De Hallen Haarlem is proud to present the first solo museum exhibition of Maaike Schoorel. Schoorel (Santpoort, 1973) studied at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam and at the Royal College of Art in London, her current place of resi-dence. The artist ’s ethereal paintings frequently reference classic, often quintessentially Dutch genres like the group portrait, the beach scene and the still life, although these usu-ally aren’t recognised as such at first glance. De Hallen Haarlem presenteert met trots de eerste museale solotentoonstelling van Maaike Schoorel. De kunstenaar (Santpoort, 1973) studeerde aan de Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam en aan het Royal College of Art in haar woon-plaats Londen. In haar ijle schilderijen grijpt Schoorel te rug op klassieke, vaak Nederlandse schildergenres als het groepsportret, het strandgezicht en het stilleven, hoewel deze meestal in eerste instantie niet als zodanig herkenbaar zijn. Haar voorstellingen zijn uiterst spaarzaam geschilderd en openbaren zich pas na langere tijd aan de kijker – als herin-neringen uit een ver verleden die langzaam maar zeker weer contour krijgen.
De tentoonstelling presenteert werk van de afgelopen vier jaar, waarbij de nadruk ligt op Schoorels meest recente pro-ductie. Van een klein en elegant stilleven, via het monumen-tale Parnassia Beach tot aan een serie naakten, wordt zicht-baar hoe de voorstelling binnen de schilderijen steeds verder wordt gereduceerd: van kleurrijke figuratie naar een sugges-tieve en uiterst spaarzame beeldopvatting die slechts ruimte laat voor de meest minutieuze details.
Schoorel neemt met haar ingetogen werk een radicale positie in binnen de hedendaagse beeldcultuur, die wordt gedicteerd door snelheid en zichtbaarheid. De reductie van haar voor-stellingen is zo extreem dat de kijker wordt gedwongen tot opperste concentratie. Hij moet in zekere zin zijn aangeleerde ‘zap’-kijkgedrag opgeven. Maaike Schoorel’s werk is onmis-kenbaar van deze tijd: in een stilleven is het logo van een fles Spa te herkennen, en de figuren in haar (groeps)portretten dragen de vrijetijdskleding van de hedendaagse leisure class. Vanwege het zorgvuldig balanceren tussen verschijnen en verdwijnen is de wereld die Schoorel ons toont er een waar de klok langzaam tikt en de blik naar binnen is gericht.
Bij de tentoonstelling verschijnt een geïllustreerde publicatie, met een interview met Maaike Schoorel door Xander Karskens en een essay van Maxine Kopsa, uitgegeven door Veenman Publishers (vormgeving: Julia Born en Laurenz Brunner). Tijdens de tentoonstelling te verkrijgen voor de speciale prijs van EUR 20.

often painted with an extreme economy of means, and only reveal themselves to the viewer after an extended period of time – like memories of a distant past that slowly but surely regain shape in one ’s mind.
The current exhibition presents work from the last four years, with an emphasis on Schoorel’s most recent production. Ranging from a small and elegant still life via the monumen-tal work Parnassia Beach to a series of nudes, the exhibition brings the progressive reduction of the scenes depicted to light: from colourful representation to a suggestive and ex-tremely sparse visual conception that only reserves space for the most minute details.
With her subdued work, Schoorel takes up a radical position within contemporary visual culture, which is dominated by speed and explicitness. The reductive nature of her scenes is so extreme that the viewer is obliged to pay the utmost atten-tion. In a certain sense, the viewer is forced to give up his ac-quired tendency to ‘scan’ images when viewing her art. Maaike Schoorel’s work is unmistakeably contemporary: one can recognise a Spa logo on a bottle in one of her still lifes, and the people in her (group) portraits wear the comfortable clothing of the modern-day leisure class. Thanks to the care-ful balance that is struck between appearance and disappear-ance, in the world shown to us by Schoorel time passes slowly and the gaze is turned inwards.
The exhibition is accompanied by an illustrated publication that includes an inter-view with Maaike Schoorel by Xander Karskens and an essay by Maxine Kopsa. It is published by Veenman Publishers (design: Julia Born and Laurenz Brunner) and will be available throughout the exhibition period for the special price of EUR 20.

De jonge Georgische kunstenaar Andro Wekua (Sochumi, 1977) heeft zich de afgelopen jaren internationaal onderscheiden met raadselachtige, stemmige installaties die zijn samengesteld uit sculpturen, collages, films en schilderijen. Ze zijn doordrenkt van een duistere, romantische melancholie die voortkomt uit per-soonlijke herinneringen aan zijn jeugd in de Georgische badplaats Sochumi, maar daarin nergens expliciet wordt. Veelal gebruik-makend van materialen die met ambachtelijke productieproces-sen worden geassocieerd (was en keramiek), combineert de kun-
stenaar surrealistische mensfiguren, psychologisch geladen voor-werpen en expressionistische schilderijen en collages tot samen-hangende ruimtes met nadrukkelijk theatrale aspiraties.
Het werk heeft sterk poëtische kwaliteiten: de gebeeldhouwde mensfiguren zijn steevast breekbaar en elegant, en zijn schilderi-jen en collages ademen de herinnering aan vervlogen schoonheid. Tegelijkertijd zorgt de combinatie van realistische sculpturen, schemerende kleuren en een nerveuze, krassende schildertoets voor een enigszins unheimliche dreiging. Het centrale werk in de tentoonstelling is illustratief hiervoor: een levensechte racemotor, bij nadere beschouwing geheel vervaardigd uit zwart rubber, draagt een meisjesfiguur, bij wie de gelaatstrekken zijn vervangen door een masker dat aan het gezicht van de kunstenaar doet denken. Een andere component van de installatie die Wekua voor de Verweyhal heeft gerealiseerd is een film – het medium waarin de kunstenaar zijn verhalende aspiraties op een natuurlijke mani-er tot hun recht kan laten komen, en waarin de beelden uit zijn installaties terugkomen in droomachtige, soms David Lynch-achtige scènes.
De kunst van Andro Wekua behandelt actuele thema’s als cul-turele en politieke ontheemding. Het is echter nooit expliciet – Wekua kiest altijd voor een hypersubjectieve houding, waarin hij ‘impopulaire’ noties als het theatrale en het groteske met speels gemak en volstrekt overtuigend naar zijn hand zet.
In recent years, the young Georgian artist Andro Wekua (Sochumi, 1977) has enjoyed international acclaim with mysterious, sober installations that incorporate sculpture, collages, films and paint-ings. They are imbued with a dark, romantic melancholy, which is based on the artist’s personal recollections of his youth in the Georgian resort town of Sochumi but never makes these origins fully explicit. Often utilising materials associated with ‘craft’ pro-duction processes (wax and ceramics), Wekua combines surreal-ist human figures, psychologically charged objects and expres-sionist paintings and collages into interconnected spaces with emphatically theatrical aspirations.

The work has strong poetic qualities: the artist’s sculpted human figures are invariably fragile and elegant, and his paintings and collages exude a sense of faded glory. At the same time, the combination of realistic sculpture, twilight colours and nervous, scratchy brush strokes lend them a slightly uncanny aspect. The central work of the exhibition serves as a case in point: a life-like race motorbike, which on closer inspection is made com-pletely out of black rubber, bears the figure of a girl whose face has been replaced by a mask recalling the features of the artist. Another element of the installation realised by Wekua for the Verweyhal is a film – a medium that serves as a natural channel for the artist to express his narrative aspirations – in which the images from his installation reappear in dreamlike, almost David Lynch-like scenes.
The art of Andro Wekua deals with current themes like cultural and political alienation. However, it is never explicit – Wekua al-ways adopts a hyper-subjective stance, in which he manages with playful ease and in a completely convincing manner to manipulate ‘unpopular’ notions such as the theatrical and the grotesque.
De tentoonstelling van Andro Wekua wordt geproduceerd in samenwerking met het Camden Arts Centre in Londen, waar deze van 6 december 2008 tot en met 1 fe bruari 2009 te zien zal zijn. Het werk van de Amsterdamse fotograaf Leo Divendal (Heem stede, 1947) is tijdloos, poëtisch en romantisch Divendal’s debuuttentoonstelling in De Hallen Haarlem haakt in op de traditie om hedendaagse fotografie te tonen, maar verwijdert zich in thema’s en onderwerpkeuze een stap van het begrip ‘concerned photography’ dat sinds 2001 de leidraad was voor deze programmering. De tentoonstelling heeft de vorm van een tweeluik.
Het eerste deel is getiteld Sea of Marmara en bestaat uit een reeks grote foto’s van zeeschepen voor de haven van Istanboel. Divendal heeft extreme uitsnedes gemaakt en deze enorm ‘opgeblazen’. In deze uiterst precieze composities ontstaan ‘scheepsschimmen’, beelden die archetypisch zijn voor het verschijnsel ‘schip’. Op de foto’s doemen schepen op uit het niets of staan op het punt weer te vervagen. Ze geven het romantisch verlangen weer naar ergens aankomen of ergens heengaan, het verlangen naar de schepen waar je juist niét op zit.
Het tweede deel heet Vézelay, of de architectuur van de winter. Gedurende meerdere lange winterverblijven in het Franse vestingstadje Vézelay maakte Divendal stemmige en verstilde foto’s van stukken van de stad. Op de foto’s komen geen mensen voor en evenmin verwijzingen naar het nu. De winterse kaalheid en leegte domineren in zwartwit. In Vézelay schreef Divendal de liefdesroman Een winters hart en een reeks gedichten. Zowel de gedichten als de foto’s komen terug in deze roman. De gedichten zijn bovendien op muziek gezet door componist Cees Thissen en vormen de liederencyclus Suite Vézelienne.
De liederencyclus wordt ter gelegenheid van dit project op 13 september om 14.30 uur uitgevoerd in de Schutterszaal in het Frans Hals Museum.
Het boek Suite Vézelienne met foto’s en gedichten is tijdens de tentoonstelling te koop voor EUR 25, Een CD met het muziekstuk Suite Vézelienne is te koop voor EUR 15. De novelle Een winters hart kost EUR 25. Verder publiceert Divendal in eigen beheer ter gelegenheid van de expositie een nieuw fotoboek (geen catalogus) Haze of Dawn dat te koop is voor EUR 19,50.

crops of these images and ‘blown them up’ tremendously. Within these exceptionally precise compositions, one can make out ‘phantom vessels’ – archetypal images of the phenomenon of the ‘ship’. In the pictures, the ships rise up out of the blue or are on the verge of disappearing in the background. They convey the romantic yearning to either arrive at or depart for some new destination: the longing for precisely those ships that one has not boarded oneself.
The second part of the show is called Vézelay, or the architecture of winter. During a number of winter stays in the French fortified town of Vézelay, Divendal captured parts of the small town in atmospheric and tranquil photographs. One can make out neither people nor references to the present in these pictures. The blackandwhite images are dominated by wintry barrenness and emptiness.During his time in Vézelay, Divendal wrote the romance Een winters hart (‘A Wintry Heart’) as well as a cycle of poems. Both the poems and the photographs are referenced in this novella. Furthermore, the poems have been set to music by the composer Cees Thissen, forming the song cycle Suite Vézelienne.
The song cycle will be performed on the occasion of this project, on 13 September, 2:30 p.m. in the Schutterszaal of the Frans Hals Museum.
The publication Suite Vézelienne, containing photographs and poems, is available for EUR 25 throughout the exhibition period. A CD with a performance of the piece Suite Vézelienne is available for EUR 15. The novella Een winters hart will cost EUR 25. In addition, Divendal will be privately publishing a new photo book (not a catalogue) entitled Haze of Dawn, on the occasion of the present exhibition. This publication will cost EUR 19.50.
The work of the Amsterdam photographer Leo Divendal (Heemstede, 1947) is timeless, poetic and romantic. While Divendal’s first exhibition in De Hallen Haarlem is in line with the institute’s tradition of contemporary photography presentations, in terms of themes and subject matter it distances itself somewhat from the concept of ‘concerned photography’ that has served as a guiding principle for this programming since 2001. The exhibition takes the form of a diptych.
The first part of the exhibition is titled Sea of Marmara and consists of a series of largescale photographs of seagoing vessels before the harbour of Istanbul. Divendal has made extreme
