How do you get experience if nobody will hire you without it? You have heard it a thousand times before . . . you need experience to get a mine job and you need a job to get experience . Gaining experience is more readily available than you may think . Here are some suggestions:

• Know exactly what career you are looking for in mining and work toward building your skill set and knowledgearound this decision

• Do civil work to gain experience in the area you are interested

• If you have a civil/trade background, get a job in a mining town first . It won’t take long until you are introduced tosomeone that can help you get on site

• Take a job delivering to the mines, working in the bar of the mining town

• A trade can give you more options . Try an apprenticeship/ traineeship and get a trade behind you

• Look at doing shut down work over a 6 month period

• Contact quarries

• Most mining jobs are found in mining towns

• Get experience with a company that contracts to a mine or lower tier suppliers

• Think about the oil and gas industry as an option

There are many different mining jobs available for entry level applicants . The types of jobs vary and cover a broad range of positions . Mine sites are a hive of activity with many operating 24 hours a day . This means that there are plenty of opportunities to land yourself an entry level position .

RequirementsThe requirements of employment differ in every state . The basics of ensuring you are mine-ready can include:• Being physically fit for the job (this can be determined through a Coal Board Medical)• The ability to pass a drug and alcohol test . These will be ongoing for the term of your employment . Mining compa-

nies are very strict on this type of compliance . You will be working with and around heavy machinery, large mechan-ical and electrical machines, in confined spaces and possibly at heights, and more often than not, if you’re not ‘clean’ you may run the risk of your employment being terminated

• In some states it is a requirement that you pass a police clearance• Complete the Standard 11 Generic Mining Induction

Phone interview tips

With an increasing number of people wanting FIFO jobs, a telephone interview is frequently the only way of assessing a candidate in the early stages of the recruitment cycle . If an employer or mining recruitment agency schedules a telephone interview to discuss a particular position, it should be treated with the same importance as a face-to-face meeting .

Consider the following tips prior to your call• Prepare thoroughly for your call as you would for a face-to-face meeting, whether with an employer or a mining

recruitment agency . Both will be evaluating your suitability to be included on a shortlist of candidates againstspecific criteria .

• Research the company to gain an understanding of its culture and prepare questions that are relevant to the vacancy .

• Agree to a pre-arranged time to enable you to discuss the position thoroughly . Taking an unexpected call from amining recruitment agency or HR department will mean you are not prepared and may not respond to pertinentquestions effectively .

• Keep your resume in clear view, on the top of your desk, or tape it to the wall near the phone, so it’s at your fingertipswhen you need to answer questions .

• Have a short list of your accomplishments available to review .

• Unless you’re sure your mobile phone service is going to be perfect, consider using a landline rather than yourmobile phone to avoid a dropped call or static on the line .

• Don’t interrupt the interviewer .

• Be on time as you would for any interview . Don’t allow the call to reach your voicemail or you may eliminate yourselffrom the process at the first hurdle .

• Speak slowly and clearly . If you can’t hear the recruiter, drop hints that they aren’t speaking clearly or loud enoughby politely asking them to repeat themselves . If this makes you uncomfortable at all you can always blame it on yourphone: “I’m really sorry, it’s hard to hear you and the volume on my phone just won’t go up!” .

• Remember – you can’t be seen . That means that anything you say cannot be interpreted by your body language . Beware of jokes or sarcastic remarks that would have been harmless had he seen your facial expression . Maintainyour professionalism; stay on target with the interview topics and focus on the key information about you that willget you hired .

• Demonstrate interest and enthusiasm . A positive attitude goes a long way . Both mining recruitment agencies andmining employers are looking for candidates who demonstrate optimism and company cultural fit . Remember, youwon’t have the advantage of being able to observe body language . Listen carefully, pause before responding to eachquestion, adopt a clear tone and remain professional .

• Use positive phrases, for example, ‘I will’ and ‘I can’, rather than ‘possibly’ or ‘I might do’ . Eliminate any suggestion ofdoubt over your ability to do the job .

• You will normally have the opportunity to ask questions about the company . Prepare two or three questions thatdemonstrate your research . They may be questions about the company’s history or focused on a new article youfound during your research .

• Always ‘close’ at the end of the call . If you are interested in progressing to the next stage, let the recruiter or employerknow . Be enthusiastic and try and ascertain when the face-to-face interviews will take place, who makes the finaldecision in the interviewing process and when the successful candidate is expected to start work .

• Follow up with a ‘thank-you’ e-mail . It reiterates your interest and enthusiasm for the role and may make thedifference in your inclusion on the final shortlist if it’s close between you and another candidate .
