Ethical Issues in AviationEdited by Elizabeth A. Hoppe, Lewis University, USA

Ethical Issues in Aviationis an innovative and thought-

provoking book that explores an important, but heretofore, neglected area of research. While the study of ethics hasbeen applied in numerous other industries, its applicationto aviation is long overdue. For those who study aviation, this book is sure to provide multiple new perspectives onfamiliar issues. It was a treat to read about the businessof aviation, safety, diversity, airport development, andenvironmental issues through an ethical lens.

Andrew R. Goetz, University of Denver, USA

Opens up a new area of applied ethics, comprehensivelyaddressing the ethical issues confronting the civil aviationindustry.

Combines a theoretical framework with ethical concernsfrom the workplace.

Applied ethics has been gaining wide attention in a varietyof curricula, and there is growing awareness of the need forethical training in general. Well-publicized ethical problemssuch as the Challenger disaster, the Ford Pinto case and thecollapse of corporations such as Enron have highlighted theneed to rethink the role of ethics in the workplace.

The concept of applied ethics originated in medicine witha groundbreaking book published in 1979. Business ethics

books began to appear in the 1980s, with engineeringethics following in the 1990s. This volume now opens up anew area of applied ethics, comprehensively addressing theethical issues confronting the civil aviation industry.

Aviation is unique in two major ways: firstly it has a longhistory of government regulations, and secondly its primaryfocus is safety. In earlier years commercial aviation wasviewed in the same manner as public utilities and sowas highly regulated by government. But moves in morerecent decades towards deregulation mean aviation is nowtreated like any other business. Meanwhile some expertsbelieve that the sudden switch to deregulation has caused

problems, especially as many airlines were unprepared forthe change. Ethical Issues in Aviationfocuses on currentconcerns and trends, to reflect the changes that haveoccurred in this deregulated era.

The book provides the reader with an overview of the majorthemes in civil aviation ethics. It begins with theoreticalframeworks, followed by sections on the business side ofaviation, employee responsibility, diversity in aviation, ground issues regarding airports, air traffic control andsecurity, as well as health and the environment. Thecontributors to the volume include both academicsdoing research in the field as well as professionals who

provide accounts of the ethical situations that arise in theworkplace.

Air Transport in the 21st CenturyKey Strategic Developments

Edited by John F. OConnell and George Williams,

    both at Cranfield University, UK

The air transport industry is one of the fastest growing, economically important, yet least profitable industries inthe world. Air Transport in the 21st Century: Key StrategicDevelopments takes the reader on a fascinating journeythrough some of the key strategic challenges facing theindustry today.

Giovanni Bisignani, Director General & CEO, IATA International Air Transport Association,

Comprehensive coverage of the key issues affecting andshaping the aviation industry.

Offers perspectives from senior industry gures andacademics.

Air Transport in the 21st Centuryreviews current trendsin the airline industry and its related suppliers, therebyproviding an insight into the forces that are changing itsdynamics. It examines the factors that are reshaping thestructure of the industry with a view to identifying the keyissues whose impact will be critical in the future.

The book features two very distinct sections. The firstcontains short contributions from senior industry executives

from airlines, aircraft/engine manufacturers, safety andnavigational provider organisations, who have set outtheir take of where the airline industry is heading. Thiscommercial input sets the scene for the book and providesthe bridge to the second section, which is composed of 18chapters written by distinguished academic authors. Eachchapter presents a valuable insight into a specific areaof the air transport industry, including: airlines, airports, cargo, deregulation, the environment, navigation, strategy, information technology, security and tourism. The sharedobjective of the authors is to describe and explain the corecompetencies that are determining the current shape ofthe industry and to examine the forces that will change its

    direction going forward.

Written in a management style, this book appeals toall levels of personnel who work for airlines across theworld. It is also written for airport authorities, aerospacemanufacturers, regulatory and government transportationagencies, researchers and students of aviation management, transport studies, tourism and the wider air transportindustry.

Moving Boxes by AirThe Economics of International Air Cargo

Peter S. Morrell, Cranfield University, UK

'Air cargo deserves far greater recognition of its role inthe profitability of airlines, and in the global distributionof goods and the spread of the benefits of globalization.A book such as Moving Boxes by Airis therefore a highlywelcome addition to the published material coveringthis aspect of the industry, and provides a fresh analysisand insights. It includes a good overview of the market(customers, commodities and suppliers), of the state of theindustry, and of the key issues faced. It is especially relevantto see a balanced chapter on air cargo and the environment,as this topic is still relatively unexplored.'

    Oliver Evans, Chief Cargo Officer,

    Swiss International Air Lines Ltd

The first book dedicated entirely to air cargo.

up-to-date and covering all key aspects ofthe air cargo sector.

Air cargo is a key element of the global supply chain. Itallows outsourcing of manufacturing to other countriesand links production in both multinational and smallerenterprises. It has also been the most important driver of

certain export industries in countries such as South Africa,Kenya and Chile.

As a component of the air transport industry, air cargomakes the crucial difference between profit and loss onmany long-haul routes. For some network combinationcarriers it accounts for up to half of total tonne-kms flown, and as much as one quarter of total revenue. In addition, the integrated carriers such as DHL, FedEx and TNT havetheir own fleets of dedicated freighter aircraft, and cargoaircraft operators like Cargolux and Nippon Cargo havea specialist role in the industry.

Featuring expert analysis and worked examples to enhanceunderstanding, Moving Boxes by Airby Peter Morrell offersa comprehensive and up-to-date guide to the business andpractices of air cargo, with a chapter dedicated to eachkey issue, such as: current trends, market characteristics, regulation, airport terminal operations, pricing andrevenues, and environmental impacts.

The Passenger Has Gone Digitaland MobileAccessing and Connecting Through

    Information and Technology

Nawal K. Taneja,Department of Aviation, Ohio State University, USA

Presents the game-changing opportunitiespresented to the airline industry bynew-generation technology.

Offers the chance to break free of theestablished parameters, to improve

the customer experience and the bottomline without the need to compromise.

Technology is changing expectations in the airline industry.Passengers want to be in control, and they expect airlinesto become solution providers and aggregators of value, toprovide them with personalized services. Airline employeesexpect to be given the tools to do their jobs and to meetpassenger expectations. Airline executives expect to makereturns that are reasonable and relatively stable throughbusiness cycles. All of these expectations can be met by

airlines through the effective and efficient leveraging ofinformation and technology, to shift from being operations-and product-centric to becoming customer-centric anddramatically improving the overall passenger travelexperience throughout the travel cycle.

In this new book Nawal K. Taneja, explores and explains thegame-changing opportunities presented to the industry bynew-generation information and technology. He shows howinformation and technology can now drive, not just enable,an airline's strategy to become truly customer-centric ata personalized level, while at the same time enablingthe operator to reduce costs, enhance revenues, reducerisks and become much more flexible and agile by bettermanaging complexity.

Understanding Decision-makingProcesses in Airline OperationsControlPeter J. Bruce,Swinburne University of Technology, Australia

Improve decision-making processes andso minimize the impacts of disruptions.

Consider decision-making processes froma human perspective.

Previous studies conducted within the aviation industryhave examined a multitude of crucial aspects such aspolicy, airline service quality, and revenue management. An extensive body of literature has also recognised theimportance of decision-making in aviation, with the focuspredominantly on pilots and air traffic controllers.

Understanding Decision-Making Processes in AirlineOperations Control focuses instead on an area largelyoverlooked: an airline's Operations Control Centre(OCC). This is the nerve centre of the airline, responsiblefor decision-making for operational control of an airline'sdaily schedules. The OCCs environment is extremelyintense. A key role of controllers is to make decisions

that facilitate the airline's recovery from frequent, highly complex, and often multiple disruptions. As such,decision-making in this domain is critical to minimise theoperational, commercial and financial impact resultingfrom disruptions.

The book examines many aspects of individualdecision-making in airline operations, and addressesthe deficiencies found by presenting an examinationof the relationships among situation awareness, information completeness, experience, expertise, decision considerations and decision alternativesin OCCs.

The text utilises a multiple case study approach andproposes a number of relevant and important implicationsfor OCC management. Practical outcomes highlight theneed for enhancing training programs enabling existingcontrollers to readily identify and classify elements ofsituation awareness and decision considerations as ameans of improving the decision-making process. Theyalso draw attention to the need for airline OCCs tounderstand the extent to which industry experienceand expertise of controllers is important in the selectionof future staff.

Simulation in Aviation TrainingEdited by Florian Jentsch, Michael Curtis andEduardo Salas, University of Central Florida, USA

CRITICAL ESSAYS ON HUMAN FACTORS IN AVIATION

Simulations have been a fixture of aviation training formany years. Advances in simulator technology now enablemodern flight simulation to mimic very closely the lookand feel of real world flight operations. In spite of this, responsible researchers, trainers, and simulation developersshould look beyond mere simulator fidelity to producemeaningful training outcomes. Optimal simulation trainingdevelopment can unquestionably benefit from knowledgeand understanding of past, present, and future research inthis topic area. Due to decades of research dedicated tosimulation training in aviation, this may be easier said than

done. As a result, this volume of key writings will proveinvaluable as a reference, to help guide exploration ofcritical research in the field. By providing a mix of classicarticles that stand the test of time, and recent writings thatilluminate current issues, this volume informs a broad rangeof topics relevant to simulation training in aviation.

Implementing Safety ManagementSystems in AviationEdited by Alan J. Stolzer,Embry-Riddle

Aeronautical University, USA,Carl D. Halford,The MITRE Corporation, USA andJohn J. Goglia,Independent Safety Consultant

    ASHGATE STUDIES IN HUMAN FACTORS

    FOR FLIGHT OPERATIONS

The International Civil Aviation Organization has mandatedthat all of its member states implement Safety ManagementSystems (SMS) in their aviation industries. Responding tothat call, many countries are now in various stages of SMSdevelopment, implementation, and rulemaking.

In their first book, Safety Management Systems in Aviation,

Stolzer, Halford, and Goglia provided a strong theoreticalframework for SMS, along with a brief discourse on SMSimplementation. This follow-up book provides a very briefoverview of SMS and offers significant guidance and bestpractices on implementing SMS programmes. Very specificguidance is provided by industry experts from government, industry, academia, and consulting, who share theirinvaluable insights from first-hand experience of all aspectsof effective SMS programmes. The contributing authorscome from all facets of aviation, including regulationand oversight, airline, general aviation, military, airport, maintenance, and industrial safety.

Chapters address important topics such as how to develop asystem description and perform task analyses, perspectiveson data sharing, strategies for gaining management support, establishing a safety culture, approaches to auditing, integrating emergency planning and SMS, and more. Also included is a fictional narrative/story that can beused as a case study on SMS implementation.

Implementing Safety Management Systems in Aviationis written for safety professionals and students alike.

Situational AwarenessEdited by Eduardo Salas andAaron S. Dietz, both at University of Central Florida, USA

CRITICAL ESSAYS ON HUMAN FACTORS IN AVIATION

Situational awareness has become an increasinglysalient factor contributing to flight safety and operationalperformance, and the research has burgeoned to copewith the human performance challenges associated withthe installation of advanced avionics systems in modernaircraft. The systematic study and application of situationalawareness has also extended beyond the cockpit to includeair traffic controllers and personnel operating within other

complex, high consequence work domains. This volumeoffers a collection of essays that have made importantcontributions to situational awareness research and practice. To this end, it provides unique access to key readingsthat address the conceptual development of situationalawareness, methods for its assessment, and applications toenhance situational awareness through training and design.

Human Performanceon the Flight DeckDon Harris, HFI Solutions Ltd, UK

Finally, a complete book that addresses the positivecontributions of Human Factors knowledge and AviationPsychology. A good description of how all of its facets cometogether. A must reader. Written by a researcher and teacherwith extensive experience in coping with the best and worstof humans working in one of the most rewarding industriesin the world. Take your time to read, learn and do notforget: enjoy!

Peter Jorna, President,European Association for Aviation Psychology

Taking an integrated, systems approach to dealingexclusively with the human performance issuesencountered on the flight deck of the modern airliner, thisbook describes the inter-relationships between the variousapplication areas of human factors, recognising that thehuman contribution to the operation of an airliner does notfall into neat pigeonholes. The relationship between areassuch as pilot selection, training, flight deck design andsafety management is continually emphasised within thebook. It also affirms the upside of human factors in aviation the positive contribution that it can make to the industry and avoids placing undue emphasis on when the human

component fails. The book is divided into four main parts. Part one describesthe underpinning science base, with chapters on humaninformation processing, workload, situation awareness, decision making, error and individual differences. Part twoof the book looks at the human in the system, containingchapters on pilot selection, simulation and training, stress, fatigue and alcohol, and environmental stressors. Part threetakes a closer look at the machine (the aircraft), beginningwith an examination of flight deck display design, followedby chapters on aircraft control, flight deck automation, andHCI on the flight deck. Part four completes the volume with

a consideration of safety management issues, both on theflight deck and across the airline; the final chapter in thissection looks at human factors for incident and accidentinvestigation.

The book is written for professionals within the aviationindustry, both on the flight deck and elsewhere, for post-graduate students and for researchers working in the area.

The Neurosciences and thePractice of Aviation MedicineEdited by Anthony N. Nicholson,

    King's College London, UK

This book brings the neurosciences to operational andclinical aviation medicine. It is concerned with thephysiology and pathology of circadian rhythmicity, orientation, hypotension and hypoxia, and with disordersof the central nervous system relevant to the practice ofaviation medicine.

The chapters on circadian rhythmicity and orientationdeal with the impaired alertness and sleep disturbanceassociated with desynchrony and with the effects oflinear and angular accelerations on spatial awareness.Hypotension and hypoxia cover cerebral functionduring increased gravitational stress, clinical aspects ofexposure to acute hypoxia, the mild hypoxia of the cabinof transport aircraft, adaptation and acclimatization toaltitude and decompression at extreme altitudes andin space.

Disorders of particular significance to the practice ofaviation medicine such as excessive daytime sleepiness, epilepsy, syncope, hypoglycaemia, headache andtraumatic brain injury are covered, while neuro-ophthalmology, the vestibular system and hearing alsoreceive detailed attention. The potentially adverse effectsof the aviation environment and of disorders of thenervous system are brought together, and the text coversthe neurological examination as it relates to aircrew andexplores current management and therapeutics.

The Neurosciences and the Practice of Aviation Medicineis an essential work for those involved in the practiceof aviation medicine where familiarity with the effectsof the aviation environment on the nervous system andunderstanding the pathophysiology of relevant clinicaldisorders are of prime concern. The authors from leadingcentres of excellence are physiologists concerned with theaviation environment and physicians involved in the day-to-day practice of medicine.
