FRIDAY, 26 th MAY 2017 AICS NEWSLETTER 1 From the Principal Assalaamu Alaikum Warahmatulahi Wabarakatu Dear Parents, We are in the second half of Term 2 and entering a critical time in your child’s schooling as this is the time for assessments and examinations. Primary students are starting their assessment period and will be focused on completing these to the best of their ability. Staff have been working tirelessly to ensure the assessments are meaningful and accurately reflect the teaching and learning experienced this year. Meanwhile Years 7-11 will commence their Half Yearly Examinations on 29 th May and finish on 16 th June. Examination timetables for different year levels have been sent to parents and issued to students. For Year 11, this is their first opportunity to both experience and excel under HSC-style examinations. With students only sitting one exam a day and classes suspended for this time it gives them every chance to study and succeed. Years 7-10 have their examinations in the hall as well as in regular classrooms. They will be under exam conditions and any misbehaviour that may affect their or their peers’ results will be dealt with by removing them from the room. Each student has been given a copy of their timetable and the rules in place for this important period. School Fees I wish to remind all parents of their obligation to ensure that all school fees are paid within the first two weeks of each term. The school fees paid by parents play a major role in enabling the AICS to meet its operating costs. Therefore their prompt payment within the specified time is highly appreciated. Semester Reports Semester Reports will be released in Weeks 1 and 2 of Term 3 and the opportunity to meet with staff will be provided at this time. Of course, if any issues arise, please don’t hesitate to phone the office and arrange for an appointment with our staff. If appointments aren’t made it is unfortunately very difficult to accommodate ‘drop-in’ appointments as our staff are usually on class, in meetings or preparing for lessons. School Times and Attendance During Ramadan School will start at the normal time of 8.25 am. However, school will finish earlier than normal. Primary classes will finish school between 2:20 pm. and 2:30 pm. Secondary classes will end at 2.40 pm. All parents are requested to pick up their children promptly after school as supervision will not be provided after 3.00 pm. All students are required to attend school punctually and regularly. Students will not be given permission to stay away from school or leave earlier than the dismissal times because they are fasting. Ramadan Karim The month of Ramadan - the month of blessing and mercy has arrived. I would like to wish everyone Ramadan Mubarak and pray to Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala that this Ramadan be most beneficial for all of us so that we increase in eman and taqwa. Please also remember to make dua for all our Muslim brothers and sisters facing hardships around the world. Iftar time is the best time for your dua to be accepted. Year 11 Half Yearly Examinations The Half Yearly Examinations for Year 11 will run from 29 May 2017 to 9 June 2017. The timetables have been emailed to parents and have been given to the students also. Please be mindful that examinations are conducted in keeping with HSC Examinations. Therefore, when your child does not have an examination they are not required to be at school. However, the day your child has an examination, parents will be responsible for taking their child home after the examination. Students will not be allowed to stay at school after their examination. Year 7-10 Half Yearly Examinations The Half Yearly Examinations for Year 7 and 8, will be held between the 13 June and the 16 June. The Half Yearly Examinations for Year 9 and 10 will be held between 9 June and 16 June. The timetables have been distributed to all parents via email and have been given out to all students. Please motivate your child to work hard and do their best so that they develop confidence in their abilities. School Uniform Appearance plays a vital role in the wellbeing and confidence of each student. The school diary shows what uniform students need to wear and what type of haircut is allowed for the boys in the school. Chewing Gum Chewing gum has created a great deal of mess in the school. Therefore, the school is being very strict in regards to chewing gum and in the Secondary School students are being given after school detention if they are chewing gum. Chewing gum is totally prohibited in AICS.

Special Primary School Assembly Students of 4A contributed to creating a wonderful assembly in Week 3 of Term 2 this year. The assembly was dedicated to welcoming the blessed Islamic month of Ramadan. The students showcased all the necessary practices that we should perform in this month. The most memorable part of the presentation was

when all of the students created a rendition of the ‘Ramadan Song’ which was composed by the Deen Squad. We congratulate students of 4A on their efforts. Ms Naureen- Inam Year 4A class teacher

Year One Excursion to The Rocks

On Monday the 15th of May the Year One students partook an excursion to The Rocks. Here, we explored Aboriginal cultures. For many children it was their first visit to The Rocks so we arrived wide eyed in enthusiastic anticipation of what would occur. When we arrived, we were blessed by an Aboriginal elder with the white ochre to protect us on our journey and to remind us of Mother Nature. We then begun our walking journey around The Rocks. Our guides showed us all sorts of wonderful things. We tasted the sweet nectar of certain bushes, we peeled back bark to understand how the aboriginal people created nets for fishing, we found beaches that were hidden in plain view, we spotted shapes in trees that guided Aboriginal people to make boomerangs, we listened to shells and the stories that they can tell us, we found grooves in trees that can be used to make canoes, we found leaking rocks that allow the aboriginal people to create paints and we smelled bushes that are used as medicine. But most of all, we began to understand how connected the Aboriginal people are with the land. There wasn’t a bush, tree or rock that didn’t have a story or relevance behind it. The children were enthralled throughout the entire experience, but the walking took its toll and all too soon it was time to come back to AICS with many the napping child on the bus ride home. It was a day that neither children nor teachers will forget anytime soon. Adam Herborn Class 1B Teacher

Kindergarten Mufti Day feedback

Kindergarten had a very exciting day during the Mufti / Abaya day. The entire school got all dressed up in their traditional wear to show case their cultural heritage and backgrounds. Kindergarten students got very excited seeing all these different cultures in their classrooms. At lunch students pre-ordered their yummy food and then had it delivered right to their door steps from the year 12 students themselves, what a treat! When the bell rang for Kindergartners to go outside, they had the opportunity to see a lot of various cultural foods. They were very excited to take part in purchasing other fantastic foods on display such as the fairy floss and Krispy Kreme doughnuts. Overall, it was a marvelous day for our students!
