Congratulations to our first “back to back” Los Caballeros de Avila Champions Jeff Strouse and guest Paul Ferguson. They did not win their flight this year, but they qualified for the Bullfight as a wild card team by carding the low nine-hole score on Sunday’s final matches. They played magnificently in the Bull Fight ending with a sudden death chip to about 2 feet to capture the championship!

FITNESS CORNER

MEMBER OF THE MONTHOnce upon a time…there was a member who received a Fitbit from his children, expressing it would be good for their father’s overall health to walk/jog 10,000 steps every day. With a nagging knee injury, the goal seemed unattainable. They were determined to find an alternative and committed to their doctor’s recommendation of pedaling on a recumbent bike equivalent, requiring 60 minutes per day. The initial goal – 10,000 steps a day for 30 consecutive days. The goal was met with ease and a new goal of 100 days in a row was established. Done! The next goal was 360 days straight; conquered in 2018. What next? A goal of 1000 days without missing a single day, and they are on track to meet their goal in October 2019. It’s amazing what you can achieve when you set realistic goals, conquer, and set even higher goals. If you stop by the Fitness Center, you will find this faithful member, Ron Rudolph, every morning on the first recumbent bike. On behalf of the entire Fitness Center Team, we applaud your commitment and example!

FROM THE TENNIS COURTS

TENNIS TIP – HYDRATE MOREHydration is key during the summer months. Many of you stop playing because the weather turns too hot and humid. Instead, keep your game going and drink more water, sports drinks or Nuun Hydration tablets to replenish your electrolytes. Take more breaks and use our mango towels to keep your body cool. You will benefit keeping your body active during our beautiful summer months.

UT MARTIN PRO-AMThe University of Tennessee/Martin Ladies Tennis Team returned to Avila after a 4-year break. FROM THE PRO

The golf season at Avila has been a successful one! We had a lot of great tournaments and I am overall pleased with our calendar and flow. This summer we will be down at times for maintenance on the course but the practice areas will remain open. We have a good relationship with other courses that you can play during our heavier maintenance times. There will be some great events over the summer including One Day Member Guests and Guy’s Night Out.

We have incorporated PGA Junior League into our programming. PGA Junior League is a great way for our young golf members to break into the game at an early age. They can learn life lessons, make friends, and learn the game of golf from the ground up. I look for this program to grow in the future, and hopefully, we can become a model program for other clubs down the road. Please reach out to Rasmita Taylert or Mike Gareau if you have interest in your children participating. Avila’s PGA Junior League is only available to the children of Avila Golf members at theis time.

Wishing you all a great summer!

COACH’S CORNER

Over the past few months, I have been taking students through the TrackMan Combine, which is a standardized test that enables you to identify the strengths and weaknesses in your golf game. Over 10,000 combines have been taken by golfers from around the globe, from the world’s top ranked players to amateur golfers with a handicap over 20.

One of the best scores we have had so far came from Max Barrett. He has worked hard on his swing over the past couple months and is now seeing some great results in his practice sessions. Max had a score of 75, which is a 0 handicap. He was very sharp with his 60-120 yard shots, which will help him lower his scores on the golf course!

The TrackMan Combine….

• Takes approximately 45 minutes to complete• Consists of 60 shots to 10 different targets• A score is received for each shot and target• Leaderboards are posted on MyTrackMan.com• Compare your results to your peer group or the best in

the world

These types of activities are built within your golf lessons throughout the year.

TURF TALK

The dates of our 2019 summer maintenance are June 3-24, where we will close the course to most effectively carry out our projects. During this closure, we will dryject, aerify, and graden all greens, fairways, tees, and approaches. This will be our most intense aerification of the year, and with the course being closed for three weeks, we will also address the collar dams and tree work.

The next two aerification dates will be Monday, August 5th, when we will punch the greens with a small tines, and then after Labor Day (September 3, 4, and 5), when we will combine our dryject and our last aerification to close out our cultural practices for the summer. Please remember that Mother Nature can affect these scheduled dates.

As always I look forward to seeing you on the course and if you have any questions, please email me at [email protected].

FANTASTIC FEATSOn March 8th, Steven Lobman was playing in the practice round game for the Club Championship. His Member-Guest partner, Chris Lambrou, was in town for a visit. There was no better time for Steven to show off by making an ace on 5 for his first Avila ace!

March 16th was one of the most interesting Blue Tee Games at Avila! Tour Pro Jimmy Stanger started Par-Par-Birdie-Eagle-Hole in One, en route to a blistering 62. AJ Morris double-eagled #16 and shot 67. John Wolf made eagle in the same group and was getting a stroke, so they halved with 2’s! Some crazy golf there!
