Automatic Gun Release (AGR)Description

The Automatic Gun Release is run when it is desirable to drop the gunupon firing. This tool is designed to fit onto the top sub of the gun. Ashort section of detonating cord runs through the center of the toolbelow the percussion detonator. Several Owen Firing Heads can bethreaded into the top of this tool for detonation of the gun system. Thegun can be activated by either; a Mechanical Impact Firing Head, aSafety Impact Firing Head, Low Pressure/High Pressure, a PressureActivated Firing Head or an Electronic Time Delay Firing Head

Features and Benefits

• allows for immediate release of guns• leaves tubing fully open• eliminates the need to run wireline to release guns• designed for both underbalance or highly overbalanced release

operations• must be run in conjunction with ported sub• positive release mechanism only requires pressure from

detonating cord to release guns.

Specifications

¹ The maximum temperature can be increased to 450°F{ (230°C) by substitutingthe 90durometer Nitrile O-rings with 90 durometer Viton O-rings. Refer to the Time vs Temperaturechart for Explosives to confirm any explosives requirements.

Note: Do not use the tubular collar No-Go, TC-170-2375-000 or the TC-170-2875-000 whenusing this Automatic Gun Release. Use the Impact No-Go, TC-010-0022-110 (2-3/8 tubular) orTC-010-0029-110 (2-7/8 tubular) which attaches directly to a drop bar firing impact body andfalls away with the guns when released, leaving no restriction in the tubular.

Warning: The assembly of this tool requires the handling of anExplosive Device and all safety precautions must be adhered toand observed!

Note: Check all items against the parts list to be sure of having thecorrect parts and quantities.

Note: Check for any damage to the parts which would prevent thepart from being assembled correctly, easily and safely.

1.0 Assembly

1.1 Insert the API Seal Ring (item #7) into the groove cut into the EUE threads of theUpper Housing (item #1). Install the O-ring (item #10) on the Locking Collar (item #2).Apply grease to the O-ring, outer surface and the inner bore of the Locking Collar. Applya light coat of grease to the inner bore of the Upper Housing, then insert the LockingCollar into the Upper Housing as shown below.

1.2 Install O-rings (item #10) on the Collet Fingers Sub (item #3). Apply grease to thefinger surfaces and the O-rings, then insert and snap in place in the Upper Housing. With the Collet Finger Sub properly seated, slide the Locking Collar downward until it

bottoms out, locking the fingers in place. The distance from the top edge of the LockingCollar to the top edge of the Upper Housing should be 5-1/8" (130.2 mm).

1.3 Slide the Shear Ring (item #4) over the shaft of the Center Stem (item #5) until thethreaded holes in the ring are aligned with the holes in the stem. Thread in both BrassScrews (item #6), to secure the Shear Ring in position. Do this step before installing theO-rings. Install the O-rings (items #8 and #9) on the Center Stem.

1.4 Apply grease to the O-rings and threads on the Center Stem. Insert and thread theCenter Stem into the assembled Auto-Release Housing, and tighten. The bottom of thestem threads should be flush with the inside bottom of the Collet Sub.

1.5 Cut a piece of detonating cord (80 gr) to a length of 9-1/8" (231.8 mm) and crimp abi-directional booster to one end. Slide the detonating cord through the Booster SupportTube (item #11) until the booster is flush with the top of the tube. Crimp the tube to thedetonating cord. Crimp a second bi-directional booster to other end of the detonatingcord.

1.6 Insert the Detonating Cord Assembly into the Center Stem of the Auto-Gun Releaseuntil the tube is fully seated in the stem.

Note: The bottom booster should be flush with the bottom end of thestem.

1.7 The Automatic Gun Release is now complete and ready for the PercussionDetonator and an Owen Firing Impact assembly. (for example, a Mechanical Impact,Safety Impact [LP-HP] or Pressure Activated)

Warning: When inserting the Percussion Detonator andinstalling the Firing Impact, the assembled Auto-Gun Releasemust not be attached to a perforating gun assembly!
