of Students at [email protected] no later than FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 13TH. Please indicate which of the following groups you would be interested in joining, and we will notify you of the first meeting of the term (usually around the end of September).

• College Council – is the large governing body for our College that encompasses the following four Boards and their respective Committees

• Academic Affairs Board – meets to discuss the operations and effectiveness of the entire Innis College Academic Program

• Student Affairs Board - monitors the operations and effectiveness of the College's non-academic services and Student Life programs

• Community Affairs Board – monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the College fund-raising and public relations strategies; and encouraging the development of responsive relationships between the College and the community

• College Affairs Board – review policies pertaining to the administration and use of all College facilities and services

• Recruitment, Admissions, and Awards Committee (RAAC) - advises the Student Affairs Board on policies pertaining to the recruitment and admission of students to Innis College; and advise on policies pertaining to Innis College scholarships and awards and recommend for consideration by Council decisions regarding the granting or establishment of specific awards;

• Bursary Sub-Committee – reviews and approves applications for student bursaries and advises RAAC on these applications

• Residence Committee - advises the Student Affairs Board on policies pertaining to the operation of the Innis Residence and to the services offered to its residents; and advise on policies pertaining to the admission of students to the Innis Residence

• Student Services Committee – advise the Principal and Council on policy for student services offered in the College

• Co-Curricular Sub-Committee – reviews, evaluates and approves College student activities and positions for the University’s Co-Curricular Record
