    GENERAL MANAGER’S CORNER

    Dear Avila Members,

Every year as we move into December, we look back at the year at Avila, to provide us with perspective. Looking back at the year helps us identify accomplishments as well as opportunities to better serve you in the future.

The year 2020 was unlike any other year that I can recall in my career. There was a pandemic crisis thrust upon us with almost no notice and no clear direction on how to navigate, whether f rom a business or personal perspective. Each and every one of us experienced incredible disruption into our lives. Avila was no different.

I am proud of our community and our team of employees in how we all came together. I know wearing masks and having us continually remind you not to socialize between tables in the restaurant was an inconvenience. We know the adjusted hours of operations and the requiring reservations for dining, pools, tennis, and f itness access was cumbersome, and we had some hiccups along the way. We experienced some member conflict as we tried to balance competing uses. We saw

dramatically increased demand for all Club amenities and services while limiting capacities and observing health department guidelines, which was incredibly challenging for management and staff. We have had to screen all staff members each day for symptoms and exposure and completely overhaul many operational and personnel-related procedures. The Avila community came together as we kept operations running, especially contact f ree take-out and delivery and we appreciate the entire communities’ support.

For 2021 we look forward to a return to a more normal operational environment. Our hope is that as the vaccine is distributed and our community is able to regain some control over the uncontrolled spread of COVID-19, we will be able to resume our regular schedule of marquee golf and social events. Additional capital projects scheduled for 2021 includes our Golf Teaching Facility which is close to approval after extensive zoning approvals delayed by COVID-19.

On behalf of the entire team at Avila, thank you for your support and for the trust you have placed in us to keep you and your families safe during such a diff icult time. We look forward to a return to much better conditions in 2021 and cannot wait to see your faces as we welcome you back to your Club. Wishing you and your family all the best and happy holidays as well as a healthy 2021.

    Sincerely,

    Glenn ZitoGeneral Manager

    FITNESS CORNER

THE FUTURE OF FITNESS FOR YOU

Thank you to all of the members who have supported the safety practices at the Fitness Center! We look forward to a New Year as we continue to embrace and welcome wellness in 2021! The impact of last year and the unpredictable, unexpected and unknown challenges endured, deserves a little TLC - tender love and care. Top trends this year revolve around recovering f rom the aftermath of 2020 stress storms and the appreciation for one’s health. Practice the top three tips to get strong and be well!

    1. MASTER THE MIND

Focus on the present moment to clear brain fog, negative thinking and information overload. Meditation, breathing better and music matter. Gratefulness heals the heart. Laughter is still the best medicine.

    2. OUTDOOR ACTIVITY

Air quality and movement matters. Physical activity can reduce stress and improve your mood. Can’t beat the f resh air and Florida sunshine.

    3. SOCIAL INTERACTION

Connecting with family and f riends can help take your mind off of stressful situations. Join an Avila Clubster Group or f itness class to interact with others that have similar interests. Engaging in activities we enjoy can release “happy hormones” to keep us healthy.

    FROM THE TENNIS COURTS

    COURT RESERVATION

It’s always a good idea to make a court reservation if you are planning on playing tennis. Lately all 6 of our courts are getting booked at the same time. We would hate to see you coming unannounced and expect to play tennis just to f ind out that all courts are taken.

Call or e-mail the tennis shop for a court reservation at 813-968-6792 or [email protected]. You can reserve a court for 1 ½ hours for singles and 2 hours for doubles. If no one is waiting for a court, you can play longer.

    BALL MACHINE

The ball machine can be a perfect partner if you are trying to practice a tennis shot that you just learned to hit.

Now that you learned the mechanics of a stroke, you need some repetition without the pressure of winning or losing. The ball machine can simulate just about any shot that you will see against any opponent. If you would like to rent the ball machine, call or e-mail the Tennis Shop at 813-968-6792 or [email protected].

TENNIS TIP – RITUALS BEFORE SERVING

Look at the tennis pros before they serve. All tennis pros have a ritual before serving. Your service ritual can be as simple as bouncing the ball three to four times times before starting your service motion or rocking side to side, breathing out. Anything that forces you to take your time before hitting the serve will help you get a sense of control and focus. Find what is comfortable for you and make it a habit no matter what the score. A consistent ritual will lead to a more consistent serve.

    FROM THE PRO

The inaugural Shootout de Avila was a great success! It was great to see our membership able to play in a fun, 3-day event. COVID has certainly challenged all of us in one way or another, but it was great to actually host a tournament like this as it has been a while. Look soon for a 2021 Shootout date.

Many of you are asking about Los Caballeros. We have not conf irmed a 2021 date as of yet, and there are some challenges with April this year. Discussions are that we may push it into May for 2021, but again, nothing in stone. As for the f ield, the original 84 members that were registered for the 2020 Los Caballeros will have 1st rights. We will then resort to the waiting list for those that cannot make the 2021 date.

I have been working on the event calendar for 2021, but COVID does make it challenging. Keep an eye on Clubster for a schedule of events soon. Keep in mind, some events that I plan for may have to be shelved until we are completely out of this pandemic mess.

FANTASTIC FEATSOn October 16th, Mark Nouss, Max Azzarelli, and Mike Azzarelli were golf ing. Max chipped in for eagle on #16 and thought he was in control. Little did he know his father, Mike, was not to be outdone. He jarred it f rom 160 yards on #18 and made an eagle of his own!

During the AWGA play day on October 28th, Mary Snow made a hole in one on #5. No car, no trip, but a lot of love f rom her playing partners, and a +5 in the points game! She was with Kristin Deneen, Ann Rudolph, and Cornelia Corbett.

Jeff Strouse made his 1st ever hole in one while golf ing with Brian Code. On November 25th he hit an 8-iron in the jar f rom 150 yards out on #14. A nice Thanksgiving surprise!

John Burdick made a 1 on #17 with a 9-iron f rom 138 yards. The date was November 27th, and he was playing with his father Ken, and his brother Ben. What better crowd than that to see this happen!

While golf ing with Mary Snow and Laurie Kavanagh on November 29th, Ann Rudolph aced #17 with a 3-wood! It rolled right in like a putt!

Dr. Louis Harrison made his 1st career ace on hole #5. It was December 11th, and he was playing with his wife Ilene, and Dan and Roz Kulik. He hit a 9-Iron f rom 105 yards to everyone’s excitement!

    COACH’S CORNER

Hope you all had an enjoyable holiday season and are off to a great start in 2021! The f irst quarter of the year is always my favorite time of year. It is an opportunity to set new golf ing goals and put together a plan. What are your goals for the year? I have a very simple and detailed program to help you set appropriate goals and action steps. Let’s talk it over at your next lesson!

It is also the time of year when new equipment is released. The new Titleist driver is outstanding, and I think the new Callaway Epic Speed clubs will do extremely well. Unfortunately, we have cancelled our annual demo day in February, but keep in mind that we have Trackman and f itting carts available for you throughout the year. Contact me anytime if you want to test out new clubs or shafts.

    Scott WickhamDirector of Instruction

TURF TALKAs the cooler weather sets in the edges of the golf course will begin to show weak turf due to lack of irrigation, shade, and the extra cart traff ic. These areas will start to green up and f ill in once warmer weather appears.

Over the last few months, we have undertaken a more comprehensive program to trim and remove a wide variety of trees throughout the golf course with intent of providing sunlight to in-play areas. Although there is always an annual program, the increased efforts are intended to improve playing conditions. Some weak turf areas under trees that are not necessary to remove will be replaced with pine straw. It will take a full year for us to fully see the results f rom the work that has been done due to the decrease in plant growth this time of year. We are conf ident the results will speak for themselves.

We use tools like the Sunseeker app to help us identify which trees need to be removed and which do not impact the turf health.
