Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Thank You from Joe Culligan "Thank you all for your generous prayers, support, and encouragement! The people of MMOC have been incredibly welcoming throughout my stay. It has been a privilege to have

been with you this summer. I have learned so much! I am eagerly looking forward to my upcoming year of Seminary formation, as well as the opportunities I'll have to come back and visit! Thank you, God bless!" Joe's seminary address is... St. Francis de Sales Seminary 3257 South Lake Drive St. Francis, WI 53235 The Solemnity of The Assumption of the Virgin Mary There will be Mass at 7:30 am, 12noon and 5:30 pm on Thursday, August 15. This is a Holy Day of Obligation. To help with Liturgical Ministry positions, please sign up online through our website www.mmoclacrose.com and click on Ministry Scheduler at the top right of the home page, or call the Parish office at 788-5483, ext. 2. MMOC Small Faith-Sharing Groups As Catholic Christians we are called to a deep, personal relationship with Jesus Christ. We desire to experience his love, mercy, and peace. We are charged to be witnesses to the gospel and share it with the world. Are you hearing this call, feeling this desire, and ready to be a witness? Then consider joining a Catholic Christian Outreach (CCO) faith-sharing group. These groups of 5-8 people meet weekly to review and discuss the lessons of this program over a period of 36 weeks. There is some outside preparation required. The CCO program will take you on the journey of discovering who Jesus is and developing a deep, meaningful relationship with him. Several opportunities are available starting in September, so please respond by September 1st. Identify your preference and then contact the group leader with your name, contact information, and any questions you may have.

Tuesday morning (8:15-9:45 a.m.) This group is open to men and women of the parish. Led by Sue Halter: [email protected] or 608-769-4029.

TBD: Tuesday or Wednesday evening (6:30-8:00 p.m.) This group is open to women of the parish. Led by Linda Schwartz: [email protected] or 608-792-0351.

Wednesday evening (6:45-8:15 p.m.) This group is open to women of the parish. Led by Lisa Doering: [email protected] or 608-769-2894.

Thursday evening (6:00-7:30 p.m.) This group is open to men of the parish. Led by Peter Schmitz: [email protected] and 608-780-4181.

Food Baskets for August Catholic Charities is grateful for all the food donations and is most in need of School snacks like crackers, cookies, pretzels, etc.; pop top items such as hearty soups, veggies, beef stews, hearty soups, canned meats, and complete boxed/canned meals. Silver Circle The Silver Circle pot luck will be August 22. All seniors are welcome. If you are unable to bring any food, come anyway, we never run out. Doors open at 11am. The meal will be served at 11:45am. If you need a ride call the office, 788-5483 ext. 5. Calling All Crafters! We are looking for gifted parishioners who are crafty and would like to donate their special homemade crafts to our craft area at the 2018 MMOC Cookie Walk in December. Now is the time to begin thinking of your special projects. Please contact Vickie Kloss at 788-4828, Judy Wuensch at 788-6453, or Emily Waller at 788-0710 with your ideas or questions. BOFT Maintenance Goals The water chilled air conditioning unit in the rectory failed Friday, July 26, and a technician came Tuesday morning, July 30. The "band aid" repairs for our 1962 Trane unit will cost approximately $7,000 -- labor ($3,000) and parts ($4,000). The parish was informed that another customer was dealing with a similar issue and eventually ended up paying $19,000 for additional repairs...and was still left with a 60 year old unit. Additional options are being sought for the rectory A/C unit. This is another example of the series of items we are facing with our aging buildings as we prepare for Phase IV of Building Our Future Together.

United in the Bonds of Marriage Congratulations to Kenneth Dux and Karlie Loewen, who were married on July 27, 2019. May the love they share be a living witness of how much God loves the world.

Wedding Banns (III) Zackery Woods (MMOC) and Rachel Mickelson on August 10, 2019.

Onalaska), and Cathedral Elementary School (located in La Crosse) these programs provide a high-quality early childhood education starting at three years old. We are committed to helping all families that want to send their children to Aquinas Catholic Schools, regardless of financial ability. NEEDED: Weekend Sacristans Volunteers are needed to prepare the sacred vessels before Mass, tend to them afterward, and give attention to a variety of other items. Generosity of time and the ability to manage the sanctuary steps are requirements. Sacristans arrive for Mass about 20+ minutes beforehand and remain an additional 15 minutes afterward. As with all liturgical ministries, training is offered until there is a level of comfort and scheduling needs are respected; for example, volunteers choose their Mass preference, can “block off” weekends they are unavailable, and can request substitutes when less timely events arise. There is a need at all three 3 weekend Masses. Please contact the parish secretary at 788-5483 x 2.

NEEDED: Weekday Sacristans Volunteers are needed to unlock the church and prepare everything for 7:30 am weekday Masses. Sacristans arrive at 6:30-6:45 am, turn on the lights, prepare the sacred vessels before the 7:05 am Rosary, and remain after Mass an additional 10+ minutes to prepare for the next day. Volunteers are asked to cover a full week about once a month. Generosity and flexibility of time is needed, especially as extra items arise such as funerals or special Mass schedules. The current team of weekday volunteers is helpful for training and ongoing support to substitute for each other. Please contact Fr. Konopa for more information: 788-5483 x 7.

Mobile Meals Volunteers needed to deliver meals for August 19-25. Please email Sue Moyle: [email protected] or call 787-0076 or at if you are able to help

us with this worthwhile service. If you have any questions please feel free to call Sue. US Bishops’ Pastoral Letter on Combatting Racism During their November 2018 General Assembly, the US Bishops approved a Pastoral Letter addressing the evil of racism. Entitled “Open Wide Our Hearts: The Enduring Call to Love,” it asks us to recall that we are all brothers and sisters, all equally made in the image of God. The letter and many accompanying pastoral resources are posted at usccb.org/racism. In Response to Recent Scandals The USCCB has launched a new website highlighting the importance of prevention, protection and accountability in response to the ongoing effort to eradicate clergy sexual abuse. This new site serves as a resource detailing the steps the American bishops are taking to confront this crisis. On the site, readers can browse through the layers of the Holy Father’s Motu Proprio, the 2002 Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People and its progress, as well as numerous resources to address any instance of clergy sexual abuse. Explore the website by visiting: usccbprevention.org Garden Sharing Program A table has been set up in the gathering space of church to share your extra garden produce. Please feel free to donate and take produce. Any extra will be shared with our neighbors at Place of Grace and Catholic Charities. Thank you for sharing your abundance!

Building Our Future Together

Church Altar Relocation Survey Phase IV of Building Our Future Together will give special con-sideration to the maintenance and enhancements of our beautiful church. One extra consideration is relo-cating the main altar to the same level as the ambo-pulpit and chairs. For the month of July, we have used a small, wood altar at this location as an exper-iment. Now, it's time to gather opinions in a formal process. Please visit our parish website (or other social me-dia) to click a link and answer a brief survey. Hard copies of the survey are available in the Gathering Space of church with a “return box.” While we're happy to receive hard copies and enter the data, it would reduce the workload considerably if those with online access would use the electronic option. The survey will conclude Sunday, Aug. 11 and it will take time to process the data.

We are seeking the following information: -I am a registered member of Mary, Mother of the

Church. -I am a liturgical minister, and my ministry places me

within the sanctuary. -I have served in the liturgical ministries during the

trial period of a new placement of the altar, and I have experienced the following advantages/disadvantages…

-I prefer to sit in the front 1/3, middle 1/3, or back 1/3 of church.

-When standing, I can see the action at the new placement of the altar…better, about the same, or not as well.

-When kneeling, I can see the action at the new placement of the altar…better, about the same, or not as well.

-I am interested in seeing drawings of the potential change with the tabernacle under the cross.

-Overall opinion: -I prefer the new placement and hope we make it

permanent. -I see the benefits outweighing the negatives, but I’m OK if there is no change.

-It does not matter to me. -I would rather keep the sanctuary as it is, but I’m

OK with a change. -I do not prefer the new placement and hope we

do not make it permanent. Please share the reasons for your opinion and any other comments you would like to make. So far, the discussions – “for” and “against” – have been marked with charity. In the same spirit, please complete the survey only once! Thank

you! Teenagers and children are invited to complete the survey, too. Please remember a memento in your pray-ers for Building Our Future Together!
