Retro homages still work in the automotive industry when the vehicle retains the look, feel and excitement of the nostalgic car, while add-ing cool improvements such as tech, safety and power. Ford works that theme well with its 2012 take on its 1969 Muscle-Pony, the Mustang Boss 302, a car it calls, “a race car with a license plate”.

The 1969 Boss 302 Mus-

tang, designed by legend-ary engineer Larry Shinoda, was notable visually with a reflective “c-stripe”, front spoiler, rear deck wing, hor-izontal rear window shades and a blackout hood. Vari-ous stories about how the name came about include the Ford line that when Shi-noda was asked what proj-ect he was working on, he answered: “the boss’s car” because the project was a secret. Another legend tells that Shinoda had called it the “Boss” in reverence to the new President of Ford, Semon “Bunkie” Knudsen, who had brought Shinoda over from GM when Knud-son moved to The Blue Oval. But, from a marketing view-

point, the term “Boss” might have been a way to capitalize on a hip 1960s slang term for awesome or super cool – “Boss”. The Boss had a short 2-year run but was popular as a street racer and on the track, as Parnelli Jones won the 1970 Trans-Am racing season opener in a Boss 302 and captured the season championship.

Nostalgic appeal with more power

The 2012 Boss 302 exceeds the power of its 1969 name-sake, as this year’s version stampedes out 444 hors-es and 380 lbs-ft of torque while the original was good for 290hp and 290 lbs-ft of torque. Both vehicles were

powered by 302ci engines, though the 2012 model uses a 5.0-liter engine, which is actually closer to 305.1 ci.

One look at the Boss 302 and the nostalgia, muscle and style of the original are recalled, but with a cool rear spoiler and deeper front air dam. The unique fascia and grille are highlighted by the blocked-off fog lamp open-ings and aggressive lower splitter, reminiscent of the historical Boss 302R race car.

Manufactured in Wind-sor, Ontario and assembled in Flat Rock, Michigan, the 2012 Boss 302 weighs in at a

at a confident 3632 pounds and measures 188.1 inches long, 73.9 inches wide and 55.1 inches high on a 107.1-inch wheelbase.

Exterior features include the special hood stripe, solar tinted glass, power windows and locks, side and rear exit quad exhaust, rear quarter mounted AM/FM antenna, LED sequential tail lamps, special BOSS 302 engine cover, deck spoiler, power dome hood and the BOSS 302 grille and fascia.

Looks, feel and sounds like a racecar

Boss power obviously comes from a 302 (well, in this case a 305) engine. Ford upgraded its 5.0-liter V-8 engine with new machined intake runners, revised cam-shafts, exhaust ports and combustion chambers and trackworthy engine controls to easily smoke the tires of this rear-wheel-drive icon. Mated to a six-speed man-ual transmission, there is muscle available at the driv-er’s will to accelerate effort-lessly in any road situation and to control any track it visits. And it SOUNDS like a race car should, with a throaty growl.

The 1969 Boss blazed down the track with times of 6.5 seconds from zero to 60, and 14.9 seconds for a quarter-mile. My track tests showed new school beats old school with runs of 4.2 seconds in the sprint and 12.5 seconds for the quarter in less than ideal track con-ditions, and tuned only as one you would drive off the car lot.

In quick maneuvers, the power assist steering is re-sponsive and crisp, as the Boss handles like its racing ancestor and hugs well in

the tightest hairpins, with little rear sway. Braking is sure with Brembo front ro-tors and calipers, four-wheel power disc brakes with four-sensor, four-channel anti-lock braking system and low-expansion brake hoses. Independent MacPherson strut front suspension and a three-link solid axle rear with limited-slip differen-tial and manual adjustable shock damping give good road feel while smoothing out irregularities.

EPA rated at 17mpg in

the city and 26mpg on the highway, a mixed-use test achieved an average of 19.8mpg.

Cabin combines retro, new tech and safety

The cabin is a skilled mix of 1969 energy and 2012 tech, comfort and ergonom-ics. With seating for four, the interior provides a tight 38.5 inches of front headroom and a hunched 34.7 inches in row two; legroom goes 42.4 up front and a child-

proportion 29.8 inches in the second seats; and shoul-der room is 55.3 and 51.6.

Standard interior features include manual air condi-tioning, premium AM/FM stereo with single-CD play-er, special Boss cloth seats, message center, four-gauge cluster, dark aluminum in-strument panel, bright clutch, brake and accelerator pads, tilt Alcantara suede-wrapped steering wheel, 50/50 split-fold rear seat backs and gloss paint center stack and console.

Safety items include dual front airbags, tire pressure monitoring system, LATCH for children, Ford’s Person-al Safety System, Advance Trac for Electronic Stabil-ity Control, SOS-Post Crash Alert System, remote keyless entry system, tire inflation kit, and Securi-Lock passive anti-theft system.

The Boss 302 starts at $40,310. My Competition Orange Boss 302 came with black hood and side reverse C stripes, 19-inch premium painted black wheels and

black cloth BOSS seats. My test vehicle, with $795 add-ed for destination charges stickered at $41,105 for a very “Boss” ride.

Mustang

By ANN M. JOBFor ThE ASSociATEd PrESS

Americans still love rid-ing high above the ground in their vehicles but have been opting for smaller sport util-ity vehicles to save on gaso-line costs.

No wonder, then, that sales of the Nissan Rogue were up 25.1 percent last year from the calendar year before — to 124,543 — and they’re up another 12.4 percent so far this year from the year-ago period.

The pleasantly styled, five-passenger, 2012 Rogue crossover SUV has federal government fuel economy ratings of 23 miles per gal-lon in the city and 28 mpg on highways, which means it’s eighth best in gasoline mile-age among non-hybrid, 2012 SUV nameplates.

The top-selling SUV at Nissan, the Rogue also is nicely sized, maneuverable and has a driver’s seat that provides plenty of height adjustment for small stature drivers.

The Rogue is a recom-mended buy of Consumer Reports with above-average reliability.

It’s also the first non-lux-ury vehicle in the United States to offer an optional “around-the-vehicle” four-camera system that shows, with the touch of a button, a view of the spacing and ad-jacent objects all around the vehicle, as if a single camera were perched high above, looking down.

The system is part of a pricey, $3,900 SL package, though.

Also new for 2012 and considerably lower in price is a Special Edition package that adds a rearview moni-tor, which is an indispens-able aide when the driver is backing up the 5.4-foot-tall Rogue.

This package, including fog lights, satellite radio capabil-ity, privacy glass, aluminum alloy wheels and steering wheel-mounted controls, adds $1,200 to the base starting manufacturer’s sug-gested retail price of $22,895,

resulting in a total $24,095 for a Special Edition, front-wheel drive Rogue.

All Rogues have the same, 170-horsepower, 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine mat-ed to a continuously vari-able transmission (CVT) that a driver operates like an automatic. All-wheel drive is available, and the low-est starting retail price for a Rogue with AWD is $24,195.

Competitors in the com-pact SUV segment include the Ford Escape, which has been extensively revamped for 2013 and has a starting MSRP, including destination charge, of $23,295 with 168-horsepower, 2.5-liter, four cylinder, automatic trans-mission and front-wheel drive. The 2012 Honda CR-V has a starting retail price of $23,325 with 185-horsepow-er four cylinder, five-speed automatic and front-wheel drive.

The test Rogue was a front-wheel drive SV with the SL package added and a window sticker of more than $29,000.

The optional, perforated leather seat material with red accents was a luxu-ry-looking touch, and the nicely cushioned front seats provided comfort. But seat cushions in back were short in length, and the non-tex-tured ceiling material inside that looked to be just a bit above the “mouse fur” ap-pearance found in some car trunks didn’t impress.

The dashboard — mostly black plastic with a singu-lar silver strip under the ra-dio preset buttons — was OK but not ritzy.

To be sure, the Rogue SV with SL package had other equipment of note, such as 18-inch wheels, power glass sunroof, navigation system and the 360-degree camera system.

But the 5-inch navigation screen seemed small com-pared with factory-installed nav screens in other vehi-cles. As an example, the 2013 Dodge Dart is offered with an 8.4-inch screen.

The Rogue’s 360-degree camera system seems like

a novelty item. The system mainly helped show how close the vehicle was to the curb and to the car in back during parallel parking ma-neuvers.

At 5 feet 4, I could extend my legs in the second row without making front-seat riders move up their seats, and the Rogue’s maximum 57.9 cubic feet of cargo space, while less than the Escape’s 68.1 cubic feet, is adequate and useful. I appreciated that I could set the driver’s seat up so high, I could see virtually all of the hood.

The Rogue moved through traffic well and impressed with its nimble character as it wound around multi-level parking garages with ease, slipped into parking spaces easily and felt “right sized” overall.

The test Rogue weighed some 3,325 pounds, so it seemed light on its feet. Pas-sengers felt some weight shift as the Rogue went around corners and curves, and the tall ride height, while providing good views out,

can make the Rogue feel a bit tippy.

But the test vehicle didn’t become unbalanced, and traction control and elec-tronic stability control read-ily activated during aggres-sive driving on mountain roads. Other standard safety equipment includes elec-tronic brakeforce distribu-tion and antilock brakes as well as six air bags.

The 2012 Rogue earned four out of five stars in fron-tal crash protection and five out of five for side crash pro-tection in federal govern-ment crash tests.

Passengers heard the Rogue’s four-cylinder en-gine even at idle. And while there’s decent response to power demands, the ac-celeration isn’t quick and sporty, and the CVT, while maximizing fuel economy, appeared to keep the engine droning loudly during accel-eration.

Low-end “oomph” or torque peaks at 175 foot-pounds at 4,400 rpm, which is more than the 163 foot-

pounds at 4,400 rpm of the Honda CR-V and the 170 foot-pounds at 4,500 rpm of the Ford Escape with base engine.

Some carmakers, such as Ford, have moved away from CVTs and, instead, are add-ing more gears to the auto-matic transmissions to im-prove fuel economy.

As it was, the test Rogue averaged 22.1 mpg in travel that was 65 percent in the city. This didn’t match the government fuel economy ratings, and it translated into a range of 351 miles on a sin-gle 15.9-gallon tank of regu-lar gasoline.

The 2012 Rogue was the subject of one U.S. safe-ty recall earlier this year, as some tire pressure moni-tors were found to be inac-tive. All vehicles were still at dealerships and were fixed promptly.
