Bachelor-, minor- en mastervoorlichting BK CITY - In het voorjaar organiseert de Faculteit Bouwkunde een aantal voor-lichtingsdagen. Op 25 en 26 maart staat de Faculteit weer 2 dagen lang in het teken van de bachelor open dagen. Ontwerp jij een duurzame, drijvende woning voor Delft? DELFT - De gemeente Delft en Deltasync organiseren een ontwerpwedstrijd voor een duurzame, drijvende woning. Delftse studenten kunnen het ontwerp voor hun waterwoning indienen tot 15 juni 2010. Het winnende ontwerp zal worden gerealiseerd en de winnaar krijgt een betaalde stage bij Deltasync. DELFT – From 1995 up until now, the Annual has provided the BK community with a collection of scientific papers, student work and an overview of some major events that took place at the faculty in that year. But this year, from a financial point of view, the costs of the annual were considered too high for what it actually delivered. “In these times of scarcity, we had to re-evaluate the value of the Annual”, says Agnes Wijers, Manager of Marketing & Communication. “One of the biggest questions was: who is this book made for? It’s too expensive to use as a promotional gift, scientific papers can also be submitted to scientific magazines and student projects also have other media where they can be published. The added value of the book, the combination of students, science and events, doesn’t balance out the costs.”

The editorial board of the annual is not amused. John Heintz, one of the editors of the 2008-2009 issue: “There have been talks with the publisher on whether they could cut costs for us or maybe aid us by means of sponsor-ship. But if that’s not possible and if the faculty won’t come through, then it’s end of story”. Heintz doesn’t place all the blame on the faculty however. “What we see here is a small version of the macro-economic situation:

when the private market is having rough times, the government pulls out simultane-ously, when actually they should step in. This only worsens the recession. Now, the conse-quences of this become clear: certain things just disappear.”

According to Heintz, the disappearance of the Annual also has to do with the publication having to compete with other publications, mainly in acquiring scientific papers. “Quite a few architecture schools have an annual, but

Delft publishes several journals in addition to the Annual: for example Delft Architecture Studies on Housing, OverHolland and OASE (not published

by the TUD but mostly composed by TUD employees). And at the same time, the faculty seems to forget that the Architecture Annual is also a book of prestige, to present to the outside world.”

It is uncertain whether it’s definitely the end of the Annual. Wijers: “We are considering the possibilities to maybe publish it biannually, or splitting the Annual up in separate parts for students, researchers and employees. In any case, it’s not coming out this year and chances of an Annual in the current form next year are slim.” (MS)

BezinningMijzelf een weg banend langs

de bouwhekken en steigers die de straat van Bouwkunde zeker halveren in breedte, stoot ik per ongeluk een meisje aan. Dat gebeurt harder dan ik dacht: een zompige plons achter me blijkt de koffie te zijn die uit haar bekertje op de grond spat. Me omdraai-end om mijn excuses te maken krijg ik een vuile, maar tegelijker-tijd afwezige blik van haar terug voordat ze driftig doorstapt. Misschien was ze in haar hoofd te veel bezig met haar project om boos te worden op mij, of om nieuwe koffie te halen.

Het moment, dat niet eens vijf seconden duurde, was tekenend voor de sfeer van totale chaos die soms hier op Bouwkunde hangt: naderende deadlines, ook voor B Nieuws, betekenen vaker wel dan niet ‘laatste moment werk’, heen en weer rennen tussen allerlei mensen, diensten en afdelingen. Ze betekenen printen, plotten en finetunen, of in het geval van deze column, schrijven.

Vergeleken met deze chaos is het keuzevak dat ik aan het volgen ben – De Abri, MSc-2 Architecture – een baken van rust. Niet dat ik er niets voor hoef te doen, o nee zeker niet. Ik moet er gewoon hard voor werken. Maar welke andere docent vertelt je nog dat je de tijd moet nemen om naar de maquette die je gemaakt hebt, te kijken? Tijd waarin je de kwaliteiten en tekortkomingen van die maquette kan gaan zien, zodat je op een gedegen manier verder kan gaan ontwerpen: een moment van bezinning.

Veel mensen nemen deze tijd niet meer en zo ontstaat de twee alinea’s terug beschreven, chaotische sfeer. Zo ontstaat ook een zekere onverschilligheid over wat er om ons heen gebeurt. Veranderingsprocessen, in het onderwijs en in de samenleving, worden niet als zodanig herkend of worden zonder er verder over na te denken geaccepteerd. We hebben het simpelweg te druk.

Met een chaotische stem wordt omgeroepen dat de stroom in de hele TU-wijk wordt afgesloten en we voor 17:00 uur het gebouw moeten verlaten. En terwijl ik deze column typ realiseer ik me dat ook ik niet genoeg tijd neem voor bezinning. De B Nieuws moet immers af…

DELFT – Exacte cijfers over de hoeveelheid gevonden voorwer-pen en diefstallen zijn er niet, maar een snelle blik in het registratielogboek van het Servicepunt leert dat er zeker zes tot tien voorwerpen per dag worden afgeleverd. “Het zijn vooral bankpasjes, chippasjes en USB-sticks”, aldus Karin de Groot van het Servicepunt. “Als een voorwerp wordt opgehaald, vragen we legitimatie en een telefoonnummer, zodat geen voorwerpen aan de verkeerde persoon worden meegegeven.”

In het geval van diefstal geldt voor het slachtoffer: eerst melding maken bij het Service-punt. Deze schakelt vervolgens

DELFT – Van Die, together with other Bachelor students, noticed that the number of design projects was limited: “In the Bachelor phase there are 5 design projects which are the same for all students. I started talking to Dick van Gameren when he was giving a lecture once and asked him whether there were ever any master classes given at the faculty to supplement the existing courses, which concentrated on a single theme. There weren’t but he said that he would be interes-

ted in participating if one would be organized.” After Stylos was approached with the idea for a master class a new committee was formed. The large number of students who registered was a testimony to the fact that this type of activity is a missing element at the faculty.

Dat diefstal nooit helemaal voorkomen kan worden illustreren de recente diefstallen van laptops uit de Oostserre terwijl er presentaties bezig waren. Van Wijnbergen verzucht: “Als je eens wist hoeveel mensen hun spullen onbeheerd achterlaten...” Zelf kan je dus nog het meest doen ter diefstalpreventie: door bewust met je spullen om te gaan. Zeker als je je bedenkt dat van nog geen enkele diefstal de dader ook daadwerkelijk gevonden is. (MS)

The Masterclass set-up is simple: a group of students work together with a professor, in this case Dick van Gameren, and is asked to produce a conceptual design within the space of a work day. The Masterclass aims to eliminate the competition aspect of the design process and the traditional student-teacher relationship, creating an environ-ment where students can learn directly from the professor as well as from each other. Van Gameren was overwhelmingly positive: “I was happy about the mix of Bachelor and Master students. I also enjoyed the open exchange of ideas and just being able to tell the students how I would have done it. In the words of louis Kahn: ‘When I no longer have the urge to tell the student how I would do it then I will stop’. There should be more of this type of initiatives at the faculty.” now that the pilot has shown that there is a genuine demand for this type of activity, the Stylos Masterclass committee has begun organizing the next edition of the Masterclass with Eric luiten which will take place in May. Vanaf het begin van dit collegejaar blijkt dat er over deze thema’s onduidelijkheid bestaat op de faculteit. Dit heeft onder andere geleid tot heftige posteracties op Bouwkun-de.

Om de problematiek in kaart te brengen heeft Stylos in januari daarom de pantheonX Debat uitgegeven. Hierin stond de visie op de toekomst van Bouwkunde van verschillende personen uit de Bouwkunde gemeenschap: studenten, studentvertegenwoordigers, medewerkers, docenten, afdelingshoofden, het management team en de decaan. Deze publicatie diende als startpunt voor een verdere dialoog.

Op 20 april a.s. wordt de dialoog voortgezet met het door Stylos georganiseerde openbare faculteitsdebat. Dit debat wordt voor iedereen - werkzaam of studerend binnen de faculteit georganiseerd.

Het debat spitst zich toe op de drie belang-rijke thema’s die op dit moment in de faculteit leven: het onderwijs, de organisatie en de huisvesting. Stuk voor stuk actuele thema’s waar iedereen die hier op de faculteit werkt of studeert een mening over zal hebben.

DELFT - An associate professor at the department of Architecture, Robert Nottrot, has reconstructed a chair which was crafted by the architect Robert van ‘t Hoff in 1918. “It wasn’t my idea to make the chair. I was approached by Dolf Broekhuizen, who is curating an exhibition about Rob van ‘t Hoff at the Kröller Müller mu-seum. But I was enthusiastic about his proposal”.

The reconstruction wasn’t easy. “Originally, we had one small photo of the chair. Later we discovered some more photos of the interior of “De Stijl” house-boat with the chair in it. I made a digital model and tried to match it with the photographs. In the process we discovered that the old photograph was taken with a 35mm lens.” Astra Loning and Maarten Sintnicolaas of the faculty's Modeling workshop assisted with the reconstruction. After the exhibition, the chair will be included in the faculty’s ‘Schatkamer’ collection.

“This is the first time that I have reconstructed a chair. I usually work with architectural models. I particularly enjoy making models of unbuilt projects, such as a lot of works by the architect Melnikov”. (PS)

Bouwkunde heeft nu 3200 ingeschreven studenten, waarvan 2400 ook daadwer-kelijk actief zijn. het plan is om dat aantal terug te brengen tot 2000 actieve studenten.

de begroting van Bk is nu €33 mln. dit moet worden terug-gebracht tot €30 mln. hierop zijn ook de plannen van Mastering Bouwkunde gericht.de genoemde vier speerpun-ten zijn een antwoord van Bk op de vraag van het CvB, om nog verder te kunnen bezui-nignen tot €27 mln na 2012.

“de nieuwe track landschapsarchitectuur gaat in september beginnen en interieurarchitectuur zal eventueel een jaar later starten. het instituut voor geschiedenis en theorie zou ook in september kunnen draaien, nog niet officieel maar in oprichting. en anders wordt dat het jaar erna.”

“We zijn ook een boekje aan het maken, ‘My living faculty’, als antwoord op het gevoel van ‘My dying faculty’. daarin zullen we deze voornemens nogmaals uiteenzetten. We gaan het bespreken met de oC, de odC en de fsr en dan maken we het plan definitief.eind van deze maand weten we wat het CvB van onze plannen vindt en in de loop van april gaan we de plannen uitwerken. in het debat dat stylos op 20 april voor de studenten organiseert zal ‘My living faculty’ ongetwijfeld aan de orde komen.”

ook B nieuws zal natuurlijk niet stilzitten: we houden de ontwikke-lingen scherp in de gaten en zullen verslag doen zodra bepaalde zaken meer concreet worden.

DE STUDIEGIDS ALS DOOLHOF

iedereen zou eens een half uur door de studiegids moeten bladeren om te zien wat er met onze Msc studie aan de hand is.

We zijn doorgeschoten in keuzevrijheid. er is in de loop der jaren een wildgroei aan vakken en vakjes ontstaan. Wij confronteren onze student met een ondoordringbaar woud aan onnoemelijke mogelijkheden, waardoor het maken van een keuze een studie op zich wordt.

Wat opvallend is dat alle Msc programma’s per studio haast volledig dichtgetimmerd zijn, waardoor uitwisseling on-mogelijk is. ook is het volgen van vakken in een ander programma roostertechnisch onmogelijk, omdat er geen afstemming is tussen de verschillende studio’s. de rijkdom die we hebben aan aanbod wordt nauwelijks benut.

We zien dat dit stuwmeer aan vakken en vakjes enorme gelijkenis vertoond met een doolhof. ik heb daarom voorgesteld het programma beter te gaan structureren, met voor alle tracks een zelfde opzet. We noemen dit harmonisatie. dit jaar gaan we starten met de harmonisatie van architectuur en Bouwtech-nologie en in het najaar volgen stedenbouw, real estate & housing en geschiedenis.

het uiteindelijke doel van dit alles is overzichtelijkheid en studeerbaarheid. eenvoudig zal dat niet zijn. ik hoop op al jullie medewerking.

1. Onderwijs“We zien dat er vanuit de praktijk behoefte is aan gespecialiseerde landschapsarchitecten en aan interieurarchitecten. In de nieuwe Wet op de architectentitel (WAT) krijgen de interieurarchitect en de landschapsarchitect ook titelbe-scherming. We gaan aan de vier afstudeertracks die we al hebben landschapsarchitectuur toevoe-gen en we zijn aan het onderzoe-ken hoe we interieurarchitectuur ook als aparte track kunnen opstarten.”

“Verder is Bouwkunde een bijzondere faculteit op het vlak van geschiedenis van bouwkunst en op het vlak van theorie. We zijn met History, DSD en Architec-ture uniek in onze aan ontwerpen gerelateerde benadering. Hier-voor willen we in de toekomst een nieuw instituut opzetten. Wij willen met dit instituut nagaan of wij joint-masters kunnen opzetten met Kunstgeschiedenis van de Universiteit Leiden. Op deze manier creëren we kansen om ons aanbod van opleidingen te verruimen.”

2. Aantal studenten“Een tweede strategie is om het aantal studenten te verminderen. Dat klinkt heel raar, maar we moe-ten veel selectiever zijn. Vorig jaar kwamen er 700 nieuwe studen-ten, maar er vallen in het eerste jaar zo veel af dat we willen onderzoeken of we door middel van een toelatingsexamen kunnen selecteren. We krijgen teveel studenten die hier een jaartje komen omdat ze bijvoorbeeld zijn uitgeloot voor Geneeskunde. We willen meer mensen die vanaf het begin gemotiveerd zijn om Bouwkunde te studeren. Dat bete-

kent dat we met dezelfde omvang van de staf minder studenten gaan begeleiden, je zou kunnen zeggen dat dat een kwaliteitsver-hoging moet opleveren.”

4. Extern geld uit onderzoek“Wat extern geld uit onderzoek betreft hebben we in vergelijking met andere faculteiten veel te winnen. We zijn voor de derde geldstroom bezig in de wereld van overheid, bouwmaatschap-pijen, vastgoed en opdrachtge-vers waar behoefte is aan privaat gefinancierd onderzoek. Voor de tweede geldstroom, wetenschap-pelijk onderzoek, is het moeilijker omdat dat heel erg gedomineerd wordt door de gewone universi-teit. De ontwerpende disciplines zijn daar zwak in vertegenwoor-digd. Dat lukt niet in een jaar, daar moet je in investeren.”

3. Overhead en huisvesting“Een derde speerpunt is het verminderen van overheadkosten, de kosten van de organisatie van de faculteit en de TU. Ongeveer 40% van de onkosten die we maken zitten in wat we de staart noemen: huisvesting, diensten enzovoort, wat buiten het onderwijs en onderzoek om gaat dus. Wij willen kijken of dit efficienter kan, ook op TU niveau: om uiteindelijk de overheadkos-ten tot 25% te reduceren.”

“Daar hoort de huisvesting ook bij. Dat wordt het project BK City Slim. De huisvestingslast en met name de energielast van dit gebouw willen we hiermee aanpakken: een project om te kijken hoe we dit gebouw duurzaam kunnen maken. BK City moet een gebouw worden dat voorbeeldig omgaat met de belasting op het milieu. Wij vinden dat wij als TU aan onze stand verplicht zijn om daar iets bijzonders van te maken. Daarom is een projectgroep, een stuur-groep en een adviesgroep ingesteld om de komende maanden in beeld te brengen hoe we dit kunnen bereiken. Je reduceert daarmee niet de hele overhead maar het is een belang-rijk onderdeel ervan.”

Andy van den Dobbelsteen is a fulltime professor of the chair of Climate Design and Sustain-ability, within the department of Building Technology.

Andy is joint coordinator of the CIB Working Commission W116. He is jury member of the Nationale Renovatieprijs (national renovation award) and leader of the interdisciplinary research project SREX (Synergy of Regional Planning and Exergy). He was head of the chair to the international conference on Smart and Sustainable Built Environments (SASBE2009) and to the Advisory Committee to the Dutch Green Building Council (DGBC).

Andy is external examiner at the Manchester Metropolitan University and is involved with national climate adaptation programmes and the Rotter-dam Climate Initiative. Andy gained his doctorate in 2004 with a dissertation on sustainable office accommoda-tion. Andy Spoke out his inaugural lecture, ‘Use your potential! Sustainability through local opportunities’, on Friday 5th of March.

In your role as head of the chair of Climate Design and sustainability, will you be placing more emphasis on sustainability, and less on technology? yes and no. We will not necessarily place less empha-sis on technology. technology will always play an important role in our approach, but in an integrated way.the core of Climate Design is the use of technology as a means to an end, not as a goal an sich. It’s about the smart integration of technology and design, in which local factors such as climate, soil and environment are better incorporated into building design and urban planning, making sustainable use of resources. It’s about designing in a smart way, with technology that can be implemented to reach these smart solutions. On the other hand, the emphasis on sustainability increases, because there is so much more work that has to be done on this topic. the emphasis lies on expanding the scale of our approach, beyond technology or architecture. a lot of problems, concerning mainly energy, cannot be solved on the scale of the individual building. that’s why we have to expand the scale of our approach to a sustainable urban approach.

one of the research projects you conduct is Green Building Innovation. Is this a good example of the integration of

technology and sustainability in design? yes it is. It’s a collabo-rative research program we are taking part in, together with five other chairs of the Faculty of architecture, all from the depart-ment of Building technology. Green Building Innovation focuses on further development of our knowledge and competence, while linking this to several themes, which are currently of great practical importance to society, and theoretical impor-tance to science. the themes we have defined are CO2 neutral design, climate adaptation, energy innovation and the closing of cyclical processes.these themes are not only relevant to the academic world. Companies also want to develop their knowledge on several of these themes, so our intention is to expand these research projects in the future. But to make that possible we will also need more students, and subsequently phDs.

Concerning your comments on the need for a larger scale approach: has the scope, now and in the past, been too limited? you could say so, but this limited scope is understand-able. Since the netherlands initiated its sustainable building policy in 1990 the focus has always been on small-scale changes. It’s an approach which allows the old way of doing things to be preserved. adjusting the details, but not the big picture. especially with our country’s energy demand, in relation to the energy resources we have, it would be better to focus on

changing processes on a larger scale. this will make the differ-ence. Currently we have a much more complex task ahead of us. not only looking at sustainable architecture, but also at cities that need to function as a sustainable organism.

What does that specifically mean for the relationship between the architectural scale and the urban scale? again, cities should function as organ-isms. Using the residues of one function for the other, reacting intelligently to the changing weather conditions, exploiting the soil, which is rooted in the environment. this has to take place on the scale of the city. Of course a lot can be done in one building to achieve higher energy efficiency. But that is not feasible. also, it makes no sense for buildings to act like autistic individuals, standing right next to each other in the city without reacting to each other. I believe we already have the knowledge and technology to develop these sustainable cities, but what we lack is the political courage to radically change the current policy.

To deal with sustainability on a larger scale, one must be aware of the urgency of the subject matter. Do you notice this awareness among students? that is difficult to say, because most architecture students focus mainly on buildings, and not on the larger scale. It is necessary to have people who dare to stretch the envelope of their profession

of, for example, resources. What would this period of transition ideally look like? the coming elections in the netherlands are of great importance in determin-ing how this transition will take place. If the future governing parties will completely neglect sustainability then our country will fall behind in terms of innovation compared to other countries. as a result of this, 15 years from now the netherlands will completely depend on the energy supply of other countries. a first step in preventing this doomsday scenario is for us all to acknowledge the urgency of developing sustainable solutions in the built environment and beyond. the eternal discussion of whether our way of doing things should change and what sustain-ability actually means, doesn’t help us move forward. So what can we do? Start with making sustainable buildings and start with developing existing urban environments into environ-ments that don’t have to depend on external energy resources. the ecological footprint, especially of cities, is enormous and cities have a responsibility to do something about this. If in the coming 15 years all sustainability projects are set up, and they are allowed to develop further, then the transi-tion is set into motion. then the need for ‘old energy’ will diminish and the energy needs can increasingly be met by local and renewable sources. this process, or this transforming of the exiting building stock, that I call e-nova-tion (energy renovation innova-tion), is what has to be imple-mented right away.

so there is a definite urgency in tackling these issues? you could say our generation is a chosen one. the next generation will be too late, and the last generation, the one now in power, has not paid enough attention to this problem. the ‘first sustainable generation’ were students of the seventies, who are reaching retirement as we speak, so they have limited influence. In my opinion this unique responsibility is our challenge. and that’s how we should approach it: as a wonderful opportunity to bring about important changes to benefit our future world. I’m eager to take on this challenge, and I hope students are too.

and who can jump between different scale levels. the task of the architect is to find a balance between technical innovations on the one hand, e.g. how the skin of the building works, and on the other hand to determine intelligently architec-ture’s position in the urban envi-ronment, while figuring out what the relationship can optimally be with surrounding buildings. One must search for local ‘potentials’, which are the specific qualities of the site.

Can you state an example? the energy used by supermar-kets is mainly used for cooling. that means that on the other side of the air conditioner a huge amount of heat load is produced and at this moment, wasted. this heat load can be made useful to heat neighbour-ing retail, dwellings and sport facilities. another example of an opportunity we miss is to combine a swimming pool, which requires continuous heating, with an ice-skating rink.Because of the abundance of fossil fuel resources we forgot to benefit of the local energy potentials that are at hand. Without being cut-off from the

often architects use sustain-ability just as a selling point, as a marketing gimmick. Is it clear enough for people what it is, and also what it is not? the definition of ‘sustainability’ is broad but very clear. the best way to define sustainability is the way South africans do: Volhou-baarheid. 99% is just common sense. you constantly have to ask yourself: “Can I justify my designs or creations to my children and grandchildren? Can I justify them to future genera-tions? Will my designs affect the climate in a negative way? Have I designed a healthy building? Can further generations adapt the building in such a way that it can acquire a totally different function in the future? I get the feeling that people who pay little attention to sustainable solutions often hide behind the questioning of what sustainability really is. It’s avoiding the issue.

In your inaugural address you mentioned the fact that it is an important time of transition in terms of a more sustainable use

Do you notice that a lot of students make the mistake of designing a building without taking the context seriously into account? I’m afraid so. that’s understandable, as cancelling out the context often makes an assignment a lot easier and you can really focus on architectural means. But it also makes the design less realistic. this doesn’t only concern students, but also practising architects. you often see excellent architectural designs, which focus on the building itself. On draw-ings you almost never see the environment around the building because that is seen as polluting the image, as disturbing your own beautiful architecture.

take a look at office buildings around the world. they all look exactly the same, but are situated in a totally different environment and climate. architecture always has a context, and if you ignore this context, you exclude the opportunity to develop integrated solutions. If you want to design in a smart and sustainable way, you

DELFT De Bacheloropleiding Bouwkunde is nu geheel ver-nieuwd. in september 2007 werd begonnen met een nieuwe Bsc 1, waarna elk semester de volgende Bsc vernieuwd werd. in het laatste semester van de bachelo-ropleiding draait alles om integrale gebiedsontwikkeling. Het planningsproces werd nagebootst door middel van een management game,waarin elke student een bepaalde rol vervulde (er was bijvoorbeeld een ambte-naar milieu, een verkeersdeskun-dige en een stedenbouwkundige) en met zeven of acht andere studenten aan de slag moest om een verantwoord en geïntegreerd masterplan te maken. Na de afloop van de managementgame heeft elk student nog 7 weken om een domeinspecifieke uitwerking (een ontwerp) te maken.

er werden vier prijzen aan de studenten uitgereikt: een prijs voor het beste presentatieaffiche, het beste groepsproces, het meest creatieve masterplan en het meest realistische masterplan. De prijzen zelf waren bijzondere objecten: een startmotor voor het beste affiche, een oud wiel voor

het groepsproces dat het meest "op rolletjes" liep, een zijruit voor het meest creatieve masterplan ("want door een zijruit heb je een ander uitzicht dan door andere ruiten" aldus Patijn) en een stuurwiel voor het meest realisti-sche plan ("die sturen ons de toekomst in" aldus wethouder smits). Alle 'prijzen' zijn afkomstig uit het gebied de Binckhorst, een gebied dat onder andere bekend staat om zijn vele autosloperijen.

Alleen de meest creatieve en realistische plannen werden door de studenten gepresenteerd, gevolgd door een discussie en vragen van de juryleden, die heel vaak in een discussie tussen de juryleden onderling eindigde. tijdens de discussie deed Patijns opmerking dat het meest crea-tieve plan ook het meest realis-tisch plan was, omdat dat masterplan het meeste geld tijdens de exploitatie zou opleve-ren, veel stof opwaaien. Wethou-der smits reageerde dat men niet kan verwachten een gebied als de Binckhorst winstgevend te maken, zeker niet als men daar 30% sociale woningbouw wil realiseren. “met de helft van dit percentage aan sociale woning-bouw kom je uit op positieve opbrengsten van 50 miljoen, met het volledige programma sociale woningbouw draai je een verlies

van 150 miljoen”. Het meest creatieve plan had maar 20% sociale woningbouw, “wat ook een keuze is, maar die moet u zorgvuldig maken” aldus wethou-der smits.

Ook over andere speerpunten was de jury verdeeld, bijvoorbeeld over mobiliteit. Waar Patijn en Asselbergs vooral de nadruk legden op het verminderen van het autogebruik en het intensief stimuleren van openbaar vervoer legde de wethouder de nadruk op de Binckhorst als een nieuwe entree van Den Haag, met een belangrijke verkeersrol voor de hele stad (er komt straks A13 uit in het gebied). Hij stelde dat er ruimte moet zijn voor auto’s, omdat de bewoners hun auto’s in de wijk willen kunnen parkeren. “Zonder parkeermogelijkheden creëer je een mooie wijk zonder inwoners”, aldus smits. De vraag of ‘Binckje Binck wordt’ (aldus de titel van ‘het meest creatieve plan’) werd deze middag niet beantwoord, maar de wethouder heeft alle plannen in ontvangst genomen om misschien tot nieuwe inzichten over de ontwik-keling van de Binkchorst te komen. Voor studenten en medewerkers van de faculteit was de kous hiermee nog lang niet af. tijdens de afsluitende borrel werd nog volop gediscussieerd

over de prijsuitreiking en de ontwikkeling van de Binckhorst. Nu nog afwachten wat het nieuwe, nog te vormen College van de gemeente Den Haag voor plannen heeft met de Binkchorst en of deze plannen deels geinspi-reerd zijn door de plannen van Bachelor 6 worden.

De Binckhorst is een 130 hectare groot industriegebied in Den Haag, ontstaan uit een voormalig weiland met een kasteeltje (dat het gebied zijn naam gaf) aan de rand van de stad. In de jaren ‘30 van de vorige eeuw wilde de ge-meente het gebied tot een modern industriegebied ontwikkelen, maar de econo-mische crisis voorkwam dat er een structurele visie voor het gebied kwam. Het gebied ligt op loopafstand van Den Haag HS en CS en heeft een niet onaantrekkelijke ligging ten opzichte van het centrum van Den Haag. De gemeente Den Haag heeft daaorm in 2007 besloten dat het gebied potentie heeft en wil het ontwikkelen tot een hoogst-edelijk stadskwartier. Het oorspronkelijke masterplan voor het gebied werd door OMA gemaakt, maar door de recente financiële crisis bleek dit plan financieel onhaalbaar. Het huidige masterplan uit 2009 is gemaakt door Floris Alkemade, destijds partner bij OMA.

ProLoog in rotterdam, de stad van daden in plaats van woorden, de stad waar geen bouwkraan onbenut wordt gelaten, daar is uit de historisch geladen leegte, een leegte ontstaan zonder weerga. een metamorfose heeft de drukke hoofdas doen veranderen in ledigheid. als door een wonder van hogere hand, is in het hart van rotterdam een plek ontstaan door een kaalslag.

eerste beDrijf een korte verhandeling over de geschiedenis van de Coolsingel vertelt hoe de ruimte van een singel voor het transport over water tot een ruimte met een autobaan voor vervoer over land is gewor-den. eens was de Coolsingel een echte singel die de stad begrensde aan westelijke zijde. na de demping rond 1920 werd de singel bevorderd tot hoofdstraat van de stad, met een grootstedelijke allure. het bombardement verandert de Coolsingel van een klassieke hoofdas in een modernistische doorgangsweg, zo is de Coolsingel de afgelopen 50 jaar gebleven. maar op een goede dag komt hier verandering in. De status quo van het voortrazende verkeer wordt doorbroken door een miraculeuze metamorfose. van het ene op het andere moment transformeert de verkeersbaan voor auto’s in een verkeersbaan voor vliegtuigen.

tweeDe beDrijf een onheilstijding heeft de stad bereikt. Uit een transportbaan voor autoverkeer is op de Coolsingel een landingsbaan verrezen. De eerste vliegtuigen dienen zich al aan. naar analogie met Die verwandlung zullen de aangrenzende gebouwen zich moeten verenigen tot luchthaven.De gebouwen hebben zich geopend om de vliegtuigen te kunnen herbergen. Ze zijn aaneengeregen door massa om het extra programma te faciliteren. Ze zijn samengesmeed door een gevel tot geluids-barrière. en dit alles heeft plaats gevonden zonder grootscheepse sloopacties.maar het verhaal is niet ten einde. ook in het verhaal van kafka, waarbij gregor verandert in een tor, is het verhaal niet over als vervolgens de familie opbloeit. gregor wordt niet meer herkend door zijn familie en verteert langzaam van de honger. hetzelfde geschiedt op de Coolsingel. met het vervolma-ken van de luchthaven is de oude Coolsingel niet meer te herkennen, en wordt het tijd voor de vliegtuigen rotterdam te verlaten.

DerDe beDrijf De lucht is opgeklaard boven rotterdam. Uit het lawaai van de vliegtuigen volgt de wedergeboorte van de Coolsingel. net zoals gregor plaats maakt opdat zijn familie kan floreren, wordt het oorspron-kelijke hart van transport uit de Coolsingel gehaald. Langzaam maar zeker verandert de asfaltvlakte in een vlakte gevuld met bloemen en planten. De particuliere schoonheid van de nieuw ontstane ruimte op de Coolsingel, wordt gevonden in de paradox tussen enerzijds de kaalslag van de straat en anderzijds het verdichten van de bebouwing eromheen. De ruimte op de Coolsingel is ontdaan van aanbouwsels en inbouwsels. De onregelmatige zijden van de straat zijn opgelost in een rechte gevel. Door het contrast tussen de zwaarte van de massa en de lichtheid van de open ruimte, is de Coolsingel monumentaal geworden. hoewel de oorspronkelijke functies de gebouwen weer innemen, zullen ze door de aanpassing een nieuwe relatie aangaan met de Coolsingel. De Coolsingel zal zijn als een weergaloze ruimte.

The True Believer

This world is driven by believers. Belief in a better future is one of the main motors of our existence. Who doesn’t want to believe? ‘Yes we can’ was already a popular motto before an American president started his career with a sentence that soon proved to be a cover-up for the opposite. But we still believe!

The Faculty of Architecture in Delft seems to be the real school for believers. Believers that have formed a sect. Positivism glows from every face; every object is turned into an architectural milestone. ‘Yes we can’ is no longer a motto: it has become a religion.

Who believed Minister Plasterk when he generously offered 25 million Euros for the construction of an architectural icon? Yes, we did, even if we knew it was impossible. It gave us a chance to organize a competition and, of course, a symposium. Did we think that that was money well spent? Yes, we did. Did we think that the building so religiously remodified would only be a temporary place of reverence, even if the usual guru’s were allowed to put their tokens in every room and on every wall? Yes, we did! Did we think that the education would be improved by making it more exclusive by buying design furniture? Yes, we did!

Who thought that the age of ‘love and peace’ could be an inspiratio-nal time for architecture and architectural thinking? Yes, we did! Who thinks that architecture is no longer a profession but has become a ‘craft’? Yes, we do!

Did anyone think that with the renovation of BK Universe the building would get a moment of rest and not be immediately remo-deled after the first flaws ap-peared? Yes, we did. Even the old building was never left in peace but was constantly ‘refurbished’ illustrating that architecture is a

living art. Did we not think that the Faculty of Architecture is a sort of bank, where glorification is granted from above and not from below? Yes, we did! Does anyone think that the wall of fame (in front of the library) is curiously full, implying that all the masters of architectural knowledge have been named? Yes, we do!

Who does not think that the new tabloid format B Nieuws is the best because the shorter items are (supposedly) of more interest? Who does not think that the appointment of the new professor of Politics and Design, installed by politicians from above, is the best way to retreat back to the Seventies, and blame the archi-tects again...? Yes, we do! Who does not think that our Faculty is ahead of its time instead of crawling thirty years behind all things? Yes, we do!

Who does not think that instead of docile creatures we are

creating fabulous, individual thinking intellectuals that know who to operate in a reality that they can hardly understand? Yes, we do.

I have counted my words, almost 480, but who does not believe that they are ‘spoken into the void’, ‘lost in space’, far out there on the border conditions? Kneel down, my friends, our kingdom has or will come, after all the juice has been squeezed out of the institution. It will not be red, it will not be blue, it will be every-thing you believe to be true! But first let us get rid of that blasphe-mic discipline called history that wants to hold a mirror in front of those who profess the real religion of architecture. Let’s rock and roll!

Als kind leerde je het al: - Op een onbewoond eiland - Zijn alle dagen fijn - Op een onbewoond eiland - Daar zou ik willen zijn.

Hoewel we ons bevinden in een robuust gebouw met rare sausjes, hoeft dit geen reden te zijn om kleur te bekennen en enkel binnen deze kleur te functioneren. Het ‘kutkloten op je eigen eiland’ lijkt meer regel te worden dan uitzondering.

Gedesoriënteerd zie je soms door de posters het bos niet meer. Een bos van kennis waarin professoren de hoge bomen zouden moeten zijn waar de studenten vrolijk tussendoor huppelen. Hoewel de kennisbo-men de longen van dit instituut zouden moeten zijn, lijken studenten vooral op elkaar aangewezen om hun eigen struikgewas te vormen.

Verscholen achter een kakofonie van posters zijn de ware prikkels te vinden. Prikkels van kennis en inzicht, die je uitdagen een houding aan te nemen. Zolang de posters –binnen de grenzen van het magneetbord- een onderlinge strijd aangaan, zal de muur nog dikker worden. De muur die je zou moeten uitnodi-gen spontaan een college te volgen of een professor achter zijn computer weg te lokken.

Er is frisse lucht nodig. Frisse lucht die de hoge bomen wakker blaast en ze stimuleert zelf frisse lucht te produceren. Frisse lucht die je een kant op blaast. Een posterloze frisse lucht?

Een faciliterende ruimte lijkt nodig: het onbewoonde eiland. Een plaats waar je als identiteits-loze kiem omhoog durft te kijken en een boom uitzoekt die helpt jou te vormen; waar ook het omgekeerde mogelijk is: hoge bomen die blij verrast zijn door de ambities van de kiem en samen een plan maken om naar elkaar toe te groeien. Groeien zonder wortel te schieten zodat het onbewoonde eiland onbewoond blijft.

Binnen de grenzen van dit gebouw lijkt het lastig een onbewoond eiland aan te wijzen. Kleine veranderingen in mentali-teit kunnen de fundering voor het onbewoonde eiland vormen. Deze veranderingen moeten uit de bewoners van het eiland zelf komen.

Durf een collegezaal binnen te lopen, pak in de kantine die laatste lege stoel naast Winy, tape je koffiekaart vast in het apparaat, haal de poster die je niet bevalt van de muur: durf te durven. Kortom: de eerste stap naar frisse lucht is die grote boom water geven – of koffie.

What do you think about the faculty staying at Julianalaan?

I work in the library, and I am very satisfied with my workplace. It’s a great location, so we can stay here. I didn’t work in the old building, I worked at Civil Engineering before, but I think the library here is more practical; there are fewer stairs. Also, the faculty is 10 minutes by bike from my house, so it’s very practical.

I like this building, but there is not enough space, sometimes you need to go all the way to Aerospace for some classes. I like it here, so the faculty need-n’t have to move, even though we need more space. I like the fact that it’s near the station.

I think it doesn’t matter; there are always advantages and disadvantages, whatever decisions you make. This is a beautiful building with a lot of history, plus the location is much better. This buildings is cozier, you walk through the whole building. In the old building, you just went to one floor and that was it.

I never spent any time in the old building, though I’ve seen pictures, so I’m not sure I can make comparisons. I like the orange hall and the model area where you can see people working. I prefer the current location too. I take it as a positive thing that we have classes in different faculties; you get to see the different environment there.

I think it’s a pity; there was a whole competition with great ideas, and new building types could be potentially developed from it. There is not enough space, and if we had a new building, you could always make it bigger. I always walk from the station, so I do like the location, though I do miss the connection with the campus.

I think the building and the spaces are very beautiful, like the modeling hall (maquette-hal), but I don’t like going to the Auditorium, where it’s extremely difficult to make notes. I don’t think this building can be expanded. But a new building would mean new opportunities, and the old location is closer to other faculties.

It would be a waste of money to build a new building, and this building has a great atmosphere. Though I do notice that all my lectures are now outside the faculty. I do not think it’s a big problem, but they might want to limit the number of first years, so it’s less crowded.
