Their relationship in Christian faith and life, however, has fallen somewhat out of favor in the past generation, as certain prescribed Church rules and regulations have been reduced and relaxed. These rules were often referred to as "disciplines." We are mistaken, however, to think that it no longer takes discipline to follow Christ. The Letter to the Hebrews assures us of that today. Our discipline is more like that of an athlete pursuing a victory or a personal best, or a musician striving for a concert career or to master a new piece of music. This discipline comes from desire, not from regulations. It was the desire to do the will of God that led Jesus on the path to his cross. It is that same desire he encourages in us today: to strive to enter through the narrow gate, to find ourselves in the kingdom with a surprising assortment of people who are there not because of mere observation of rules, but out of a genuine desire to recline at the table of the heavenly banquet. Welcome A Message from Msgr. Joe As we gather for today’s celebra on, we recall that through our Bap sm God has invited us to the eternal kingdom. While the ques on that we hear in today’s Gospel is about how many will be saved, for us the be er ques on should be, “Will I be saved?” Let us pray today through this celebra on that we might receive the grace and the will to do what God requires of us in this life. This week, I look forward to joining our dedicated PTA in welcoming the new families to our parish school with a picnic this Thursday. As always, I am grateful for the commitment our en re parish community makes to providing an opportunity for a Catholic School ministry. It is a long and faithful tradi on of the Catholic Community of Princeton that we con nue. Installa on of the new hea ng system con nues and are on schedule to open as planned. As the end of summer approaches, I also wish to men on that our Parish Religious Educa on Program has also been working diligently to make this upcoming year a rich experience for our children to encounter and grow in their love and knowledge of the Lord. If you haven’t registered or reregistered your children yet, please do so as soon as possible. Informa on about registra on is found in this week’s bulle n. Class begin the week of September 11th. Here is a ZENIT transla on of the address Pope Francis gave during the morning’s General Audience in the Va can’s Paul VI Hall on Wednesday, August 17, 2016 Dear Brothers and Sisters, good morning! Today, we wish to reflect on the miracle of the mul plica on of the loaves. At the beginning of Ma hew’s account (cf. 14:13-21), Jesus has just received the news of John the Bap st’s death, and He crosses the lake in a boat, seeking “a deserted place by himself” (v. 13). The people, however, caught on and went ahead of Him on foot, so that “When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, and he cured their sick.” (v. 14). Jesus was like this: always with compassion, always thinking of others. The determina on of the people who feared to be le alone, as though abandoned, is impressive. John the

Bap st, the charisma c prophet, being dead, they entrust themselves to Jesus, of whom John himself had said: “The one who is coming a er me is migh er than I.” (Ma hew 3:11). So, the crowds follow Him everywhere, to hear Him and to bring the sick to Him. And, seeing this, Jesus is moved. Jesus is not cold; He does not have a cold heart. Jesus can be moved. On one hand, He feels bound to this crowd and does not want them to go away; on the other, He is in need of moments of solitude, of prayer, with the Father. He spends many nights praying with His Father. So, that day also, the Master dedicated Himself to the people. His compassion is not a vague sen ment; instead, it shows all the strength of His will to be close to us and to save us. Jesus loves us so much and wants to be close to us.

When it was evening, Jesus was concerned to feed all those red and hungry people, and He takes care of all those who follow Him. And He wants to involve His disciples in this. In fact, He says to them: “you give them something to eat” (v. 16). And He showed them that the few loaves and fish they had — with the strength of faith and prayer –, could be shared by all those people. Jesus wrought a miracle, but it is the miracle of faith, of prayer, aroused by compassion and love. So Jesus “broke and gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds” (v. 19). The Lord goes to meet men’s needs, but He wants to make each one of us concretely par cipant of His compassion. Now, we pause on Jesus’ gesture of blessing: He took “the five loaves and the two fish,

Our Parish Mission

We, the Catholic Community of Saint Paul in Princeton, honor our tradition of welcoming God’s

sons and daughters from different cultures and backgrounds to hear and live the Good News of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Baptized and formed into the People of God, we continue to grow in the Apostolic Tradition of Worship, Word and Service.

Worship through our participation in the Eucharist and celebration of sacraments; Word, in our commitment to Catholic identity through Scripture and catechesis; and

Service, as disciples who share God’s love with all by working together for peace and justice to advance the coming of the Kingdom of God.

Spiritual Direction Tending the sacred rela onship

Spiritual direc on is an on-going rela onship between a “directee” (person seeking) and a “director” (qualified person giving guidance) wherein a sacred space is created for the explora on and deepening of the spiritual life. Through conversa on and reflec on, the directee becomes more a uned to God's presence and can respond more fully to the Divine as it is revealed in all areas of life. Direc on typically takes place in a confiden al one-on-one se ng and may include some form of prayer experience to increase awareness of the movement of the Spirit in the directee’s life. If you are interested in more informa on, please contact Jennifer Hinton at [email protected] or 609-558-0985 (cell) or Teresa Knipper at 609-558-0582(cell) or [email protected]. Faith Formation A Message from John Michael McGuire Every year in conjunc on with Summer Academy our parish does a school supply drive. We collect backpacks and essen al supplies that area children can use as they begin the next year of school. This year, I am happy to say that out of the generosity of our parish we were able to prepare supplies for 20 children. The items that we collected were assembled into packs by our fourth grade Summer Academy students. In this way we connect them to the concept that not everyone has everything they need, and it is a responsibility of a community to look to the needs of our neighbors. While this lesson tends to be one of social jus ce, it is also reflects liturgical prac ces. Every week at Mass we have a collec on, parishioners and visitors donate whatever they can towards the upkeep of the parish community. It is all applied for our shared needs as a community. This concept of giving an offering at Church reflects the reality of the early Church. Those gathered would offer up wine and bread at the community gatherings, and that is what would be consecrated and distributed to those present, and to those too ill or infirm to come to the gathering (deacons would be sent to visit them, and bring them the body and blood of Christ). Even now, when the offering is monetary, a por on of what is collected is used to purchase the bread and wine that is consecrated, and brought out into the community to

those who are unable to join us. It is engrained into the prac ce of our faith, and the ministries of our Church, that we as a community should do for those who cannot. That is where hospitals, orphanages, refugee rese lement, Catholic elementary and high schools, even universi es find their founda on. This week, let’s pray for those who go without, and that we might con nue to be of generous spirit towards our neighbors!

Jesús vino a salvar, no a condenar.

Celebrating Who We Are and Where We Are From

Holy Father and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them” (v. 19). As can be seen, these are the same signs that Jesus carried out in the Last Supper; and they are also the same that every priest carries out when he celebrates the Holy Eucharist. The Chris an community is born and reborn con nually of this Eucharis c Communion. To live communion with Christ, therefore, is altogether other than remaining passive and estranged from daily life; on the contrary, it inserts us increasingly in our rela on with the men and women of our me, to offer them a concrete sign of mercy and of Christ’s care. While nourishing us with Christ, li le by li le the Eucharist we celebrate also transforms us into the Body of Christ and spiritual food for brothers. Jesus wants to reach everyone, to bring to all the love of God. Therefore, He renders every believer a servant of mercy. Jesus saw the crowds, He felt compassion for them and He mul plied the loaves; He does the same with the Eucharist. And we believers, who receive this Eucharis c bread, are driven by Jesus to bring this service to others, with His same compassion. This is the way. The account of the mul plica on of loaves and fish ends with the verifica on that all were sa sfied and with the gathering of the le over pieces (cf. v. 20). When, with His compassion and His love, Jesus gives us a grace, He forgives us our sins, He embraces

us, He loves us, He does not do things by half, but completely. As happened here, all are sa sfied. Jesus fills our heart and our life with His love, with His forgiveness, with His compassion. Hence Jesus allowed His disciples to carry out His order. Thus they know the way to follow: to feed the people and keep them united; to be, that is, at the service of life and of communion. Therefore, we invoke the Lord, may He always render

His Church capable of this holy service, so that every one of us is able to be an instrument of communion in our own family, at work, in the parish and in groups of memberships, a visible sign of the mercy of God, who does not want to leave anyone in solitude and in need, so that communion and peace and men’s communion with God descend among men, because this communion is life for all.
