RF. Alvarez creates paintings, drawings, and art objects
that serve as vehicles for a utopian vision in which
environments are lush and green and bodies are
confident and safe. The world-building inherent in his
work is queer in nature, with references to antiquity as a
sort of idealized past and subject matter that often
includes totems of masculinity and femininity. His visual
language meanders through references to Pre-Columbian
sculpture, modernism, and Greek pottery and arrives at
a concise narrative about the body and its relationship to
its environment, its society and its heritage.
Born in 1988 in San Antonio, Texas, RF. Alvarez
received his BA from Wesleyan University and has
exhibited works in solo shows with Martha’s
Contemporary in Austin, Uprise Art in New York City,
and Martin & Brockett in Los Angeles.
He currently lives and works in Austin, Texas.
Ana Vidovic is an extraordinary talent with formidable
gifts taking her place amongst the elite musicians of the
world today. She is known for her beautiful tone, precise
technique, well-defined phrasing and thoughtful artistry
and musicianship.
Ms. Vidovic comes from the small town of Karlovac near
Zagreb, Croatia, and started playing guitar at the age of
5. At age 7, she gave her first public performance and at
the age of 11 she was performing internationally.
Ms. Vidovic has won an impressive number of prizes and
international competitions including first prizes in the
Albert Augustine International Competition in Bath,
England, the Fernando Sor competition in Rome, Italy
and the Francisco Tarrega competition in Benicasim,
Spain.

The Javier Niño Memorial Scholarship Fund at Austin Classical Guitar exists to
honor the memory of a wonderful young man who brought joy through beauty and
kindness to countless people during his lifetime, and to support young classical guitarists in
Austin, Texas through scholarship lessons and other means who show great promise and
who will benefit from access to expert instruction and mentorship. For the 2021/2022
school year, ACG has chosen not one, but two recipients for this award. Applications came
in from fabulous young guitarists across AISD and two incredible musicians stood out.
Juan Itzep from McCallum Fine Arts Academy and Edan Tapia at Akins High School are
both senior members and leaders of their respective guitar ensembles. They have both been
playing since middle school and express a deep passion for the guitar and connecting to
others with the music they make. Juan Itzep shared a little bit about his musical journey,
“I started playing guitar seven years ago in middle school. Ferocity filled my
chest as I entered my first guitar class in sixth grade. I felt a spark that opened
the door to a passion I didn’t know would become my whole life. I was a
quick learner at the beginning and surely enough the passion grew larger and
larger as time went on, like a snowball running down a hill. When I started at
McCallum, I started having second thoughts. I was nervous to be in a new
environment with new people of different cultures and backgrounds. But my
passion for guitar overpowered that anxiety…”
