KING & QUEEN CONTEST

It’s time again for the KING and QUEEN contest!

YOU can be crowned St. Linus Fiesta KING and QUEEN!

PAGE 3 La Transfiguración del Señor EYEWITNESSES

Today, the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, is a day of eyewitness accounts. The first, a vision reported by the prophet Daniel, was well known to Jesus and his apostles. The vision account was written in quite mystical and figurative language. It is a vision of heaven, powerful and memorable. There are flames of fire, burning wheels, the Ancient One, and a Son of Man. Clearly, Daniel saw something. But was it a dream? Was it real? Was it merely a clever myth? Peter wants no such confusion about his vision! We are told in Matthew’s Gospel what he and his friends James and John saw when they went up on the mountain with Jesus one day. Jesus warned the three witnesses to tell no one until “the Son of Man has been raised from the dead” (Matthew 17:9). Lest readers of one of the Gospels discount the story or simply write it off as a pious myth, Peter gives his own account of the Transfiguration of Jesus in his second letter to the church. He writes with authority, as an eyewitness. He reports this message from God concerning Jesus: “This is my Son, my beloved, with whom I am well pleased,” and he assures us that the message is “altogether reliable” (2 Pe-ter 1:17, 19).

Question of the Week

First Reading — I saw one like a Son of man coming on the clouds of heaven (Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14). Psalm — The Lord is king, the most high over all the earth (Psalm 97). Second Reading — Be attentive to the prophetic mes-sage, as to a lamp shining in a dark place (2 Peter 1:16-19). Gospel — Jesus was transfigured, and his clothes became white as light (Matthew 17:1-9).

Question for Children: How do you show that you listen to Jesus?

Question for Adults: When have you had a “transfiguration” experience? What was it like?

Monday: Nm 11:4b-15; Ps 81:12-17; Mt 14:13-21 Tuesday: Nm 12:1-13; Ps 51:3-7, 12-13; Mt 14:22-36 or Mt 15:1-2, 10-14 Wednesday: Nm 13:1-2, 25 — 14:1, 26-29a, 34-35; Ps 106:6-7ab, 13-14, 21-23; Mt 15:21-28 Thursday: 2 Cor 9:6-10; Ps 112:1-2, 5-9; Jn 12:24-26 Friday: Dt 4:32-40; Ps 77:12-16, 21; Mt 16:24-28 Saturday: Dt 6:4-13; Ps 18:2-4, 47, 51; Mt 17:14-20 Sunday: 1 Kgs 19:9a, 11-13a; Ps 85:9-14; Rom 9:1-5; Mt 14:22-33

Treasures from our Tradition

As the Latin Mass evolved in the first six centuries, the central prayer, what the Greeks called the anaphora and what we call today the Eucharistic Prayer, became fairly standard almost everywhere in the West. What we now know as Eucharistic Prayer I, or the Roman Canon, took a complex shape, not at all like the fluid and spontaneous prayers of early Rome, but a real architectural construc-tion. The city of Rome was in a terrible condition by that time, and a series of political upheavals, plagues, and in-vasions swept through. Not much of Rome’s former glory was left standing, except for the pope, who became a symbol of protection and hope for the troubled people. The structures of law and administration were swept away in the chaos, and the pope gradually assumed authority to restore and maintain order. Soon, the public liturgy of Rome became the city’s only glory. The Romans wanted “good order” not only in their civic life, but in their lit-urgy. One prayer, increasingly enriched by music (although when the music tried to overtake the prayer the pope banned musical instruments entirely) was the new rule of the day. That one prayer, the Roman Canon, was solidly in place when the first liturgical book we have, the Leonine Sacramentary of 540, was compiled.

The Transfiguration of the Lord

Today’s feast of the Transfiguration presents the full force of God’s power. In the rare moments when humans are permitted to encounter God’s intense fullness, the human reaction is the same: fear. The prophet Daniel is so frightened by his visions that he falls flat on his face in terror. Today’s Gospel re-ports that Peter, James, and John were “very much afraid” when they saw Jesus transfigured on the mountain. They too fell prostrate in fear. These mighty revelations of God’s bril-liant majesty have a paralyzing effect on those who wit-ness them. God does not prefer to terrify us, however. God chooses only rare moments to reveal the divine glory, and then sends witnesses to the rest of us so we can believe without fear. Saint Peter’s letter advises us to be attentive to God’s witnesses. Their testimony is true. Their words renew our hearts and transform our lives.

TOTALITY

If you are currently in a civil marriage, but were not mar-ried in the Catholic Church, you can receive the Sacra-ment of Matrimony (marriage convalidation). St. Linus invites couples into the life of the Church and continue to bless them on their journey by celebrating regularized unions with group weddings (recognizing numerous con-validations in one celebration), which can also lessen the financial burden for couples. Group Weddings will take place on November 18, 2017 at 10:00 AM. The fee is $200.00. This will be a bilingual mass. A wedding recep-tion will take place in the McNulty Hall, following the ceremony. The celebration of the Sacrament of Marriage can be a truly enriching and wonderful experience. If you wish to begin the preparation and participate in the Group Wed-dings, you must register on or before the deadline of August 16, 2017. If you have further questions, please contact: Deacon Chuck and Marge Baker (562) 921-6649 or visit our website www.stlinus-church.org

Safeguard the Children

Did You Know? Back to school safety tips. There is a lot that goes into preparing for the new school year, and it’s important to remember to talk about safety. These are a few tips to consider: (1) meet all of your child’s teach-ers, (2) discuss school bathroom behavior (no one should go into a stall with a child for any reason), (3) occasionally walk your children to their class instead of using the carpool line. To request a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Three Things that Simply Must Be Done” email [email protected] or call (213) 637-7227.

Today is Amen Sunday. Amen Sunday is an opportu-nity for us to celebrate and highlight the progress of our Capital Campaign. It also gives us a chance to bring in our pledge and stand in solidarity with our parish and the mission of our campaign. If you would like to bring in your campaign pledge envelopes or your checks towards your commitment it is very welcomed and appreciated. If you have not pledged we also welcome your monetary donations.

To purchase tickets, fill out the order form, which can be picked up on your way out of the church (next to the bulle-tins, download from our website, or pick up a copy in the parish office. www.stlinus-church.org

GOD’S MERCY Although the disciples’ experience on the mountain was frightening, our merciful Lord does not want fear to overshadow the miracle they witnessed. Jesus touched

them, saying, “Rise, and do not be afraid.” God’s words from the cloud overhead were similarly encouraging: “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” God lovingly reassures us, confirming Je-sus’ identity as the Son of Man and inviting us to pay at-tention to the One who comes to save us. Saint Peter, an eyewitness to the event, declares that his testimony is “altogether reliable.” We can depend on his word. Saint Peter hopes his words act like a “lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morn-ing star rises in your hearts.” Thanks be to God, we can rely on the life-changing experiences of others to help transform our own lives. We may not ever have intimidat-ing mountaintop revelations like Peter, James, and John, so we listen to them as witnesses of God’s majesty. All of our readings today remind us that God gives us the Word to believe and live, and sends us the words of Daniel, Pe-ter, and Matthew to encourage us.

Religious Education News Welcome Adrian Flores Confirmation Coordinator

My name is Adrian Flores and I'm excited to announce that I will be the new St. Linus Con-firmation Coordinator. I’m originally from Baldwin Park, California and this past year I relocated from the from the frozen tundra I called home for 7 years, Saint Paul, MN. Al-though I do miss the snow at times, I don't miss shoveling it. A little bit about me, I come from a large family of 8. I graduated from John Paul the Great Catholic University with a BS in Media Communications and I also work full time for an interna-tional ministry called NET Ministries. On my down time, you can find me playing guitar, coaching wrestling, tak-ing on mountains or planning my next European adven-ture. To all you high school youth who I will interact with this upcoming year, know that I'm excited to be a part of this community and that all of you will be in my prayers as we walk together preparing you for Confirmation. Par-ents, feel free to reach out if you have any questions and I look forward to meeting you in the weeks to come. Thank you and God Bless.
