ABOUT THE BLOCK

Here in the UK, it is a tradition to wear a Poppy as a symbol of remembrance on Armistice Day, 11th November.

I love seeing Poppies growing in the wild and am always amazed how they manage to look so bold and strong though their petals are fragile.

My block is made with iconic Liberty Tana Lawn and their Lasenby quilting cotton. I have been working with Liberty for my first book which is due out Spring 2020 and love the delicacy of their floral prints.

MAKING THE POPPY BLOCK

Four-at-a-time Half Square Triangles

1.Place a Mitsi Valeria and Oxford Fern White 6” squares RST.

2. Sew a seam all the way around the square at ¼”.

3. Cut across both diagonals to make 4 units (Figure 1).

4. Press seams towards the darker fabric.

5. Trim down to 3½” lining up the 45-degree line on your ruler (Figure 2). NB: I prefer to make a larger square to begin with so that there is room to trim down.

6. Repeat steps 1-5 with the Capel and second Oxford Fern White 6” squares.

7. Repeat steps 1-5 with Wiltshire and Betsy Ann 6” squares (Figure 3).

8. Repeat steps 1-5 with the second Mitsi Valeria and Essex Linen 6” squares.

You will now have a total of 16 HST units.

Snowball Corner

1. Take one of the units created in step 8 and position an Oxford Fern Black 1¾” square across the corner of the Essex Linen RST. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the smaller square and sew along the drawn line. Trim away the outer corner ¼” away from the sewn line (Figure 4) and press towards the Oxford Fern Black. Repeat to make 4 units.

Assembling the block

1.Lay the units out as shown in Figure 5.

2. Sew together in rows. Press seams in Rows 1 and 3 to the left. Press seams in Rows 2 and 4 to the right.

3. Join the rows, nesting seams.
