LOOKING OUT FOR YOU

we told you about Braunstone HousingTeam’s initiative “Looking Out For You”. Thisis a way for housing to stay in touch with the

needs of the over 60s in the area. Housing staff areworking with our own Neighbourhood SupportTeam (NST), meeting older residents both in theirhomes and in community venues.Inge Shurmer from the Housing Team said “Thevisits are a way for our tenants to get to know usand for us to find out what they need. On somevisits I spotted things like repairs or maintenancethat I was able to get done or get on the repairsschedule. I’ve met some lovely people and wewere able to help one lady find a social group shecould join.”Ali Gamble from the NST said, “Inge and I havereally enjoyed visiting the older residents, andlistening to some great stories! Most people arehappy and have access to what they need but atleast they know where to come if anything crops up.Volunteers from the Residents’ Network have beenhelping us to try and reach as many households aspossible... and everyone has said that it has beena really worthwhile exercise. Now Christmas isover, we are back out offering support and advice.Look out for us, looking out for you!”

RESIDENTS’NETWORK

Happy New Year to you all from theResidents’ Network. We have been lookingback at the last year and feel that we are

beginning to have a real impact in thecommunity. We are not only interested in thebuildings, streets, and general surroundings butthe way people FEEL in Braunstone. We want to make a difference and we are doingthis by working together with everyoneconnected to living or working in Braunstone. So where do you come in?Well, we want to increase the number andspread of residents in the network. At our nextmeeting we will be looking at ways to develop a‘grapevine’ for passing information around theestate. As we have reported in our Network Newscolumn we have excellent representation on theNieghbourhood Management Board (NMB),with local residents chairing the meetings. Wefeel that this gives everyone connected to theBoard meetings, in what ever way, an equalstatus at the NMB table. As a group of residents we are happy that theNMB is an open forum for residents to havetheir views and news shared with others. Wefeel it presents real opportunities for us toinfluence service provision. We can bring aboutchange by gaining and feeding in up-to-dateand relevant information. Without this crucialelement Neighbourhood Management Board inBraunstone would not be as effective as it is.That’s a flavour of what we have done since westarted. We still have a lot to do and if you towant join us, see our notice on the back page orcontact Paddy, Anne or Ali on theNeighbourhood Support Team.

TAKE THE PLEDGE!

Carol Breward wants Braunstone to have more accessto fresh, organic fruit and veg. Through Families inFocus, Carol and colleagues have worked to raise

local awareness about healthy eating and use of landand gardens. Now the aim is to step up a gear. Carolsays, “We want to put in a bid to the Big Lottery Fund tomake it easier for families to get the best organic, healthy food all the time.”The proposed scheme is called ‘Pledge for Veg’ andCarol wants everyone in Braunstone to help support thebid. She says, “I want to show the Big Lottery that wehave consulted the community and have wide support.”So Carol is going round Braunstone asking residentsand groups to be photographed with the Pledge forVeg logo. “We are collecting photographs and aregoing to make a YouTube video toshow the support we have. We willalso be doing a wide publicconsultation to strengthen the bid.”Pledge for Veg will have allsorts of benefits forBraunstone. Carol tells usthat it will extend theworking of helpingfamilies learn abouthealthy eating and growingtheir own food. “We live inthe city but we can still grow fruit and veg. We want toestablish garden sharing, use of waste plots, smallbusiness, training courses on growing and preservingfood, an annual food fair and much more.”Even people with no garden space could benefit.

“However little space there is we can still growsomething... we could give you grow-bags or usewindow boxes and hanging baskets.”So if you want to support the Pledge for Veg bid, Carolwill be very pleased to hear from you. She says “If youwant to be photographed, want to send me a letter ofsupport or if you have other ideas then give me a call.”

JYOT’S HEALTH SPOT

Our very own Jyot the Chemist says, “Thank youto everyone who nominated me for a Worker inthe Community Award, I couldn’t believe it! It’s

nice to know that I am appreciated”Jyot asked us to talk about all of the services that youcan have for free, which is much more than just pickingup your prescription! Jyot told us about his stopsmoking programme. “Seeing as it’s the New Year, have a think about giving up smoking!” he suggested.Jyot offers a service which is friendly and helpful andallows you free access to patches or lozenges or thegum, and he gives you some useful information aboutthe ill effects it can have.Jyot says, “I will give you a carbon monoxidemonitoring check and talk to you about how we canwork together to give up. Please don’t feel that its notpossible for you if you have already tried these, because if you really struggle to give up then there arenow some new tablets on the market which I can helpyou to get from your doctor, I can write a letter ofsupport for you, to your GP.”He adds, “Smoking is very bad for you... did you knowthat smoking effects your hormones, causes vasoconstriction which leads to high blood pressure andeye problems and it can also cause palpitations!”This is not the only free service that Jyot offers…“Did you know that you can have a flu jab here? I don’tdo the swine flu jab, that’s for the doctors here at thesurgery, but I do recommend that if you suffer fromdiabetes or a heart condition, you should have bothjabs.”

“You can come in at any time for your flu jab, and whileyou are here, why not have a ten minute MOT! I cancheck your Body Mass Index, that tells us how muchfat is stored around the body. We check the bloodpressure, cholesterol, glucose levels and your risk ofheart disease.”Jyot also told us that he makes his own special coughand cold remedy which is cheaper than the name-branded stuff and according to him “more effective”Just ask in store and he will sort it out for you!“I really recommend that if you are suffering withswine flu, you should take paracetamols, fluids andplenty of rest, but for normal flu, come and get myspecial remedy.” Thanks for the tips Jyot!

HISTORY GROUPThe History Group is based at the BRITE Centre, and members are researching a variety of different elements ofBraunstone history. These include the Winstanley family, St Peters Church, the War Years and even ghost storiessurrounding Braunstone Hall! There was so much interest in Braunstone history, that we had to set up two groups. The two usually workindependently but they have come together on occasion. One example of their joint work was their visit to theRecords Office in Wigston, where they were allowed access to all sorts of original records and maps.Helen Catterwell, from Friends of Highway Spinney, is researching the land details of old Braunstone. She told us,

“I really love the group and am really benefiting from it.”The group will collate all their findings and devise a simple, fun way to display what they have found out. Like theother groups established though the Transformation Fund, the history group wants continue after the project hasfinished and looks forward to continued support from Val Smith and BRITE Centre staff.

WATERCOLOUR GROUP

The Watercolour group is going from strength to strength, and thanks to six weeks tutoringsupplied by Leicester Adult Skills, the group has produced some fantastic pieces, usingBraunstone as their inspiration, for display in the forthcoming exhibition at the BRITE

Centre. Thanks to the good will of the residents and staff at Sandyhurst on Hockley FarmRoad, the group also have a great venue to work in, and with the continued support of theTransformation Fund project workers, the group has grown in confidence, and are nowfunctioning as a self-supporting group. One of the group members, Sue Simpson, told us, “I had no previous experience ofwatercolour painting when I started the course. I am amazed by what I have achieved.”

TEXTILE GROUPThe Textile Group meets at the OAK Centre on Friday mornings. It is made up of two parts- the Sew n So’s and the Braunstone Women’s Community Group. Between the two theyare producing a really wide range of beautiful items. Their skills include small intricatejewellery making, cross-stitching, toy making, tapestry, knitting, quilting, clothes making. The women who take part say it’s a great way to learn new skills and

share what you know. One said, “It’s a lovely friendly atmosphere we have... we have agood gossip... find out what’s going on... have a laugh. It’s brilliant.”Another said “I was making things by myself at home, now I’ve got new friends andpeople to talk to. We look out for each other... I’m glad I came!”Like the other groups the Textile crew will be displaying some their creativity at theexhibition in March.

The start of the new year is also the start of a hectic threemonth period for everyone involved in this project. Half waythrough the programme, the staff and the learners are

gearing up for a major exhibition of Braunstone’s creative and artistic talents. The fund has allowed loads of people to be involved in learning for fun. The learning to datehas been about art, creativity and history. Now they have start working on their exhibitionpieces. Meanwhile the b-creative and b -connected team will be recruiting new people toget involved in planning the exhibition It’s not all work, work, work though. BACK IN BUSINESS!Anne, Ali and Paddy, Braunstone’s Neighbourhood Support Team (NST) have been ‘out and about’ more thanusual over the past few months. Of course, it’s an essential part of their job of working with the community, butthere was an extra factor... their office has been a building site! That’s all finished now, so we can introduce youto the new look 45 Wellinger Way.Team co-ordinator, Anne Short told us, “I am sure that many of you who take children to school or pop to theshops have noticed the building works outside number 45 over the past few months. I am proud to announcethat the building is vastly improved and is operating under the name Neighbourhood Support Base. We now havea bright, cheery place where we plan to exhibit local people’s artwork. It will be a mini community art gallery. Wealso have a quiet one-to-one room, a new separate group activity room, all of which is complimented by modernkitchen and accessible toilet facilities.”The Arts Development Team, Zoe and Lisa are based in the offices with Anne and co. As part of the new identityfor BCA (now b-inspired) the teams are working under the new banners b-connected and b-creative.Anne added, “We now have a great shop front, so look out for notices about up and coming community eventsand we’ll be happy to display community information for you. We’ll continue producing the Braunstone Alert hereso you can pop in for your copy. We are generally nosey people, it helps in our work, so are happy to hear yournews or stories for the next Alert edition. We like to say we make local people famous! You could be next.”

Anne is clearly enthusiastic about the new look. “The transformation of Wellinger Way is brilliant! It paves the wayfor many more opportunities to spread the word about the Braunstone community. We are planning to promotelocal artistic skills in our community gallery, hold resident get-togethers, have mini workshops... the ideas areendless.”There are even plans for the back yard, which has been a bit of a wilderness for years. “We want to improve thisa lot. In the Spring we aim to start developing the garden space as an extension to our community base duringthe Summer months.”The team is planning a launch day on Friday 5th February. “We will be open all day so you can come and meetus and have a look around. Drop in, have a cup of tea and a chat with us. We tell about what we do and how youmight be involved. We can help whether you want to be very active, for example through NeighbourhoodManagement or simply want to share your views and ideas. Come and talk to us... we look forward to meetingyou.”

HOUSING NEWS

Housing Manager Ellen Watts had several piecesof news for this edition. First is another successfulbid to the grants panel for security equipment.

“With this we will supply infra-red external securitylights for our tenants who are over 60 years old. Wewrote to everyone who is eligible, and have had anoverwhelming response... but just in case we havemissed you out you can ring us on 0116 252 7007. Ourteams will start installing the new lights soon”Braunstone residents who are not council tenants maystill be eligible for security equipment thanks to theJAG partnership. This has funds available for lightsand window film for any residents who are victims ofcrime or who have special circumstances. All youhave to do is contact any member of your local policebeat team.Ellen also wants to spread the word about a newemployment scheme. She said, “There is a schemecalled ‘Future Jobs Fund’ which I think will be great forBraunstone. The fund will help long term unemployed, especially 18 - 24 year olds, to get into work. The jobswill last between six months and a year. The aim is forpeople gain enough experience to find longer termemployment. The ‘Future Jobs Fund’ programme willteach skills relating to housing maintenance. Asidefrom the personal benefits, at a later date I would loveto see people from the scheme carrying ourmaintenance and repairs in Braunstone.Ellen has been working with Sergeant Will Cheshire todeal with a major concern, namely vandalism to emptyhouses. Ellen said “One attack caused over £10,000of damage... and because of how housing fundingworks, the money spent on dealing with this meansless money is available for normal repairs andmaintenance. It also means that people in need ofhousing are having to wait, for up to six weeks. Both Ellen and Will want this behaviour to stop andencourage residents to report such vandalism. Willsaid “You can report anonymously to police or housingor CrimeStoppers 0800 555111. Anything you say willbe confidential and will help us stop this behaviour.”Ellen added, “We are one of the few areas that stillhave to use sitex and this gives a bad impression ofBraunstone and reinforces negative views of the area. The main thing we want to get across is thatvandalising houses is bad for Braunstone and thatBraunstone residents are paying for it.”Ellen added “On a brighter, note the proposals fordeveloping the Bendbow site has been approved after

public consultation. I’ll have more news about that nexttime. Finally Ellen said that at a recent meeting heard JanetStatham idea of naming two jittys in North Braunstone,

“Will and I really loved the idea. I don’t know what thetechnicalities are but if it’s possible it would be great.Maybe we could have a competition to pick the names.I’ll let you know how that develops.”

Page 14: B Alert No.1 2010
