PUBLISHING INFORMATION

Crestview IS Awesome!Last month I had the honor and

the privilege of being sworn in as the 61st Chairman of the Board at the Crestview Area Chamber of Commerce. It is certainly one of the highlights of my career so far and I’m so thankful for the opportunity. I know that it’s going to be a great year!

If you attended the Installation Dinner, you heard me say there is no place as awesome as Crestview. Let me take this opportunity to tell you why I still think that (and always will). Every town has its challenges. I choose to view challenges as opportunities. I also choose to live and work here, because despite any challenges this city might face, in my opinion they are outweighed by so much goodness. We have great schools, great churches, and businesses big and small. We have people who have lived here for generations and people who just got here all working together. I love that when I go to a store or a restaurant I almost always see someone I know. There are family friendly activities happening around town year-round. And most everyone smiles as they pass each other in public! It feels like home to me, and there’s honestly nowhere else I would rather be. It’s “Like no other place you know”.

There are a lot of great things going on in the Chamber in the months ahead. Keep your eyes peeled for more information about our 2017 Annual Hacker’s Golf Tournament. Mark Clark from Okaloosa Gas is chairing that tournament for us and he’s working

hard to make it the best one yet! Sponsorship and team entry information will be available at www.Crestviewchamber.com, but go ahead and mark your calendars for September 30th, 2017 and plan on golf-ing with us at Blackstone Golf Course. You can come as a team or come as an individual and we will set you up on one. I will tell you that I play a mean game of goofy golf, but real golfing is not my strength. If you are like me, don’t let that stop you from coming! It’s called a Hacker’s Tournament for a reason! If you can swing a club, you’re qualified to play! Some of the players in years past have worn costumes or silly outfits too. It’s always a good time. I really hope you will join us!

Another thing you will probably hear me say a mil-lion times this year is that I am here for YOU! If there is something that this Chamber can do to help you succeed, I want to know! I also want to know if you have any comments or suggestions for us. My office door is always open and my phone is always on. Don’t hesitate to contact me if I can be of any assistance.

I’ll see you soon!

For households with school-aged kids, summer is really a fun time for everyone in the Family – including your pets. But what’s a “Dog to Do” when the kids head back to school in August and the house suddenly becomes quiet & lonely?

Changes in daily routines can trigger depression or separation anxiety when your pets are suddenly separated from the ones they love or attached to. Dogs with separation anxiety might display destructive behaviors like chewing, pacing the floors, soiling in the home, attempting to escape, or excessive howling or barking. It is also possible for them to exhibit signs of aggressiveness, loss of appetite or even upset stomach with symptoms of diarrhea, after being home with constant human companionship.

The good news is that there are ways to help your pet cope with this, according to the American Society for Prevention to Animals (ASPCA) and recommends some of the following :

• Give your pet his favorite toy to play with only when you leave & take it from him when you get home

• Prep him/her for longer absences in the weeks leading up to the new schedule & stay very calm when you go to walk out the door

• You may want to consider crate training, if their behavior is especially destructive

• An extended walk provides them with plenty of exercise prior to leaving, which will help them be relaxed and calm during the day

A WORD FROM OUR SPONSOR

w w w . l e e b u i c k g m c . c o m

THIS SPACE WAS GRACIOUSLY DONATED BY LEE BUICK GMC.

Rotary is a global network of 1.2 million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers who come together to make positive, lasting change in communities at home and abroad.

Attorney Paul P. Harris founded the Rotary Club of Chicago on February 23, 1905 as a means by which like-minded professionals could form friendships, exchange ideas and serve their communities. Today Rotary International is comprised of some 35,000+ clubs and 1.2 million members worldwide. For more than 110 years, Rotary has bridged cultures and connected continents to champion peace, fight illiteracy and poverty, promote clean water and sanitation, and fight disease.

Locally, the Rotary Club of Crestview meets at noon each Wednesday at Samuel’s Roadhouse (the former Coach N Four). Our club was established in 1987 and cur-rently has 39 members. Through successful fundraising efforts in 2016, we raised over $30,000 to help support worthy causes within the local area and beyond.

One of our major fundraisers, the Wild Game Feast and Hunt, celebrated its 24th year in February 2017. At this ticketed event, approximately 500 attendees enjoyed a great evening of food, entertainment, and fellowship. A portion of the proceeds from this fundraiser were once again given to Raider Athletics at Northwest Florida State College. This year’s contribution brings our total giving to more than $125,000.

For the third consecutive year our Crestview Club conducted The Great Gun Giveaway, which was also a great success. One thousand tickets were distributed for a donation of $30 each, giving donors 30 chances to win a variety of rifles and hand-guns over a 30 day period. We partnered with Precision Tactical Arms Company in Crestview, where all the background checks and transfers were handled, to ensure every winner met the legal requirements for gun ownership. This year we plan to expand on our success and offer a Great Gift Giveaway that will feature a wide variety of sought after prizes rather than only guns.

What does our Rotary Club do with all the money we raise? Lots of great things! Just within the last twelve months:

• Partnered with other Rotary clubs in the area to bring a Kids Scoop News page to the Daily News with youth targeted activities and articles.

• Supported Northwest Florida State College’s First Generation Scholarship• Provided copies of the U.S. Constitution to all north Okaloosa County 7th

graders, to coincide with their Constitution study units.• Hand delivered dictionaries to all north Okaloosa County 3rd graders.• Participated in Relay for Life.• Continued our annual support of NWFSC Raider Athletics.• Donated to several local schools to support their special projects including

Baker ROTC, Laurel Hill and Southside Elementary.• Supported Special Operations Wounded Warriors.• Continued our support of the Rotary Foundation, including but not limited

to the Polio Plus Campaign to eradi-cate Polio from the world.

• Began routine contributions to CART (Coins for Alzheimer’s Research Trust).

• Provided a new security system to Safe Connections. • Helped meet Bob Sikes Robotic Team’s travel needs while attending their

national competition.

Also, during the past year, Rotarians from our club volunteered with Catholic Charities Caring Coach project. The Caring Coach makes a stop once a month at a central meeting location in Baker so that underprivileged families, many without adequate transportation to get to the various food banks in Crestview, can have access to free groceries for their families. Each month Rotarians assisted in handing out food to an average of 40 families in need.

In all we do, we strive to follow the “Four Way Test” of Rotary. Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned? The Rotary Club of Crestview is always looking for new members who are interested in embracing the mission of Rotary International. If you are interested in finding out more about membership in Rotary, contact any Rotarian or email us at [email protected].

This year’s Board of Directors for the Rotary Club of Crestview are Samma Brannon (President), Deb Gething (President Elect), Nikki Schneberger (Secretary), Allyson Oury (Treasurer), Dale Henderson (Director), Matthew Southard (Director), Carla Reinlie (Director), Larry Ward (Immediate Past President) and Mike Connell (Sergeant at Arms).

A big thank you to the owners at Lee Buick GMC, and Rotarian Dale Henderson, for donating your Chamber sponsorship time to our club for the August meeting. We are very appreciative of your continued support of our club.

If you would like to host a ribbon cutting for your business, please contact

the Crestview Chamber at 850.682.3212 for more

information.

What are you going to do when you retire? That is the question I heard most when I announced to people that I was retiring. My first answer was I am going to play golf. The of course there is the list of honey do’s that have built up over time. That really doesn’t take up much time if you consider a week without a full schedule.

In the past, I was very busy with work and my participation in the Crestview Area Chamber of Commerce. Well the work is over. The first thing I did was to join the Chamber as an individual member. Why would I do that? My friends are still members of the Chamber. Where do I get answers about services that I need? The Chamber. How may I continue to help in the community and local businesses? Be part of the Chamber.

I was fortunate to work for a company that knows the importance of being an active member of the chamber of commerce. I was given the leeway to participate in committees of the Chamber. Contacts were made at every meeting or event. I believe the growth that was made by the company was in a large part by being seen and meeting with people at these events. As time went on I kept a business card file with me. When a customer asked if I knew of some type of service they needed I went to my card file that I had collected at chamber events and was able to recommend someone. The same was done for me.

As an individual member, I can still see my friends at the monthly breakfast, ribbon cuttings, after hours and committee meeting. I can still contribute of my time helping the Chamber. I can still meet new business representatives and learn about their business. I can learn from participation what is going on in the community. I can still recommend businesses that are members of the Chamber to people that ask about services.

So, what can I do in retirement? Keep doing what I was, but in a relaxed manner.
