WHY Psychology?PSYCHOLOGY Touches Every Aspect of Our Life

Acquiring the knowledge of how people think and what drives us to do what we do can help us to counsel those in pain, and/or guide those dealing with mental ill health issues and addiction problems. This is very beneficial for those who are already in or are interested in fulfilling careers in the social service sector.

Taking up psychology will equip you with strong communication skills and a more in depth understanding of human behaviour, which are invaluable skills for sales and marketing representatives.

Psychology graduates are also highly sought after in the Human Resources & Recruitment sector. With a good grasp of people, their motivations and why they act as they do, they make sure that people are happy at work and performing to the best of their abilities. Businesses also use their expertise to increase productivity, test products and to identify employees who are the best fit for particular jobs and tasks within an organization.

Having a psychology degree will also help you excel in the public sector, particularly in education. Possessing good analytical, data collection and problem-solving skills, psychology graduates can be tasked to assess students’ abilities as well as the development of the educational curriculum. They form effective relationships with both parents and teachers, ensuring that school pupils are being taught and well taken care of in schools.

The benefits of having a psychology degree is inexhaustible.

Dr Jane Montage (PhD, Psychology) Deputy Head of Department Life Sciences and Head of Psychology, University of Derby.

CUTTING EDGE CURRICULUMPsychology Research Project This module represents the culmination of students’ training in psychological research methods, and allows students to put into practice research skills acquired at Levels 4 and 5. Under academic supervision, students identify a research issue in an area of psychology of their choosing, formulate meaningful research questions and/or hypotheses, select appropriate methods, collect and analyse empirical data, and write up the study in a scientific report. In addition, students prepare for graduate employment and/or postgraduate training by reflecting on and articulating the personal and transferable skills they have developed across their studies.

Addictive BehavioursThe module critically examines contemporary psychologi-cal approaches to the understanding of substance use and addiction. Students will consider the relative contributions of psychological theories from the fields of biological, be-havioural, social and cognitive psychology to understand-ing, treatment and prevention of addictions, including those not involving consumption of substances.

Educational PsychologyThe module is about how psychology applies to education. This means the application of psychological theory, research and methods to educational processes and settings. The module therefore has a strongly applied emphasis. It will look at a range of educational settings, from primary to higher education. It is designed with students in mind who may progress to postgraduate training to qualify as teachers or educational psychologists, or who may work in educational settings (eg as teaching assistants). It is also designed to be attractive to joint honours students combining psychology and education, as well as those with a strong interest in education and applied psychology

Family Health PsychologyThis module aims to develop students’ critical understanding of psychological concepts, theories, and methods relevant to the study of Family Health Psychology. The module will provide students with an understanding of the range of research conducted in this area, and with the skills necessary to evaluate existing research regarding the prevention of ill health and management of illness within the context of the family. This module will cover 3 broad topic areas and will include; (I) Families and Prevention, (II) Families and illness & (III) Families and intervention. More specifically, students will take a lifespan perspective and cover content such as health cognitions in families, understanding family factors that shape the impact of chronic illness, and integrating theory and practice in psychological intervention with families.

Clinical Applications of PsychologyThe module builds on and develops knowledge gained through the study of core psychology at levels 4 and 5 and its application in an applied context. This module is designed to develop students’ understanding of the application of psychological theory and research in practise. The module will focus on the three professional areas of psychology (clinical, health and counselling) that are concerned with the psychological health and well-being of individuals. Students will be introduced to the generic skills required of psychologists working in these areas before exploring the application of psychological theory and research to understanding the psychological components of a range of clinically relevant topics. The use of psychologically-based assessments, interventions and therapies appropriate to specific populations and clinical issues will also be examined.
