Hello readers! Welcome to another issue of Arizona Sports & Lifestyle Magazine (AZSAL).
That sweet smell in the air is back, that smell that we all so love and have been anxiously
awaiting for months. Spring is here! Which means baseball, spring break for some and one
of Arizona's coolest, most entertaining events of the year, Country Thunder.
This year, Country Thunder has yet again, brought the A-list of country music acts. And
AZSAL is proud to bring you an exclusive on The Band Perry, who will be headlining the Friday
night lineup. The band has been blowing up the country music scene and continues to
create brilliant music. If you've never attended this Woodstock-type, four-day event, then
you truly don't know what you’re missing. So get your tickets fast, because last year they
sold out for the first time ever. We expect the same this year.
Also in this issue, if you watch the television show The Voice, then you may have heard of
Arizona's own Destinee Quinn. What a great run she made at winning that title. We're all so
proud of her and the commitment and determination she showed to break into the music
business. Check her story out and spread the word, because she's going to be a big star.
This issue is packed with lots of hot new cars, some great spring getaways to San Diego, cool
gear, fun events and ASU basketball star Jahii Carson, who's leading his team to the status
we've all been hoping to see.
We hope you enjoy this issue ...
now keep reading!

FAVORITE LUNCH STOP: Blue Fin
IF YOU'VE LIVED IN THE VALLEY for any significant amount of time, then you've probably
driven by our pick for this issue’s favorite lunch stop: Blue Fin restaurant. Located on the
corner of Central Ave. and Willetta St. in downtown Phoenix, Blue Fin has been dishing out
tasty, quick lunches to loyal patrons since 1981.
There are not many joints in the Valley where you can get a giant plate of
delicious marinated Teriyaki Chicken and a generous helping of salad on one plate for
under 6 bucks.
Blue Fin's signature dish is the Teriyaki Chicken plate, a savory, all-time favorite for
most of its lunch-goers. The silver medal dish is the Panko Chicken, a juicy, fried-to-
perfection Japanese dish that appeals to anyone wanting a little “crunch in their lunch.”
Top off your entree with yummy Gyoza, shrimp or pork fried dumplings, an essential to
enhance your lunch experience.
Vegetarian or salad-lover? Not to worry. Blue Fin has a wide variety of dishes that
can satisfy any appetite, including another very popular specialty, the delectable Krab and
Avocado Salad.
Blue Fin's original Japanese owners, Betsy and Howard, and now daughter Lin, boast
they serve “the freshest quality food at the lowest price.”
So next time you find yourself in downtown Phoenix around lunchtime, stop in for
a quick and tasty bite at Blue Fin.

ARIZONA GIVES DAY is scheduled for April 9, 2014. The
24-hour online giving initiative encourages Arizonans
to recognize and financially support the efforts of
various nonprofits from across the state. In addition
to fundraising, Arizona Gives Day is an opportunity to
raise awareness of the state’s nonprofit sector and
educate communities on the benefits of online giving.
According to Marissa Theisen, president and CEO
of the Arizona Grantmakers Forum, the impact of indi-
vidual donors on the state’s many nonprofit organiza-
tions will be felt for years to come. “These funds will
help organizations change lives, build leaders and
champion so many good causes.”
Beginning at midnight on April 9 and continuing
until 11:59 p.m., Arizonans can go online at
www.azgives.org and pledge their financial support to
the nonprofit of their choice. Donors will select the
recipient of their online donation — there will be an
estimated 800 or more to choose from — and the
donation will go directly to their chosen organization.
SPRING CLEANING TIPS
OLD MAN WINTER WILL SOON WAVE GOODBYE, as sweet spring stops infor a visit. This is the season to start anew and that includes fresheningup your home after a long bout of cold weather.
Experts at The Maids (www.maids.com) offer the following tips tohelp you reach your spring cleaning goals. First, make a checklist of tasksfor each room, beginning with the most important jobs. Incorporateideas from the categories below to get started.
IT’S A WASH
1. Launder or air out items like curtains, cushions, pillows, blankets and rugs.
2. Vacuum items that don’t always receive attention such as sofas or chairs and
the floors under beds and other heavy furniture.
3. Dust or carefully vacuum TVs, stereo equipment and other electronics.
4. Target other items that may not get regular care: window blinds, ceiling fans
and picture frames, to name a few.
5. Wash walls and baseboards, light fixtures, switch plates and stairway banisters.
6. Wash windows with vinegar and a microfiber cloth to remove grime and that
filmy substance that some commercial cleaners leave behind. Wash and repair
window screens.
7. Clean the insides of your washer and dryer, including the lint trap.
ARIZONANS ASKED TO GIVE ON DAY OF GIVING
GET ORGANIZED
1. Remove everything from closets, drawers, shelves and storage receptacles
and decide whether you’ll keep each item, sell it or donate it. Clean storage
areas thoroughly before returning saved items.
2. Empty your refrigerator and freezer, too, throwing out dated items and
washing the interior with warm, soapy water.
3. De-clutter your basement and garage.
REJUVENATE
1. Take care of annual or semi-annual chores such as steam-cleaning carpeting
or resealing tile floors, for instance.
2. Outside, sweep and hose down walks and driveways so you don’t track in
dirt and mud.
3. In the bathroom, scrub tiles and grout. Re-grout loose tiles and re-caulk
around fixtures. Replace old showerheads.
After you’re done, open your windows to let the fresh air in; by the end
of this list, you will have a sparkling, clean home from which to enjoy spring
and take a much-needed rest!

AMONGST THE URBAN ARTISTRY OF
HIGH STREET in North Scottsdale, the
Mediterranean jewel La Bocca stands apart
in aesthetics and artisan cuisine. Drawn in
by the rustic appearance of weathered
seaside wood beams that contrast with the
modern metallic vibe of the surrounding
buildings, guests enter a visually stunning
wine bar that pleases the eyes and appeases
the appetite. The bar itself runs the length
of the restaurant and track lighting sets a
low key mood while bright oranges, reds,
and yellows excite the décor accented by
rich red brick and glass wine cases. Candle lit
coffee tables are surrounded by leather
wrapped couches enhancing the relaxing
atmosphere La Bocca strives at.
La Bocca at High Street is the second
location of the acclaimed La Bocca Pizzeria
+ Wine Bar franchise, with the first being
the amazing Tempe on Mill location that is
in it’s fifth year. Although the name is the
same, which means outstanding eats and
spot on service, La Bocca at High Street has
an expanded food and wine program that
puts it top spot on the block. La Bocca’s
warm vibe makes it a hip social site, great
for gathering with friends and neighbors.
The brick, open-air design is conducive to a
pleasurable cocktailing and dining experi-
ence any time of the year.
When I asked Fork & Dagger, Inc.’s
CEO Julian Wright, who fits the bill of a La
Bocca repeat offender, he told me,
“Foodies who like great wine and high
quality reasonably priced food in a hip yet
comfortable environment.”
Chef Mark Dow leads La Bocca’s
Mediterranean odyssey with a unique blend
of traditional dishes that pop with unique
twists at every bite. The best place to start
any La Bocca outing is with the bruschetta
planks. I had the pleasure of experiencing a
proper sampling of the bruschetta. Dead to
rights the roasted chicken and sundried
tomatoes with goat cheese brusch felt like
a righteous experience as my palate was
painted with a plush whipped spread that
acted like a canvas for a flawless blend of
robust juicy chicken and smoky tomato.
The smoked prosciutto with fig, mascar-
pone, truffle oil and house-made pesto was
a great second selection. The unmistakable
salty tinge of perfectly aged prosciutto
projected nicely along side the sweet
punch of dried fig.
From there I moved on to the Med
Plate — a succulent mix of classic
Mediterranean munchies including basil
hummus, babaganoush with warm feta,
roasted peppers, queen creek olives,
artisan toast and house made flat bread.
The warm feta melted in my mouth and I
craved more than my fill after the first bite.
The hummus was extremely basil heavy,
but certainly not a turn-off by any means.

However, the blend of flavors enticed me

Fresh ingredients are the key to La
Bocca’s abundance of flavor. All the bread

producers including the Queen Creek Olive

ice cream as well,” Wright explained.

At the top of the meal was the alfredo with

their house-made pastas, which have just

For rising country superstars THE BAND PERRY,each show is ‘one part therapy, two parts recess’
TO SAY THAT THINGS HAVE BEEN “A LITTLE BUSY” FOR THE BANDPERRY WOULD BE THE UNDERSTATEMENT OF THE CENTURY.
In just the past few months, the popular country trio
comprised of siblings Kimberly, Reid and Neil Perry, has performed
everywhere from the Super Bowl pregame show to sold-out arenas
across the globe. And the band isn’t anywhere near done yet —
they’ll be one of the headlining acts at Country Thunder, taking
place from April 10-13 in Florence, Ariz. Arizona Sports and
Lifestyle recently had a chance to catch up with the busy family act
and we were pleasantly surprised to find that they are as friendly
and approachable as they are talented.
“2014 is a big creative year for us,” said lead vocalist, Kimberly,
age 30. “We just finished up the Canadian leg of our first headlining
tour [the We Are Pioneers World Tour]. We’ve been able to control
all of the elements that go into the show — it’s been such a
creative experience! We’re also going to be on tour later this year
with Blake Shelton, who was the first one to ever invite us to be on
tour. And, we’re currently writing our third album — it’s in the infant
stages now but definitely shows all of our new horizons.”

BandPerry_MagSeven 3/11/14 10:25 AM Page 3
If The Band Perry’s new horizons match their successes of the
past few years they wouldn’t be able to ask for more. Their self-titled
debut album was released in 2010 and its number one hit, “If I Die
Young,” has become a mainstay on country and contemporary radio
stations. With the initial triumph of the song the trio was set on
making the success last.
“Our second album, Pioneer, is about carving our way into the
future,” Kimberly explained. “We were bound and determined not to
be a one-hit wonder.”
Luckily, that hard work paid off. Their first album saw several
more hit songs, including “You Lie” and “All Your Life.” From their
second album, “Better Dig Two” and other great songs have also
topped the charts. In addition to their rising album sales, The Band
Perry also has another recent accolade to add to their growing
musical résumé — performing at the Super Bowl pregame show.
“We’re huge football fans, always have been,” said bass guitarist
and background vocalist Reid, 25.
In addition to big shows in the States, the band also recently
enjoyed a successful tour overseas. “We got to plan every detail of
the shows we performed in Europe; we had a great time performing
there and had a connection with the European audience,” said Neil,
23, who rocks out on the mandolin, drums, accordion and back-
ground vocals. He added that the shows they played in Amsterdam
were especially memorable.
Like many family acts, The Band Perry has been playing together
since their youth. According to the band, one of the primary goals
with their music — and their second album Pioneer specifically — is
to “bring the romantic mystique of bands back to music.”
Just like a country song, the family act had humble beginnings
— they officially formed as a band in 2005 in Mobile, Alabama after
growing up in Jackson, Mississippi. The wheels to stardom began
turning when Kimberly, the eldest, formed her first band at 15 — and
Reid and Neil observed every rehearsal.
“When the drummer and bassist would take a water break they
would jump on their instruments,” Kimberly recalled on the band’s
website. “They caught the fever immediately.”
Soon after, Reid and Neil started their own band, and the family
traveled together in a 36-foot motor home, playing wherever they
could. The separate bands didn’t last long though — Kimberly said
that her band mates found other interests and, around the same
time, Reid and Neil needed a lead singer.
The deal was sealed when their parents encouraged the trio to

go for it, and for the next few years, the group traveled the
country, playing at venues large and small. After a string of early
successes, including being on the Fresh Faces of Country Tour, they
had their “big break” beginning in 2008 when they met Bob Doyle,
Garth Brooks’ longtime music manager. The Band Perry officially
signed on with Republic Nashville in the summer of 2009. The rest of
their story is the perfect example of an overnight success being
years in the making.
Fast forward to today and their family ties are still strong. Reid
explained that, while they of course have their ups and downs,
they get along really well and are on the same page personally
and professionally.
“We have always had a lot of family members involved in this —
our cousin Ann-Carter helps with our PR and working with fans, and
our parents travel with us too, at times to help with schedules and to
manage things,” Kimberly said. “We joke with our mom and dad that
they should have prepared better and had more kids!”
When asked about their favorite part of their musical journey so
far each band member mentioned their fans and being grateful to be
able to do what they love: performing. In fact, the band seems most
comfortable on stage.
“To be able to play live and have the audience singing along with
us is fulfilling in a way we can’t even describe,” Neil said. “We owe it all
to the fans.”
According to the band, Pioneer is an album meant for arenas.
With powerful music inspired by a variety of different genres, fans
new and old will be pleasantly surprised at the mix of songs — some
powerful and some just plain fun. The band is excited to see their
Arizona fans soon as well.
“We’re really looking forward to Country Thunder,” Kimberly
said. “The stage is our favorite place to be — to me it’s like one part
therapy and two parts recess.”

After a record-breaking freshman campaign,Arizona State's JAHII CARSON is back to lead
the Sun Devils to new heights
OVER THE PAST COUPLE OF DECADES, Phoenix has produced its share of elite high school basket-
ball talent, from Mike Bibby to Richard Jefferson and even the Phoenix Suns' own Channing Frye.
Unfortunately for Arizona State, most of those local players have either fled the Valley or taken the I-10
East to Tucson in pursuit of their hoop dreams. However, Mesa native Jahii Carson chose to blaze a new
trail, turning down many of college basketball's premier programs to remain close to home and help
elevate a Sun Devil program in dire need of its own superstar. Now, in just his second season in Tempe,
Carson has ASU contending once again in the Pac-12 and with hopes of crashing this year's big dance.
Don't let his stature deceive you. Even at just 5-feet-10 and 175 pounds, Jahii Carson, who dunked for
the first time at age 13, is a man amongst boys on the hardwood. Blessed with lightning-quick speed and
springs for legs, he's a nightmare match-up on both ends of the court.
Before arriving in Tempe, Carson starred at Mesa High School where as a senior he averaged 32.2
points and 6.6 assists per game while leading the Jackrabbits to a 21-6 record and an appearance in the
state semifinals where he scored a career-high 58 points against Brophy. Rated as a top-50 recruit by ESPN
and as the eighth best guard in the 2011 class, Carson was named the Arizona Republic Big School Player of
the Year while also being selected to the USA Basketball Under-19 team.
Despite receiving offers from across the country, Carson committed to Arizona State becoming the
school's highest rated in-state recruit and its first All-American since James Harden in 2007.
"I'm a big fan of loyalty and people who express interest in you early on before you become a big
prospect like I was in high school," said Carson. "They were one of the first schools to take an interest and
start recruiting me. I took that into consideration and looked at it as they really wanted me as a player.
And when it came down to it, I really just wanted to stay home."
Unfortunately, the excitement from Carson's commitment was short-lived for Sun Devil fans as the
point guard was ruled an academic non-qualifier after failing to meet the NCAA's initial academic eligibility
standards, which forced him to sit out the entire 2011 season. While he was still allowed to practice and
work out with his new team, Carson was suspended from game action as the Sun Devils struggled to a
10-21 record without their playmaker.
Carson refused to let the situation discourage him, though, and instead used the year off to his
benefit, adjusting to the rigors of college basketball while positioning himself for a return to the hard-
wood the following year.

"I kind of had a clue that I was going to
have to sit out maybe half a year or just a
few games, so I was really disappointed
about that early on," he said. "But I
became more mature and more focused.
I listened to the coaches more and it gave
me another year to develop strength-wise
and to basically work on my jump shot,
my speed and my quickness, and to see
how defenses play little guards at the
college level."
Carson, who grew up idolizing former
Philadelphia 76ers great Allen Iverson,
made his long-awaited debut in 2012 and
wasted very little time making up for his
year away from the court by averaging 18.5
points and 5.1 assists per game while earn-
ing Pac-12 Co-Freshman of the Year honors
along with UCLA's Shabazz Muhammad.
He became the first freshman at
Arizona State to score 30 or more points
in three games and his 18.5 ppg scoring
clip ranked seventh best all-time for a
freshman in the storied Pac-10/12 confer-
ence. Carson also became the first Sun
Devil freshman to start and play in all
35 games at ASU, and his 177 assists were
the sixth most for a freshman in confer-
ence history.
ASU_Jahii Carson_MagSeven 3/11/14 7:56 AM Page 3
"He's a great player," said center Jordan
Bachynski, a three-year teammate of Carson's.
"He's fast and gets to the rim and takes a lot of
pressure off a lot of guys. He's at his best when
he drives and kicks and can get a lot of assists,
which really gets our offense going. He's really
been doing that well for us and he's just a
phenomenal player to be around."
Perhaps most important for the Sun Devils,
the team won 12 more games with Carson in the
lineup last year than it did the previous season and
was able to advance to the second round of the NIT
tournament before falling to Baylor on the road.
"It was fun," remarked Carson. "I bonded with
those guys during that year off so going to
battle with them every game last season was fun
for me and playing with Carrick Felix was a joy.
I definitely think I exceeded even my own expec-
tations but it was because of my teammates.
They looked to me to help lead the team and I
definitely didn't want to let them down and I feel
like they really helped elevate my level of play."
Shortly following his standout freshman
campaign, speculation arose that Carson may
forgo his remaining three years of eligibility and
declare for the NBA draft. However, much to the
delight of Sun Devil fans across the Valley, Carson
announced his plans to return for his sophomore
season at a press conference last April, immedi-
ately raising the expectations on campus that a
return to the NCAA tournament could be on the
horizon for the Sun Devils in 2013-14.
"I just looked at the guards who have been
successful at my size — guys like Isiah Thomas,
Ty Lawson, Nate Robinson, and Aaron Brooks —
and I looked at what they did and why are they
successful in the NBA," said Carson on his
decision to return for another season at ASU.
"They waited and became more mature and they
won. The most important thing is winning. You
can have all the talent in the world but if you
don't win, nobody really notices you."
With Carson back for another season, the

Sun Devils began their offseason preparation
with renewed focus and elevated team goals.
Arizona State traveled to China as part of a 10-
day global outreach program organized by the
Pac-12 conference. While there, Carson and his
teammates played against both Chinese amateur
and professional teams.
The point guard also embarked on his own
offseason challenges leading up to the school
year, competing at the Deron Williams and Adidas
Nations basketball camps against some of college
basketball's elite players from across the country.
"It definitely gave me more of a competitive
chip," remarked Carson. "Going to those camps,
you want to dominate and compete against the
best and be the best. Most of the best guys in
the country are at those camps, so you want to
see how you stack up against them in those
camps, as well as in the regular season. The
experience definitely helped me prepare for the
season and just brought out the dog in me."
While it's not uncommon for a player to
suffer through the proverbial "sophomore
slump," especially after a stellar freshman season,
Carson has picked up right where he left off last
year, pacing a scorching-hot Sun Devil offense in
2013-14. Carson recorded his first 40-point game
while leading Arizona State to a road win over
UNLV back in November and helped guide the Sun
Devils to their fifth 20-win season under Head
Coach Herb Sendek. ASU posted a 16-1 mark at
home, equaling the school record for most home
wins in a season, while also finishing third in the
Pac-12. The only question now is: can Carson lead
the Sun Devils back to the NCAA Tournament?
"I just think guys have to buy into the
digging, scratching, and clawing and doing what-
ever it takes to win," he said. "If we do that and
buy into playing together and having a level of
togetherness on the court and just let go and
have each other’s back, then we can for sure get
to the tournament. And not just make the tour-
nament but actually win some games too."

ASPIRING COUNTRY AND WESTERN SINGER
Destinee Quinn of Surprise made a name for
herself last October as a contestant on The
Voice. This widely popular NBC reality-televi-
sion show has singers audition for celebrity
coaches Christina Aguilera, CeeLo Green,
Adam Levine and Blake Shelton. Quinn was
one of 32 contestants who made it to the
knockout rounds before she was eliminated.
AZSAL chatted with Destinee, who
shared her experiences as a part of one of
the most popular shows in America. Here is
what she had to say:
AZSAL: What was it like to be on The Voice?
Quinn: One of the best experiences I have
ever had. It was exciting and nerve-racking
all at the same time. I learned a lot about
myself as an artist and person.
AZSAL: What were the key things that you
learned from your coach Christina Aguilera?
Quinn: To never hold back. Leave it all on the
stage. Tell the story and put all your heart
into every note.

coaches. Just our own. They are THAT
competitive against each other, but in a
very loving way.
AZSAL: What was the most valuable lesson
you learned from the whole experience?
Quinn: To not let my nerves get the best
of me.
AZSAL: What has life been like since
the show?
Quinn: I moved to Nashville and have been
writing and doing shows. I get recognized
when I go out places, which I don't think
I will ever get used to. For fun, I mess with
people and deny it. They always look
puzzled and swear they know me from
somewhere.
AZSAL: Where would you like to see your
career go over the next few years?
Quinn: I will write a lot more songs, put out
an album and go on tour.
AZSAL: Who are some of your musical
influences?
Quinn: I draw inspiration from everywhere
and all genres. I love great singer/songwrit-

Singer-songwriter GAVIN DEGRAW on his tour, music and the Olympics
FRESH OFF THE RELEASE OF HIS FIFTH STUDIO ALBUM, Make A Move, and the kickoff of his tour last month, soulful
rocker Gavin DeGraw is at the top of his game. His latest single, “Best I Ever Had,” is a radio playlist staple and Valley fans
can look forward to seeing him belt his ballads during his Phoenix stop on April 30 at Celebrity Theatre.
While DeGraw has been no stranger to the top of the charts since he first broke onto the scene with “Chariot”
in 2003, this past year has been full of firsts for the multi-platinum recording artist. From his first co-written album,
to a Grammy nomination, and even an unexpected role in the Olympics, 2014 might be the best year DeGraw has
ever had.
“I spent a lot of time working on this album — as a songwriter, musician, recording artist, you want to give people
something of value,” said DeGraw. “I think we gave them that, and it has opened up opportunities with new affiliations.”
Staying true to his rock ‘n soul vibe, the self-proclaimed hippie found new challenges and inspirations while
writing Make A Move, which is his first album entirely composed of co-written tracks. DeGraw collaborated with the
likes of Kevin Rudolf, Martin Johnson and Benny Blanco to create a collection of powerful ballads, hard-hitting
anthems and feel-good hits.
“It’s a lot more eclectic,” said DeGraw, in comparison to his previous records. “Being entirely co-written, there are
a lot of new textures and styles. All different types of personalities and influences went into it. ”
And the compromise paid off — while not included on Make A Move, one of DeGraw’s recent collaborations

THE BEST(Year) I EverHad

brought another career first: his duet, “We Both Know,” which he co-wrote with Colbie
Caillet for the feature film Safe Haven, received a Grammy nomination for best song
written for visual media.
“I freaked out! I kind of didn’t believe it,” said DeGraw on when he first learned of the
nomination. “I’ve been putting out albums since 2003, so I sort of surrendered the idea
of being nominated. It’s a big win, even if you don’t take home the award; being recog-
nized by your peers and the [music] community. For them to say ‘you did good’ is huge.”
But those less familiar with the music scene may recognize his work in more
surprising places, as in some of the most-watched professional sports ceremonies in
America. The track “Leading Man” (which DeGraw describes as “the song that amps
people up”) was used as the theme song and in promo spots for the 2013 Heisman
Trophy presentation on ESPN.
Not only that, but the Heisman Trophy presentation was just a preview of the
athletic involvement the musician would find himself in. In January, DeGraw’s “Everything
Will Change” was named the official song of the 2014 U.S. Olympic Team.
“It’s funny, when we were writing the song back in June, Martin (Johnson) joked
about how the direction the song was going reminded us of the Olympics — but I never
thought it would really become anything.”
In fact, the song became a big something. DeGraw performed “Everything Will
Change” at the US Olympic Committee’s 100 Day Countdown event in Times Square, where
audience members included Olympic athletes past and present, coaches and trainers. In
addition, the anthem plays in the background of the inspirational Team USA 2014 promo-
tional video, interlaced with footage and commentary from Olympic hopefuls.
“Personally, it’s been incredibly exciting to be a part of,” DeGraw said of the
Olympics. “It’s in so many people’s cultures, and to be able to represent your country in
some way is an honor.”
It’s DeGraw’s powerful crescendos and uplifting lyrics that make his work perfect
encouragement for champions, and he hopes to bring the same spirit and level of
energy to his shows.
“The fans are going to get a lot of energy, and I think that is one thing a lot of
people don’t expect from our shows,” said DeGraw. “We are out there to have fun and
celebrate life — it’s my job to come out, connect and have a great time with the
audience. It’s something we are really proud of.”
Concertgoers can expect an enthusiastic performance that showcases DeGraw’s
blue-eyed soul style and musical talents with a varied set list of songs from his new
album mixed in with his career hits. A true performer at heart, DeGraw packs a punch
when on stage, radiating energy to every audience member and switching up his
instrument of choice.
“My fans are music loving people. They’re not there for the fashion or gimmicks,
just there to have a great time and rock out. And that’s what we do.”
As for special plans while in Phoenix?
“I’ll be bathing in SPF. I’m quite fair.”
"We are out there to have fun and celebrate life – it’s my job tocome out, connect and have a great time with the audience."

Here are a few pointers to help yourchildren achieve their athletic dreams
STAYING ACTIVE DURING SUMMER VACATION is one of the most
important determining factors in whether your child establishes
healthy living habits and develops general athleticism or not.
Summertime presents a prime opportunity for young athletes
to catch up to their teammates and even surpass competitors in
fitness, strength and skill.
SUMMER TRAINING CAMPS EXERCISE
Parents have a number of options for helping their
athletes make the most of summer training, and a popular
choice is enlisting their children in sports camps. In fact, according
to a recent survey by American Express, parents will spend
more than $600 per child on summer activities like sports
teams, pool memberships and camps.
Camps offer several benefits since they provide consistent
activity and sport-specific guidance. For young athletes, camps
are not only an introduction to group training but are also a
great way to get socially acclimated in organized sports.
Unfortunately, camps often last just a few days and cannot
replace three months of consistent activity.
Parents can help their athletes by making exercise a rou-
tine throughout the summer. Timing an athlete, counting reps,
completing drills and taking them on bike rides, trail runs or to a
local swimming pool are good ways to get children active. An
active summer also means that when preseason arrives, the
transition to regular practice will not be a shock to a child’s body.
Athletes who stay active will begin their season in shape, which
will lead to more confidence in play and reduced anxiety.
Coaches will also take note — just ask former NFL player
and CoachUp coach Izaan Cross.

“For young players, especially, conditioning always serves as a giveaway for
the type of work that a player has put in during the offseason,” Cross said. “You
can also tell if a player has stayed active or partaken in summer training camp by
questioning their knowledge of the game. If they can answer questions that they
would not have been able to answer the prior season, or they do not make the
same mistakes that they made the prior season, they most likely continued their
growth as an athlete during the offseason.”
As for the perfect summer training blend, aim to be active every day
with a few days off. Cross said that for a child who is 5-10 years old an hour of
exercise a few days a week is sufficient.
“That can be at a camp or clinic, private coaching, cross training with friends,
training individually or with a parent, general exercising,” Cross clarified. He also
added, “film study, speed training, flexibility work, and weight room availability
become vital for an athlete especially once you get in the upper teenage years.”
Potential star athletes often show high general athletic ability before
learning the nuances of a sport; improving general fitness will make your child
a contender for making top teams and starting positions down the road.
Regardless of a child’s future career as an athlete, adopting a routine of exercise
will help your child establish lifelong healthy habits.
Pros of camps:• They last just a few days or weeks.• Children can practice with nearby
athletes they might see at practice or in competition.
• Children will experience different coaching styles and training, especially in out-of-state camps.
• Children will meet athletes from otherareas, improving their quality of trainingand potentially creating new friendships.
Cons of camps:• Each child is one of many and may not
get individual attention.• Children could learn bad habits from
other athletes.• If a child gets sick or injured at the
beginning of camp, the value of thecamp diminishes.
• Routines and regimens are tailored forthe group; your child’s specific needsmay be overlooked or not addressed.
•Camps can be expensive.▲

Friendship Garden, Ro Ho En, in central Phoenix,
adjacent to the Margaret T. Hance Park on 3rd Avenue.
Opened to the public since 2002, this 3.5-acre master-
piece of Japanese horticulture is the result of East
meets West, specifically the joint efforts of sister cities
Himeji, Japan, and Phoenix.
The distinction between a garden like Ro Ho En and
the park it borders is apparent, as the essence of the
Japanese gardens is one of quiet reflection on nature's
beauty. "Quite often after people stroll through the
garden you will hear them comment that they cannot
believe there is a place like this in Phoenix. The way the
garden is designed feels more like you are someplace
else other than in a desert," shared Executive Director
Mary Murphy-Bessler.
The sister city relationship that spawned this
enchanting garden was established in 1976. After the
garden was proposed in 1987, a delegation from
Phoenix visited Japan in 1988 to view several gardens.
In 1988 and 1990, a design team of landscape architects
from Himeji visited Phoenix to assist in the design. By
combining the knowledge and skills of both teams, they
created a beautiful setting that is adapted to the
demands of our desert environment. The result of this
collaboration — Ro Ho En — is a pastoral enclave intended
to heal the soul, foster meditation and provide harmony
with the natural world and one's inner self.

Even the name is mystical: “Ro” is the Japanese word for the Heron,
which is a significant symbol in Himeji, thought to stand watch over the city.
“Ho” is the Japanese name for the legendary Phoenix bird, a mythical
creature also prominent in Asian folklore. “En” is the Japanese word for
garden, most commonly a Public Garden.
"The Japanese Friendship Garden of Phoenix provides the opportunity to
escape from the everyday hustle and bustle of life and offers a place of peace
and tranquility in the surroundings of nature," Murphy-Bessler added.
The focal point of the garden and the fulcrum of its balance is the
symbolic 14-foot waterfall, which captures your curiosity as it divides into
two falls that are illuminated in the evening. The waterfall acts as a
chameleon as each vantage point provides a different feeling of tranquility.
A stroll through the garden can be mesmerizing. Visitors can spy the
Shachi Monument perched in the garden, which is identical to those that
grace the roof of the Himeji Castle in Japan. The Shachi is a mythical fish with
the face of a tiger and is traditionally placed on the roofs of important
buildings as a charm against fire.
You may also pass a school of koi fish begging each passerby for a morsel
of food, which can be conveniently purchased in the garden's gift shop.
Located at the far side of the Garden, away from the main entrance, the
intimate Musoan Tea House invites you to dwell in the Tea Garden. “Musoan”
means “Tea House of Vision” or "Dream for the Future" and further demon-
strates the Japanese love for the use of natural materials.
Many volunteer programs include opportunities for further learning and
engagement with the Garden. Masters can teach you more about using
Japanese tools, the garden and the culture. Training is also provided for
docents for guided tours and special events.
"On Saturdays, we get to enjoy the Garden in the early morning light,"
said Michael Buelow, Garden Maintenance Liaison and member of the
Japanese Friendship Garden Phoenix Board of Directors. “We also get to
participate in keeping the Garden looking good. Many people find this an
enchanting combination. After all, anything we do with focus is a form of
meditation: even sweeping the walk can be a rich experience."
You can enjoy a trip to the East without leaving the West. This local gem
features a menu of upcoming activities, including a health and well-being
lecture series and workshops that celebrate the culture and heritage of
Japan, as well as special events such as the Festival of Spring, “Haru in the
Garden,” on March 22.
The Garden is open October through May, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is
located at 1125 N. 3rd Avenue in Phoenix. For class listings and special
events visit www.japanesefriendshipgarden.org or call (602) 256-3204 or

FIREBIRD INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY
officially closed its doors in 2013, and at the
time, after three decades of business, the
park’s fate was unknown. Copper Train
Development partnered with The Gila River
Indian Community to manage the almost
600 acre property that reopened, later
that year as Wild Horse Pass Motorsports
Park. Managing partner Paul Clayton was
brought on, along with his business partner
and lifetime friend, Darren Smith to
breathe new life into the facility.
“When we are out here, people come
up to us and tell us some of their fondest
memories growing up were with their dad at
this track,” said Clayton. “We want this to be
the place for kids and families of all ages.”
Clayton envisions a family-friendly
motorsports park that also includes a white-
sand beach. Families would be able to sail
boats, wakeboard, picnic on the grass and
enjoy walking trails around the lake.
“We are excited to revitalize the park
with updates and improvements for the
community to enjoy. We are focusing more
on the experience for the spectator and
allowing for more action to be seen and
heard, as the adrenaline pumping events are
a big part of what people want,” said Clayton.
With well over a million dollars already
spent in upgrades, Wild Horse Pass Motor-
sports Park recently ripped out 550 feet of
their drag strip and replaced it with new rebar
reinforced concrete. The new drag strip is
now up to NHRA specs and standards. The
new surface and facility upgrades were
responsible for record crowds at this year’s
CarQuest Arizona Nationals. Professional Funny
Car Driver, John Force, set a new record on the
brand new drag strip this year of 3.99.
They also added a new state-of-the-art
timing and scoring system. The timing system
was replaced with a brand new Compulink
system, and the scoreboards have been
replaced with the very latest in electronics.
Off the strip, 800 new seats have been put in
at the starting line, and all of the towers and
suites have been remodeled.
Along with hosting new events, Wild
Horse Pass Motorsports Park continues to
host all of the same favorites like Friday
Night Drags and the Lucas Oil Off Road
Racing Series, as well as the premier of the
Lucas Oil Pulling Series in Arizona.
The multi-faceted, 600-acre Wild Horse
Pass Motorsports Park continues the fine
tradition of staging thrilling spectator events,
club racing, corporate outings, and experi-
ential marketing. For more information

THERE’S NO QUESTION WHY SOUTHERN
CALIFORNIA is the go-to vacation destina-
tion for Arizonans. With mild temperatures,
ocean, beach, golf courses, amusement
parks, and a laidback lifestyle, it provides the
perfect backdrop for those trying to
escape the Valley's scorching heat.
But you don't have to wait until July to
take a trip to the San Diego area. It's also a
great travel option for spring break. Here
are three destinations we highly recom-
mend: The Grand Del Mar, Oceanside and
West Inn & Suites.
THE GRAND DEL MAR
Since its opening six years ago, The
Grand Del Mar has been the only Forbes
Five-Star, AAA Five Diamond luxury resort
destination in all of San Diego County. It
features many amenities like four swimming
pools (including an adults-only pool), tennis
courts, a Tom Fazio-designed golf course, a
Renaissance-inspired 21,000-square-foot
spa, six dining venues and 249 elegantly
modeled guest rooms — all of which have
either a golf course or canyon view. Using
Mediterranean-style design elements,
The Grand combines comfort with classic
beauty to create an environment of sophis-
ticated ambiance.
If subtle accents and simple décor are
what you’re looking for in a hotel, The Grand
Del Mar is not the place for you, though —
after all, the name of the resort is The Grand.
Its colorful palette, graceful arched door-
ways, rotundas, vibrant tile, wood-beamed
ceilings, ornate stone and wrought-iron
accent touches are all designed specifically
for this hotel. More than 2,000 pieces of
furniture and art accent the property, with
85 percent of all furnishings custom
designed and the artwork commissioned
specifically for this property.
The spa at the The Grand is hands-
down one of the most amazing resort spas
available. It offers 11 treatment rooms for
massages, facials, hydrotherapy, waxing or
whatever service you may want or need. It

even has a couple’s suite for some romantic
privacy. You can also schedule an appointment
to have your nails or hair done all within the
walls of the resort. The locker room features
are just as astounding with a relaxation
room, complete with stone fireplace, steam
and sauna areas, European-style wet rooms,
and an indoor Jacuzzi. The fitness room is
right on track with the luxury aspect of this
resort, hosting cutting edge equipment and
free weights, as well as complimentary yoga
and pilates class options.
Golfing at The Grand is just as magnifi-
cent as the spa, offering spectacular fairway
views of the rugged Los Peñasquitos Canyon
Preserve. This 18-hole, par 72 course spans
across 380 acres and accommodates all
levels of play, but don’t be fooled — this
course is challenging! You can also work on
your short game with a chipping green
(complete with a sand bunker) practice area,
a second 4,200-square-foot putting green
and a 5,000-square-foot practice tee on the
back side of the practice range.
There’s even something for the kids!
In the spirit of adventure, The Grand has
created The Explorer’s Club, a 2,000-square-
foot interactive kid’s center offering super-
vised children’s programs, including marine
and canyon related activities to keep them
occupied and stimulated while you enjoy a
round of golf or a relaxing spa date. There’s
also an allotment of programs for the whole
family, ranging from bird watching, hiking
and nature walks to mountain biking. You
can even pick up a horseback riding lesson
or explore the canyon by horse from The
Grand’s own eight-stall Equestrian Center.
After you work up an appetite, you can
enjoy the fine dining at Addison, Southern
California’s only AAA Five Diamond and
Forbes Five-Star rated restaurant. Don’t
forget to try one of The Grand’s own wines
with dinner, which have received a Grand
Award from Wine Spectator every year
since 2009. Winemaking at The Grand is an
ongoing, hands-on, collaborative effort
between distinguished global vintners and
the resort sommeliers. To date, they’ve
produced 17 selections with an end goal of
50 wines for the resort’s exclusive use.

OCEANSIDE, CALIFORNIA
Okay, it's not exactly San Diego. Located
just 38 miles north of San Diego, Oceanside
is a bustling California coastal city known as
the gateway between San Diego and Los
Angeles. Fitness fanatics will enjoy year-
round activities in Oceanside including
the California Ironman 70.3 Triathlon
(March), Southern California Beach Soccer
Championships (May), Race Across America
bike race (June), Surftech RSP3 (July), US Pro
Longboard Championships (August), World
Body Surfing Championships (August),
Labor Day Pier Swim (September), Life Time
Tri Oceanside (October), Bike the Coast-
Taste the Coast (November) and Oceanside
Turkey Trot (November). This classic southern
California beach town prides itself in its New
England-style harbor, the longest over-water
wooden pier in San Diego County, year-round
temperatures averaging 72-degrees and
ideal conditions for all things active.
Visitors in Oceanside will enjoy the many
attractions this city offers, including a chance
to jump out of a plane to get the best view
of the 3.5 miles of coast or to ride the waves
on a custom-made surfboard crafted by one
of more than a dozen surfboard manufac-
turers in Oceanside in what’s known as
“Shaper’s Alley.” For a more relaxing and quiet
vacation, visitors can escape to the north-
west side of Oceanside and find the Prince of
Peace Abbey, a monastery that is open to the
public for silent prayer or for participation in
the mass and prayer services with monks
throughout the day. Or they may enjoy a
round of golf at one of the five golf courses
that can be found within the city limits.
Getting to Oceanside is a breeze. There
are four major airports located within 90-
miles of the city, you can ride along the
historic Pacific Coast Highway 101 or
Interstate 5, and if you’re already in
California, you can even hop on a train with
three different services stopping in
Oceanside. Nearby attractions include
LEGOLAND California, Disneyland, Sea World,
San Diego Zoo, San Diego Safari Park and
Birch Aquarium at Scripps. Oceanside is also
a hub for craft beer fans, as it hosts a few
local breweries, including the new additions
of Stone Brew Co., Legacy Brewing, and
Bagby Beer Company this summer.
If you're looking for lodging in the
Oceanside area, we recommend the brand
new SpringHill Suites Oceanside Downtown,
which opened in February 2014 and enjoys
an enviable location just one block from the
beach and pier. The 149-room hotel resem-
bles a chic, beach retreat with incredible
ocean views and a host of “local” touches
including a custom art collection featuring
up-and-coming Oceanside and Southern
California-based artists. For more informa-
tion, visit www.shsoceanside.com.
Another excellent property is the
Wyndham Oceanside Pier Resort located
across from the Oceanside pier with beach
access and breathtaking ocean views. It's
undergoing a cosmetic renovation, which
should be complete by late August. But if you
can handle the noise, this family-friendly
hotel is an excellent value with comfortable
rooms and superb Wyndham service and
amenities. For more information, visit
www.wyndhamoceansidepier.com.
Whatever adventure you’re seeking,
whether it’s a relaxing beach vacation or an
action-packed fitness journey, Oceanside will
provide all that you’ll need.

WEST INN & SUITES
The West Inn & Suites in Carlsbad, Calif.,
aims at giving one-of-a-kind vacation expe-
riences by providing the best in amenities
and services tailored to their guests’
interests. Their attention to detail is earning
the independent boutique hotel a big repu-
tation among travelers.
Located just half a mile off the coast,
the West Inn & Suites first stands out as
appearing more like a Colonial Revival
suitable for the East Coast than the Spanish
hacienda style Southern California towns like
Carlsbad are known for. The ambiance is
inviting and intimate while rich in detail and
classic styles.
The property features 86 guest rooms,
36 of which are suites, and all boasting king
beds, down duvets and plush blankets.
Providing guests with comfort is an apparent
priority, down to the AVEDA toiletries and
complimentary milk and cookies at bedtime.
Guests can look forward to several
amenities offered by the hotel, including a
breakfast buffet, free Wi-Fi and fitness
center, as well as genuinely friendly interac-
tions with the hotel staff.
There are two on-property dining
options, Bistro West (www.bistrowest.com),
which offers casual, relaxed atmosphere and
farm-to-table approach to dining courtesy
of the resort's 3-acre West Farm, or West
Steak and Seafood (www.weststeakand-
seafood.com) for a fine dining experience.
While it’s common to hear a hotel say
they offer something for everybody, the
West Inn has the team to back it up. No
matter what leisure or adventure activity
you're looking for, one of West Inn & Suites’
concierge specialists will take care of all
the details.
Their services are specifically designed
to every type of traveler, be it a family, an indi-
vidual on business, or couples’ getaway; even
pet-lovers can find activities custom tailored
to their unique interests there is also a dog
park and dog-run on the pet-friendly proper-
ty, as well as Canine Cuisine room service.
For example, The Sports Enthusiast can
arrange a morning yoga session on the
beach, followed by a hike around the lagoon
and stand-up paddle-boarding lesson. The
Romance Advisor is available to reserve the
best spots for a sunset dinner, or even plan
an intimate wedding.
To design a perfectly custom vacation,
the concierge specialists don’t have to look
far. One of the biggest contribution factors to
the West Inn & Suites’ appeal is its location.
Within walking distance is a healthy dose of
the best The Golden State has to offer, such
as pristine beaches for surfing and kayaking,
world class shopping and dining, and rugged
hiking trails and nature walks.
Golf lovers can choose between two North
San Diego Golf Courses, while flora fans can
wander the San Diego Botanic Gardens, both a
five minute drive from the hotel.
And while Carlsbad is home to a number
of notable activities, its biggest draw is the
popular theme park LEGOLAND, located just
minutes from the West Inn & Suites. Shuttles
to and from the amusement park are nearly
turn-style, The resort's free shuttle service
will take guests anywhere in Carlsbad, includ-
ing the beach — and they'll throw in chairs,
umbrella and sand toys.

THE 5TH ANNUAL ARIZONA BBQ
FESTIVAL will feature more than 25 top
barbecue purveyors, but that’s only a
fraction of what’s expected to draw more
than 15,000 event-goers to Salt River
Fields on Saturday, April 5. The biggest
attraction is an expansion of last year’s
wildly popular Redneck Games Arena.
“Absolutely no part of this event will
take itself too seriously,” says event co-
founder David Tyda. "If you don't laugh in the
first five minutes, then I'll buy you a shot!"
He's kidding, of course. But this year,
fans will find even more hilarious, redneck-
inspired competitions, from keg-rolling and
watermelon seed-spitting contests to arm
wrestling and lawn mower racing, along with
the horseshoe games with toilet seats.
Pageants galore also will take place on
the contest stage: event organizers are
looking for attendees to enter the Daisy
Duke Beauty Pageant, Redneckiest Tattoo
Contest, Hottest Mullet Pageant, and more.
Phoenix's Coach's Corner Grill is the official
"Arena Bar Sponsor" and will add a decidedly
sports-minded flair to the games.
The 5th Annual Arizona BBQ Festival also
will feature five live bands on the main stage,
including The Crown Kings, James Parks Band,
Pearl Ridge, and Sour Diesel Trainwreck.
Presenting Bar Sponsor, Dierks Bentley's
Whiskey Row, will get the party started with a
live DJ and other entertainment.
As in years past, the Sub-Zero/Wolf
Cooking Demonstration stage will have
cooking demonstrations every hour, only
this year, there's a twist: "We've asked all
chefs to cook up their favorite gourmet
road kill." From snake and rabbit, to possum
and alligator, attendees will learn how to
turn these unexpected ingredients into
mouthwatering dishes.
Adding to the excitement, there will be
wrestling shows by Championship Wrestling
from Arizona, and a "Best of Phoenix" winner.
Realizing that great local restaurants
sometimes get left out of the BBQ festivi-
ties, organizers have added Arizona's first
Bacon Zone. In this area, local restaurants will
dish out any food with bacon and compete
for the title "Best Bacon Thing."
"Bacon and BBQ go hand-in-hand,"
says Tyda. "Actually, bacon and anything go
hand-in-hand."
Tickets are $12 for general admission
and $60 for the VIP tent, which includes
unlimited cuisine from four restaurants, a
drink card good for six adult beverages,
private bathrooms and a private area to relax.
More information can be found
online by visiting www.azbbqfestival.com,

AT THE HEART OF TEMPE you will find
its prized possession: Tempe Town Lake. Year
round the lake is home to triathlons, sailing,
fishing, rowing, outrigger canoes, dragon-
boats, and most recently standup paddle-
boards (SUPs). April 12 will be the Outrigger
Canoe Association’s (TTLOCA’s) 9th Annual
Regatta at Tempe Town Lake and this year
the association is debuting its first SUP
division to complement the existing OC
divisions. The Hawaiian-inspired Regatta will
celebrate the Aloha spirit all day long
with various race categories, food, music,
games, dancing, demonstrations, raffles,
and an after-party for the whole family. The
event will take place in the grass park areas
on the north shore near the lake marina and
boat ramps.
The Regatta wants to promote paddle
sports and the lake to paddlers from near
and far. The mission of the TTLOCA,
explained Race Director John Selman, is to
"share this great training space with team
and individual Outriggers, SUPs, Dragon-
boats, surf-skis and kayaks. We have lots of
cross-participation, particularly between SUP
and Outrigger. Those who paddle Outrigger
with a team know how SUP can add to an
individual’s training, while paddling with oth-
ers in an Outrigger helps the SUP paddler’s
technique and timing.”
“Before he passed away, Tempe Town
Lake’s first boating coordinator, Joseph
'Okie' O’Connor, stressed that events like the
Outrigger Regatta, while competitive,
should also be inclusive," Selman continued.
"Paddlers stress that our clubs exist to
spread Aloha through the sport of paddling!
While winning is fun, we always paddle
together as an ohana (family) first.”
So how does an outrigger canoe associa-
tion find the experience to organize a stand
up paddleboard division? The answer is
easy; ask the Valley’s only paddleboard shop
No Snow Stand Up Paddleboards to help!
“Developing a SUP race scene here is a
dream come true and we couldn’t be more
honored to team up with TTLOCA to unite
paddle communities," said shop owner Court
Fetter. "No ocean required, just a team of
great folks that love the water!”

UNTIL I STARTED TEST DRIVING auto-

the opportunity to get intimate with the
Lexus brand and often wondered if the cars
lived up to the hype. After kickin' it with the
LS460, I can honestly say, I'm now in LOVE
with the Lexus brand.
With the LS — the flagship model of
the Lexus sedan lineup — Lexus absolutely
nailed it. The LS is offered in three styles:
LS460, LS460 F Sport (which adds 19-inch
forged alloy wheels and high-performance
Brembo brakes) and LS600h L Hybrid (which
adds a 5.0L, V-8 engine and all-wheel

with enough standard features to satisfy
even the most discerning buyer.
Under the hood: The direct-injected
4.6-liter, 386-hp V-8 engine is paired with
an eight-speed automatic transmission,
delivering an exhilarating combination of
acceleration, smooth shifting, control and
modest fuel efficiency. It rockets from 0-60
in 5.4 seconds, with an estimated 19 MPG
combined. The LS 460 comes in rear-wheel
drive and all-wheel drive, for better traction
in bad weather.
A Drive Mode dial on the center console
allows the driver to select five driving
modes: Eco (for better fuel economy), Snow
(for improved traction), Comfort (adjusts
the suspension for a smoother ride), Sport
(adjusts the car’s throttle response to make
shifts quicker and rev higher for maximum
power), and Sport Plus (tightens the suspen-
sion for better handling).
On the inside: The interior of the

Toyota's Land Cruiser, and it cranks out 383-
hp. and 403 lb.-ft. of torque. It accelerates
from 0-60 in 7.5 seconds. It's a legit contender
in the off-roading category, capable of tow-
ing up to 7,000 pounds and enough ground
clearance to pass over rocks and other small
obstacles. While it drives well on highways, its
size and weight aren't friendly on winding
roads. It comes equipped with what Lexus
calls Crawl Control, designed to automatically
maintain an optimal low and steady pace over
challenging terrain. Turn Assist tightens the
turning circle by adding brake force to the
inside rear wheel. As expected, gas mileage is
dismal at 12/17 mpg — but hey, you're not
purchasing this SUV for fuel economy.
On the inside: Inside, the LX570 is fully
loaded with comfort, convenience and tech-
nological features. Our test model was loaded
to the hilt with luxury extras like rear-seat DVD
entertainment system, radar-adaptive cruise
control, intuitive park assist, and a 19-speaker
Mark Levinson audio system. The posh cabin is
roomy, quiet and luxurious, adorned with
high-quality materials, including premium per-
forated leather power seats, leather-trimmed
heated steering wheel and shift knob, and real
wood trim. With 28 vents throughout the
cabin, the LX features a four-zone climate-
control system that allows driver and passen-
gers to select ideal temperature settings. The
LX570 seats eight — though the second and
third rows can only comfortably accommo-
date rug rats and small teens. The second
rows fold and flip fully forward to expand
cargo space, while the third-row seats flip up
and rotate to the side — allowing for cargo
flexibility for larger items.

THE AVALON IS TOYOTA'S FLAGSHIP SEDAN,
with styling and luxuries that position it
close to a Lexus. For those wanting to buy
"American made," the Avalon is built at
Toyota's plant in Kentucky and is exclusive to
North America. It was completely redesigned
for the 2013 model year, and the 2014
edition is loaded with standard equipment
and luxury amenities. The Avalon is offered
in four trim levels: XLE, XLE Premium, XLE
Touring and Limited. We test-drove the
Limited. There is also a Hybrid edition.
Under the hood: The Avalon's drive
train — a 268-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6
engine paired to a 6-speed electronically con-
trolled automatic transmission — is strong,
smooth and responsive, offering plenty of
acceleration (0-60 in 6.4 seconds) and punch
on the freeway. It's quite efficient with an
EPA-estimated 31 mpg highway and Ultra
Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV) certification. The
Avalon Hybrid gets a remarkable 40 mpg
combined — outstanding for a luxury sedan.
With the click of a button strategically
placed on the center stack, the driver can
choose one of three driving modes: Eco, EV
and Sport. Eco mode reduces accelerator
response and diminishes the climate system
effectiveness for better mileage. In EV mode,
the Avalon uses only an electric motor for
low cruising speeds and short distances
(about half a mile). The Sport mode gives
quicker shifts and accelerates faster — but it
gulps fuel. Steering wheel-mounted paddle
shifters enhance Sport mode, allowing the
driver to actively choose gears.
On the inside: While it's handsome on
the outside, the Avalon really shines on the
inside. The Limited's cabin is roomy, modern
and well appointed with posh touches includ-
ing a stitched leather-trim steering wheel
(with controls for Bluetooth, audio and cruise
control), stitched leather-look dashboard,
classy wood-look trim, and premium
perforated leather-trimmed heated and
ventilated front seats. The gauge cluster has
bold, bright displays that have the look of a
Swiss watch. A nifty climate control bar
adjusts with the slide of your fingertip. The
cabin has theater-style lighting, using LEDs to
softly illuminate the cup holders, door latches
and center console. The Limited version
sports a powerful JBL 785-watt audio system
with HD navigation. Backseat passengers are
treated to ample legroom, separate rear
climate controls and vents, excellent head-
room, and a center armrest with integrated
cup holders.

WHEN I WAS FIRST HANDED THE KEYS to
the 2014 Volkswagen Touareg TDI LUX, I was a
bit skeptical. This was a diesel vehicle ... and my
senses were prepared for smoky exhaust and
obnoxious engine noise. But this wasn't the
case. The Touareg is refined and luxurious, and
after a few spins around the block, I was thor-
oughly impressed with VW's luxury diesel SUV.
The Touareg is in its second generation,
but received minor updates for 2014. From
my perspective, the Touareg hits all the
marks: clean lines, a quiet and powerful diesel
engine, an abundance of standard features, a
comfortable and roomy interior, and excellent
ride quality. At $55,885, though, the Touareg
is probably out of most people's budget.
Under the hood: The V-6 TD diesel
engine, paired to an eight-speed automatic
transmission, provides excellent acceleration
and power on command. It's rated at 20
city/29 highway/23 combined MPG, which
are decent numbers considering the
Touareg is a sizable four-wheel-drive SUV.
You’ll pay more at the pump for diesel fuel,
however, which offsets the Touareg's
modest fuel economy.
All-wheel drive is standard, and it pro-
vides excellent control in wet, snowy and
muddy conditions, making it an excellent
vehicle for those who live in areas with foul
weather and difficult road conditions. Yet it
still handles well during dry conditions.
On the inside: The Touareg TDI is a five-
seater loaded with luxury amenities. A touch-
screen navigation and infotainment system is
intuitive and smart. A panoramic sunroof
brightens front and back seats with sunlight.
Plenty of controls are strategically placed on
leather steering wheel, including Bluetooth
wireless connectivity, cruise control, audio
system and controls for the Touareg’s on-
board computer, which diagnoses problems
like low tire pressure, and gives a readout of
the vehicle’s current fuel efficiency.
The back seats are richly appointed with
comfortable leather, A/C vents and a 12V
plug to recharge gadgets. For versatility, the
back seats fold down flat and split into a 40-
20-40 configuration, providing ample room to
haul both people and things.
And speaking of cargo, the rear tailgate
opens with a simple pass of your foot under-
neath the vehicle’s rear bumper, so there's
no more fidgeting for key fobs while your
arms are double-loaded with grocery bags
and toddlers.

2014 FORD ESCAPE TITANIUM 4WD Ford’s bestselling SUV received a complete overhaul in 2013.
With clean lines, a sleek new aerodynamic design and bold styling,
it's now one of the more handsome small crossover SUVs on the
market. The top-end Titanium model boasts a 2.0-liter turbo four
with 240 horses and 270 lb-ft of torque. Two technologies —
turbocharging and direct injection — deliver the performance of a
larger engine with the efficiency of a smaller one (EPA-estimated 22
city/30 highway). The Escape’s chassis is sporty and it drives like a
beefy Ford Focus with a higher center of gravity. The interior is well
appointed, including leather-trimmed seats, steering wheel and
shift knob, and a Sony audio system with 10 speakers and SiriusXM
Satellite Radio. The panoramic Vista Roof lets in plenty of light and
ventilation. A foot-activated liftgate makes it easy to load and
unload cargo; just kick your foot under the bumper and the power
liftgate opens.
C'mon man: The Escape's ceiling panel is flimsy, especially
noticeable when you have to switch on the interior lights.

2014 KIA SOUL +Kia's national TV ads for the Soul feature three funky
hamsters doing their thing in this hip hatchback. I'm no furry
rodent, but I do enjoy the Soul, which was completely redesigned
for 2014 and features far more inside than you'd expect. It's a
fun, boxy five-seat hatchback that has earned the affection of
young car buyers (Kia sells about 10,000 Souls per month in the
United States). The Soul has a very cool vibe and feel. The
slick-looking interior has ample technological gadgetry, including
a UVO infotainment system with touchscreen and thumping
Infinity sound system with illuminated LED door speakers. The
door panels incorporate sculpted circles, while air vents and
speaker grilles bookend the dashboard like turrets. Under the
hood, the Soul + is powered by a 164-hp, 2.0-liter four that cranks
out 151 lb-ft of torque. Paired with a six-speed automatic trans-
mission, it gets an EPA-estimated 23 city and 31 highway MPG.
C'mon man: The Kia looks better than it performs: acceler-
ation and handling are not its strong points.

2014 FORD FIESTA STFord's aptly named Fiesta is high on fun and low on ducats (with
models starting around $15K). We test-drove the ST hatchback model
with sporty handling and peppy engine, which adds a few ducats to
the sticker price, but definitely ramps up the fun factor.
The ST's drive train — a 197-hp Ecoboost 1.6-liter four-cylinder
GTDi engine and 6-speed manual transmission — is perky and
nimble (0-60 mph in 6.9 seconds), as well as fuel efficient (26
city/35 highway). The ST is targeted to a younger demographic, so
it's loaded with plenty of cool, techy gadgets, including SYNC (Ford's
voice-activated communications and entertainment system), USB
inputs, Bluetooth connectivity, SD card slot, 6.5-inch touch screen
and a kickin' Sony sound system. Ambient lighting and optional
Recaro seats definitely ratchet up the "wow" factor. A lineup of fun
exterior color choices include Performance Blue, Green Envy, Race
Red and Molten Orange.
C'mon man: Some sacrifices had to be made given the ST's
small size: cubbyhole spaces (cup holders, center console and glove
box) are tiny.

2014 MAZDA3 I GRAND TOURING 4-DOORThe Mazda3, the third generation of Mazda’s sporty
compact, was redesigned for the 2014 model year. Its new light-
weight Skyactiv architecture boasts better aerodynamics and
decreased weight — which add up to better fuel economy and
performance. The new Mazda3 has sleek, sexy styling, with a
long hood, aggressive front grille, crisp edges, gentle curves and
cab-back design. It's offered in a 4-door sedan or 5-door wagon
with six trim levels. We test-drove the i Grand Touring 4-Door
with DOHC 2.0-liter inline-4 Skyactiv engine, which uses high
compression and carefully tuned exhaust systems to provide
power while extracting maximum efficiency from every drop of
gasoline. It cranks out 155 hp and 150 lb-ft of torque, with an
impressive 30 city/41 highway MPG. Mazda's infotainment
system looks like an iPad fused to the dashboard, delivering music,
Bluetooth, navigation and internet content with the intuitive
commander control dial strategically placed on the center console.

RESTYLANE
Under the umbrella of Restylane family
products (Restylane, Restylane-L, Perlane
and Perlane-L) comes a hyaluronic acid gel
formulated specifically to mimic your
body’s production of hyaluronic acid, a
naturally occurring substance that gives
skin its volume and fullness. This extra
boost of hyaluronic acid is biocompatible
with your body and will break down natu-
rally, visibly reducing facial wrinkles and
nasolabial folds in your face. When the gel
is injected, it acts like a cushion that
inflates to support facial structures and
tissues that may have lost volume or
elasticity due to normal aging.
Hyaluronic acid fillers also hydrate the
skin’s surface, keeping it looking fresh and
supple. There is no downtime after treat-
ment, and the results are immediate and
non-allergenic. The treatment has side
effects that are typical with any injection —
redness, pain, bruising, tenderness, etc. The
treatment takes about 30 minutes and
typically costs anywhere from $330 to
$1,000 per treatment.

ULTHERAPY
Ultherapy is a new, FDA-approved pro-
cedure designed to lift, tone and tighten
skin on your brow, neck and under your
chin — basically a mini facelift without the
knife. In a typical 60-90 minute procedure
using non-invasive ultrasound machines,
you will see gradual and therefore natural-
looking results. The idea is that focused
ultrasound energy, working from the inside
out to lift and tighten skin, will stimulate
the growth of new collagen over time, with
typical results seen in two to three months.
The most innovative part of this
therapy is that with the use of an ultra-
sound, treatment providers can actually
“see” where the wrinkles are and apply the
therapy to the exact area, taking the
guesswork out of the procedure. This
procedure can cost anywhere from
$2,000 to $6,000 depending on the area
of the treatments.

HYDRAFACIAL
This resurfacing procedure is one of
the most popular non-invasive treatments
available, boasting immediate results and
zero discomfort. Using fifteen minutes of
your time and a five-step process, the
HydraFacial uses a vortex suction to
remove impurities and apply antioxidants
and hyaluronic acid at the same time to
nourish and protect your face. HydraFacial,
a treatment that stems from microder-
mabrasion, has been reviewed and raved
about in multiple media outlets including
Allure, Bazaar, Good Day LA, Essence, and
The Doctors and by celebrities like Adrienne
Maloof, Marie Osmond, Paris Hilton and
Jillian Reynolds. If you’re looking to remove
wrinkles and fine lines, then getting the
facial done on a monthly basis is suggested.
Although this treatment has received
mixed reviews, the general consensus is
that it provides your face with more hydra-
tion than a typical facial for a longer period
of time. Its benefits will vary depending on
who administers the treatment, and you
will likely need multiple facials in order to
see significant results. The average cost of
a HydraFacial is around $215.

AS AN AVID CYCLIST, I spend a lot of time
outdoors year-round in a variety of climates,
including some that are dry and hot. While
exposed skin can take a beating from the
elements, it can benefit from them as well.
The rewards of exercise extend far beyond
slimming down or adding muscle tone.
• Exercise promotes blood flow that carries
nutrients to the skin cells and helps repair
skin damaged by the sun and environmen-
tal pollutants. Nutrients also increase the
skin’s collagen production to help fight
off wrinkles.
• Improved circulation gives skin a natural
healthy glow and helps reduce inflammation.
• Exercise also tends to reduce stress, which
can be a factor in certain skin conditions;
lower stress levels can lessen the effects
of skin breakouts.
• While exercising, we tend to drink more
water, which keeps our skin and body
hydrated, leading to a more supple, radi-
ant complexion.
• Regular exercise promotes better sleep,
which has a direct correlation to a healthier
looking complexion.
• Exercise fosters a systematic release of
toxins from the body, minimizing the
chance of clogged pores that could cause
a variety of unwanted skin conditions.
Just as the body needs to be nourished
and hydrated with food and water pre- and
post-exercise, the skin requires careful
attention after outdoor activity. With the
plethora of products available, more and
more athletes are opting for seasonal skin-
care regimens that are natural, organic and
proven to be effective — a great way to care

for the skin and the planet at the same time.
A few must-haves for outdoor athletes include:
• Soothing lip salve to keep lips supple and, when
necessary, to repair them from sunburn, windburn or
other ailments inflicted by harsh conditions. It’s an
easy item to keep on-hand during a variety of out-
door activities.
• Gentle purifying cleanser to use before and after
outdoor activities to keep skin clean and pores free of
excess dirt and oil. A light, refreshing, foaming cleanser
will leave skin with a soft matte finish and extend the
skin’s healthy, radiant glow post-workout.
• Hydrating toner to close pores, restore moisture,
soften skin, and protect skin from the elements of
the outdoors. You should apply toners after using a
gentle cleanser.
• Seed oil capsules filled with organic plant seed and
essential oils, which provide intense moisture for the
skin in a perfect dose. Seed oil capsules are for individual
use, making them ideal for travel or as a gym bag
essential. Simply open a capsule and massage its oils
onto your face for smooth, textured skin and a
healthy, even tone.
• A soothing, moisturizing cream to comfort and treat
any post-exercise blotchiness. A soothing cream will help
reduce inflammation and redness for a calm, even tone.
• Sunscreen to protect the skin from harmful and
potentially cancer-causing rays.
• An all-natural deodorant, free of parabens and
aluminum, to keep skin feeling fresh all day.
• Body polish to exfoliate dry, overexposed skin and
stimulate circulation — recommended twice weekly.
Making skincare a part of one’s fitness regimen
makes it more likely that skin will stay consistently healthy
and balanced and will contribute to overall health.

70 AZSPORTS&LIFESTYLE MARCH/APRIL 2014
Whatever you choose,
just start moving. Start
off by adding one or two
days at 20 to 30 minutes
to whatever you are
currently doing ...
This spring, achieve your fitness goals with a few simple changes
KISS STANDS FOR “KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID!”
I have used this acronym for a number of
areas in my life, my approach to a healthy
lifestyle being one of them. With so many
different types of workouts and diets,
being healthy can be a bit overwhelming.
Taking a simplistic approach, especially
when starting out, will help you get on
track to achieving your health goals.
When it comes to exercise, you may
ask yourself: “Should I do a split routine, full
body, CrossFit, yoga, Pilates, just cardio, or
maybe even all of them? Do I exercise seven
days a week or is one enough?”
My suggestion is to do what you want
as much as you can and then maybe just a
bit more (being mindful to take at least one
day off each week). You should consult with
a physician prior to starting any program,
and it might be helpful to meet with a
certified trainer or coach, as well.
Whatever you choose, just start
moving. Start off by adding one or two
days at 20 to 30 minutes to whatever you
are currently doing, as long as you are not
already going for six or seven days a week.
It is much easier to add one or two days
than it is to go from zero to six. It is also
easier to add just 20 minutes rather than
45 to 60. Not only will these suggestions
get you exercising more, they will build a
foundation from which you may eventually
go to 45 to 60 minutes each workout.
Unless you are in a specific class, lifting
workouts should be kept to 45 to 60
minutes. Cardio should be the same, but if
you are preparing for a marathon, half
marathon or an event, or if you are going
for a bike ride or hike, these numbers will
change. More is not always better. Doing
what works for you is best. I suggest you
take notes on how you feel during a partic-
ular workout and after. Do what you enjoy,
as long as it is some form of exercise.
Along with exercise, we have to be
mindful of what we eat. “I am going on a
low-carb diet.” “I will cut down on my fats.”
“I am going to drop my calories.” These are
just a few ideas people have when it comes
to what they’ll do with their eating habits.
Much like exercise, there is no one-size-
fits-all solution.
To keep it simple, though not neces-
sarily easy, I recommend that you eat clean

and go from there. This means limiting or
eliminating anything with trans fats, hydro-
genated oils, refined carbohydrates and/or
alcohol. These things can increase insulin
levels, cause the body to store fat and
increase your risk of certain health-related
diseases including diabetes, obesity, high
cholesterol, high blood sugar, etc. A simple
way to avoid these things is to stay away
from complex carbohydrates that are
white and/or packaged. These would
include white bread, white rice, white pasta
or anything boxed. Choose the less-
processed versions of these: brown rice,
whole grain or whole wheat bread or pasta,
yams, sweet potatoes and anything fresh.
Keeping solid fats out, such as butters,
margarine, nut butters with hydrogenated
oils and fatty cuts of meat and replacing
them with olive oil, avocado, avocado oil,
natural nut butters, flaxseed and flaxseed
oils are ways to keep fats in your diet while
getting rid of the poor choices. Chicken
breast, fish, turkey breast, protein shakes,
eggs, sirloin, flank steak and cottage cheese
are just some examples of lean protein
choices that should replace more fatty
cuts, such as bacon, sausages and ground
beef. A sample plan would be to have
veggies (whatever kind you like, but prefer-
ably greens) three times a day, fruit twice a
day, complex carbs twice a day, fats two to
four times a day and protein four to six
times a day. Track what you eat and how
you feel. Doing so will help you determine
the best plan for you.
Having your foods prepared and a bag
packed for the gym along with daily goals
are excellent ways to keep yourself on
track, not only with your health but in all
aspects of life. Start your day off by writing
three to five goals for that day and as you
achieve them cross them off the list and
state “I set __ goals and I achieved them!”
These daily goals and your recognition of
achieving them will help build your confi-
dence and ensure that you are on track to
attain your long-term goals.
Keep these goals simple to start. They
may be: 1. I will not eat any junk today. 2. I
will exercise today. 3. I will say “hi” and smile
at everyone I see. No matter your goals, get
after them!
So with spring here, what are you
going to do to start it off with a KISS plan?
Are you going to start off by moving more
than you already do? Maybe you are
already at your exercise limit and are going
to start the spring off by eating cleaner
and/or making sure your meals are pre-
pared so you don’t just grab bad food and
go. This may be the time that you choose
to start setting both long- and short-term
goals, including daily ones that encompass
all aspects of life. No matter what you
choose to do this spring, go after your
goals and keep them simple.

MADELINE AARON AND MAX SETTLAGE
ARE QUITE THE PAIR. No, not like that —
the two Arizona natives (Aaron hails from
Scottsdale and Settlage from Flagstaff)
are at the top of their game in the pairs
division of figure skating.
The pair are the U.S. National Junior
Pair Figure Skating champions and recently
represented Team USA at the final event
in the International Skating Union (ISU)
Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating (JGP)
Series in Estonia. This was the second JGP
event of the season for them, and they
placed fourth. Earlier in the season, they
placed second at a JGP event in Belarus.

AZ figure skaters Madeline Aaron and Max Settlage shine as a top pair
The pair also earned the 2013 U.S. junior
bronze medal and are the 2011 U.S. novice
champions, among many other accolades.
Aaron, 19, and Settlage, 21, teamed up
in 2010 when they met while training in
Scottsdale. Aaron, who attended Chaparral
High School, has been skating since the age
of 5 and Settlage began at age 10. Both
have experience skating with other partners
and solo, but seem to successfully comple-
ment each other on and off the ice.
“It [skating as a pair] is less nerve-
wrecking than skating all by yourself,”
Settlage said.
“With each other, we definitely have a
comfort zone,” Aaron added.
Currently, the duo train in Colorado
Springs, Colo., and will be competing in the
Junior World competition in March. Settlage
said they also have their sights set on the
2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea.

strength and cardiovascular work. They
also concentrate on off-ice lifts, dance and
yoga. Both skaters have a ballet back-
ground and enjoy using what they’ve
learned on the ice.
“With ballet skills we can tell a story
on the ice through dance movements,”
Aaron said.
The pair said they enjoy the graceful-
ness and artistry that comes along with
figure skating. And, with several interna-
tional competitions under their belts, they
have loved the traveling that comes along
with success in their chosen sport.

WHEN YOU'RE LOOKING TO BUY A HOME,
the first thing you might think to do is start
the process of house hunting. However,
experience proves that this is one of the last
steps you should be taking if you want to get
the most home for the least amount of
money. In reality, there is much more to
finding the right home than just house hunt-
ing. Here are a few tips on how to navigate
the process:
Shop for the best financing and start
long before you start shopping for a home.
Get pre-approved for a mortgage. This will
give you a number of important benefits,
including emotional security during the
house hunting process and insurance against
rising interest rates in the marketplace.
Mortgage brokers can obtain written
pre-approvals for you at no cost and no
obligation. More than just a verbal approval
from your lending institution, a written pre-
approval is literally “as good as money in the
bank.” It includes a completed credit applica-
tion and a certificate, which guarantees a
mortgage to the specified level when you
find the home you're looking for. Pre-
approval means no last minute shopping
around for money and rates; if rates go up,
you still get the pre-approved rate, but if
they go down, you receive the lower rate.
Being pre-approved is different than
being pre-qualified. Be sure that you go all
the way to pre-approval to guarantee the
benefits listed above.
As you get going with this process, you
will also need to find an agent. When you're
looking for an agent, make sure to ask these
important questions:
• Can you get me a quick, easy and free
mortgage pre-approval?
• Can I get special advance notice of
listings that computer-match my home
buying criteria?
Once you find an agent, you are one
step closer to starting the search for your
new home. At this point, you should start to
think seriously about what type of home you
want. Although most homes for sale are
re-sales, 25% of homebuyers purchase a new
home. Which is better — existing or new? The
right answer, of course, is up to you.
Both re-sales and new homes offer
advantages and most buyers consider both
new and re-sale homes before they decide.
Once you know what you are looking
for, consider utilizing house-hunting services
in your search. Leveraging the latest tech-
nology can give you an edge in the home
buying process. You can use web-based

If you simply provide your agent with a
brief description of the type of home you're
looking for, including information like the
number of bedrooms, price range, neighbor-
hood and so on, you can receive advance
notice (including pictures) of all the homes
for sale that match your requirements. This
will give you the competitive edge to find out
search sites that allow for very specific
searches and link you with local realtors.
Trulia.com and Zillow.com are some examples
of these sites, and both offer mobile device
apps that make searching even more
convenient. These and other recent apps for
both phones and tablets allow searches with
a GPS. If you’re driving through a neighbor-
hood or select an area or zip code from the
comfort of your living room, a private
search can be done with little or no interfer-
ence from an agent until you’re ready.
Your realtor can set up more advanced
searches that either allow for automatic
notifications on new listings in a defined area
or a monthly, weekly or daily update deter-
mined by the buyer or realtor. In addition,
most agents offer a house-hunting service
to make it easier for you to find the home
you want.
