GOOD NEWSlsaiah zz:rgrz3 I Romans u:33-36 / Matthew r6:e3-zo
The last long days of summer are always a paradox. We an-ticipate the break inthe summer heat and look for the crisp, cool air that refreshes us. Children play
outside as though they can't get enough of summer even as they get newschool supplies and look forward to seeing their friends. Everywhere is a sense
of change; something is about to happen, and we won't be the same.
I wonderwhether Peterfelt the same way. He and the disciples had seen Jesus
heal, cast out demons, and teach the ways of God. But did Peter and thedisciples really know what they were getting into or who they were following?
Students are often tested at the end of summer vacation to see what they'velearned and retained. Did the disciples have any sense that this might happen tothem? Change is in the air and, ready or not, the lessons of the past are about tobe put to the test.
"Who do you say that I am?" Peter's answer shows he's been paying attention. He names Jesus for who he truly is-the Messiah.
He gets more than he bargained for. His name is changed, his life is changed,
and he finds himself at the head of the class. Maybe he longed for the time he
could fish all day, but now he's headed toward Jerusalem on the path thatbrings him face to face with the living God.
Vacation is almost over for us now as well, and school will soon begin. Whathave we learned from our en€ounters with God this summer?
Are we open, as Peter was, to be really changed by him?

Christians believe death is ultimately defeated in God's giftof a new creation. This new and eternal creation is madepossible by the L,ord Jesus Christ, who 'bill change ourmortal bodies to be like his in glory, for he is risen, thefirstborn from the dead" (Orfuofchri$ian FuneralE 402).
Resurrection, then, is not a return to earthly life. Our bodiesare not resuscitated like Lazarus' (see John 11), but me
rezurrected like Christ's, transformed and glorified.
Christians traditionally revere the body-dive and at death-because we are created in God's image. Some people re:Eonthd such respect prevents donating the body to science, buttha is not the opinion ofthe Church.
In his 1956 allocution to physiiians' Pope Pius )(II said, "Aperson may will to dispose of one's body and to destine it toends that are useful, morally irreproachable, and even noble, among them the desire to aid the sick and suffering.
One may make a decision of this nature with respect to one'sown body with full realization of the reverenc€ which is dueit;'Such a self-giving act in death-in consultation with familymembers or health care providers-is a supreme
mamifestation of Christ in what it means to be Christian.
