Chapter 2: Avaya Aura® Solution forMidsize Enterprise overview
Avaya Aura® Solution for Midsize Enterprise is a SIP-based software foundation for mid-sized businesses.Midsize Enterprise simplifies complex communication networks and delivers voice, video, messaging,Web applications, and more to employees anywhere, anytime, on any device.
Midsize Enterprise provides a full suite of applications delivering traditional telephony (TDM), IP Telephony(SIP, H.323), utility services (DHCP, HTTP), and full collaboration services (Video, Presence, andConferencing) with fewer servers and reduced deployment costs.
Midsize Enterprise serves as a vehicle for Avaya Business, Avaya Partners, and Avaya customers to test, trial, deploy, and demonstrate the power of Avaya Aura® with a smaller footprint.
Avaya Aura®Solution for Midsize Enterprise:
• replaces large, separate server deployments.
• integrates with existing communications systems.
• provides a path for existing Midsize Business Template 5.2.1, Communication Manager 4.x, andCommunication Manager 3.x customers to migrate to Avaya Aura® applications.
• increases employee satisfaction in work from home environments.
• increases flexibility for employees to manage their work and home priorities easier.
• is intended to be the single core server for a customer's enterprise with an optional High Availabilityserver. Midsize Enterprise does not support core survivability options for any of the applications.Midsize Enterprise can be networked with other cores.
Avaya Aura® Solution for Midsize Enterprise can be installed as:
• a simplex solution.
• a High Availability (HA) solution. The HA solution uses the Avaya Aura® System Platform Fast Rebootfunction.
Midsize Enterprise FeaturesSimplificationMidsize Enterprise combines voice, messaging, video, application enablement, presence, software media services, and full SIP capabilities. Midsize Enterprise hosts multiple AvayaAura® applications on a single server and simplifies application installation, administration, and
Avaya Aura® Solution for Midsize Enterprise Description June 2014 13
ongoing management. Installing the Midsize Enterprise template on a single server is fasterthan installing the suite of applications separately. System configuration is streamlined throughthe use of pre-defined templates and pre-staged applications.
Lower costsMidsize Enterprise:
• reduces the time and cost associated with administration, maintenance, and applicationdeployment. The pre-configured solution can be installed quickly and easily in about onehour.
• decreases IT overhead with fewer devices to manage. System maintenance andintegrated services for administrators (upgrades, backup/restore) requires 75% lesstime.
• is less expensive to buy. 75% less hardware is required.• lowers carbon footprint. Virtualization uses 75% less power and cooling compared to
traditional deployments.
SIP trunking can reduce telecommunication expenses from 20% to 50% by centralizing trunks, reducing trunk access charges, and lowering toll-charge and long-distance rates. SIP trunkingprovides flexible and intelligent routing of inbound calls.
Single Server Modular Messaging simplifies rollouts and lowers hardware maintenance costsby 50% (based on a typical customer configuration).
ProductivityMidsize Enterprise addresses the challenge of anytime, anywhere worker productivity byproviding consistent Unified Communications capabilities to all users regardless of location.
Midsize enterprises can provide customers with embedded call center support and ACDrouting. The optional Contact Center Express (CCE) offers multi-channel contact center.
Employees are accessible to customers and co-workers whether they are mobile, telecommuting from home, or working at another office or branch location.
Employees can receive and retrieve their messages in a single, unified mailbox, be notified ofimportant messages and callers, and access corporate directories.
Midsize Enterprise provides application support for a variety of customer-provided devices, including the Avaya Flare® Communicator for iPad Devices.
Presence-enabled communication increases workforce efficiency through the visibility of theavailability of each person in the enterprise. Midsize Enterprise integrates with solutions fromcompanies such as Microsoft, IBM, and Google.
Business continuityEach virtual server acts completely independently from one another and supports a SurvivableRemote server (formerly Local Survivable Processor).
Secure Access Link (SAL) provides secure alarming and remote access to Avaya ExpertSystems over IP and HTTPS with full audit trails for customer review.
The High Availability option offers full server redundancy.

Streamlined installationInstallation time is 90 minutes. The Midsize Enterprise template is pre-staged on the server bya distribution partner with pre-defined values for administration and network identity.
Network parameter changesThe time required for changing network parameters is 45 minutes. You can change generalnetwork parameters without reinstalling or restarting the application. Network parameterchanges take up to 45 minutes to be applied to the entire system.
Configuration requirementsManaging and configuring Midsize Enterprise requires the following:
• Eleven (11) static IP addresses. Ten (10) are needed for the required virtual applicationsor virtual machines in the server, and one (1) is needed for the required H.248 MediaGateway. The ten VA or VM IP addresses must all be on the same subnet. The H.248Media Gateway IP addresses must be reachable from that subnet. You also require anIP address for each of your endpoints. You can assign IP addresses either statically orby using DHCP.
Note:
If the optional Services VM is included, twelve (12) IP addresses and hostnames arerequired.
• Seven (7) username/password pairs.• Four (4) license files must be downloaded and applied to Midsize Enterprise.
Communication Manager, Application Enablement Services, Session Manager, andPresence Services continue to be licensed individually. You can download the fourlicenses from PLDS as a single download transaction.
Survivable Core and Survivable Remote InteractionsMidsize Enterprise does not support Survivable Core functionality in this release. Individualapplication reliability offers do not apply. Instead, the Midsize Enterprise solution is offered asa simplex solution or with System Platform Fast Reboot High Availability.
Midsize Enterprise supports Survivable Remote functionality in this release, up to a maximumof 250 branches/survivable remotes.
High AvailabilityMidsize Enterprise supports High Availability installations with redundant server configurationsand remote sites that require a survivable branch or survivable remote solution. In the HighAvailability configuration, the primary and backup servers use a virtual server address forcommunication with external devices.
Midsize Enterprise uses the Fast Reboot High Availability functionality of System Platform. Ifthe primary server fails, applications continue operating on a second server. This configurationrequires a physical connection (crossover LAN cable) between the active and standby servers. The cable serves as a high speed, low latency connection for disk mirroring. The cable also
Midsize Enterprise Features
Avaya Aura® Solution for Midsize Enterprise Description June 2014 15
serves as a redundant communication path between the active and standby servers. Thestandby server distinguishes communication failures (which do not cause a failover) fromproblems with the active server (which do cause a failover).
Because the cable must physically connect the servers, the active and standby servers mustbe located within 100 meters of each other. The failover time is less than 10 minutes, notincluding re-registration. You can enable or add High Availability to an existing single serverwithout reinstalling the Midsize Enterprise template on the original server.
See Installing and Configuring Avaya Aura® System Platform on the Avaya support websitefor more information about High Availability.
High Availability setup for Midsize Enterprise
Midsize Enterprise High Availability uses the System Platform Fast Reboot functionality. TheDistributed Replicated Block Device (DRDB) software replicates data between the twoservers.
Data is transferred across a 1 GB crossover cable that is connected to the Eth2 port on eachserver (active and standby). The Ethernet specification limit for the length of this cable is 100meters. This interconnection cannot include a layer-2 switch.
Note:Failover time takes approximately 10 minutes.
The following diagram shows how High Availability is set up for Midsize Enterprise.
Avaya Aura® Solution for Midsize Enterprise overview
16 Avaya Aura® Solution for Midsize Enterprise Description June 2014Comments? [email protected]
Consolidated backup and restoreYou can perform a consolidated backup and restore of all Midsize Enterprise application datausing System Manager or the System Platform Management console as supported by theindividual applications.
You can store the backup locally or on a remote server.
You can restore application data directly or while connected to the server on the network.
Note:Communication Manager Messaging does not provide consolidated backup and restore withSystem Platform. The Communication Manager Messaging Message store (the voice mailmessages in mailboxes) can be quite large and is not practical for the HDD on the server. The Communication Manager Messaging Message store is more suitable for saving backupfiles off the server. Save Communication Manager Messaging separately to an off-serverlocation using the Communication Manager Messaging SMI page.
Important:If you are restoring data to a different server but using the same network identity (as in thecase of disaster recovery), re-licensing from PLDS is required because the MAC address isdifferent.
Services Virtual MachineThe Secure Access Link Gateway (SAL gateway) runs on an independent Services VirtualMachine (SVM) on the Midsize Enterprise server.
The Services Virtual Machine:
• sends alarms to the Avaya Data Center for Avaya maintenance customers.
• enables secure remote access for Avaya Client Services to local server resources toperform maintenance activities.
• forwards alarms (SNMPv2 traps) from the local solution server to a remote NetworkManagement System (NMS).
The SVM is a separate template. The SVM is not a solution template. You can enable orupgrade the SVM template at anytime, independent of the Midsize Enterprise template.
See Implementing and Administering Services-VM on Avaya Aura® System Platform for moreinformation regarding Services Virtual Machine.
Midsize Enterprise Features
Avaya Aura® Solution for Midsize Enterprise Description June 2014 17
Midsize Enterprise Release 6.2.2 featuresMidsize Enterprise 6.2.2 is the third release of the Avaya Aura and application suite.
Streamlined installationFor Midsize Enterprise Release 6.2.2, installation time is reduced from 3.5 hours to 90 minutes. The Midsize Enterprise 6.2.2 template is pre-staged on the server by a distribution partner withpre-defined values for administration and network identity.
Network parameter changesThe time required for changing network parameters is reduced from 3.5 hours to 45 minutes. You can change general network parameters without reinstalling or restarting the application.Network parameter changes take up to 45 minutes to be applied to the entire system.
Configuration requirementsTo manage and configure Midsize Enterprise 6.2.2, the following are required:
• Eleven (11) static IP addresses. Ten (10) are needed for the required virtual applicationsor virtual machines in the server, and one (1) is needed for the required H.248 MediaGateway. The ten VA or VM IP addresses must all be on the same subnet. The H.248Media Gateway IP addresses must be reachable from that subnet. You also require anIP address for each of your endpoints. You can assign IP addresses either statically orby using DHCP.
Note:
If the optional Services VM is included, twleve (12) IP addresses and hostnames arerequired.
• Seven (7) username/password pairs.• Four (4) license files must be downloaded and applied to Midsize Enterprise.
