Intended to be the ‘glamour‘ coin of the .changeover, the first 50c was struck to a higher silver purity than any coin since WWII – 80% fine. Treasury warned that the issue of such a coin for circulation was fraught with danger, and within a short time, rising silver prices saw the RAM cease production in late 1966. By 1968, with the silver value of the coin rising to 76c, it was withdrawn from circulation. When the Government, which resisted public pressure in 1967 and 1968 for the concept of a 50c coin to be scrapped, did unveil the new 50c, it was neither round nor struck from precious metal –
rendering the 80% Silver Round 50c a unique, one-year-only type.
